1H-NMR characterization of soil dissolved organic matter from soil samples in control and warming plots in Blodgett Forest, CA (2014 and 2018)

The pathways of carbon transport and loss through and from soils—soil organic matter (SOM) depolymerization to dissolved organic carbon and mineralization to carbon dioxide (CO2)—are fundamentally driven by microbial activity, which is strongly regulated by environmental conditions. As part of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Terrestrial Ecosystem Science Belowground Biogeochemistry Science Focus Area (SFA), we have established a novel whole-soil long-term warming experiment at the University of California (UC) Blodgett Forest Research Station (Sierra Nevada) in 2014, where we study the role of biogeochemical, microbial and geochemical process interactions in SOM (soil organic matter) decomposition and stabilization. This package contains metabolite data obtained through 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy on water-extracted soils. Soil samples were collected in 2014/06/03 and 2018/06/04 from 3 replicated paired plots that had been subjected to experimental warming since June 2014 to simulate a predicted climate change scenario for northern California. Linearity for Ca 2+ -Doped CeBr 3 Scintillating Materials [Slides]

This project seeks to develop low-cost, high-resolution gamma scintillators based on new fracture-resistant alloys of cerium bromide. These alloys will eliminate limitations imposed by self-activity and fracture of currently available lanthanum-based scintillators.

CA Special Studies: Updates to the Groundwater Pathway Radiological Dose

This environmental calculation file (ECF) summarizes the groundwater pathway exposure assumptions and methodologies used to revise radionuclide specific unit dose factors (UDFs) published in CP-64491, Hanford Site Composite Analysis Data Package – Exposure Scenarios and Radionuclide Specific Dose Conversion Factors. Specifically, this ECF describes the updated exposure-related parameters used to calculate radionuclide specific UDFs based on recommendations from the Low-Level Waste Disposal Facility Federal Review Group (LFRG) and updates to Adult External DCFs included in EPA 402-R-93-081, External Exposure to Radionuclides in Air, Water, and Soil hereinafter called Federal Guidance Report [FGR]).

Evaluating the 3D PBL scheme for wind energy applications in the complex terrain of Altamont Pass, CA

In this study, the 3D PBL scheme, developed and tested during previous WETO projects, was used to simulate daily speedup flows in the Altamont Pass Wind Resource Area of California. These flows were observed as part of the WFIP2 companion experiment HilFlowS, which examined potential power output from taller turbines in the Altamont region. The regularity of the observed speedup events during the summer months, combined with the importance of terrain-induced wind acceleration, makes them a useful case study for evaluating mesoscale forecast models, which often underperform in regions of complex terrain. Compared to a traditional one-dimensional PBL scheme, the 3D PBL scheme shows evidence of improved wind speed predictions, including an ability to capture atypical wind speed profiles and reduce model overestimates of wind speed across the turbine rotor region. Such improvements will be necessary for wind farm siting and power forecasting, especially as taller turbines are deployed in complex terrain.

Equitable Electrification Analysis for Existing Buildings in Richmond, CA

Over a 12-month period beginning in July 2022, NREL coordinated with a coalition of staff from the City of Richmond and local community organizations to develop and conduct a city-wide building energy use analysis and develop and assess the impacts of various approaches to electrifying and improving energy efficiency of all existing residential and commercial buildings within the city limits. Building on data available through NREL's ResStock™ and ComStock™ analysis tools, the authors looked at potential modeled impacts of building envelope and electrification upgrades on five indicators identified by the community coalition: building energy consumption, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, utility bill charges and cost-effectiveness, employment impacts, and health and safety impacts. This report summarizes the findings of that research and analysis.

Equitable Electrification Analysis for Existing Buildings in Richmond, CA [Slides]

Since June 2022, NREL has provided technical assistance in the form of research and analysis in order to support the City of Richmond in identifying strategies to equitably transition its existing buildings from reliance on natural gas to clean electricity. Building on data from the ResStock and ComStock tools, the analysis looked at the potential impacts of building envelope and electrification improvements on energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, residential utility bills, jobs and employment, and indoor air quality. This presentation summarizes the findings from that research and analysis.

Responses to International Accrediting Services (IAS) Biennial Onsite Assessment of ALAB to CA ELAP Requirements

The purpose of this assessment was to perform an evaluation of the laboratory’s quality system, capabilities, and personnel qualifications to determine the extent of conformance to the current TNI standards and the rules enacted by the 2020 California Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP) for accreditation of environmental laboratories. The scope of the assessment included the California Code, Health and Safety Code – HSC § 100829 and 100830, the 2016 TNI-2 requirements, published methods, and the laboratory’s Quality Management System including administrative and technical operating procedures.

Status Quo in V2G/V2H: Closer Look at CA's Progress

This presentation will guide participants through the progress of V2G interconnection, using California's regulatory development as a case study. The focus will be on utility-side considerations rather than EVs themselves, and as such, EV-EVSE interactions will not be covered. Since V2G DC is already accommodated within the existing grid interconnection process, the majority of the discussion will center on V2G AC, particularly the regulatory and standards development.
