Absolute Transition Probabilities of Lines in the Spectra of Astrophysical Atoms, Molecules, and Ions

Progress in the investigation of absolute transition probabilities (A-values or F values) for ultraviolet lines is reported. A radio frequency ion trap was used for measurement of transition probabilities for intersystem lines seen in astronomical spectra. The intersystem line at 2670 A in Al II, which is seen in pre-main sequence stars and symbiotic stars, was studied.

X-ray astronomy and plasma astrophysics

X-ray astronomy studies of thin, thermal plasmas in stellar coronas, supernova remnants, and clusters of galaxies are reviewed. Plasma diagnostics for density, temperature and elemental abundance, as well as for departures from ionization equilibrium are described. These were used in analyses of data from imaging and spectroscopic intruments on the Einstein satellite. Results of these diagnostics were used to study the nature of coronal loops in RS CVn stars; the masses and abundances in Type I and Type II supernova remnants with implications for stellar evolution and the enrichment of the interstellar medium; the structure of the interstellar medium; the quantity and distribution of dark matter in galaxy halos; and the existence of cooling accretion flow in clusters.

Astrophysical applications of high angular resolution array-telescopes

The air shower array-telescopes which are currently being used to search for and study point sources of UHE gamma-rays have angular resolution similar to 1 deg, limited by either the small total area of particle detectors or poor timing resolution. As the signal to noise ratio depends sensitively on the angular resolution, it seems certain that this figure will quickly be surpassed when second generation instruments come into operation. Since the trajectories of galactic cosmic rays with E 100,000 GeV are practically straight lines on scales of 1 A.U. or less, these new instruments will be able to observe a shadow cast by the Moon (angular diameter 0.5 deg). Although the angular diameter of the Sun is practically the same, its shadow will be more complex because of its magnetic field. Thus, high angular resolution observations of the Sun afford a means of investigating the solar magnetic field, and also the charge composition of cosmic rays, including the ratio of antiprotons to protons.

Preliminary results of the Cerenkov EAS flashes the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory

The facility designed for the study of angular resolution of light in the extensive air showers EAS flashes is described. The threshold energy of the facility is about 3 x 10 to the 12h power eV. The data on the angular distribution of light in a flash and the ratio of the flux in the UV and visual region as a function of the distance to the axis of a shower are given. Obtained results are compared to the published computations.

Density fluctuations in the interstellar medium: Evidence for anisotropic magnetogasdynamic turbulence. I - Model and astrophysical sites

A self-consistent theoretical model of turbulent fluctuations in a compressible electrically conducting gas is developed in order to quantitatively study a turbulent fluid origin for the small spiral scale density fluctuations observed by Armstrong et al. (1981). A heuristic description of turbulent flows in compressible fluids is offered as an analogy for the small-scale turbulent velocity and magnetic field variations which derive density variations in the presence of a strong local magnetic field.

The effects of epoxy shrinkage on the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility Technology Mirror Assembly

A method is shown analytically which reduces the effects of epoxy shrinkage for an ultra-high precision X-ray telescope to within the system error budget. The three-dimensional shrinkage effects are discussed with reference to this telescope. The results of the analysis point to the use of an interrupted rather than continuous bond line as the best solution. Discussion of the finite element modelling techniques is included.

Saturation and beaming in astrophysical masers

A 'four-stream' model system of equations that are closely analogous to the equations of radiative transfer in a maser spectral line and are amenable to numerical solution are constructed. This model is used to investigate radiative transfer in asymmetric maser clouds. Competition between different beams of radiation for available pump photons is important in both unsaturated and saturated masers. Consequently, the radiation from a typical cloud will be highly beamed, even if the maser is saturated, because the shape of a typical cloud is not symmetric. In addition, it is shown that analysis of maser emission lines formed in expanding envelopes does not reveal the degree of saturation of the maser.

Criteria for grasar action in astrophysical sources

The theory of gamma ray amplification through stimulated annihilation radiation (grasar) was developed by Ramaty, McKinley and Jones. For gamma ray bursts similar to the March 5, 1979 burst, an observed annihilation line of width 0.03 MeV would imply a grasar source. The minimum pair density needed for the onset of grasar action is approx. 10 to the 30th power/cu cm and the peak of the grasar line, without a gravitational redshift, is at 0.5 MeV.

Improved cross section calculations for astrophysical applications

Modifications are proposed for the semiempirical equations and parameters of Silberberg and Tsao (1973) for partial cross section calculations of proton-nucleus reactions in cosmic rays. These modifications include: adjustment of general parameters; modification of energy dependence; effects of nuclear alpha-particle structure, deuteron emission, and even-charged products; peripheral reactions; fission reactions; averaging cross sections near boundaries of different parameters; elimination of certain special cases; and treatment of the Pt to Pb group that cannot yet be generalized to Z(t) less than 76.

Unstable current systems and plasma instabilities in astrophysics; Proceedings of the 107th Symposium, University of Maryland, College Park, August 8-11, 1983

Among the topics discussed are: magnetic field reconnection in cosmic plasmas; energy dissipation mechanisms in the solar corona; and the acceleration of runaway electrons and Joule heating in solar flares. Consideration is also given to: the nonlinear evolution of the resistive tearing mode; anomalous transport in current sheets; equilibrium and instability in extragalactic jets; and magnetic field reconnection in differentially rotating accretion disks. Among additional topics discussed are: the creation of high energy electron tails by lower hybrid waves and its connection with type-II and type-III bursts; beam current systems in solar flares; and the spatio-temporal features of microwave emissions of active regions and flares.

Patchy reconnection and magnetic ropes in astrophysical plasmas

The formation of flux ropes in the magnetosphere of Venus due to velocity shear is examined in order to infer the properties of flux ropes in the earth magnetosphere. Observational data obtained by the International Sun-Earth Explorer (ISEE) spacecraft for the geometry of directed flows in the earth magnetosheath are compared with magnetometer measurements carried out on board Pioneer Venus Orbiter, and the results are discussed in detail. It is shown that the velocity shear is the dominant element shaping the magnetic structure of the magnetosheaths.

Magnetic flux ropes of Venus - A paradigm for helical magnetic structures in astrophysical systems

Theoretical model of the helical structures in the magnetic flux ropes of Venus are presented. The models are based on observations carried out by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter. The densities of the magnetic currents flowing parallel and perpendicular to the Venusian magnetic field are obtained and a 'helical kink' criterion is developed to evaluate the stability of the ropes with respect to pinch-related perturbations. The arbitrary transversal of a helical flux rope by a kink instability is shown in a drawing.

Calculations on the production and use of superfine holographic X-ray gratings for astrophysical observations

Superfine holograhic X-ray gratings may be produced by transferring onto metal an interference pattern generated by two branches of a sufficiently coherent X-ray beam, emitted in the form of synchrotron radiation from high energy electron storage rings. Generation of the coherent beam requires restrictions on the beam size. A calculation is presented which allows an exact evaluation of this restriction. The effect of defocusing optics on the expected resolution is also studied.

Astrophysical materials science: Theory

A method of structural expansions for use in determining the equation of state of metallic hydrogen (and indeed other metals) up to the 4th order in the perturbation theory was developed. The electrical and thermal transport properties of the planetary interior of Jupiter were calculated. The nature of the interaction between molecules at short range and the importance of multicenter terms in arriving at an adequate description of the thermodynamic functions of condensed molecular hydrogen were also investigated.

Rocket and laboratory studies in aeronomy and astrophysics

Progress from March 1, 1986 to August 31, 1986 is covered and includes the work performed in response to a proposal entitled A Spartan Payload for Spatially Resolved Spectroscopy of Extended Faint Sources in the Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV). During this period, one rocket was launched, the reflight of the payload to observe Halley's comet on March 13, 1986. Most of the effort during this period was concentrated on detailed mechanical and electronic design of a Spartan payload and on the reduction and analysis of the data from the two Halley rocket flights and from the UVX experiment which flew on STS-61C in January 1986.
