A New Modal Analysis Method to put Constraints on the Aqueous Alteration of CR Chondrites and Estimate the Unaltered CR Composition

carbonaceous chondrites are of the major interest since they contain one of the most primitive organic matters. However, aqueous alteration has more or less overprinted their original features in a way that needed to be assessed. That was done in the present study by comparing the mineralogy of the most altered CR1 chondrite, GRO 95577, to a less altered CR2, Renazzo. Their modal analyses were achieved thanks to a new method, based on X-ray elemental maps acquired on electron microprobe, and on IDL image treatment. It allowed the collection of new data on the composition of Renazzo and confirmed the classification of GRO 95577 as a CR1. New alteration products for CRs, vermiculite and clinochlore, were observed. The homogeneity of the Fe-poor clays in the CR1 and the distinctive matrix composition in the two chondrites suggest a wide-range of aqueous alteration on CRs. The preservation of the outlines of the chondrules in GRO 95577 and the elemental transfers of Al, Fe and Ca throughout the chondrule and of Fe and S from the matrix to the chondrule favor the idea of an asteroidal location of the aqueous alteration. From their mineralogical descriptions and modal abundances, the element repartitions in Renazzo and GRO 95577 were computed. It indicates a possible relationship between these two chondrites via an isochemical alteration process. Knowing the chemical reactions that occurred during the alteration, it was thus possible to decipher the mineralogical modal abundances in the unaltered CR body.

Compact Fuel-Cell System Would Consume Neat Methanol

In a proposed direct methanol fuel-cell electric-power-generating system, the fuel cells would consume neat methanol, in contradistinction to the dilute aqueous methanol solutions consumed in prior direct methanol fuel-cell systems. The design concept of the proposed fuel-cell system takes advantage of (1) electro-osmotic drag and diffusion processes to manage the flows of hydrogen and water between the anode and the cathode and (2) evaporative cooling for regulating temperature. The design concept provides for supplying enough water to the anodes to enable the use of neat methanol while ensuring conservation of water for the whole fuel-cell system.

Allophane on Mars: Evidence from IR Spectroscopy and TES Spectral Models

Allophane is an alteration product of volcanic glass and a clay mineral precursor that is commonly found in basaltic soils on Earth. It is a poorly-crystalline or amorphous, hydrous aluminosilicate with Si/Al ratios ranging from approx.0.5-1 [Wada, 1989]. Analyses of thermal infrared (TIR) spectra of the Martian surface from TES show high-silica phases at mid-to-high latitudes that have been proposed to be primary volcanic glass [Bandfield et al., 2000; Bandfield, 2002; Rogers and Christensen, 2007] or poorly-crystalline secondary silicates such as allophane or aluminous amorphous silica [Kraft et al., 2003; Michalski et al., 2006; Rogers and Christensen, 2007; Kraft, 2009]. Phase modeling of chemical data from the APXS on the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit suggest the presence of allophane in chemically weathered rocks [Ming et al., 2006]. The presence of allophane on Mars has not been previously tested with IR spectroscopy because allophane spectra have not been available. We synthesized allophanes and allophanic gels with a range of Si/Al ratios to measure TIR emission and VNIR reflectance spectra and to test for the presence of allophane in Martian soils. VNIR reflectance spectra of the synthetic allophane samples have broad absorptions near 1.4 m from OH stretching overtones and 1.9 m from a combination of stretching and bending vibrations in H2O. Samples have a broad absorption centered near 2.25 microns, from AlAlOH combination bending and stretching vibrations, that shifts position with Si/Al ratio. Amorphous silica (opaline silica or primary volcanic glass) has been identified in CRISM spectra of southern highland terrains based on the presence of 1.4, 1.9, and broad 2.25 m absorptions [Mustard et al., 2008]; however, these absorptions are also consistent with the presence of allophane. TIR emission spectra of the synthetic allophanes show two spectrally distinct types: Si-rich and Al-rich. Si-rich allophanes have two broad absorptions centered near 1080 and 430 cm-1 from Si(Al)-O stretching and Si(Al)-O bending vibrations, respectively, and Al-rich allophanes have three broad absorptions centered near 950, 540, and 430 cm-1. We used a spectral library commonly used to deconvolve TES spectra and four allophane spectra to model nine spectrally distinct regions on Mars [from Rogers et al., 2007]. Regions previously modeled with high-silica phases contain significant amounts of allophane (>10 vol.%) in our models. Our models of northern Acidalia, the type locality for surface type 2 materials, contain 40 vol.% Si-rich allophane. The presence of allophane in multiple surface regions of Mars indicates a more widespread occurrence of low-temperature aqueous alteration at moderate pH than has been previously recognized. The regional variations in modeled abundances and the types of allophane (Si- vs. Al-rich) suggest regional differences in Mars weathering processes.

Photopolymerizable Sol-gel Synthesis for Faster Manufacturing of Surrogate Nuclear Debris

Simulated debris is used to train first responders for potential nuclear detonations. Sol gel chemistry has been used to produce surrogate material for these training exercises, but the current average production time is 4 hours. Optimization using UV-polymerizable sol gel precursors can potentially decrease time as well as cost of the production process. FT-IR spectroscopy was used to measure and compare gelation kinetics of the standard and photopolymerizable sol gel synthetic procedures. Addition of the UV-polymerizable precursors and controlling the aqueous phase volume resulted in a 120-fold decrease in vitrification time.

Single rhenium atoms on nanomagnetite: Probing the recharge process that controls the fate of rhenium in the environment

Understanding the redox transitions that control rhenium geochemistry is central to paleoredox and geochronology studies, as well as predicting the fate of chemically similar hazardous oxyanions in the environment such as pertechnetate. However, detailed mechanistic information regarding rhenium redox transitions in anoxic systems is scarce. Here, we performed a comprehensive laboratory study of rhenium redox transitions on variably oxidized magnetite nanoparticle surfaces. Through high-end spectroscopic and microscopic tools, we propose an abiotic transition pathway in which aqueous iron(II) ions in the presence of pure or preoxidized magnetite serve as an electron source to reduce rhenium(VII) to individual rhenium(IV) atoms or small polynuclear species on nanoparticle surfaces. Notably, iron(II) ions recharged preoxidized magnetite nanoparticles exhibit a maghemite core and a magnetite shell, challenging the traditional core-shell magnetite-maghemite model. This study provides a fundamental understanding of redox processes governing rhenium fate and transport in the environment and enables an improved basis for predicting its speciation in geochemical systems.

Sulfur isotope fractionation between aqueous and carbonate-associated sulfate in abiotic calcite and aragonite

Sulfate (SO 4 2– ) incorporated into calcium carbonate minerals enables measurements of sulfur (S) isotope ratios in carbonate rocks. This Carbonate Associated Sulfate (CAS) in marine carbonate minerals is thought to faithfully represent the S isotope composition of the seawater sulfate incorporated into the mineral, with little or no S isotope fractionation in the process. However, comparison between different calcifying species reveals both positive and negative S isotope fractionation between CAS and seawater sulfate, and a large range of S isotope ratios can be found within a single rock sample, depending on the component measured. To better understand the isotopic effects associated with sulfate incorporation into carbonate minerals, we precipitated inorganic calcite and aragonite over a range covering more than two orders of magnitude of sulfate concentration and precipitation rate. Coupled measurements of CAS concentration, S isotope composition and X-ray absorption near-edge spectra (XANES) permit characterization and explanation of the observed dependence of S isotope fractionation between CAS and aqueous sulfate (CAS-SO 4 2– isotope fractionation) on sulfate concentration and precipitation rate. In aragonite, the CAS-SO 4 2– isotope fractionation is 1.0 ± 0.3‰ and independent of the sulfate (and CAS) concentration. In contrast, we note the CAS-SO 4 2– isotope fractionation in calcite covaries strongly with the sulfate concentration and weakly with the precipitation rate, between values of 1.3 ± 0.1 and 3.1 ± 0.6‰. We suggest that the correlation between aqueous sulfate concentration and CAS-SO 4 2– isotope fractionation in calcite reflects a dependence of the equilibrium S isotope fractionation on the concentration of CAS, through the effect of the sulfate impurity on the carbonate mineral’s energetic state.

Ammonium-Coordinated Exchanger (ACE) Sorbents for Aqueous Oxyanion Metal Recovery/Removal

Ammonium coordinated exchanger (ACE) sorbents recovery/remove anionic contaminant/critical metals from water. Heavy reliance of the U.S. on foreign critical mineral (CM) supplies presents national security and economics risks. This prompted government action. Domestically recovering CM from unconventional water sources, largely through adsorption processes, could alleviate this problem. Acid mine drainage and mineral leachates are viable sources

Chemical and physical studies of type 3 chondrites. IX - Thermoluminescence and hydrothermal annealing experiments and their relationship to metamorphism and aqueous alteration in type below 3.3 ordinary chondrites

Thermoluminescence (TL) properties were measured in samples of four type-3.0 chondrites annealed at 400-850 C and 0.77-1 kbar in the presence of various amounts of water and sodium disilicate. Several changes recorded in TL characteristics, such as the lowering of TL sensitivity in certain samples, its increase in other samples, and changes in the peak position and peak width of TL suggested the occurrence of metamorphic processes in these samples. It is suggested that, for the chondrite types above 3.2, the observed changes in TL are consistent with the TL-metamorphism trends, being due to the formation of feldspar by the devitrification of chondrule glass during metamorphism. For types below 3.2, the TL data are consistent with the hypothesis that these chondrules experienced lower levels of metamorphism than the higher types or, alternatively, with the hypothesis that the type 3.0 chondrules are being produced from higher types by aqueous alteration.

The Halite-Bearing Zag and Monahans (1998) Meteorite Breccias: Shock Metamorphism, Thermal Metamorphism and Aqueous Alteration on the H-Chondrite Parent Body

Zag and Monahans (1998) are H-chondrite regolith breccias comprised mainly of lightcolored metamorphosed clasts, dark clasts that exhibit extensive silicate darkening, and a halite-bearing clastic matrix. These meteorites reflect a complex set of modification processes that occurred on the H-chondrite parent body. The light-colored clasts are thermally metamorphosed H5 and H6 rocks that were fragmented and deposited in the regolith. The dark clasts formed from light-colored clasts during shock events that melted and mobilized a significant fraction of their metallic Fe-Ni and troilite grains. The clastic matrices of these meteorites are rich in solar-wind gases. Parent-body water was required to cause leaching of chondri tic minerals and chondrule glass; the fluids became enriched in Na, K, CI, Br, AI, Ca, Mg and Fe. Evaporation of the fluids caused them to become brines as halides and alkalies became supersaturated; grains of halite (and, in the case of Monahans (1998), halite with sylvite inclusions) precipitated at low temperatures (less than or equal to 100 C) in the porous regolith. In both meteorites fluid inclusions were trapped inside the halite crystals. Primary fluid inclusions were trapped in the growing crystals; secondary inclusions formed subsequently from fluid trapped within healed fractures.

Hydrophobic Nanoconfinement Enhances CO 2 Conversion to H 2 CO 3

Understanding the formation of H 2 CO 3 in water from CO 2 is important in environmental and industrial processes. Although numerous investigations have studied this reaction, the conversion of CO 2 to H 2 CO 3 in nanopores, and how it differs from that in bulk water, has not been understood. We use ReaxFF metadynamics molecular simulations to demonstrate striking differences in the free energy of CO 2 conversion to H 2 CO 3 in bulk and nanoconfined aqueous environments. We find that nanoconfinement not only reduces the energy barrier but also reverses the reaction from endothermic in bulk water to exothermic in nanoconfined water. Also, charged intermediates are observed more often under nanoconfinement than in bulk water. Stronger solvation and more favorable proton transfer with increasing nanoconfinement enhance the thermodynamics and kinetics of the reaction. Here our results provide a detailed mechanistic understanding of an important step in the carbonation process, which depends intricately on confinement, surface chemistry, and CO 2 concentration.

Corn stover‐derived porous carbon for asymmetric supercapacitors

In this investigation, hydrothermal liquefaction‐derived hydrochar from pulverized corn stover (avg. particle size 1.12 mm and ash content 6.75 wt%) is chemically activated with aqueous KOH in the presence of Pluronic F127 surfactant and thermally treated further up to 800°C to generate porous carbon (POC) with higher specific surface area and porosity. POC obtained under different processing conditions is thoroughly characterized by Brunauer‐Emmett‐Teller surface area analyzer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Metallic impurity present in POC is characterized by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Higher specific surface area POC is observed with the use of the surfactant during the activation process. Fully characterized POC is used with (Mn, Ti)‐mixed oxide electrode to fabricate asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC). Specific capacitance of ASC is measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique using Gamry G‐300 potentiostat/galvanostat/ZRA. CV plots are obtained with different voltage scan rates whereas galvanostatic charge‐discharge plots are studied by varying the current density. Renewable corn stover‐derived POC prepared using Pluronic F127/KOH activation method is found to be highly suitable as an electrode material because of higher capacitance and electrochemical stability over 100 charging‐discharging cycles.

Modeling dissociation of ionic liquids with electrolyte NRTL model

Dissociation of ionic liquids (ILs) is critical to electrochemical process performance by affecting ionic conductivity. Prior studies of thermodynamic modeling either assumed no dissociation or complete dissociation that were not consistent with experimental observations. This work presented an eNRTL model for three aqueous imidazolium-based IL systems: [Emim][EtSO 4 ], [Emim][TFA], and [Emim][TfO]. The model accurately correlates the IL dissociation and VLE data in the entire concentration range from pure IL to infinite dilution aqueous solution. The system non-ideality is dominated by the dissociation chemistry. Dissociation behavior is driven by strong short-range interaction of the molecular IL-water pair relative to the dissociated IL-water pair, consistent with prior studies indicating that molecular IL and water can form an energetically favorable complex. The interaction energy parameters calculated in this work qualitatively agrees with the hydrogen bonding ability of the anions previously reported. This research not only provides a model that well describes the IL dissociation but also demonstrates the physical significance of eNRTL model.

Aqueous-based recycling of perovskite photovoltaics

Abstract Cumulative silicon photovoltaic (PV) waste highlights the importance of considering waste recycling before the commercialization of emerging PV technologies 1,2 . Perovskite PVs are a promising next-generation technology 3 , in which recycling their end-of-life waste can reduce the toxic waste and retain resources 4,5 . Here we report a low-cost, green-solvent-based holistic recycling strategy to restore all valuable components from perovskite PV waste. We develop an efficient aqueous-based perovskite recycling approach that can also rejuvenate degraded perovskites. We further extend the scope of recycling to charge-transport layers, substrates, cover glasses and metal electrodes. After repeated degradation–recycling processes, the recycled devices show similar efficiency and stability compared with the fresh devices. Our holistic recycling strategy reduces by 96.6% resource depletion and by 68.8% human toxicity (cancer effects) impacts associated with perovskite PVs compared with the landfill treatment. With recycling, the levelized cost of electricity also decreases for both utility-scale and residential systems. This study highlights unique opportunities of perovskite PVs for holistic recycling and paves the way for a sustainable perovskite solar economy.

Choline chloride-formic acid mixture as a medium for the reduction of pertechnetates – electrochemical and spectroscopic studies

In this work, physicochemical properties of the choline chloride (ChCl) and formic acid (FA) mixture (1:2 molar ratio) have been studied over a broad range of temperatures (-140°C – 60 °C). Differential scanning calorimetry has shown that the examined system remains in liquid state at very low temperatures - a glass transition is observed in the range of -125 °C to - 90 °C. The kinematic viscosity, ionic conductivity and the width of the electrochemical window determined for this system revealed its beneficial electrochemical properties. This indicates suitability of ChCl:FA electrolytes in electrochemical measurements. In this non-aqueous electrolyte, the electrochemical reduction of Tc(VII) ions has been studied for the first time. Cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry experiments revealed that the electroreduction of the pertechnetates is a multi-path process which leads to formation of a Tc(IV) ionic form. X-ray absorption spectroscopy of the latter revealed its structure as a TcCl 6 2- complex.

Reactive capture and electrochemical conversion of CO 2 with ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents

Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have tremendous potential for reactive capture and conversion (RCC) of CO 2 due to their wide electrochemical stability window, low volatility, and high CO 2 solubility. There is environmental and economic interest in the direct utilization of the captured CO 2 using electrified and modular processes that forgo the thermal- or pressure-swing regeneration steps to concentrate CO 2 , eliminating the need to compress, transport, or store the gas. The conventional electrochemical conversion of CO 2 with aqueous electrolytes presents limited CO 2 solubility and high energy requirement to achieve industrially relevant products. Additionally, aqueous systems have competitive hydrogen evolution. In the past decade, there has been significant progress toward the design of ILs and DESs, and their composites to separate CO 2 from dilute streams. In parallel, but not necessarily in synergy, there have been studies focused on a few select ILs and DESs for electrochemical reduction of CO 2 , often diluting them with aqueous or non-aqueous solvents. The resulting electrode–electrolyte interfaces present a complex speciation for RCC. In this review, we describe how the ILs and DESs are tuned for RCC and specifically address the CO 2 chemisorption and electroreduction mechanisms. Critical bulk and interfacial properties of ILs and DESs are discussed in the context of RCC, and the potential of these electrolytes are presented through a techno-economic evaluation.

Carbon Capture Pilot at Vicksburg Containerboard Mill (Final Technical Report)

This is the final technical report for the DOE-OCED project DE-CD0000051. The report provides the progress at the close of the project. The objective of the project is to design and build a large pilot plant for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) capture from a pulp and paper (P&P) mill using RTI’s non-aqueous solvent (NAS) technology at a capacity of 120,000 t-CO 2 /year, with >90% CO 2 captured. The pilot plant will be used for testing and evaluating the NAS capture process using real flue gas from the P&P mill’s power boiler for a minimum of 1 year of parametric testing and a minimum of 2,000 hours of continuous long-term testing. The testing will provide data for process optimization and scale-up for the P&P industry, provide information on interaction of flue gas contaminants on solvent performance and degradation, and inform strategies for emission control. At the end of the project, the pilot plant will be managed by International Paper (IP), the host site owner, which will continue to capture CO 2 , sequester the captured CO 2 , and be eligible for the 45Q credit.

New formaldehyde base disinfectants.

Preparations of formaldehyde in various organic liquids - ethylene glycol, glycerol, and propylene glycol - serve as effective disinfectants towards microbial vegetative cells and spores. This disinfection is a temperature-dependent process and is manifest when these formaldehyde base disinfectants are dissolved in water. The irritating vapors associated with formaldehyde disinfection are not present in either of these new formaldehyde base disinfectants or in aqueous solutions of them.
