Creep and tensile properties of several oxide dispersion strengthened nickel base alloys

The creep properties at 1365 K of several oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloys were studied, where the creep exposures involved low strains, on the order of 1% or less, after nominally 100 hours of testing. It was found that ODS alloys possess threshold stresses for creep. Creep in polycrystalline ODS alloys is an inhomogeneous process. The threshold stresses in large grain size ODS Ni-20Cr and Ni-16Cr-4/5Al type alloys are dependent on the grain aspect ratio.

Investigation of a CTS solar cell test patch under simulated geomagnetic substorm charging conditions

The CTS solar array technology experiment which consists of a solar cell test patch on the Kapton-substrate solar array and the appertaining electronics unit has been operating in geostationary orbit for nearly 1 year without any malfunction although it is expected to be strongly influenced by charging effects on the array surface. The results of a post-launch test program show that the experiment would not survive a discharge due to electrostatic charging in the test patch area. In a simulated substorm, environment discharges were obtained only below a temperature threshold of about 30 C. With solar illumination, this threshold is reduced below 0 C.

Optimization of MLS receivers for multipath environments

Optimal design studies of MLS angle-receivers and a theoretical design-study of MLS DME-receivers are reported. The angle-receiver results include an integration of the scan data processor and tracking filter components of the optimal receiver into a unified structure. An extensive simulation study comparing the performance of the optimal and threshold receivers in a wide variety of representative dynamical interference environments was made. The optimal receiver was generally superior. A simulation of the performance of the threshold and delay-and-compare receivers in various signal environments was performed. An analysis of combined errors due to lateral reflections from vertical structures with small differential path delays, specular ground reflections with neglible differential path delays, and thermal noise in the receivers is provided.

EPRI-NASA Cooperative Project on Stress Corrosion Cracking of Zircaloys

Examinations of the inside surface of irradiated fuel cladding from two reactors show the Zircaloy cladding is exposed to a number of aggressive substances, among them iodine, cadmium, and iron-contaminated cesium. Iodine-induced stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of well characterized samples of Zircaloy sheet and tubing was studied. Results indicate that a threshold stress must be exceeded for iodine SCC to occur. The existence of a threshold stress indicates that crack formation probably is the key step in iodine SCC. Investigation of the crack formation process showed that the cracks responsible for SCC failure nucleated at locations in the metal surface that contained higher than average concentrations of alloying elements and impurities. A four-stage model of iodine SCC is proposed based on the experimental results and the relevance of the observations to pellet cladding interaction failures is discussed.

Cross sections relevant to gamma ray astronomy

Gamma-ray production cross sections were measured for protons and alpha particles incident on targets consisting of nuclei of high cosmic abundance: C-12, N-14, O-16, Ne-20, Mg-24, Si-28 and Fe-56. Solid or gaseous targets were bombarded by monoenergetic beams of protons and alpha particles, and gamma rays were detected by two Ge(Li) detectors. The proton energy for each target was varied from threshold to about 24 MeV (lab); for alphas the range was from threshold to about 27 MeV. For most transitions, it was possible to measure the total cross section by placing the detectors at 30.5 deg and 109.9 deg where the fourth-order Legendre polynomial is zero. For the case of the 16O (E sub gamma = 6.13 MeV, multipolarity E3) cross sections, yields were measured at four angles. Absolute cross sections were obtained by integrating the beam current and by measuring target thicknesses and detector efficiencies. The Ge(Li) detector resolution was a few keV (although the peak widths were greater, due to Doppler broadening).

The 1.1 micrometer and visible emission semiconductor diode lasers

In (AlGa)As, the first of three alloy systems studied, Continuous Wave (CW) operation was obtained at room temperature at a wavelength as low as 7260 A. Reliability in this system was studied in the incoherent mode. Zinc doped devices had significant degradation, whereas Ge or Ge plus Zi doped devices had none. The Al2O3 facet coatings were shown to significantly reduce facet deterioration in all types of lasers, longer wavelength units of that type having accumulated (at the time of writing) 22,000 hours with little if any degradation. A CL study of thin (AlGa)As layers revealed micro fluctuation in composition. A macro-scale fluctuation was observed by electroreflectance. An experimental and theoretical study of the effect of stripe width on the threshold current was carried out. Emission below 7000 A was obtained in VPE grown Ga(AsP) (In,Ga)P with CW operation at 10 C. Lasers and LED's were made by LPE in (InGa) (AsP). Laser thresholds of 5 kA/cm2 were obtained, while LED efficiences were on the order of 2%. Incoherent life test over 6000 hours showed no degradation.

Effect of vibration duration on human discomfort

The duration effects of random vertical vibration on passenger discomfort were studied in a simulated section of an aircraft cabin configured to seat six persons in tourist-class style. Variables of the study included time of exposure (0.25 min to 60 min) and the rms amplitude of vibration (0.025g to 0.100g). The vibrations had a white noise spectrum with a bandwidth of 10 Hz centered at 5 Hz. Data indicate that the discomfort threshold occurred at an rms vertical acceleration level of 0.027g for all durations of vibration. However, for acceleration levels that exceeded the discomfort threshold, a systematic decrease in discomfort occurred as a function of increasing duration of vibration. For the range of accelerations used, the magnitude of the discomfort decrement was shown to be independent of acceleration level. The results suggest that discomfort from vertical vibration applied in the frequency range at which humans are most sensitive decreases with longer exposure, which is the opposite of the recommendation of the International Standard ISO 2631-1974 (E) Guide for the Evaluation of Human Exposure to Whole-Body Vibration.

Noise-Induced Building Vibrations Caused by Concorde and Conventional Aircraft Operations at Dulles and Kennedy International Airports

Outdoor and indoor noise levels resulting from aircraft flyovers and certain nonaircraft events were recorded, as were the associated vibration levels in the walls, windows, and floors at building test sites. In addition, limited subjective tests were conducted to examine the human detection and annoyance thresholds for building vibration and rattle caused by aircraft noise. Representative peak levels of aircraft noise-induced building vibrations are reported and comparisons are made with structural damage criteria and with vibration levels induced by common domestic events. In addition, results of a pilot study are reported which indicate the human detection threshold for noise-induced floor vibrations.

Double ionization of CO2 by photon impact

Double ionization of CO2 by photon impact from the double-ionization threshold at energies of 36.2 eV (342 A) to 110 eV (113 A) has been observed. The ratio of doubly to singly charged ions shows a linear rise with photon energy for approximately 15 eV above the threshold and reaches a constant value of about 2% between 67 and 110 eV.

Picosecond laser-induced breakdown at 5321 and 5347 A - Observation of frequency-dependent behavior

A study is presented of picosecond laser-induced breakdown at 3547 and 5321 A of several materials. The thresholds obtained for breakdown at 5321 A are compared to previous results obtained at 1.064 microns using the same laser system. This comparison illustrates the transition of bulk laser-induced breakdown as it becomes increasingly frequency dependent. UV picosecond pulses are obtained by mixing 5321 A and 1.064 micron pulses in a KH2PO4 crystal. Upper and lower bounds on the 3547 A breakdown threshold are defined, although some effects of walk-off distortion and self-focusing are observed. The results are discussed with reference to models for the intrinsic processes involved in the breakdown, i.e., avalanche and multiphoton ionization.

Accelerated step-temperature aging of Al/x/Ga/1-x/As heterojunction laser diodes

Double-heterojunction A2(0.3)Ga(0.7)As/Al(0.08)Ga(0.92)As lasers (oxide-striped and Al2O3 facet coated) were subjected to step-temperature aging from 60 to 100 C. The change in threshold current and spontaneous output was monitored at 22 C. The average time required for a 20% pulsed threshold current increase ranges from about 500 h, when operating at 100 C, to about 5000 h at a 70 C ambience. At 22 C, the extrapolated time is about 1 million h. The time needed for a 50% spontaneous emission reduction is of the same order of magnitude. The resulting activation energies are approximately 0.95 eV for laser degradation and approximately 1.1 eV for the spontaneous output decrease

Low energy ionizing collisions between N2 and CO beam molecules and CO, N2, NO, CH4, and CO2 target molecules

Absolute total negative charge production cross sections for N2 + CO, CO + N2, CO + CO, N2 + NO, N2 + CH4, and N2 + CO2 collisions are reported, and a simple model of collisions is discussed. The cross sections were measured to within about 1 eV of their thresholds. Specific reaction channels were investigated by referring to mass spectrometric identification of the product ions scattered in the forward direction, and these product ion identifications were used to explain characteristic structures in the total charge production cross sections in the near-threshold regions. The extent of the importance of dissociative ionization and 'simple' ionization in the studied collisions at low energy is considered, and charge transfer cross sections for (CO)+ + CO, CO(+) + CH4, and N2(+) + CH4 are presented.

Red-emitting Ga/As,P///In,Ga/P heterojunction lasers

The paper describes in detail the properties of vapor-grown double-heterojunction lasers of Ga(As,P)/(In,Ga)P with room-temperature threshold current densities as low as 3400 A/sq cm at 7000 A and 6600 A/sq cm at 6800 A. These thresholds are three to eight times smaller than those of (Al,Ga)As lasers in this wavelength range due to the shorter-wavelength direct-indirect transition in Ga(As,P). The optical and electrical characteristics of the Ga(As,P)/(In,Ga)P lasers are found to be similar to those of (Al,Ga)As, with fundamental transverse-mode operation to 70 C, and spontaneous carrier lifetimes between 5 and 8 nsec typically observed at low current densities.

Studies in optical parallel processing

Threshold and A/D devices for converting a gray scale image into a binary one were investigated for all-optical and opto-electronic approaches to parallel processing. Integrated optical logic circuits (IOC) and optical parallel logic devices (OPA) were studied as an approach to processing optical binary signals. In the IOC logic scheme, a single row of an optical image is coupled into the IOC substrate at a time through an array of optical fibers. Parallel processing is carried out out, on each image element of these rows, in the IOC substrate and the resulting output exits via a second array of optical fibers. The OPAL system for parallel processing which uses a Fabry-Perot interferometer for image thresholding and analog-to-digital conversion, achieves a higher degree of parallel processing than is possible with IOC.

Experimental and theoretical investigations concerning a frequency filter behavior of the human retina regarding electric pulse currents

Investigation involving patients with injuries in the visual nervous system are discussed. This led to the identification of the epithelial ganglion of the retina as a frequency filter. Threshold curves of the injured visual organs were compared with threshold curves obtained with a control group as a basis for identification. A model which considers the epithelial ganglion as a homogeneous cell layer in which adjacent neurons interact is discussed. It is shown the behavior of the cells against alternating exciting currents can be explained.

Calculation of resonant effects in electron-impact excitation of positive ions Application to oxygen VII

The general reaction theory of Feshbach is applied to the calculation of resonant effects in near-threshold electron-positive-ion excitation. The theory divides configuration space into open- and closed-channel parts, resonance effects being described by the closed-channel part. The open-channel part is handled in a distorted-wave approximation to the set of open-channel coupled equations. Various methods are suggested for handling the closed-channel part. However, an 'attached-excited-target approximation' is used explicitly, which is further approximated by a set of uncoupled closed-channel equations. As an example, the 1 1S-2 1P excitation cross section of O VII below the 3 3S threshold is calculated. Various distorted-wave approximations are investigated and results from most of them are quite similar. Resonant effects arising from the attachment of the colliding electron with the 3 3S state are found to be small, but other close-lying n = 3 states have not yet been included.

Neutrinos from neutron stars

A calculation of the flux of ultra-high energy neutrinos from galactic neutron stars is presented. The calculation is used to determine the number of point sources detectable at the sensitivity threshold of a proposed deep underwater muon and neutrino detector array. The detector array would have a point source detection threshold of about 100 eV/sq cm-sec. Analysis of neutrino luminosities and the number of detectable sources suggests that the deep underwater detector may make a few discoveries. In particular, a suspected neutron star in the Cyg X-3 source seems a promising target for the deep underwater array.

Maximum likelihood estimation of label imperfections and its use in the identification of mislabeled patterns

The problem of estimating label imperfections and the use of the estimation in identifying mislabeled patterns is presented. Expressions for the maximum likelihood estimates of classification errors and a priori probabilities are derived from the classification of a set of labeled patterns. Expressions also are given for the asymptotic variances of probability of correct classification and proportions. Simple models are developed for imperfections in the labels and for classification errors and are used in the formulation of a maximum likelihood estimation scheme. Schemes are presented for the identification of mislabeled patterns in terms of threshold on the discriminant functions for both two-class and multiclass cases. Expressions are derived for the probability that the imperfect label identification scheme will result in a wrong decision and are used in computing thresholds. The results of practical applications of these techniques in the processing of remotely sensed multispectral data are presented.
