Contact solitons as spin pistons in one-dimensional ferromagnetic channels

Ferromagnetic channels subject to spin injection have been theoretically shown to sustain dissipative exchange flows (DEFs). In the strong injection regime, a soliton is stabilized at the injection site, which has been termed a contact soliton DEF or CS-DEF. Here, in this work, we investigate the modulation of CS-DEFs as a mechanism to inject magnons into a DEF. By varying the injection current, the parameters connecting the soliton with the DEF via a boundary layer are varied. These lead to a modification in the DEF which is interpreted as a spin piston. The injected magnons follow the expected dispersion relation of DEFs, akin to the Bogoliubov–de Gennes dispersion relation. As a result, this work demonstrates that changes in the injected current can pump magnons along a ferromagnetic channel via dissipative exchange flows.

Understanding temperature-dependent SU(3) spin dynamics in the S = 1 antiferromagnet Ba 2 FeSi 2 O 7

Quantum magnets admit more than one classical limit and N-level systems with strong single-ion anisotropy are expected to be described by a classical approximation based on SU(N) coherent states. Here we test this hypothesis by modeling finite temperature inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data of the effective spin-one antiferromagnet Ba 2 FeSi 2 O 7 . The measured dynamic structure factor is calculated with a generalized Landau-Lifshitz dynamics for SU(3) spins. Unlike the traditional classical limit based on SU(2) coherent states, the results obtained with classical SU(3) spins are in good agreement with the measured temperature dependent spectrum. The SU(3) approach developed here provides a general framework to understand the broad class of materials comprising weakly coupled antiferromagnetic dimers, trimers, or tetramers, and magnets with strong single-ion anisotropy.

Topological Hall effect in magnetic topological insulator films

Geometric Berry phase can be induced either by spin–orbit coupling, giving rise to the anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnetic materials, or by chiral spin texture, such as skyrmions, leading to the topological Hall effect. Recent experiments have revealed that both phenomena can occur in topological insulator films with magnetic doping, thus providing us with an intriguing platform to study the interplay between these two phenomena. In this work, we report on a numerical simulation of the anomalous Hall and topological Hall effects in a four-band model that can properly describe the quantum well states in the magnetic topological insulator films by combining Landauer–Büttiker formula and the iterative Green’s function method. Our numerical results suggest that spin–orbit coupling in this model plays a different role in the quantum transport in the clean and disordered limits. In the clean limit, spin–orbit coupling mainly influences the longitudinal transport but does not have much effect on topological Hall conductance. In the disordered limit, the longitudinal transport is determined by disorder scattering and spin–orbit coupling is found to affect strongly the topological Hall conductance. Here, this sharp contrast unveils a dramatic interplay between spin–orbit coupling and disorder effect in topological Hall effect in magnetic topological insulator systems.

Possible Spin-Triplet Excitonic Insulator in the Ultraquantum Limit of HfTe 5

More than 50 years ago, excitonic insulators formed by the pairing of electrons and holes due to Coulomb interactions were first predicted [A. N. Kozlov and L. A. Maksimov, Sov. J. Exp. Theor. Phys. 21, 790 (1965); L. V. Keldysh and Y. V. Kopaev, Sov. Phys. Solid State 6, 2219 (1965); D. Jérome, T. M. Rice, and W. Kohn, Phys. Rev. 158, 462 (1967)]. Since then, excitonic insulators have been observed in various classes of materials, including quantum Hall bilayers, graphite, transition metal chalcogenides, and more recently in moiré superlattices. In these excitonic insulators, an electron and a hole with the same spin bind together, and the resulting exciton is a spin singlet. Here, we report the experimental observation of a spin-triplet excitonic insulator in the ultra-quantum limit of a three-dimensional topological material HfTe 5 . We observe that the spin-polarized zeroth Landau bands dispersing along the field direction cross each other beyond a characteristic magnetic field in HfTe 5 , forming the one-dimensional Weyl mode. Transport measurements reveal the emergence of a gap of about 2⁢5⁢0 μ⁢eV when the field surpasses a critical threshold. By performing the material-specific modeling, we identify this gap as a consequence of a spin-triplet exciton formation, where electrons and holes with opposite spin form bound states, and the translational symmetry is preserved. The system reaches charge neutrality following the gap opening, as evidenced by the zero Hall conductivity over a wide magnetic field range (10–72 T). In conclusion, our finding of the spin-triplet excitonic insulator paves the way for studying novel spin transport including spin superfluidity, spin Josephson currents, and Coulomb drag of spin currents in analogy to the transport properties associated with the layer pseudospin in quantum Hall bilayers.

Weakly coupled alternating S = 1 2 chains in the distorted honeycomb lattice compound Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6

Spin- 1 2 chains with alternating antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) couplings exhibit quantum entanglement as the integer-spin Haldane chains and might be similarly utilized for quantum computations. Such alternating AF-FM chains have been proposed to be realized in the distorted honeycomb lattice compound Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 , but to confirm this picture a comprehensive understanding of the exchange interactions including terms outside of the idealized model is required. Here, we employ neutron scattering to study the spin dynamics in Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 and accurately determine the coupling strengths through the random phase approximation and density functional theory approaches. We find the AF and FM intrachain couplings are the dominant terms in the spin Hamiltonian, while the interchain couplings are AF but perturbative. This hierarchy in the coupling strengths and the alternating signs of the intrachain couplings can be understood through their different exchange paths. Our results establish Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 as a weakly coupled alternating AF-FM chain compound and reveal the robustness of the gapped ground state in alternating chains under weak interchain couplings.

Hidden-strangeness tetraquarks in the dynamical diquark model

The dynamical diquark model describes multiquark exotic hadrons in terms of diquark components nucleated by heavy quarks and successfully explains multiple features of hidden-charm and hidden-bottom exotics. Here, we apply the model to the marginally heavy case of hidden-strange states to probe whether mesons near 2 GeV with peculiar properties, such as 𝜙⁡(2170), 𝑓 2 ⁡(2340), and 𝑋⁡(2370), are possible tetraquark candidates. We calculate spin-multiplet average masses using potentials obtained through lattice simulations and quark models, and we also describe the detailed spectra of the expected multiplets as a diagnostic to discern the nature of future hadrons likely to be discovered in this mass region by experiments at facilities such as BESIII, JLab, and the EIC.

Spectral function of the $J_1$ – $J_2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice

Spectral probes, such as neutron scattering, are crucial for characterizing excitations in quantum many-body systems and the properties of quantum materials. Among the most elusive phases of matter are quantum spin liquids, which have no long-range order even at zero temperature and host exotic fractionalized excitations with nontrivial statistics. These phases can occur in frustrated quantum magnets, such as the paradigmatic Heisenberg model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions on the triangular lattice, the so-called $J_1$ – $J_2$ model. In this work, we compute the spectral function using large-scale matrix product state simulations across the three different phases of this model's phase diagram, including a quantum spin-liquid phase at intermediate $J_2$/$J_1$. Despite a plethora of theoretical and experimental studies, the exact nature of this phase is still contested, with the dominant candidates being a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$, a gapless U(1) Dirac, and a spinon Fermi surface quantum spin-liquid state. We find a V-shaped spectrum near the center of the Brillouin zone ($Γ$ point), a key signature of a spinon Fermi surface, observed in prior neutron scattering experiments. However, we find a small gap near the $Γ$ point, ruling out such a phase. Furthermore, we find localized gapless excitations at the corner of the Brillouin zone boundary (K point) and the middle of the edge of the Brillouin zone boundary (M point), ruling out the gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin-liquid phase. Here, our results imply that the intermediate spin-liquid phase is a gapless $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid, and provide clear signatures to detect this phase in future neutron scattering experiments.

Half-ice, half-fire-driven ultranarrow phase crossover in one-dimensional decorated 𝑞-state Potts ferrimagnets: An AI-co-led exploration

OpenAI’s reasoning model o3-mini-high was used to carry out an exact analytic study of one-dimensional ferrimagnetic site- and bond-decorated 𝑞-state Potts models. We demonstrate that the finite-temperature ultranarrow phase crossover (UNPC), driven by a hidden “half-ice, half-fire” state recently discovered in the 𝑞=2 case (Ising model), persists for 𝑞>2. Moreover, we identify unique features for 𝑞>2, including the dome structure in the field-temperature phase diagram, and for large 𝑞 a secondary high-temperature UNPC to the fully disordered paramagnetic state. As the UNPC quickly approaches a genuine transition by enhancing 𝐽, the interaction between the backbone spins, two distinct behaviors emerge: In the site-decorated Potts model, 𝑇 0 is independent of 𝐽 and thus remains unchanged (Type-I UNPC), and in the bond-decorated Potts model with 𝑞>2, 𝑇 0 depends on 𝐽 and quickly shifts toward a finite temperature as 𝐽 increases (Type-II UNPC). These results establish a versatile framework for engineering controlled fast state-flipping switches in low-dimensional systems. Our nine-dan artificial intelligence (AI)-contribution framework assigns AI the meritorious status of AI-co-led discovery in this work.

Preparing exact eigenstates of the open XXZ chain on a quantum computer

The open spin-1/2 XXZ spin chain with diagonal boundary magnetic fields is the paradigmatic example of a quantum integrable model with open boundary conditions. Here, we formulate a quantum algorithm for preparing Bethe states of this model, corresponding to real solutions of the Bethe equations. The algorithm is probabilistic, with a success probability that decreases with the number of down spins. For a Bethe state of L spins with M down spins, which contains a total of $(^{L}_{M})$ $2^{M} M!$ terms, the algorithm requires L+M 2 +2M qubits.

Quench dynamics of two-component dipolar fermions subject to a quasiperiodic potential

Motivated by recent experiments in fermionic polar gases, we study the nonequilibrium dynamics of two-component dipolar fermions subject to a quasiperiodic potential. We investigate the localization of charge and spin degrees of freedom time evolving with a long-range spin-SU(2) symmetric fermionic Hamiltonian by calculating experimentally accessible dynamical observables. To study the nonequilibrium dynamics, we start the time evolution with two initial states at half-filling: (i) product state with doublons |↑↓0↑↓0↑↓0↑↓0↑↓$\rangle$ and (ii) product state with singlons |↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓↑↓$\rangle$. We carried out the real-time evolution via the fermionic Hamiltonian using exact diagonalization (ED) and the time-dependent variational principle (TDVP) for finite matrix product states (MPS), within experimentally relevant timescales. For the product state with doublons, we observe a delocalized to localized phase transition varying disorder strengths by monitoring the decay of charge imbalance with time. For the long-range interacting Hamiltonian of our focus, and in the presence of strong enough disorder, starting the time evolution with singlons we find a strong reduction in the spin delocalization, contrary to results of previous studies using the disordered short-range (on-site) Hubbard model with SU(2) symmetry. In addition to the quench dynamics, we also demonstrate the localization of charge and spin in the full energy spectrum of the long-range spin-SU(2) symmetric Hamiltonian by monitoring spin and charge autocorrelation functions. Finally, our predictions for localization of both charge and spin should be observable in ultracold experiments with fermionic dipolar atoms subject to a quasiperiodic potential.

Large spin splittings due to the orbital degree of freedom and spin textures in a ferroelectric nitride perovskite

First-principles simulations are conducted to predict that ferroelectric nitride perovskite LaWN 3 not only exhibits large spin splittings (2.7 eV Å) but also possesses unique spin textures for some of its conduction levels. Such spin splittings around the Γ and L points cannot be interpreted as a typical mixture of Rashba or Dresselhaus configurations but rather require the development of four-band $\textit{k ∙ p}$ models with high-order terms. We further identify that, for some bands, spin splittings can be greatly contributed by the pure orbital degree of freedom (PODF), a unique character of our four-band Hamiltonian compared to the traditional two-band version. The concept of PODF-enhanced spin splittings paves a way for designing materials with large spin splittings. Moreover, the energy levels possessing such large splittings and complex spin textures can be brought close to the conduction-band minimum by applying epitaxial strain.

First Precision Measurement of the Parity Violating Asymmetry in Cold Neutron Capture on 3 He

We report the first precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in the direction of proton momentum with respect to the neutron spin, in the reaction 3 He(n,p) 3 H, using the capture of polarized cold neutrons in an unpolarized active 3 He target. The asymmetry is a result of the weak interaction between nucleons, which remains one of the least well-understood aspects of electroweak theory. The measurement provides an important benchmark for modern effective field theory and potential model calculations. Measurements like this are necessary to determine the spin-isospin structure of the hadronic weak interaction. Our asymmetry result is A PV =[1.55±0.97(stat)±0.24(sys)]×10 -8 , which has the smallest uncertainty of any hadronic parity-violating asymmetry measurement so far.

Two-channel multi-impurity Kondo model: RKKY-induced criticality

We show that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasua-Yoisida interaction between overscreened spins in two-channel Kondo impurity systems is a relevant perturbation when the number of impurities N is greater than 3 driving the system to a new quantum critical point with anomalous dimensions $\frac{1}{(𝑁+1)}$ for the spin operator and the Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat scales as 𝛾 ∼ 𝑇 −$\frac{3}{𝑁+1}$ . The critical point universal properties are relevant to many strong correlation problems, such as impurity placed in a Majorana metal and the multichannel Kondo lattice model of heavy fermion materials. In conclusion, we discuss relevance of our results for cluster DMFT studies of quantum criticality.

Constraints on the two-dimensional pseudospin-$\frac{1}{2}$Mott insulator description of $\mathrm{Sr_2IrO_4}$

Sr 2 IrO 4 has often been described via a simple, one-band pseudospin-$\frac{1}{2}$ model subject to electron-electron interactions on a square lattice, fostering analogies with cuprate superconductors believed to be well described by a similar model. In this work we argue - based on a detailed study of the low-energy electronic structure by circularly polarized spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with dynamical mean-field theory calculations - that a pseudospin-$\frac{1}{2}$ model fails to capture the full complexity of the system. We show instead that a realistic multiband Hubbard Hamiltonian, accounting for the full correlated t 2g manifold, provides a detailed description of the interplay between spin-orbital entanglement and electron-electron interactions and yields quantitative agreement with experiments. Our analysis establishes that the j 3/2 states make up a substantial percentage of the low-energy spectral weight, i.e., approximately 74% as determined from the integration of the j-resolved spectral function in the 0 to -1.64eV energy range. Therefore, the results in our work are of relevance not only to Ir-based materials but also more generally to multiorbital materials with closely spaced energy scales.

Weak-coupling theory of neutron scattering as a probe of altermagnetism

Inelastic neutron scattering provides a powerful probe of the magnetic excitations of quantum magnets. Altermagnets have recently emerged as a new class of magnets with vanishing net magnetization characteristic of antiferromagnets and with a spin-split electronic structure typical of ferromagnets. Here we introduce a minimal Hubbard model with two-sublattice orthorhombic anisotropy as a framework to study altermagnetism. Using unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations, we find an altermagnetic state for this model that evolves from a metallic state to an insulating state with increasing Hubbard-U Coulomb repulsion. We then examine the inelastic neutron scattering response in these states using random-phase approximation calculations of the dynamic spin susceptibility χ"(q,ω). We find that the magnetic excitation spectrum depends on its chirality for q along certain directions in reciprocal space, an observation that may be used in inelastic neutron scattering experiments as a probe of altermagnetism.

Influence of globally spin-aligned vector mesons to the measurements of the chiral magnetic effect in heavy-ion collisions

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) in high-energy heavy-ion collisions arises from the interplay between the chirality imbalance and the intense magnetic field and will cause a charge separation along the magnetic field direction. While the CME search is still ongoing in experiments, the non-CME contributions need to be excluded from the CME observables. In this work, we examine the influence of globally spin-aligned ρ mesons on the γ 112 correlator, the R Ψ 2 (ΔS) correlator, and the signed balance functions, via a toy model and a multiphase transport model (AMPT). We find that the CME observables are sensitive to the 00-component of the spin density matrix, ρ 00 : they receive positive (negative) contributions when ρ 00 is larger (smaller) than 1/3.

Beyond fragmented dopant dynamics in quantum spin lattices: Robust localization and non-Gaussian diffusion

The motion of dopants in magnetic spin lattices has received tremendous attention for at least four decades due to its connection to high-temperature superconductivity. Despite these efforts, we lack a complete understanding of their behavior, especially out of the equilibrium and at nonzero temperatures. In this paper, we take a significant step towards a much deeper understanding based on state-of-the-art matrix-product-state calculations. In particular, we investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of a dopant in two-leg 𝑡−𝐽 ladders with antiferromagnetic XXZ spin interactions. In the Ising limit, we find that the dopant is localized for all investigated nonzero temperatures due to an emergent disordered potential, with a localization length controlled by the underlying correlation length of the spin lattice, which increases exponentially with decreasing temperature. The dopant, hereby, only delocalizes asymptotically in the zero temperature limit. This greatly generalizes the localization effect discovered recently in Hilbert space fragmented models [Phys. Rev. Res. 6, 023325 (2024), SciPost Phys. Core 7, 054 (2024)]. In the presence of spin-exchange processes at rate 𝛼, the dopant diffuses with a diffusion coefficient, 𝐷 ℎ , depending nonmonotonically on 𝛼. It initially increases linearly as 𝐷 ℎ ∝ 𝛼 for 𝛼 ≪ 1 before dropping off as 𝛼 −1 for 𝛼 > 1. Moreover, we show that the underlying spin dynamics at infinite temperature behaves qualitatively the same, albeit with important quantitative differences. We substantiate these findings by showing that the dynamics features self-similar scaling behavior, which strongly deviates from the Gaussian behavior of regular diffusion, especially for weak spin exchange. Finally, we show that the diffusion coefficient 𝐷 ℎ follows an Arrhenius relation at high temperatures, whereby it is exponentially suppressed upon cooling.

Toward a 3d Ising model with a weakly-coupled string theory dual

It has long been expected that the 3d Ising model can be thought of as a string theory, where one interprets the domain walls that separate up spins from down spins as two-dimensional string worldsheets. The usual Ising Hamiltonian measures the area of these domain walls. This theory has string coupling of unit magnitude. We add new local terms to the Ising Hamiltonian that further weight each spin configuration by a factor depending on the genus of the corresponding domain wall, resulting in a new 3d Ising model that has a tunable bare string coupling g_s g s . We use a combination of analytical and numerical methods to analyze the phase structure of this model as g_s g s is varied. We study statistical properties of the topology of worldsheets and discuss the prospects of using this new deformation at weak string coupling to find a worldsheet description of the 3d Ising transition.
