Bulk properties and multi-particle correlations in large and small systems
Charged particle production is calculated in a hybrid framework consisting of the IP-Glasma initial state, Music viscous relativistic fluid dynamics, and the UrQMD microscopic hadronic cascade. Using one set of parameters, we compute observables for a large variety of collision systems. Furthermore, we compare to experimental data in p+p, p+Pb, Xe+Xe, Au+Au and Pb+Pb collisions at various energies, and make predictions for potential O+O runs at RHIC and LHC.

Targeting colorectal cancer with small-molecule inhibitors of ALDH1B1
Aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDHs) are promising cancer drug targets, as certain isoforms are required for the survival of stem-like tumor cells. We have discovered selective inhibitors of ALDH1B1, a mitochondrial enzyme that promotes colorectal and pancreatic cancer. We describe bicyclic imidazoliums and guanidines that target the ALDH1B1 active site with comparable molecular interactions and potencies. Both pharmacophores abrogate ALDH1B1 function in cells; however, the guanidines circumvent an off-target mitochondrial toxicity exhibited by the imidazoliums. Our lead isoform-selective guanidinyl antagonists of ALDHs exhibit proteome-wide target specificity, and they selectively block the growth of colon cancer spheroids and organoids. Finally, we have used genetic and chemical perturbations to elucidate the ALDH1B1-dependent transcriptome, which includes genes that regulate mitochondrial metabolism and ribosomal function. Our findings support an essential role for ALDH1B1 in colorectal cancer, provide molecular probes for studying ALDH1B1 functions and yield leads for developing ALDH1B1-targeting therapies.

Cellulose nanofibrils and nanocrystals in confined flow: Single-particle dynamics to collective alignment revealed through scanning small-angle x-ray scattering and numerical simulations
Nanostructured materials made through flow-assisted assembly of proteinaceous or polymeric nanosized fibrillar building blocks are promising contenders for a family of high-performance biocompatible materials in a wide variety of applications. Optimization of these processes relies on improving our knowledge of the physical mechanisms from nano- to macroscale and especially understanding the alignment of elongated nanoparticles in flows. Here, we study the full projected orientation distributions of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and nanofibrils (CNFs) in confined flow using scanning microbeam SAXS. For CNCs, we further compare with a simulated system of dilute Brownian ellipsoids, which agrees well at dilute concentrations. However, increasing CNC concentration to a semidilute regime results in locally arranged domains called tactoids, which aid in aligning the CNC at low shear rates, but limit alignment at higher rates. Similarly, shear alignment of CNF at semidilute conditions is also limited owing to probable bundle or flock formation of the highly entangled nanofibrils. Finally, this work provides a quantitative comparison of full projected orientation distributions of elongated nanoparticles in confined flow and provides an important stepping stone towards predicting and controlling processes to create nanostructured materials on an industrial scale.

Development of a high-fidelity multi-cycle model of the NuScale small modular reactor using VERA
With growing renewables penetration, there is increased interest in flexible power operation for nuclear reactors. For multi-unit SMRs, in particular the NuScale SMR, which is an integral pressurized water reactor, there are opportunities to optimize flexible power operation across multiple units to limit the degradation of structural and control components. Here, we focus on degradation of in-core components, specifically the control rods and reactor pressure vessel. To perform these studies a high-fidelity, multi-cycle representation of the NuScale SMR is required, with a detailed representation of the structural and control components. To this end, the NuScale SMR has been modelled using the Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA) software. The entire transition to equilibrium is simulated, from Cycle 1 through to the equilibrium cycle. The equilibrium cycle model shows a good agreement with the NuScale design certification application (DCA) results, with differences attributable to a combination of using public domain data for the present study, and methodological differences. K-effective, power distributions, reactivity coefficients, and boron letdown curves are compared and all found to closely match. This shows that the VERA model is suitable for further studies.
