A Pro‐Angiogenic Immunoprotective Membrane for Cell Therapies

Abstract Immunoisolation strategies that rely on porous membranes play an important role in cell transplantation therapies to protect cells from the host's immune system. These membranes must possess immunoprotective properties while facilitating the transport of nutrients and cell products to maintain the functional integrity of encapsulated cells. An easy and scalable process is described to fabricate a dual function porous polymeric membrane that shields cells against immune cell attack and promotes vascularization to address the nutritional and oxygen requirements of transplanted cells. The fabrication process results in a membrane cross‐section with a gradient of nanopores to micropores that support cell immunoisolation and interfacial vascularization requirements, respectively. The membranes demonstrate excellent cell compatibility and effectively prevent T cell transmigration without compromising glucose diffusion and oxygen permeability. In a murine subcutaneous implantation model, membranes are stable for 60 days and exhibit significantly reduced fibrous capsules, with enhanced vascularization near the membrane. These porous polymeric membranes can potentially be used as pro‐angiogenic immunoprotective membranes for cell transplantation applications where maximizing cell viability and function is of critical importance.

Observation of Electrically Tunable van Hove Singularities in Twisted Bilayer Graphene from NanoARPES

The possibility of triggering correlated phenomena by placing a singularity of the density of states near the Fermi energy remains an intriguing avenue toward engineering the properties of quantum materials. Twisted bilayer graphene is a key material in this regard because the superlattice produced by the rotated graphene layers introduces a van Hove singularity and flat bands near the Fermi energy that cause the emergence of numerous correlated phases, including superconductivity. Direct demonstration of electrostatic control of the superlattice bands over a wide energy range has, so far, been critically missing. This work examines the effect of electrical doping on the electronic band structure of twisted bilayer graphene using a back-gated device architecture for angle-resolved photoemission measurements with a nano-focused light spot. A twist angle of 12.2° is selected such that the superlattice Brillouin zone is sufficiently large to enable identification of van Hove singularities and flat band segments in momentum space. Finally, the doping dependence of these features is extracted over an energy range of 0.4 eV, expanding the combinations of twist angle and doping where they can be placed at the Fermi energy and thereby induce new correlated electronic phases in twisted bilayer graphene.

High–Nickel NMA: A Cobalt–Free Alternative to NMC and NCA Cathodes for Lithium–Ion Batteries

High-nickel LiNi 1–x–y Mn x Co y O 2 (NMC) and LiNi 1–x–y Co x Al y O 2 (NCA) are the cathode materials of choice for next-generation high-energy lithium-ion batteries. Both NMC and NCA contain cobalt, an expensive and scarce metal generally believed to be essential for their electrochemical performance. Herein, a high-Ni LiNi 1–x–y Mn x Al y O 2 (NMA) cathode of desirable electrochemical properties is demonstrated benchmarked against NMC, NCA, and Al–Mg-codoped NMC (NMCAM) of identical Ni content (89 mol%) synthesized in-house. Despite a slightly lower specific capacity, high-Ni NMA operates at a higher voltage by ≈40 mV and shows no compromise in rate capability relative to NMC and NCA. In pouch cells paired with graphite, high-Ni NMA outperforms both NMC and NCA and only slightly trails NMCAM and a commercial cathode after 1000 deep cycles. Further, the superior thermal stability of NMA to NMC, NCA, and NMCAM is shown using differential scanning calorimetry. Here, considering the flexibility in compositional tuning and immediate synthesis scalability of high-Ni NMA very similar to NCA and NMC, this study opens a new space for cathode material development for next-generation high-energy, cobalt-free Li-ion batteries.
