SIERRA/Aero Theory Manual (V.5.0)

SIERRA/Aero is a compressible fluid dynamics program intended to solve a wide variety compressible fluid flows including transonic and hypersonic problems. This document describes the commands for assembling a fluid model for analysis with this module, henceforth referred to simply as Aero for brevity. Aero is an application developed using the SIERRA Toolkit (STK). The intent of STK is to provide a set of tools for handling common tasks that programmers encounter when developing a code for numerical simulation. For example, components of STK provide field allocation and management, and parallel input/output of field and mesh data. These services also allow the development of coupled mechanics analysis software for a massively parallel computing environment.

Cold Plasma Measurements

We have continued the simulation campaign in support of our ongoing magnetospheric cold plasma research project. This project aims to develop the next-generation particle instruments to measure the properties of the cold particle populations in the Earth’s magnetosphere. For this purpose, simulations have been performed with a Particle-In-Cell (PIC) code called the Curvilinear PIC (CPIC). The code is formulated in curvilinear geometry and couples the standard PIC algorithm with algorithms for the generation and adaptation of the underlaying computational mesh. It conforms to complex objects like spacecraft and it can place more grid points in regions where higher resolution is needed. The code also features a scalable solver based on the multigrid algorithm and it is fully parallelized via domain decomposition and MPI.

Interactive computer modeling of combustion chemistry and coalescence-dispersion modeling of turbulent combustion

An interactive computer code for simulation of a high-intensity turbulent combustor as a single point inhomogeneous stirred reactor was developed from an existing batch processing computer code CDPSR. The interactive CDPSR code was used as a guide for interpretation and direction of DOE-sponsored companion experiments utilizing Xenon tracer with optical laser diagnostic techniques to experimentally determine the appropriate mixing frequency, and for validation of CDPSR as a mixing-chemistry model for a laboratory jet-stirred reactor. The coalescence-dispersion model for finite rate mixing was incorporated into an existing interactive code AVCO-MARK I, to enable simulation of a combustor as a modular array of stirred flow and plug flow elements, each having a prescribed finite mixing frequency, or axial distribution of mixing frequency, as appropriate. Further increase the speed and reliability of the batch kinetics integrator code CREKID was increased by rewriting in vectorized form for execution on a vector or parallel processor, and by incorporating numerical techniques which enhance execution speed by permitting specification of a very low accuracy tolerance.

Spectral solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on the Connection Machine 2

The issue of solving the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on the Connection Machine 2 is addressed, for the problem of transition to turbulence of the steady flow in a channel. The spectral algorithm used serially requires O(N(4)) operations when solving the equations on an N x N x N grid; using the massive parallelism of the CM, it becomes an O(N(2)) problem. Preliminary timings of the code, written in LISP, are included and compared with a corresponding code optimized for the Cray-2 for a 128 x 128 x 101 grid.

Large-Constraint-Length, Fast Viterbi Decoder

Scheme for efficient interconnection makes VLSI design feasible. Concept for fast Viterbi decoder provides for processing of convolutional codes of constraint length K up to 15 and rates of 1/2 to 1/6. Fully parallel (but bit-serial) architecture developed for decoder of K = 7 implemented in single dedicated VLSI circuit chip. Contains six major functional blocks. VLSI circuits perform branch metric computations, add-compare-select operations, and then store decisions in traceback memory. Traceback processor reads appropriate memory locations and puts out decoded bits. Used as building block for decoders of larger K.

Numerical study of supersonic combustors by multi-block grids with mismatched interfaces

A three dimensional, finite rate chemistry, Navier-Stokes code was extended to a multi-block code with mismatched interface for practical calculations of supersonic combustors. To ensure global conservation, a conservative algorithm was used for the treatment of mismatched interfaces. The extended code was checked against one test case, i.e., a generic supersonic combustor with transverse fuel injection, examining solution accuracy, convergence, and local mass flux error. After testing, the code was used to simulate the chemically reacting flow fields in a scramjet combustor with parallel fuel injectors (unswept and swept ramps). Computational results were compared with experimental shadowgraph and pressure measurements. Fuel-air mixing characteristics of the unswept and swept ramps were compared and investigated.

A simulation study of impulsive penetration of solar wind irregularities into the magnetosphere at the dayside magnetopause

The impulsive penetration processes that occur when a plasma irregularity in the magnetosheath, modeled as a field-aligned filament, impinges on the dayside magnetopause, are investigated via a 2D magnetohydrodynamic code. It is found that, when the magnetic fields of the magnetosheath and magnetosphere are parallel or antiparallel, even plasma filaments with small initial velocities can eventually penetrate through the magnetopause and enter the magnetosphere. If the magnetic fields are not aligned, penetration will occur only if the initial kinetic energy density of the plasma filament is more than 50 times larger than the magnetic energy density due to the transverse component of the magnetic field.
