Canted antiferromagnetic phases in the candidate layered Weyl material EuMnSb 2

EuMnSb 2 is a candidate topological material which can be tuned towards a Weyl semimetal, but there are differing reports for its antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases. The coupling of bands dominated by pure Sb layers hosting topological fermions to Mn and Eu magnetic states provides a potential path to tune the topological properties. In this study we present single-crystal neutron diffraction, magnetization, and heat-capacity data as well as polycrystalline 151 Eu Mössbauer data which show that three AFM phases exist as a function of temperature, and we present a detailed analysis of the magnetic structure in each phase. The Mn magnetic sublattice orders into a C-type AFM structure below T N Mn = 323 (1) K with the ordered Mn magnetic moment μ Mn lying perpendicular to the layers. AFM ordering of the Eu sublattice occurs below T N Eu1 = 23 (1) K with the ordered Eu magnetic moment μ Eu canted away from the layer normal and μ Mn retaining its higher temperature order. μ Eu is ferromagnetically aligned within each Eu layer but exhibits a complicated AFM layer stacking. Both of these higher-temperature phases are described by magnetic space group (MSG) $\mathcal{Pn'm'a'}$ with the chemical and magnetic unit cells having the same dimensions. Cooling below T N Eu2 =9 (1) K reveals a third AFM phase where μ Mn remains unchanged but μ Eu develops an additional substantial in-plane canting. This phase has MSG $\mathcal{P11}$ $\frac{2_1}{a′}$. We also find some evidence of short-range magnetic correlations associated with the Eu between 12 K≲ T≲ 30 K . Using the determined magnetic structures, we postulate the signs of nearest-neighbor intralayer and interlayer exchange constants and the magnetic anisotropy within a general Heisenberg model. We then discuss implications of the various AFM states in EuMnSb 2 and their potential for tuning topological properties.

Workhorse minimally empirical dispersion-corrected density functional with tests for weakly bound systems: r 2 SCAN + rVV 10

SCAN+rVV10 has been demonstrated to be a versatile van der Waals (vdW) density functional that delivers good predictions of both energetic and structural properties for many types of bonding. Recently, the r 2 SCAN functional was devised as a revised form of SCAN with improved numerical stability. In this work, we refit the rVV10 functional to optimize the r 2 SCAN+rVV10 vdW density functional and test its performance for molecular interactions and layered materials. Our molecular tests demonstrate that r 2 SCAN+rVV10 outperforms its predecessor SCAN+rVV10 in both efficiency (numerical stability) and accuracy. This good performance is also found in lattice-constant predictions. In comparison with benchmark results from higher-level theories or experiments, r 2 SCAN+rVV10 yields excellent interlayer binding energies and phonon dispersions for layered materials.

Charge singlets and orbital-selective charge density wave transitions

The possibility of “orbitally selective Mott transitions” within a multiband Hubbard model, in which one orbital with large on-site electron-electron repulsion U 1 is insulating and another orbital, to which it is hybridized, with small U –1 , is metallic, is a problem of long-standing debate and investigation. In this paper we study an analogous phenomenon, the coexistence of metallic and insulating bands in a system of orbitals with different electron-phonon coupling. To this end, we examine two variants of the bilayer Holstein model: a uniform bilayer and a “Holstein-metal interface” where the electron-phonon coupling, λ, is zero in the “metallic” layer. In the uniform bilayer Holstein model, charge density wave (CDW) order dominates at small interlayer hybridization t 3 , but decreases and eventually vanishes as t 3 grows, providing a charge analog of singlet (spin liquid) physics. In the interface case, we show that CDW order penetrates into the metal layer and forms long-range CDW order at an intermediate ratio of inter- to intralayer hopping strengths, 1.4 ≲ t 3 /t ≲ 3.4. Furthermore, this is consistent with the occurrence of an “orbitally selective CDW” regime at weak t3 in which the layer with λ 1 ≠ 0 exhibits long-range charge order, but the “metallic layer” with λ –1 = 0, to which it is hybridized, does not.

Low-energy moiré phonons in twisted bilayer van der Waals heterostructures

We develop a low-energy continuum model for phonons in twisted moiré bilayers, based on a configuration-space approach. In this approach, interatomic force constants are obtained from density functional theory (DFT) calculations of untwisted bilayers with various in-plane shifts. This allows for efficient computation of phonon properties for any small twist angle, while maintaining DFT-level accuracy. Based on this framework, we show how the low-energy phonon modes, including interlayer shearing and layer-breathing modes, vary with the twist angle. As the twist angle decreases, the frequencies of the low-energy modes are reordered and the atomic displacement fields corresponding to phonon eigenmodes break translational symmetry, developing periodicity on the moiré length scale. Here, we demonstrate the capabilities of our model by calculating the phonon properties of three specific structures: bilayer graphene, bilayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), and molybdenum diselenide-tungsten diselenide (MoSe 2 -WSe 2 ).

Layer pseudospin magnetism in a transition metal dichalcogenide double-moiré system

Spontaneous order of layer pseudospins in two-dimensional bilayers is common in quantum Hall systems, where it is responsible for hysteretic responses to gate fields in states with Ising order and giant drag voltages in states with XY (spontaneous interlayer phase coherence) order. In this article we predict that layer pseudospin order will also occur in double-moiré strongly correlated two-dimensional electron systems. Here, we comment on similarities and differences in the competition between the two types of order in quantum Hall and double-moiré systems, and relate our findings to previous work on Falicov-Kimball models of electronic ferroelectrics.

Spin excitations in the kagome-lattice metallic antiferromagnet Fe 0.89 Co 0.11 Sn

Kagome-lattice materials have attracted tremendous interest due to the broad prospect for seeking superconductivity, quantum spin liquid states, and topological electronic structures. Among them, the transition-metal kagome lattices are high-profile objects for the combination of topological properties, rich magnetism, and multiple-orbital physics. Here we report an inelastic neutron scattering study on the spin dynamics of a kagome-lattice antiferromagnetic metal Fe 0.89 Co 0.11 Sn. Although the magnetic excitations can be observed up to ~250 meV, well-defined spin waves are only identified below ~90 meV and can be modeled using Heisenberg exchange with ferromagnetic in-plane nearest-neighbor coupling J 1 , in-plane next-nearest-neighbor coupling J 2 , and antiferromagnetic (AFM) interlayer coupling J c under linear spin-wave theory. Above ~90 meV, the spin waves enter the itinerant Stoner continuum and become highly damped particle-hole excitations. At the K point of the Brillouin zone, we reveal a possible band crossing of the spin wave, which indicates a potential Dirac magnon. Finally, our results uncover the evolution of the spin excitations from the planar AFM state to the axial AFM state in Fe 0.89 Co 0.11 Sn, solve the magnetic Hamiltonian for both states, and confirm the significant influence of the itinerant magnetism on the spin excitations.

Scaling behavior of order parameters for the hybrid improper ferroelectric (Ca, Sr) 3 Ti 2 O 7

Here, we show that in contrast to the conventional view of a mean-field Landau-type behavior, the oxygen octahedral tilt ($\textit{R}$) and polarization (P) in the $A_3B_2\text{O}_7$ Ruddlesden-Popper hybrid improper ferroelectric (Ca,Sr) 3 Ti 2 O 7 exhibits the scaling behavior of a 2D Ising class near the para-to-ferroelectric transition temperature ($T_c$). We also show that $\textit{P}$ exhibits an additional transition from a 2D Ising to a 3D mean-field critical behavior at a temperature $T_{\text{d}} < T_{\text{c}}$, which is driven by enhanced interlayer dipolar correlations due to an increase in the ferroelectrically active $\textit{B}$-site centered dipoles.

Magnetic ground state and perturbations of the distorted kagome Ising metal TmAgGe

Here, we present the magnetic orders and excitations of the distorted kagome intermetallic magnet TmAgGe. Using neutron single crystal diffraction we identify the propagation vectors k = ($\frac{1}{2}$ 0 0) and k = (0 0 0) and determine the magnetic structures of the zero-field and magnetic field-induced phases for H along the $\mathcal{a}$ and [–110] crystal directions. We determine the experimental magnetic field- temperature (H, T)-phase diagram and reproduce it by Monte Carlo simulations of an effective spin exchange Hamiltonian for one distorted kagome layer. Our model includes a strong axial single-ion anisotropy and significantly smaller exchange couplings, which span up to the third-nearest neighbors within the layer. Single crystal inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements reveal an almost flat, only weakly dispersive mode around 7 meV that we use alongside bulk magnetization data to deduce the crystal-electric field (CEF) scheme for the Tm 3+ ions. Random phase approximation (RPA) calculations based on the determined CEF wave functions of the two lowest quasidoublets enable an estimation of the interlayer coupling that is compatible with the experimental INS spectra. No evidence for low-energy spin waves associated to the magnetic order was found, which is consistent with the strongly Ising nature of the ground state.

Electric-field-tunable band gap in commensurate twisted bilayer graphene

Bernal bilayer graphene exhibits a band gap that is tunable through the infrared with an electric field. In this study, we show that sublattice odd commensurate twisted bilayer graphene (C-TBG) exhibits a band gap that is tunable through the terahertz with an electric field. We show that from the perspective of terahertz optics the sublattice odd and even forms of C-TBG are “inflated” versions of Bernal and AA-stacked bilayer graphene, respectively, with energy scales reduced by a factor of 110 for the 21.79° commensurate unit cell. This lower energy scale is accompanied by a correspondingly smaller gate voltage, which means that the strong-field regime is more easily accessible than in the Bernal case. Finally, we show that the interlayer coherence energy is a directly accessible experimental quantity through the position of a power-law divergence in the optical conductivity.

K 2 Co 2 TeO 6 : A layered magnet with a S = 1 2 Co 2 + honeycomb lattice

Recent observations of Kitaev interactions in d 7 electron configurations have generated research interest in Co 2+ based honeycomb magnets. Here, we report the synthesis of a K 2 Co 2 TeO 6 single crystal. X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy experiments show that K 2 Co 2 TeO 6 crystallizes in a $P$6 3 /$mcm$ space group with undistorted honeycomb layers of Co 2+ ions. Anisotropic magnetic and thermodynamic characterizations demonstrate an effective S = $\frac{1}{2}$ state of Co 2+ at low temperature, competing magnetic phases, and weak magnetic transitions that can be suppressed by applying fields. Moreover, the interlayer K disorder level is tunable by thermal treatments, and it affects the magnetic features obviously. In conclusion, our findings provide a new and promising platform for studying Kitaev physics.

Anomalous bilayer quantum Hall effect

In parallel to the condensed-matter realization of quantum Hall (Chern insulators), quantum spin Hall (topological insulators), and fractional quantum Hall (fractional Chern insulators) effects, we propose that bilayer flat band (FB) lattices with one FB in each layer constitute solid-state analogs of bilayer quantum Hall (BQH) system, leading to anomalous BQH effect without a magnetic field. By exact diagonalization of a bilayer kagome lattice Hamiltonian, as a prototypical example, we demonstrate the stabilization of excitonic condensate Halperin's (1,1,1) state at the total filling v T = 1 of the two FBs. Furthermore, by tuning the interlayer tunneling and distance between the kagome layers at v T = 2/3, we show phase transitions among Halperin's (3,3,0), spin-singlet (1,1,2), and particle-hole conjugate of Laughlin's 1/3 states, as previously observed in conventional BQH systems. Furthermore, our work opens a new direction in the field of FB physics by demonstrating bilayer FB materials as an attractive avenue for realizing exotic anomalous BQH states including non-Abelian anyons.

Electronic structure, magnetic correlations, and superconducting pairing in the reduced Ruddlesden-Popper bilayer La 3 Ni 2 O 6 under pressure: Different role of d 3 z 2 - r 2 orbital compared with La 3 Ni 2 O 7

The recent discovery of superconductivity in bilayer La 3 Ni 2 O 7 (327-LNO) under pressure stimulated much interest in layered nickelates. However, superconductivity was not found in another bilayer nickelate system, La 3 Ni 2 O 6 (326-LNO), even under pressure. To understand the similarities and differences between 326-LNO and 327-LNO, using density functional theory and the random phase approximation (RPA), we systematically investigate 326-LNO under pressure. The large crystal-field splitting between the e g orbitals caused by the missing apical oxygen moves the d 3z 2 -r 2 orbital farther away from the Fermi level, implying that the d 3z 2 -r 2 orbital plays a less important role in 326-LNO than in 327-LNO. This also results in a smaller bandwidth for the d x 2 -y 2 orbital and a reduced energy gap for the bonding-antibonding splitting of the d 3z 2 -r 2 orbital in 326-LNO, as compared to 327-LNO. Moreover, the in-plane hybridization between the d x 2 -y 2 and d 3z 2 -r 2 orbitals is found to be small in 326-LNO, while it is much stronger in 327-LNO. Furthermore, the low-spin ferromagnetic state is found to be the likely ground state in 326-LNO under high pressure. The weak interlayer coupling suggests that s ± -wave pairing is unlikely in 326-LNO. The robust in-plane ferromagnetic coupling also suggests that d-wave superconductivity, which is usually caused by antiferromagnetic fluctuations of the d x 2 -y 2 orbital, is also unlikely in 326-LNO. These conclusions are supported by our many-body RPA calculations of the pairing behavior. Additionally, contrasting with the cuprates, for the bilayer cuprate HgBa 2 CaCu 2 O 6 , we find a strong self-doping effect of the d x 2 -y 2 orbital under pressure, with the charge of Cu being reduced by approximately 0.13 electrons from 0 GPa to 25 GPa. In contrast, we do not observe such a change in the electronic density in 326-LNO under pressure, establishing another important difference between the nickelates and the cuprates.

Electrical control of two-dimensional electron-hole fluids in the quantum Hall regime

We study the influence of quantizing perpendicular magnetic fields on the ground state of a bilayer with electron and hole fluids separated by an opaque tunnel barrier. In the absence of a field, the ground state at low carrier densities is a condensate of s-wave excitons that has spontaneous interlayer phase coherence. We find that a series of phase transitions emerge at strong perpendicular fields between condensed states and incompressible incoherent states with full electron and hole Landau levels. When the electron and hole densities are unequal, condensation can occur in higher angular momentum electron-hole pair states and, at weak fields, break rotational symmetry. Here, we explain how this physics is expressed in dual-gate phase diagrams, and predict transport and capacitively probed thermodynamic signatures that distinguish different states.

Impurity effects on local electronic structure of twisted bilayer cuprates

It has been recently proposed that a fully gapped d-wave superconducting phase emerges in twisted bilayer cuprates when twist angle is in the vicinity of 45°. By considering a twisted bilayer model with a moiré cell, we study the local electronic structure around a single-site impurity and impurity dimer in both topologically trivial and nontrivial superconducting states. Here we find that the topological nontrivial superconducting phase is robust against single scalar-potential impurity scattering but is very sensitive to the interlayer impurity dimer scattering, which avoids and enforces the creation of the subgap quasiparticle state. This behavior is intrinsic to the bilayer structure and topological nature, in contrast to the other types of impurities that inevitably bring subgap quasiparticle states. We expect that our results can contribute to the understanding of electronic properties of twisted bilayer cuprates systems.

Electronic reconstruction in confined SrRuO 3 monolayers

Here, we report the observation of an electronic reconstruction in dimensionally controlled ruthenate heterostructures synthesized by pulsed laser deposition. High structural and electronic quality of superlattices comprised of a single SrRuO 3 layer inter-spaced with varying thicknesses of insulating SrTiO 3 layers was verified by reflection high energy electron diffraction, atomic force microscopy, x-ray diffraction, reciprocal space mapping, and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. X-ray absorption spectroscopy evidences a confinement-driven evolution of the Ru electronic configuration from the 𝑑 5 $\underline{L}$ to the 𝑑 4 state. Significant increases of the spin-orbit coupling are observed in connection with the configuration changes supporting recent works identifying large enhancement of the magnetic anisotropy. The growth of high quality two-dimensional confined ruthenate layers under precisely controlled environments highlights the potential to directly manipulate interlayer coupling and selectively perturb the electronic state in ruthenates in analogy to superconducting Sr 2 ⁢RuO 4 .

High-field magnetic phase diagrams of the 𝑅⁢Mn 6 ⁢Sn 6 (𝑅=Gd–Tm) kagome metals

𝑅⁢Mn 6 ⁢Sn 6 (𝑅=Y, Gd–Lu) kagome metals are promising materials hosting flat electronic bands and Dirac points that interact with magnetism. The coupling between the two magnetic 𝑅 and Mn sublattices can drive complex magnetic states with potential consequences for spin and charge transport and other topological properties. Here, in this work, we use a detailed magnetic Hamiltonian to calculate and predict the magnetic phase diagrams for 𝑅⁢Mn 6 ⁢Sn 6 kagome metals within the mean-field approximation. These calculations reveal a variety of collinear, noncollinear, and noncoplanar phases that arise from competition between various interlayer magnetic exchange interactions and magnetic anisotropies of the 𝑅 and Mn ions. We enumerate these phases and their magnetic space groups for future analysis of their impact on topological and trivial bands near the Fermi surface.

Role of nonmagnetic spacers in the magnetic interactions of antiferromagnetic topological insulators MnBi 4 ⁢Te 7 and MnBi 2 ⁢Te 4

MnBi 4 ⁢Te 7 belongs to a family of antiferromagnetic topological insulators. It forms a natural heterostructure of magnetic (septuple) and nonmagnetic (quintuple) topological blocks. Here, we explore the magnetism and magnetic interactions in this compound using inelastic neutron scattering. We find that the interlayer magnetic coupling is much weaker in MnBi 4 ⁢Te 7 as compared to MnBi 2⁢ Te 4 due to the insertion of nonmagnetic quintuple layers in the former. However, other key magnetic energy scales residing within a single septuple block, the single-ion anisotropy and long-range intralayer exchanges, are essentially the same. In conclusion, this identifies a transferable set of magnetic interactions applicable to the extended family of magnetic topological insulators based on MnBi 2 ⁢Te 4 –Bi 2 ⁢Te 3 heterostructures.

Phonon dynamics in quantum spin liquid and valence bond crystal states in the barlowite family of kagome magnets

The barlowite [Cu 4 ⁢(OD) 6⁢ FBr] family of materials is characterized by antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 kagome layers and are believed to host interesting ground states of quantum magnetism. Substituting the interlayer sites with zinc ions yields Zn-barlowite (Zn 𝑥 ⁢Cu 4−𝑥 ⁢(OD) 6 ⁢FBr, 𝑥 ≈ 0.80) which is a strong candidate to have a quantum spin liquid (QSL) state. Experimentally distinguishing between valence bond crystal (VBC) and QSL states in the absence of magnetic ordering can prove challenging as both states exhibit similar average spin-spin correlations. Using high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering with 1.4 meV energy resolution, we probe acoustic phonons in these structurally similar materials at various temperatures. Our measurements uncover robust differences possibly driven by different spin-phonon physics in VBC and QSL states, particularly at the 𝑀-point Brillouin zone boundary. Over a large 𝑇=[15,200]⁢ K temperature range, where neither material undergoes magnetic ordering nor a structural transition, we observe phonon softening in Zn-barlowite in contrast to a hardening of the same phonon in barlowite. Further, these results indicate that acoustic phonons in the barlowite system can be used to study and possibly distinguish between QSL and disordered VBC states in quantum magnets.
