Executive Summary: Quantifying the benefits to the national economy from secondary applications of NASA technology

Preliminary estimates were prepared of the economic benefits to the U.S. economy from secondary applications of NASA technology. Technology is defined as the body of knowledge concerning how society's resources can be combined to yield economic goods and services, and NASA technology represents NASA's contribution to this body of technical knowledge. Secondary applications refer to uses of NASA generated knowledge for purposes other than those primary mission-oriented ones for which the original R&D was done. Case studies in cryogenics, integrated circuits, gas turbines, and NASTRAN are presented.

Quantifying the benefits to the national economy from secondary applications of NASA technology, executive summary

The feasibility of systematically quantifying the economic benefits of secondary applications of NASA related R and D was investigated. Based upon the tools of economic theory and econometric analysis, a set of empirical methods was developed and selected applications were made to demonstrate their workability. Analyses of the technological developments related to integrated circuits, cryogenic insulation, gas turbines, and computer programs for structural analysis indicated substantial secondary benefits accruing from NASA's R and D in these areas.

Irradiate-anneal screening of total dose effects in semiconductor devices

An extensive investigation of irradiate-anneal (IRAN) screening against total dose radiation effects was carried out as part of a program to harden the Mariner Jupiter/Saturn 1977 (MJS'77) spacecraft to survive the Jupiter radiation belts. The method consists of irradiating semiconductor devices with Cobalt-60 to a suitable total dose under representative bias conditions and of separating the parts in the undesired tail of the distribution from the bulk of the parts by means of a predetermined acceptance limit. The acceptable devices are then restored close to their preirradiation condition by annealing them at an elevated temperature. IRAN was used when lot screen methods were impracticable due to lack of time, and when members of a lot showed a diversity of radiation response. The feasibility of the technique was determined by testing of a number of types of linear bipolar integrated circuits, analog switches, n-channel JFETS and bipolar transistors. Based on the results of these experiments a number of device types were selected for IRAN of flight parts in the MJS'77 spacecraft systems. The part types, screening doses, acceptance criteria, number of parts tested and rejected as well as the program steps are detailed.

Radiation design criteria handbook

Radiation design criteria for electronic parts applications in space environments are provided. The data were compiled from the Mariner/Jupiter Saturn 1977 electronic parts radiation test program. Radiation sensitive device types were exposed to radiation environments compatible with the MJS'77 requirements under suitable bias conditions. A total of 189 integrated circuits, transistors, and other semiconductor device types were tested.

Hardening of MJS77 spacecraft against the Jupiter radiation belts

Results of the device characterization program to identify components of the Mariner Jupiter/Saturn spacecraft in need of radiation hardening to meet a total dose requirement of 5 trillion e/sq cm are presented. The parts to be tested, including bipolar transistors, JFETs, SCRs, CMOS devices, linear integrated circuits, Zener diodes and other radiation-sensitive parts, were identified by a worst case circuit analysis of the 20 major subsystems. The test samples were exposed to several levels of irradiation from a Dynamitron electron accelerator capable of producing a steady stream of electrons at energies up to 2.5 eV. The electrical parameters of the devices were measured immediately following irradiation to prevent annealing. CMOS devices and linear devices showed the most severe degradation in a moderate radiation environment, and significant degradation was produced at low current in bipolar transistors. Three methods used for screening a number of devices determined by circuit and shielding analyses to be unacceptable radiation-sensitive are described: diffusion and metallization lot screening; wafer lot screening; and irradiation-anneal screening.

The revolution in data gathering systems

This paper gives a review of the data-acquisition systems used in NASA's wind tunnels from the 1950's to the present as a basis for assessing the impact of minicomputers and microcomputers on data acquisition and processing. The operation and disadvantages of wind-tunnel data systems are summarized for the period before 1950, the early 1950's, the early and late 1960's, and the early 1970's. Some significant advances discussed include the use or development of solid-state components, minicomputer systems, large central computers, on-line data processing, autoranging DC amplifiers, MOS-FET multiplexers, MSI and LSI logic, computer-controlled programmable amplifiers, solid-state remote multiplexing, integrated circuits, and microprocessors. The distributed system currently in use with the 40-ft by 80-ft wind tunnel at Ames Research Center is described in detail. The expected employment of distributed systems and microprocessors in the next decade is noted.

Redundant Strapdown Laser Gyro Navigation System

For the last several years, NASA has pursued the development of low-cost high-reliability inertial navigation systems that would satisfy a broad spectrum of future space and avionics missions. Two specific programs have culminated in the construction of a Redundant Strapdown Laser Gyro Navigation System. These two programs were for development of a space ultrareliable modular computer (SUMC) and a redundant laser gyro inertial measurement unit (IMU). The SUMC is a digital computer that employs state-of-the-art large-scale integrated circuits configured in a functional modular breakdown. The redundant laser gyro IMU is a six-pack strapdown sensor package in a dodecahedron configuration which uses six laser gyros to provide incremental angular positions and six accelerometers for linear velocity outputs. The sensor arrangement allows automatic accommodation of two failures; a third failure can be tolerated provided it can be determined. The navigation system also includes redundant power supplies, built-in test-equipment (BITE) circuits for failure detection, and software which provides for navigation, redundancy management, and automatic calibration and alignment.

Hardware additions to microprocessor architecture aid software development

An address trap (breakpoint) mechanism and last-in-first-out (LIFO) address stack are suggested as two additions to the basic microprocessor architecture whose functions are solely to aid the programmer. These devices provide the programmer with the ability to specify address breakpoints and to trace program execution back through N instructions, where N is the depth of the stack. Both devices, plus interface logic and buffering, have been designed for an INTEL 8080-based system using approximately 25 integrated-circuit packages.

CCD correlation techniques

Two CCD techniques were discussed for performing an N-point sampled data correlation between an input signal and an electronically programmable reference function. The design and experimental performance of an implementation of the direct time correlator utilizing two analog CCDs and MOS multipliers on a single IC were evaluated. The performance of a CCD implementation of the chirp z transform was described, and the design of a new CCD integrated circuit for performing correlation by multiplication in the frequency domain was presented. This chip provides a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) or inverse DFT, multipliers, and complete support circuitry for the CCD CZT. The two correlation techniques are compared.

A brief description of the Loran-C system is presented with a suggested receiver based on a standard AM-FM integrated circuit chip. Construction details of the Mini-L Loran-C prototype front-end are considered. The Mini-L system was bench tested for approximately 500 hours under a variety of reception conditions. The Mini-L concept combined with a microprocessor system is a promising approach to the development of truly low-cost Loran-C receivers for the marine and airborne user.
