Play Fairway Analysis of the Snake River Plain, Idaho (Final Report)

The Snake River Plain (SRP) volcanic province overlies a thermal anomaly that extends deep into the mantle; it represents one of the highest heat flow provinces in North America. The Yellowstone hotspot continues to feed a magma system that underlies much of southern Idaho and has produced basaltic volcanism as young as 2000 years old. It has been estimated to host up to 855 MW of potential geothermal power production, most of which is associated with the Snake River Plain volcanic province in Idaho, which lies outside the area of Yellowstone National Park (Neely, K.W. and Galinato, G., 2007, Geothermal power generation in Idaho: an overview of current developments and future potential, Open File Report, Idaho Office of Energy Resources).

Fuel/Basket Degradation Modeling Summary

This report documents the activities in a preliminary phase of development for three models: 1) waste package breach model, 2) fuel/basket degradation model, and 3) dual-purpose canister (DPC) crush model. The waste package breach model describes the coupling of mass flow, heat transport, and canister shell deformation in response to a heat-generating (criticality) event. The fuel/basket degradation model describes potential weakening and disaggregation of the DPC structure from corrosion, possibly accelerated by seismic ground motion. Progressively degraded three-dimensional (3D) configurations of the fuel, basket, and shell are generated for future analysis of reactivity (with as-loaded DPC fuel characteristics). Another important application for the fuel/basket degradation model is validation of the two stylized degradation cases currently being used by other investigators for analysis of the as-loaded DPC inventory under disposal conditions. The DPC crush model investigates stability of a typical DPC after breach of the disposal overpack allows fluids from the repository near-field environment to penetrate and externally pressurize the canister shell. Preliminary results show that large deformation of the DPC could occur for external pressure on the order of 10 to 15 MPa, or the shell could be stable (not collapse) with pressure of 20 MPa or greater if the basket plates are fully welded at the connections.

SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego Theory Manual (V.5.2)

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.

Robust Large-Scale Dynamic Windows using Reversible Metal Electrodeposition

This project funded the study and development of dynamic windows based on reversible metal electrodeposition (RME). Dynamic windows allow user control over light and heat flow into and out of buildings, which offer both advantages in building aesthetics (with worker productivity improvement of 2%) and energy efficiency (up to 20% savings) compared to static controls such as low emissivity coatings and blinds/shades. Despite these advantages, dynamic windows, which traditionally rely on electrochromic metal oxides or conductive organic molecules for light modulation have failed to significantly impact the market due to issues related to cost, color, and optical dynamic range. Dynamic windows based on reversible metal electrodeposition (RME) are an exciting alternative approach and have the potential to overcome the issues associated with traditional technologies. A RME dynamic window is an electrochemical cell that modulates light using the reversible electrodeposition of metal on and off a transparent conducting oxide (TCO), which serves as the working electrode. The electrolyte has nearly colorless metal salts dissolved, and application of a cathodic potential on the TCO reduces the metal cations across the TCO surface to their metallic form, making a thin film that is efficient at blocking out light. A reverse in polarity oxidizes the metal, where it dissolves into solution, returning the window back to transparent. The counter electrode typically employed is a metal mesh, which is used to balance the electrochemical reactions happening on the TCO working electrode. These RME dynamic windows have the largest dynamic range (capable of reaching <<0.1% transmission) with color neutral tinting of any existing technology using solution processed techniques, which positions the technology as a promising candidate to penetrate the residential market. We have successfully scaled up the windows from 25 cm2 to 929 cm 2 , and we have demonstrated significant improvements to both the cycle life (10,000 cycles in a 3-electrode half-cell) and shelf life (>1 month) of our windows. We have published our work in high impact journals (6 published and 2 manuscripts in prep), filed 5 patents, and have incorporated TYNT Technologies to commercialize the technology.

Physically rigorous reduced-order flow models of fractured subsurface environments without explosive computational cost

Fractured media models comprise discontinuities of multiple lengths (e.g. fracture lengths and apertures, wellbore area) that fall into the relatively insignificant length scales spanning millimeter-scale fractures to centimeter-scale wellbores in comparison to the extensions of the field of interest, and challenge the conventional discretization methods imposing highly-fine meshing and formidably large numerical cost. By utilizing the recent developments in the finite element analysis of electromagnetics that allow to represent material properties on a hierarchical geometry, this project develops computational capabilities to model fluid flow, heat conduction, transport and induced polarization in large-scale geologic environments that possess geometrically-complex fractures and man-made infrastructures without explosive computational cost. The computational efficiency and robustness of this multi-physics modeling tool are demonstrated by considering various highly-realistic complex geologic environments that are common in many energy and national security related engineering problems.

Modeling the cooldown of cryocooler conduction-cooled devices

Cryocooler conduction cooled devices can experience significant cooldown time due to lower available cooling capacity compares to convection cooled devices. Therefore, the cooldown time is an important design parameter for conduction cooled devices. This article introduces a framework developed in Python for calculating the cooldown profiles and cooldown time of cryocooler conduction-cooled devices such as superconducting magnets and accelerator cavities. The cooldown time estimation problem is essentially a system of ordinary first-order differential equations comprising the material properties (temperature dependent thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity) of the components intertwined with the prevailing heat transfer channels (conduction, radiation, and heat flow across pressed contacts) and the cryocooler capacity. The formulation of this ODE system is first presented. This ODE system is then solved using the in-built Python library odeint. A case study is presented comprising a small cryocooler conduction-cooled copper stabilized niobium-titanium magnet. The case study is supplemented with the Python script enabling the reader to simply tweak the device design parameters and optimize the design from the point of view of slow/fast cooldown.
