A review of the economic implications of the National Academy of Engineering 1974 study of the potential application of space systems

User benefits resulting from the application of space systems to previously described application areas were identified, and methods to assign priorities to application areas and to quantify the benefits were described. The following areas were selected for in-depth review: communications, materials processing in space, weather and climate, and institutional arrangements for space applications. Recommendations concerning studies that should be undertaken to develop a more precise understanding of the source and magnitude of the realizable economic benefits were also presented.

SEASAT economic assessment. Volume 3: Offshore oil and natural gas industry case study and generalization

The economic benefits of improved ocean condition, weather and ice forecasts by SEASAT satellites to the exploration, development and production of oil and natural gas in the offshore regions are considered. The results of case studies which investigate the effects of forecast accuracy on offshore operations in the North Sea, the Celtic Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico are reported. A methodology for generalizing the results to other geographic regions of offshore oil and natural gas exploration and development is described.

SEASAT economic assessment. Volume 4: Ocean mining case study and generalization

The results of a study of the weather sensitive features of near shore and deep water ocean mining industries are described. Problems with the evaluation of economic benefits for the deep water ocean mining industry are attributed to the relative immaturity and highly proprietary nature of the industry. Case studies on the gold industry, diamond industry, tin industry and sand and gravel industry are cited.

SEASAT economic assessment. Volume 9: Ports and harbors case study and generalization

This case study and generalization quantify benefits made possible through improved weather forecasting resulting from the integration of SEASAT data into local weather forecasts. The major source of avoidable economic losses to shipping from inadequate weather forecasting data is shown to be dependent on local precipitation forecasting. The ports of Philadelphia and Boston were selected for study.

Development of a solar-powered residential air conditioner: Economic analysis

The results of investigations aimed at the development of cost models to be used in the economic assessment of Rankine-powered air conditioning systems for residential application are summarized. The rationale used in the development of the cost model was to: (1) collect cost data on complete systems and on the major equipment used in these systems; (2) reduce these data and establish relationships between cost and other engineering parameters such as weight, size, power level, etc; and (3) derive simple correlations from which cost-to-the-user can be calculated from performance requirements. The equipment considered in the survey included heat exchangers, fans, motors, and turbocompressors. This kind of hardware represents more than 2/3 of the total cost of conventional air conditioners.

The economics of satellite maintenance

The primary goal of the space transportation system - to reduce the cost of space programs while satisfying their mission requirements - can be enhanced by the proper choice of a satellite-maintenance concept. This paper develops the life-cycle costs of performing an automated satellite program during the shuttle era in three competitive modes: expendable, ground-refurbishable, and in-orbit maintainable. In-orbit maintenance is shown to be the most economic maintenance mode for both low- and high-earth orbits.

Efficiency and economics of large scale hydrogen liquefaction

Liquid hydrogen is being considered as a substitute for conventional hydrocarbon-based fuels for future generations of commercial jet aircraft. Its acceptance will depend, in part, upon the technology and cost of liquefaction. The process and economic requirements for providing a sufficient quantity of liquid hydrogen to service a major airport are described. The design is supported by thermodynamic studies which determine the effect of process arrangement and operating parameters on the process efficiency and work of liquefaction.

Design, economic and system considerations of large wind-driven generators

The increased search for alternative energy sources has lead to renewed interest and studies of large wind-driven generators. This paper presents the results and considerations of such an investigation. The paper emphasizes the concept selection of wind-driven generators, system optimization, control system design, safety aspects, economic viability on electric utility systems and potential electric system interfacing problems.

Initial technical environmental, and economic evaluation of space solar power concepts. Volume 2: Detailed report

The SPS concepts which appear to be technically feasible are discussed in terms of the economic viability and competitive costs with other energy sources. The concepts discussed include: power station, microwave reception and conversion, space construction and maintenance, space transportation, and program costs and analysis. The conclusions presented include: (1) The maximum output of an individual microwave transmission link to earth is about 5 GW. (2) The mass of 10 GW SPS is between 47,000,000 and 124,000,00 kg. (3) The silicon solar cell arrays make up well over half the weight and cost of the satellite. (4) The SPS in equatorial orbit will be eclipsed by the earth and by other satellites.

An advanced concept that promises ecological and economic viability

The actuality of supersonic commercial service being provided by Concorde is demonstrating to the world the advantages offered by supersonic travel for both business and recreation. Public acceptance will gradually and persistently stimulate interest to proceed with a second generation design that meets updated economic and ecological standards. It is estimated that this concept could operate profitably on world-wide routes with a revenue structure based upon economy fares. Airplanes will meet all present day ecological requirements regarding noise and emissions.

Economic analysis of standard interface modules for use with the multi-mission spacecraft, volume 1

A preliminary technical and economic feasibility study was made of the use of Standardized Interstate Modules (SIM) to perform electual interfacing functions that were historically incorporated into sensors. Sensor interface functions that are capable of standardization from the set of missions planned for the NASA Multi-Mission Spacecraft (MMS) in the 1981 to 1985 time period were identified. The cost savings that could be achieved through the replacement of nonstandard sensor interface flight hardware that might be used in these missions with SIM were examined.

Economic analysis of standard interface modules for use with the multi-mission spacecraft. Volume 2: Appendices and drawings

The cost savings that could be obtained by the use of SIM to perform certain sensor electrical interfacing functions that were historically an integral part of the sensor are evaluated. Reduction in both the nonrecurring and recurring costs of this sensor interface hardware could be achieved through the use of SIM, and the study concludes that the development and use of certain power conditioning and data handling SIM units are economically justified.

Economic Benefits of Improved Information on Worldwide Crop Production: An Optimal Decision Model of Production and Distribution with Application to Wheat, Corn, and Soybeans

An optimal decision model of crop production, trade, and storage was developed for use in estimating the economic consequences of improved forecasts and estimates of worldwide crop production. The model extends earlier distribution benefits models to include production effects as well. Application to improved information systems meeting the goals set in the large area crop inventory experiment (LACIE) indicates annual benefits to the United States of $200 to $250 million for wheat, $50 to $100 million for corn, and $6 to $11 million for soybeans, using conservative assumptions on expected LANDSAT system performance.

A study of commuter airline economics

Variables are defined and cost relationships developed that describe the direct and indirect operating costs of commuter airlines. The study focused on costs for new aircraft and new aircraft technology when applied to the commuter airline industry. With proper judgement and selection of input variables, the operating costs model was shown to be capable of providing economic insight into other commuter airline system evaluations.
