Gas core reactors for actinide transmutation and breeder applications

This work consists of design power plant studies for four types of reactor systems: uranium plasma core breeder, uranium plasma core actinide transmuter, UF6 breeder and UF6 actinide transmuter. The plasma core systems can be coupled to MHD generators to obtain high efficiency electrical power generation. A 1074 MWt UF6 breeder reactor was designed with a breeding ratio of 1.002 to guard against diversion of fuel. Using molten salt technology and a superheated steam cycle, an efficiency of 39.2% was obtained for the plant and the U233 inventory in the core and heat exchangers was limited to 105 Kg. It was found that the UF6 reactor can produce high fluxes (10 to the 14th power n/sq cm-sec) necessary for efficient burnup of actinide. However, the buildup of fissile isotopes posed severe heat transfer problems. Therefore, the flux in the actinide region must be decreased with time. Consequently, only beginning-of-life conditions were considered for the power plant design. A 577 MWt UF6 actinide transmutation reactor power plant was designed to operate with 39.3% efficiency and 102 Kg of U233 in the core and heat exchanger for beginning-of-life conditions.

ADRF experiments using near n.pi pulse strings

Adiabatic demagnetization (ADRF) can be achieved in a dipolar coupled nuclear spin system in solids by applying a string of short RF pulses and gradually modulating the pulse amplitudes or pulse angles. This letter reports an adiabatic inverse polarization effect in solids and a rotary spin echo phenomenon observed in liquids when the pulse angle is gradually changed across integral multiples of pi during a string of RF pulses. The RF pulse sequence used is illustrated along with the NMR signal from a CaF2 single crystal as observed between the RF pulses and the rotary spin echo signal observed in liquid C6F6 for n = 2. The observed effects are explained qualitatively on the basis of average Hamiltonian theory.

A pilot's assessment of helicopter handling-quality factors common to both agility and instrument flying tasks

Results from a series of simulation and flight investigations undertaken to evaluate helicopter flying qualities and the effects of control system augmentation for nap-of-the-earth (NOE) agility and instrument flying tasks were analyzed to assess handling-quality factors common to both tasks. Precise attitude control was determined to be a key requirement for successful accomplishment of both tasks. Factors that degraded attitude controllability were improper levels of control sensitivity and damping and rotor-system cross-coupling due to helicopter angular rate and collective pitch input. Application of rate-command, attitude-command, and control-input decouple augmentation schemes enhanced attitude control and significantly improved handling qualities for both tasks. NOE agility and instrument flying handling-quality considerations, pilot rating philosophy, and supplemental flight evaluations are also discussed.

Interpretation of solar extinction data for stratospheric aerosols

This paper discusses the inversion problem for aerosols using the solar extinction method. A series of numerical experiments is described in which solar extinction measurement systems are modeled. A numerical model of a solar extinction measurement system has been coupled with model atmospheres that exhibit fine scale structures to produce numerically generated data signals. These signals were then inverted to study the effect that measurement errors and desired vertical resolution produce in the inverted results. Knowledge o2 the trade off between vertical resolution and the accuracy of inversion aid in the interpretation of the inverted results.

Effects of internal heat transfer on the structure of self-similar blast waves

An analysis of the problem of self-similar, nonadiabatic blast waves, where both conduction and radiation are allowed to take place, show the problem to be reducible to the integration of a system of six coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Consideration of these equations shows that although radiation tends to produce uniform fields through temperature gradient attenuation, all the energy carried by radiation is deposited on the front and the bounding shock becomes increasingly overdriven. When conduction is taken into account, the distribution of gasdynamic parameters in blast waves in the case of Rosseland diffusion radiation is more uniform than in the case of the Planck emission radiation.

Electrical power generating system

A power generating system for adjusting coupling an induction motor, as a generator, to an A.C. power line wherein the motor and power line are connected through a triac is described. The triac is regulated to normally turn on at a relatively late point in each half cycle of its operation, whereby at less than operating speed, and thus when the induction motor functions as a motor rather than as a generator, power consumption from the line is substantially reduced.

Wedge coupling of lasers into multimode fibers

Design and experimental data for obtuse-angled wedges used in coupled configurations of diode lasers and multimode fibers are presented. An analytic definition of the connection between the wedge angle and the fiber acceptance half-angle is developed, along with a formula for the minimum half-angle. An inequality is defined for determining the bevel angle of the output end of the fiber to eliminate end reflections. The fiber parameters are accounted for in the bevel. The formulations were tested in comparison with the performance of a coupled CDH laser system and good agreement was found in the output spectrum.

Transonic analysis of canted winglets

A computational method developed to provide a transonic analysis for upper/lower surface wing-tip mounted winglets is described. Winglets with arbitrary planform, cant and toe angle, and airfoil section can be modeled. The embedded grid approach provides high flow field resolution and the required geometric flexibility. In particular, coupled Cartesian/cylindrical grid systems are used to model the complex geometry presented by canted upper/lower surface winglets. A new rotated difference scheme is introduced in order to maintain the stability of the small-disturbance formulation in the presence of large spanwise velocities. Wing and winglet viscous effects are modeled using a two-dimensional 'strip' boundary layer analysis. Correlations with wind tunnel and flight test data for three transport configurations are included.

Application of the SWINT code to wing/body/tail geometries

Pressure and force calculations from the SWINT Euler code are presented and analyzed for a variety of configurations ranging from simple axisymmetric bodies to complex bodies with wings, tails, and inlets at speeds covering the supersonic Mach number range. The SWINT results are compared with both experimental data and with results from simpler computational methods to assess the increased accuracy from the Euler solution. It is shown that SWINT gives excellent results on axisymmetric bodies for attached flow; however, a better method of simulating the separation process on such bodies is needed for increased leeside accuracy. Good leeside accuracy, however, is found on a 3 to 1 elliptical body. It is shown that SWINT gives realistic downstream interference effects, resulting in good predictions of the overall aerodynamics for complex wing-body-tail geometries. The QUICK-geometry system has been coupled with SWINT code to provide a simplified geometry definition procedure for complex bodies. The QUICK method is shown to be a preferable alternative to the current method of inserting the body description directly into the code by FORTRAN statements.

Calculation of resolution for a windowless charge coupled device (CCD)-Digicon

A new version of an intensified charge-coupled device (ICCD) system, which is based on the incorporation of a CsI mesh photocathode and a thinned backside-illuminated CCD into a Space Telescope design Digicon tube, is being developed for future use in space-based observations in the Extreme Ultraviolet waveband. In this paper, a report is presented of the results of computer simulations involving the effects of the non-uniform electrostatic field near the mesh photocathode on imaging properties (especially, the spread function and modulation transfer function) of the detector system. The results are of importance in the design of the front end of the tube and the selection of optimum tube operating conditions. The overall resolution characteristics of the tube, including the effects of the mesh, the electron optics of the region between the mesh photocathode and the CCD target, and the structure of the CCD itself, are estimated.

The quasi-biennial oscillation of ozone in the tropical middle stratosphere - A one-dimensional model

A one-dimensional model of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) of ozone in the tropical middle stratosphere is derived based on assumed (observed) zonal wind QBO in a coupled dynamic, radiative/photochemical system. It is found that the derived vertical variation of the ozone QBO amplitude has two maxima, one at 32 km and the other at 22 km, and a minimum at 28 km. These are in qualitative agreement with observations. In the height interval 30-35 km, the ozone QBO is closely related to temperature dependent photochemistry, and the ozone and temperature variations are out of phase. Below 28 km, where vertical ozone and thermal transports are important, ozone and temperature oscillations are in phase, but both are approximately 270 deg out of phase with the vertical wind variation.

Detection of X-ray emission from the young low-mass star Rossiter 137B

Rst 137B, a close M-dwarf companion to the active K-star HD 36705, has been detected in a High Resolution Image in the Einstein Observatory Archive. The X-ray surface fluxes (0.2-4 keV) from both stars are close to the empirical saturation level, F(x)/F(bol) of about 0.001, defined by rapid rotators and very young stars. This supports the earlier results of the youthfulness of the system. This young couple is an excellent subject for studies of dependence of early evolution on stellar mass. Rst 137B is one of the latest spectral types and thus lowest-mass premain-sequence stars yet detected as an X-ray source.

Rotordynamic analysis of a bearing tester

The properties of the solutions of a system of four coupled nonlinear differential equations that model the behavior of the rotating shaft of a bearing tester are studied. In particular, it is shown how the bounds for the rotations of these equations can be obtained from bounds for the solutions of the linearized equations. By studying the behavior of the Fourier transforms of the solution, the approach to the stability boundary can also be predicted. These conclusions are verified by means of numerical solutions of the equations, and of power spectrum density (PSD) plots.

Recoverable distributed shared virtual memory

The problem of rollback recovery in distributed shared virtual environments, in which the shared memory is implemented in software in a loosely coupled distributed multicomputer system, is examined. A user-transparent checkpointing recovery scheme and a new twin-page disk storage management technique are presented for implementing recoverable distributed shared virtual memory. The checkpointing scheme can be integrated with the memory coherence protocol for managing the shared virtual memory. The twin-page disk design allows checkpointing to proceed in an incremental fashion without an explicit undo at the time of recovery. The recoverable distributed shared virtual memory allows the system to restart computation from a checkpoint without a global restart.

Task reports on developing techniques for scattering by 3D composite structures and to generate new solutions in diffraction theory using higher order boundary conditions

There are two tasks described in this report. First, an extension of a two dimensional formulation is presented for a three dimensional body of revolution. With the introduction of a Fourier expansion of the vector electric and magnetic fields, a coupled two dimensional system is generated and solved via the finite element method. An exact boundary condition is employed to terminate the mesh and the fast fourier transformation is used to evaluate the boundary integrals for low O(n) memory demand when an iterative solution algorithm is used. Second, the diffraction by a material discontinuity in a thick dielectric/ferrite layer is considered by modeling the layer as a distributed current sheet obeying generalized sheet transition conditions (GSTC's).
