Skylab checkout operations

The Skylab Program at Kennedy Space Center presented many opportunities for interesting and profound test and checkout experience. It also offered a compilation of challenges and promises for the Center and for the contractors responsible for the various modules making up Skylab. It is very probable that the various contractors had common experiences during the module and combined systems tests, but this paper will discuss those experiences from the viewpoint of the Multiple Docking Adapter contractor. The experience will consider personnel, procedures, and hardware.

Thermodynamic and transport properties of cryogenic propellants and related fluids

Significant advances have been made in recent years in the quality and range of thermophysical data for the cryogenic propellants, pressurants, and inertants. A review of recently completed and current data compilation projects for helium, hydrogen, argon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, and methane is given together with recommended references for thermodynamic and transport property data tables for these fluids. Modern techniques in the plotting of thermodynamic charts from tabular data (or from functions such as the equation of state) have greatly improved their precision and value. A list of such charts is included.

Antiphase domains in lunar plagioclase

The paper is a compilation of data on antiphase domains in lunar plagioclase. New observations and reports in the literature are tabulated and discussed. In the pattern which emerges (but is still very incomplete), it appears that b-domains, which except for the An 82 bytownite from the Stillwater complex have only been observed in lunar feldspars, occur in the anorthite range An 80 to 95. Especially in the sodium rich part there seems to be a close relation between an exsolution structure and b-APB's. The c-APB's are found in anorthites An 95 to 100 and for a given An-content they are larger for metamorphic than for volcanic anorthites. Near An 95, c- and b-domains can be observed in the same crystal. The c-domains disappear when heated above 1200 C; they are not affected by heating below 600 C. This implies that calcic anorthite without c-domains must have been rapidly quenched from high temperatures.

Polarizations of asteroids and satellites

Polarization data for Mercury, the moon, asteroids, and satellites of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn are compiled along with the relevant laboratory results. It is shown that the slope of the ascending branch of the polarization-phase curve is a discriminant of the bulk albedo only, while the maximum polarization and the depth of the negative branch are sensitive also to the microscale roughness and opacity. Recently published data are used for new calibrations of the laws relating these polarimetric parameters to geometric albedo. It is demonstrated that the albedos of asteroids and small satellites derived from their polarization properties are in good agreement with infrared diameters, and that a microscopically intricate surface is characteristic of atmosphereless solar-system bodies.

The solar abundance of germanium

Spectral scans of the wavelength regions around 3039 A and 3269 A were used as a basis for the determination of the solar abundance of germanium. A solar model similar to the one given by Elste (1968) was used in the analysis of the data. The germanium abundance values obtained are presented in a table. Taking into account an abundance compilation for the solar system conducted by Cameron (1973), it is concluded that the 'solar system' and solar atmospheric abundances of germanium are in accord.

Statistical analysis of catalogs of extragalactic objects. III - The Shane-Wirtanen and Zwicky catalogs

Statistical investigation of clustering in the galaxy catalogs compiled by Zwicki et al. (1961-1968) and Shane and Wirtanen (1967). The covariance and power spectrum of the angular distributions are estimated. The space region surveyed in the Zwicki catalog is found to represent a 'fair sample of the universe' in that the statistical nature of the clustering in this catalog is found to be mirrored at smaller angular scales in the deeper survey of Shane and Wirtanen.

Notes on Space Technology

These notes are part of a space technology course given at the Flight Research Division of the NACA Langley Aeronautical Laboratory during the early part of 1958. The course was conducted as a self-education program within the Flight Research Division and the various Sections of the notes were prepared for the most part by members of the Division; however, four of the seventeen Sections were prepared by personnel from the Pilotless Aircraft Research Division and the Compressibility Research Division who were very helpful in making the program more complete. The notes have been compiled on a brief time schedule and it will be apparent to the reader that the present version is incomplete and to some extent may lack uniformity in length, type of presentation, and technical detail in the various Sections. Nevertheless, there has been a demand for the notes from those who have seen them, and it is thought that they might serve a useful purpose if they were made available on a wider basis. It is believed that for the sake of expediency this goal is best achieved by making the material available now in its present unedited form instead of following the usual NACA editing procedures.

A study of lagoonal and estuarine processes in the area of Merritt Island encompassing the space center

A study was conducted to determine the marine biology and dynamic oceanographic properties of the Indian River in Florida. One of the major areas of concentration involved the compilation of a taxonomic list of marine animals in the river. An important conclusion of the study is that diversity of the benthic community is substantially higher than expected. The effect of major climatic factors on the diversity and structure of the benthic community is analyzed.

A communication link between the GIM data base and a general application program

Utilizing the extract verb of GIM causes the requested information to be extracted from the GIM base and written on to tape. When the GIM extract has completed, a FORTRAN program is then compiled and executed. This program reads the tape generated by GIM, formats and prints the extracted data on the line printer. When an end of file on the extracted tape is encountered the job is terminated.

Is Jupiter's magnetosphere like a pulsar's or earth's?

The application of pulsar physics to determine the magnetic structure in the planet Jupiter outer magnetosphere is discussed. A variety of theoretical models are developed to illuminate broad areas of consistency and conflict between theory and experiment. Two possible models of Jupiter's magnetosphere, a pulsar-like radial outflow model and an earth-like convection model, are examined. A compilation of the simple order of magnitude estimates derivable from the various models is provided.

Global small-scale lunar cartography

The primary sources information for compiling this map were the photographs of the visible hemisphere obtained by earth-based observatories, the Luna 3 and Zond 3 pictures, and a small number of Lunar Orbiter pictures. The primary content of the complete lunar map is the surface relief and its tonal characteristics. In preparing the map, particular attention was devoted to the variety of lunar relief forms. The color spectrum of the map was selected not only for the natural coloring of the lunar surface, but also with the objective of achieving maximum expressiveness. A lunar globe to scale 1:10 million was prepared along with the preparation of the map. The scale of the globe, half that of the map, led to some selection and generalization of the relief forms. The globe permits maintaining simultaneously geometric similarity of contours, exact proportions of areas, and identical scales in all directions. The globe was prepared in both the Latin and Russian languages.

Identification characteristics of certain lunar relief forms on pictures obtained from spacecraft

This investigation was restricted to the determination of recognitional characteristics of a single type of relief form, dimple craters on the surface of maria. These craters were arbitrarily considered as closed, negative relief forms, circular in plan-view, and symmetric relative to the center. Two techniques were used to determine the shadow configuration in the craters: (1) experimental determination of the shadow edge by illuminating the models of different profile shapes with a parallel light beam; and (2) geometric construction of the shadow edge using a vertical section of the formation in the direction of the solar rays. A morphological map of the surface which includes the following factors can be compiled using the proposed identification technique: crater profile nature, crater diameter, ratio of diameter and depth, sharpness of the lip, and distribution density of the forms.

Refinement of the Goloseyev catalog point coordinates in the limb zone and determination of point coordinates on the back side of the moon

Lunar photography from Zond 6 showed half the side of the moon which is not visible from the earth, and this made it possible to construct a photogrammetric grid encompassing the entire Western Hemisphere and referenced to points of the visible side, whose coordinates were taken from the Goloseyev catalog. The problem was solved using two pictures taken from approximately 9000 km above the lunar surface. The photogrammetric grid was constructed by joint statistical analysis of the measurements of both pictures and the selenographic coordinates of the catalog points. A special algorithm was developed and a program compiled realizing the maximum likelihood method which permitted working with up to 120 catalog points simultaneously.

Radiative property data for Venusian entry: A compendium

A compilation of experimental and calculated data on the radiative properties of species important in Venusian entry is presented. Molecular band systems, atomic lines, free-bound continua, and free-free continua are considered for the principal radiating species of shock-heated carbon dioxide. Data pertinent to the species in the ablation layer are included. The Venus atmosphere so closely approximates pure carbon dioxide (CO2) that the inviscid layer radiation is due almost entirely to thermally excited CO2. Data are included on the violet band system of the cyanogen radical CN. Recommendations are made as to best property values for radiative heating calculations. A review of the basic equations and the relationships of the various emission-absorption gas properties is included.

Transportation vehicle energy intensities. A joint DOT/NASA reference paper

A compilation of data on the energy consumption of air and ground vehicles is presented. The ratio BTU/ASM, British Thermal Units/Available Seat Mile, is used to express vehicle energy intensiveness, and related to the energy consumed directly in producing seat-mile or ton-mile productivity. Data is presented on passenger and freight vehicles which are in current use or which are about to enter service, and advanced vehicles which may be operational in the 1980's and beyond. For the advanced vehicles, an estimate is given of the date of initial operational service, and the performance characteristics. Other key considerations in interpreting energy intensiveness for a given mode are discussed, such as: load factors, operations, overhead energy consumption, and energy investments in new structure and equipment.
