Analyses and tests for design of an electro-impulse de-icing system

De-icing of aircraft by using the electro-magnetic impulse phenomenon was proposed and demonstrated in several European countries. However, it is not available as a developed system due to lack of research on the basic physical mechanisms and necessary design parameters. The de-icing is accomplished by rapidly discharging high voltage capacitors into a wire coil rigidly supported just inside the aircraft skin. Induced eddy currents in the skin create a repulsive force resulting in a hammer-like force which cracks, de-bonds, and expels ice on the skin surface. The promised advantages are very low energy, high reliability of de-icing, and low maintenance. Three years of Electo-Impulse De-icing (EIDI) research is summarized and the analytical studies and results of testing done in the laboratory, in the NASA Icing Research Tunnel, and in flight are presented. If properly designed, EIDI was demonstrated to be an effective and practical ice protection system for small aircraft, turbojet engine inlets, elements of transport aircraft, and shows promise for use on helicopter rotor blades. Included are practical techniques of fabrication of impulse coils and their mountings. The use of EIDI with nonmetallic surface materials is also described.

Concentrating Trace Gases at Low Pressures

Open adsorption tube enables measurement of gases at parts-per-trillion-by-volume concentrations. Traps trace materials in flowing gas. Variety of configurations possible; tube consists of single long coil instead of several short ones, and tube is made of materials other than stainless steel. Partial immersion of coil in cryogen results in 100 percent trapping rather than typical 85 percent for total immersion.

The development of a containment vessel and Dewar for the particle astrophysics magnet facility (ASTROMAG)

The ASTROMAG facility is the heart of a large charged particle detection and resolution system. ASTROMAG utilizes a superconducting magnet consisting of a large superconducting magnet coil with a stored magnetic energy of approximately 15 MJ. The active coil will have a mass of 1200 kg. This magnet will be cooled by a cryostat using a liquid helium Dewar for storage. The cryostat will have a series of gas-cooled shields with an external guard vacuum shield and an internal Dewar. The magnet and cryostat will be designed for shuttle or Delta launch and will be designed to withstand the internal pressure of expanded helium under full quench conditions when venting is prevented. The external guard vacuum shell is required to maintain a vacuum for Earth based testing and for cold launch of the cryostat and magnet. The magnet is designed to operate at 4.4 K with a peak field of 7.0 tesla. The superconducting material within the magnet is niobium titanium in a conductive matrix.

Digital control system for space structure dampers

A digital controller was developed using an SKD-51 System Design Kit, which incorporates an 8031 microcontroller. The necessary interfaces were installed in the wire wrap area of the SKD-51 and a pulse width modulator was developed to drive the coil of the actuator. Also, control equations were developed, using floating-point arithmetic. The design of the digital control system is emphasized, and it is shown that, provided certain rules are followed, an adequate design can be achieved. It is recommended that the so-called w-plane design method be used, and that the time elapsed before output of the up-dated coil-force signal be kept as small as possible. However, the cycle time for the controller should be watched carefully, because very small values for this time can lead to digital noise.

Repulsive force support system feasibility study

A new concept in magnetic levitation and control is introduced for levitation above a plane. A set of five vertical solenoid magnets mounted flush below the plane supports and controls the model in five degrees of freedom. The compact system of levitation coils is contained in a space 2.4 m (96 in) diameter by 1 m (40 in) deep with the top of the levitation system 0.9 m (36 in) below the center line of the suspended model. The levitated model has a permanent magnet core held in position by the five parallel superconductive solenoids symmetrically located in a circle. The control and positioning system continuously corrects for model position in five dimensions using computer current pulses superimposed on the levitation coil base currents. The conceptual designs include: superconductive and Nd-Fe-B permanent magnet model cores and levitation solenoids of either superconductive, cryoresistive, or room temperature windings.

On the glitches in the force transmitted by an electrodynamic exciter to a structure

Around resonance, the force transmitted by an exciter into a structure will be smaller or greater than a reference force generated by its coils due to electromechanical interaction. A simple analysis is presented which reveals how this phenomenon of force drop-off is controlled by three factors. The first factor, called Armature Mass Factor, describes a purely mechanical interaction between the structure and the exciter. The electromechanical energy conversion and its interaction with the structure yields two additional factors, called Electrical Resistance and Electrical Inductance Factors. They describe the effects of coil resistance, inductance and magnetic field strength relative to structural damping and stiffness. Present analysis indicates that, under proper circumstances, more than 90 percent of the force drop-off can be eliminated if armature-to-structure mass ratio is smaller or equal to half of modal loss factor.

Ultra-Stable Superconducting-Maser Oscillator

Unprecedented stability of frequency in superconducting, triple-cavity ruby maser oscillator achieved by incorporation of amplitude-control subsystem. New design enhances ultra-stable measurements of time by reducing fluctuations to 2 X 10 to negative 19th power routinely, and to as little as 10 to negative 20th power in exceptional cases. Currents induced in superconducting pickup coil by changes in magnetic field in ruby. Currents from coil fed to superconducting quantum-interference device (SQUID) magnetometer, output used to generate control signal for electronically variable attenuator. Attenuator varies pump-signal amplitude in response to magnetic-field fluctuations in ruby. Very high feedback-loop gain used for sensitivity of control and adequate compensation of fluctuations.

The design of a multimegawatt heat pipe radiator for an inertial fusion rocket powered manned Mars mission

A system of heat pipe radiators has been designed to provide waste heat rejection for an inertial fusion powered spacecraft capable of manned missions to other planets. The radiators are arrays of unfinned, arterial heat pipes operating at 1500 and 900 K. Liquid metal coolant carries up to 8000 MW of waste heat through feed pipes from on-board components (laser drivers and coil shield). The radiators do not rely on armor for protection from micrometeoroid penetration. An armored radiator design for this application with a 99 percent survivability would have a specific mass of 0.06 to 0.11 kg/kW at 1500 K. Instead, a segmentation of heat pipes is used, and bumpers are utilized to protect the feed pipes. This design reduces the specific mass to 0.015 to 0.04 kg/kW for the coil shield radiator (1500 K) and 0.06 to 0.12 kg/kW for the laser driver radiator (900 K).

Nonintrusive method and apparatus for monitoring the cure of polymeric materials

The invention is a nonintrusive method of monitoring the cure of a polymeric material using an electromagnetic field to sense a change of resistance of the polymeric material in the electromagnetic field that occurs during curing. This change of resistance is used to vary the impedance of an alternating voltage power supply that produces the electromagnetic field and which change of impedance is measured periodically or continuously to monitor the cure of said polymeric material. The apparatus for practicing the method of this invention may include a nonintrusive sensing head providing an inner, electromagnetic core within an open ended outer pot formed of magnet material. The open end of the pot core is positioned from a selected area of the surface of a sheet of the polymeric material. An alternating voltage supply circuit includes an inductance coil around the electromagnetic core and capacitor connected in parallel with the inductance coil forms a resonant tank circuit when energized. The resulting change in resistance of the polymeric material opposite the open end, a function of the curing, is measured as a corresponding change in the impedance of the power supply circuit to thereby monitor the cure of the polymeric material in the selected area.

TEMPUS: A facility for containerless electromagnetic processing onboard spacelab

The electromagnetic containerless processing facility TEMPUS was recently assigned for a flight on the IML-2 mission. In comparison to the TEMPUS facility already flown on a sounding rocket, several improvements had to be implemented. These are in particular related to: safety; resource management; and the possibility to process different samples with different requirements in one mission. The basic design of this facility as well as the expected processing capabilities are presented. Two operational aspects turned out to strongly influence the facility design: control of the sample motion (first experimental results indicate that crew or ground interaction will be necessary to minimize residual sample motions during processing); and exchange of RF-coils (during processing in vacuum, evaporated sample materials will condense at the cold surface and may force a coil exchange, when a critical thickness is exceeded).

Characteristics of Winter Lightning Currents Struck an Isolated Tower

To make clear the characteristics of winter lightning flashes, the current waveforms of winter lightning flashes were measured by two resistive shunts which were connected to two lighting rods since the winter of 1981, and another measurement has started using a set of five Rogowsky type coils since the winter of 1982. They were recorded by computer controlled digital recording systems. Up to date, 145 current waveforms of the winter lightning flashes, which have the current amplitude over 1 kA, were obtained by the shunt systems and/or the coils system. They show that winter lightning flashes often have a very long duration or continuing current and sometimes have a very large amplitude over 200 kA in positive flashes. For example, the current parameters that were measured on 9 Jan. 1987 were the maximum current amplitude, +280 kA, maximum current derivative 1.0 x 10(exp 10) A/s, total charge +400 C, and action integral 1.5 x 10(exp 7)(sq. A)(s). The statistical evaluation shows that medium peak values of winter lightning flashes (50 percent values) were about 5 kA for negative and 10 kA for positive, and 5 percent values were about 30 kA for negative and 170 kA for positive. The winter lightning current waveforms are classified into three types: single stroke flashes, monopolar multistroke flashes, and bipolar flashes. Moreover, each flash is subdivided into positive or negative, single peak or multipeak, and with or without continuing current.

Improved operation of magnetic bearings for flywheel energy storage system

Analysis and operation of prototype 500-Wh flywheel at low speeds have shown that many factors affect the correct functioning of the magnetic bearings. An examination is made of a number of these, including magnetic bearing control system nonlinearities and displacement transducer positioning, and their effects upon the successful operation of the suspension system. It is observed that the bearing control system is extremely sensitive to actuator parameters such as coil inductance. As a consequence of the analysis of bearing relaxation oscillations, the bearing actuator design methodology which has previously been used, where coil parameter selection is based upon static considerations, has been revised. Displacement transducer sensors which overcome the collocation problem are discussed.

Stabilised electromagnetic levitation at 2-13 MHz

SEL, the Stabilised Electromagnetic Levitator, has been developed to exploit the unique design opportunities available in containerless microgravity experiments. Efficiency and versatility are obtained with multiple coils driven by individual broadband amplifiers whose phase and frequency are controlled. The heating and positioning fields are decoupled. Specimen translation, spin, and for liquids, shape may be adjusted. An open coil structure provides access for optical and diagnostic probes. Results of experiments with a prototype device are discussed. Levitating and heating materials on earth were demonstrated at frequencies up to 13 MHz.

Screw-Thread Inserts As Temporary Flow Restrictors

Coil-spring screw-thread inserts found useful as temporary flow restrictors. Inserts placed in holes through which flow restricted, effectively reducing cross sections available for flow. Friction alone holds inserts against moderate upstream pressures. Use of coil-spring thread inserts as flow restrictors conceived as inexpensive solution to problem of adjusting flow of oxygen through orifices in faceplate into hydrogen/oxygen combustion chamber. Installation and removal of threaded inserts gentle enough not to deform orifice tubes.

Modelling and design for PM/EM magnetic bearings

A mathematical model of a permanent magnet/electromagnet (PM/EM) radially active bearing is presented. The bearing is represented by both a reluctance model and a stiffness model. The reluctance model analyzes the magnetic circuit of the PM/EM bearings. By combining the two models, the performance of the bearing can be predicted given geometric dimensions, permanent magnet strength, and the parameters of the EM coils. The overall bearing design including the PM and EM design is subject to the performance requirement and physical constraints. A study of these requirements and constraints is discussed. The PM design is based on the required magnetic flux for proper geometric dimensions and magnet strength. The EM design is based on the stability and force slew rate consideration, and dictates the number of turns for the EM coils and the voltage and current of the power amplifier. An overall PM/EM bearing design methodology is proposed and a case study is also demonstrated.
