Microstructural instabilities associated with a metastable lamellar eutectic when exposed to an elevated temperature were analyzed in a Zn-3Mg-4Al alloy as a model system. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy showed that annealing at a temperature 43 K below the equilibrium eutectic temperature converted the metastable ternary MgZn 2 /η-Zn/β-ZnAl eutectic to a stable mixture of Mg 2 Zn 11 /η-Zn/α-Al. 3D EBSD suggested that supersaturation of η-Zn with Mg and Al eased difficulties in nucleation of Mg 2 Zn 11 and α-Al at the MgZn 2 /η-Zn phase interfaces. Quasi-in-situ X-ray nanotomography revealed that a reactive diffusion process prevailed in an early stage of annealing leading to rapid consumption of MgZn 2 for growth of Mg 2 Zn 11 and concomitant thinning and pinch-off of η-Zn lamellae. The reactive diffusion process also brought about significant and quantifiable changes in the topological characteristics of the η-Zn phase at remarkably shorter time scales compared to Rayleigh instability and Ostwald ripening mechanisms. Overall, the present results provide fresh insights on the short-term annealing effects on metastable eutectics, with relevance to structural evolution in additive manufacturing.

Here, in this work, we report a novel approach to reduce the channel resistance by inducing a phase transition behavior from 2H to 1T in a monolayer MoS 2 (1L-MoS 2 ) by a synchrotron X-ray monochromatic beam (mono-beam) radiation. The effects of the biphase structure by the mono-beam on the 1L-MoS2 film were investigated using Raman spectra, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, scanning tunneling microscopy, and scanning tunneling spectroscopy, respectively. Through material characterization, we identified that the lateral sliding of S-vacancies along the S-plane in the 1L-MoS 2 is the key reason for the origin of unidirectional phase transition. The precise phase engineering triggered by the mono-beam radiation process allows the realization of field-effect transistors (FET) with 2X improvement in mobility toward a high on/off ratio (~10 8 ) and a near-ideal subthreshold swing of ~88 mV per decade. The validity of the phase engineering could be further extended for its application as a memory device, exhibiting a gate tunable conduction modulation behavior and a high resistance ratio of ~10 2 at a gate bias of 5 V with endurance of ~100 cycles. Furthermore, an artificial neural network using the synaptic weight update with accuracy of ~93 % was achieved.
Highly selective ion separations are vital for recovering important salts, and membrane-based techniques may enable environmentally friendly ion separations that operate continuously. This study demonstrates that simply opposing convective flow with electromigration in track-etched membranes leads to remarkable selectivities among monovalent ions. Because the membrane-pore diameters are orders of magnitude larger than the ion diameters, advection moves all ions at the same velocity, whereas electrophoretic velocities are proportional to ion mobilities. Thus during counter-flow cation electromigration, less mobile cations have lower electromigration velocity components and pass through porous membranes more rapidly than more mobile cations. Using membranes with 400 nm pores, counter-flow electromigration gives Li + /K + selectivities of 100 and Li + /Na + selectivities around 30 in mixed-salt studies. In this work, numerical simulations based on the extended Nernst-Planck equation agree with trends in experimental data and highlight the importance of high Péclet numbers, high current-to-flow ratios, and uniform current distributions for achieving high selectivities. Importantly, experimental separations give high selectivities at 0.3 M ionic strength and low Li + /K + ratios, which suggest these methods may also work in brine solutions. Nevertheless, energy costs for such separations are high.
Ternary eutectic salts composed of MgCl 2 , NaCl, and KCl, referred to as MNK salts, have recently emerged as promising candidates as high-temperature heat transfer fluids and thermal energy storage media. Here we performed classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to predict the densities, specific heat capacities, viscosities, and ionic self-diffusivities for MNK salts over a wide temperature range. The impact of LiCl additive on their thermophysical properties was also investigated. To capture the electronic polarization of Cl anions by neighboring cations, we developed a novel shell-model potential using the force-matching method and a dataset of ab initio calculated interatomic forces. Our extensive MD simulations predict structure and properties for pure salts and binary/ternary salt mixtures in the MgCl 2 -NaCl-KCl-LiCl system in overall good agreement with available experimental and theoretical data, which corroborates the accuracy and reliability of our developed potential.

Understanding the response of nanovoids to irradiation damage advances our capability to design radiation tolerant materials. Recent in situ studies reveal the shrinkage of hexagon-shaped nanovoids in (110) textured Cu. However, the evolution of voids with irregular geometries under irradiation is less well understood. Here, in situ Kr ion irradiation was performed at 100 °C on single-crystal Cu (112) that possesses nanovoids with high aspect ratio. In situ studies show these elongated voids fragment into smaller voids and shrink gradually with increasing dose. Phase field simulations confirm that fragmentation of the void is governed by the competing kinetics between atoms diffusing toward and away from the elongated nanovoid. In conclusion, cost irradiation analysis reveals the formation of high-density defect clusters.
The durability of anode-free Li metal batteries is largely limited by the undesired Li plating/stripping irreversibility on the current collector due to the infinite volume change, uncontrollable Li dendrite growth, and continuous parasitic reactions between Li metal and the electrolyte. To address these challenges, the formation of a stable and robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with high ionic conductivity and strong mechanical strength is critical. Here, we developed an advanced electrolyte by introducing LiNO 3 into the localized high concentration electrolyte (LHCE) with lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) salt, 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) solvent, and 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropylether (TFTE) diluent to in situ construct a LiF and Li x N y O z co-enriched passivation layer on the Cu current collector. The synergetic effect of high mechanical strength of LiF and high ionic conductivity of Li x N y O z endows the Li metal anode with a high Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.35%. In conclusion, in anode-free Li metal pouch cell using LiFePO 4 (LFP) as a cathode holds an exceptionally improved capacity retention under the charging/discharging rate of 1/3 C, demonstrating great promise for developing dendrite-free and safe Li metal batteries.
It has been confirmed that single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) could generate reactive oxygen species in aprotic media by utilizing photon energy. However, the impact of photon irradiation on SWCNTs and the kinetics of the generation process in aprotic media are still unclear, which significantly limits the yield performance. In this work, the kinetics for photodynamic effects has been investigated by performing characterizations on ultraviolet-treated SWCNTs using Raman spectroscopy, conductive atomic force microscope (in-situ), kelvin probe force microscope, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is found that ultraviolet-treated SWCNTs are observed to have more defects, lower conductivity, and less surface charge after energy conversion. Starting from the fundamental intrinsic properties of SWCNTs, the kinetics and formation of these changes are thoroughly discussed. It turns out that the dispersion, chirality, and structural integrity of SWCNTs are important for achieving high-performance photodynamic effects, which are validated using several different SWCNTs as well as other carbon nanomaterials. A type of (6,5) s-SWCNTs exhibited the highest energy efficiency among a variety of other carbon nanomaterials. The yield rate is 2.15 mM/h, and the energy consumption is determined to be 2.79 W∙h/mM. This work is expected to help dramatically boost the energy efficiency of the photodynamic effect in aprotic media and pave the way for designing high-performance carbon nanomaterial-based photoinduced devices.
A rational design strategy combining theory and experiment is highly desirable for the development of U-Zr based fuels that are resistant to lanthanide-induced fuel-cladding chemical interaction (FCCI). Here, we performed rapid computational screening of FCCI-mitigating (via strong lanthanide-binding) elements across the periodic table by utilizing three simple criteria and density functional theory (DFT) calculated total energies of relevant elements and compounds retrieved from high-throughput DFT databases. In addition to successfully identifying previously demonstrated additives, our search leads to the discovery of Bi as a highly effective element among all 68 elements screened, and its effectiveness was experimentally confirmed in this study.
