Visible to near-infrared spectral reflectance along the NGEE-Arctic tram transect, Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska, 2015-2018

Canopy spectral reflectance collected measured in 2015-2018 along the NGEE-Arctic tram located on the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO), Barrow, Alaska. Measurements were made using a PP-Systems UniSpec-DC spectrometer mounted on an automatically operated instrument cart. Spectra were collected at 137 stop points at 0.5 m intervals along the tram transect. Transect runs were collected daily, or multiple times per day, from April or May through to August or September each year. Downwelling radiance was measured using a 2 meter fiber optic cable connected to a cosine diffuser. Upwelling (i.e. reflected) radiance was measured using a 2 meter cable connected to a 12 degree field-of-view (FOV) lens. Canopy reflectance was calculated using the ratio of upwelling to downwelling radiance measured over a 99.99% reflectance Spectralon standard measured at the start of each measurement set. Unprocessed spectral data are presented in .spu files. Metadata are provided in csv files, and the instrument manual (pdf). The Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments: Arctic (NGEE Arctic), was a 15-year research effort (2012-2027) to reduce uncertainty in Earth System Models by developing a predictive understanding of carbon-rich Arctic ecosystems and feedbacks to climate. NGEE Arctic was supported by the Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research. The NGEE Arctic project had two field research sites: 1) located within the Arctic polygonal tundra coastal region on the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO) and the North Slope near Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska and 2) multiple areas on the discontinuous permafrost region of the Seward Peninsula north of Nome, Alaska. Through observations, experiments, and synthesis with existing datasets, NGEE Arctic provided an enhanced knowledge base for multi-scale modeling and contributed to improved process representation at global pan-Arctic scales within the Department of Energy's Earth system Model (the Energy Exascale Earth System Model, or E3SM), and specifically within the E3SM Land Model component (ELM).

An Acoustic Quench Detection Method for CICC Conductor Operating in Gas or Liquid

A method using micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) acoustic sensor technology to detect a quench and abnormal behavior of a superconductor is discussed. MEMS of microphone chips are installed along the coolant space of a superconducting conductor to monitor the coolant condition. By arranging the acoustic sensor array in a coolant flow channel, it is possible to quickly detect a change in the local condition of the coolant with precise spatial resolution. This method is useful for monitoring superconducting magnets and power cables, especially those made with a cable-in-conduit-conductor (CICC) configuration. The methodology described in this work will also be very useful for a high temperature superconducting (HTS) conductor, such as REBCO tape conductors.

Quick-attach clamp

Clamp of the slideable jaw type can be applied to moving lines such as cables or ropes. The clamp has a trigger-operated jaw that can be attached to a redrop parachute on a moving tow cable. The trigger mechanism maintains the jaws retracted in the housing until they are released for clamping.

High-field superconducting nested coil magnet

Superconducting magnet, employed in conjunction with five types of superconducting cables in a nested solenoid configuration, produces total, central magnetic field strengths approaching 70 kG. The multiple coils permit maximum information on cable characteristics to be gathered from one test.

Rotary stripper for shielded and unshielded FCC

Rotary stripper removes narrow strips of insulation and shielding to any desired depth. Unshielded cables are stripped on both sides with one stroke, shielded cables are stripped in steps of different depths.

Future development of instructional television

The use of television in schools as an aid to instruction is proposed for individualized instruction, repetition for slow learners, acceleration for fast learners, and lectures from the best teachers for all students. A dedicated school district cable system, a 40 channel cable to each school and classroom, is considered. This innovation offers an opportunity for improving the quality and content of the school's instruction and for reducing the cost.

A preliminary study of containment concepts for aircraft landing on elevated STOL-ports

A preliminary study of containment systems for aircraft landing on elevated STOL-ports was conducted as part of an overall study of human acceptance problems associated with STOL operations. The study included a survey and feasibility study of different concepts and a computer analysis of four arrestment systems. The principal conclusion was that a system referred to as the FAA system appears to offer the greatest promise. In this system, standard arresting gear cables are stretched across the roof-top, at roughly 100-foot intervals, but are shielded over the 100-foot-wide primary landing strip. Thus a pilot can land with an arresting hook down, but will not contact the cable unless he swerves off the landing strip, either because he has made a bad landing, or because his landing gear has failed. It was also noted that a suitable curb or guard rail should be developed. Presently available arresting gears and nylon net barriers were considered satisfactory for the overshoot problem.

A vacuum chamber feedthrough

Simple and inexpensive microwave feedthrough has been designed which transfers 130 ns, 5kV pulse into vacuum chamber. Feedthrough may be used over wide range and is adaptable to most coaxial cables, since either multistrand or single strand center conductor cable can be used.

An investigation of a movable mass-attitude stabilization system for artificial-G space

The application of a single movable mass to generate control torques for the attitude control of space vehicles is discussed. The feasibility of a movable mass control in stabilizing a cable-connected, artificial gravity configuration is proposed. A dynamic model for cable-connected configurations to account for the aggregate motion of the space station and relative torsional motion between the crew quarters and counter weight is developed.

HALAR fluoropolymer: A versatile insulation material

Research directed toward developing materials for the wire and cable industry has resulted in a new product, E-CTFE copolymer, which has an outstanding combination of electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. The properties of E-CTFE are discussed and compared with those of other commercial fluoropolymers. Particular attention is given to the utility of E-CTFE as a wire and cable insulation.

Electrical impedance of FCC

The electrical characteristics of FCC are investigated in the context of multiple transmission lines theory. Analytical expressions for the coefficients of capacitance of conductors in a single cable are obtained. Numerical values calculated with these expressions are in good agreement with experimental data. Crosstalk, attenuation constants and phase angles of the current and voltage in flat conductor cable are also calculated.

Analytical prediction of digital signal crosstalk of FCC

The results are presented of study effort whose aim was the development of accurate means of analyzing and predicting signal cross-talk in multi-wire digital data cables. A complete analytical model is developed n + 1 wire systems of uniform transmission lines with arbitrary linear boundary conditions. In addition, a minimum set of parameter measurements required for the application of the model are presented. Comparisons between cross-talk predicted by this model and actual measured cross-talk are shown for a six conductor ribbon cable.

A modified quadrupole mass spectrometer with custom RF link rods driver for remote operation

A commercial quadrupole residual gas analyzer system has been upgraded for operation at extended cable lengths. Operation inside a vacuum chamber for the standard quadrupole nude head is limited to approximately 2 m from its externally located rf/dc generator because of the detuning of the rf oscillator circuits by the coaxial cable reactance. The advance of long distance remote operation inside a vacuum chamber for distances of 45 and 60 m was made possible without altering the quadrupole's rf/dc generator circuit by employing an rf link to drive the quadrupole rods. Applications of the system have been accomplished for in situ space simulation thermal/vacuum testing of sophisticated payloads.
