Electrification of Airport Shuttle Operations

Fleet owners are increasingly looking to adopt electric vehicles, however careful consideration is needed to ensure electric vehicles can perform their duty without impacting operations. This work examines a fleet of 200 Dallas-Fort Worth airport shuttle buses to estimate the opportunity for vehicle electrification. Analysis suggests unique pathways to electrification for each mode of operation, and unique benefits and challenges whether they serve employee lots, rental car lots, remote lots, or aircraft hardstand operations. These analyses include daily energy consumption, charging opportunities; emissions impacts; and charging location potential using hotspot analysis. Results highlight the most promising candidates for electrification and provide pathways for future electrification.

EMT Models to Evaluate Traveling Wave-Based Protection in Distribution System

The distribution system is going through significant changes. One of them is the high penetration of inverter-based distributed energy resources in the distribution system. Due to this high penetration, there is a need for a better protection system. Multiple organizations are working on creating novel protection techniques for distribution systems with high penetration of inverter-based DERs. One such innovative method is the use of traveling waves to detect and locate faults. Transmission system protection utilizes this approach, and commercial solutions exist for the transmission system. Using this approach in the distribution system is not straightforward and presents some challenges for implementation. This presentation will discuss the need for using wide-band models to model the traveling wave phenomenon in the distribution system.

Propane Basics

Propane powers nearly 60,000 vehicles in the United States. Fleets around the United States have successfully implemented propane vehicles in many types of applications, including school buses, shuttle buses, step vans, and law enforcement vehicles. Propane is also frequently used in off-road applications, such as forklifts, commercial landscape mowers and equipment, and other farm equipment. The advantages of propane include its domestic availability, performance, and emissions benefits.

Development of dispensing hardware for safe fueling of heavy duty vehicles

The development of safe dispensing equipment for the fueling of heavy duty (HD) vehicles is critical to the expansion of this newly and quickly expanding market. This paper discusses the development of a HD dispenser and nozzles assembly (nozzle, hose, breakaway) for these new, larger vehicles where flow rates are more than double compared to light duty (LD) vehicles. This equipment must operate at nominal pressures of 700 bar, -40o C gas temperature, and average flow rate of 5-10 kg/min at a high throughput commercial hydrogen fueling station without leaking hydrogen. The project surveyed HD vehicle manufacturers, station developers, and component suppliers to determine the basic specifications of the dispensing equipment and nozzle assembly. The team also examined existing codes and standards to determine necessary changes to accommodate HD components. From this information, the team developed a set of specifications which will be used to design the dispensing equipment. In order to meet these goals, the team performed computational fluid dynamic, pressure modelling, and temperature analysis in order to determine the necessary parameters to meet existing safety standards modified for HD fueling. The team also considered user, operational, and maintenance requirements, such as freeze lock which has been an issue which prevents the removal of the nozzle from LD vehicles. The team also performed a failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) to identify the possible failures in the design. The dispenser and nozzle assembly will be tested separately, and then installed on an innovative, HD fueling station which will use a HD vehicle simulator to test the entire system.

Demand-adaptive Transit Design for Urban Transportation Hubs

In this study, we proposed a novel three-stage framework for planning the optimal demand-adaptive transit (DAT) at urban transportation hubs. Given the potential trip demand and road traffic condition, the proposed framework sequentially generates the optimal set of candidate routes, combines the outgoing routes and incoming routes at the hub, and derives the optimal fleet size and corresponding route frequency under the fixed budget. In particular, we build the route generation algorithm which maximizes passenger demand coverage with travel time deviation constraint. And a heuristic algorithm is further developed which yields near-optimal operation routes for real-time demand. The fleet optimization problem is formulated to minimize the weighted cost of energy savings, operation cost and trip revenue. We conduct comprehensive numerical experiments for planning DAT with electric buses at JFK airport in NYC using NYC taxi and for-hire vehicle trip data and GoogleMap speed data. The results show the superior performance of the proposed route generation algorithm which is able to cover citywide passenger demand with only 61 DAT routes. The results also suggest that the proposed DAT planning framework may serve over 47% of existing taxi and FHV demand by operating 18 routes using the fleet of 62 electric buses.

Electrifying Education: Insights into Charging Electric School Buses in the United States

School buses (SBs) have historically been a source of both greenhouse gas emissions and local air pollutants have negative health impacts for students and others living nearby. Battery electric SBs (ESBs) are a promising emerging technology for decarbonizing student transport, however, ESB adoption in the U.S. remains at an early stage (approximate 1.1%) with many outstanding uncertainties. In this study, we take inventory of the current SB stock within U.S. states and observe real-world SB operating profiles to better understand the potential battery range requirements, daily charging opportunities, and charging infrastructure needs for ESBs.
