4-gc parametric amplifier for satellite communication ground station receiver

This paper describes the design and performance of a 4-gc parametric amplifier which meets the stringent requirements of a satellite ground station receiver. It consists of two cascaded stages of similar design: the first of these is operated at liquid nitrogen temperature and the second at room temperature. One 23-gc pump source is used for both amplifier stages. The combination of the two amplifier stages provides 38-db over-all gain, 45°K over-all system input noise temperature, 60-mc bandwidth, 0.1-db short-term gain stability and 0.3-db long-term gain stability. A carefully designed cryogenic system maintains the amplifier refrigerated with only infrequent refilling of the dewar, i.e., once every 10 days.

Variable word length encoder reduces TV bandwith requirements

Adaptive variable resolution encoding technique provides an adaptive compression pseudo-random noise signal processor for reducing television bandwidth requirements. Complementary processors are required in both the transmitting and receiving systems. The pretransmission processor is analog-to-digital, while the postreception processor is digital-to-analog.

Investigation and study of a multi-aperture antenna system final report, 1 jan. - 1 apr. 1964

This investigation was concerned with a multiple aperture adaptive antenna system for application to receiving telemetered data from remote space vehicles or satellites. The primary criterion for determining the feasibility of such a system has been economic considerations, but of necessity many physical constraints imposed on both a single antenna and a multiple aperture system have been evaluated. These include such factors as acquisition and combining of signals, look angle, shadowing, propagation influences system spatial bandwidth, collimation, interference, doppler effects, reliability, and noise. Specific conclusions have been made for a system operating at a frequency of 2 Gc, but the system model adopted allows quick evaluation at other frequencies. At a frequency of 2Gc, the crossover point between a single antenna or a multiple aperture configuration occurs for an 85 foot reflector. However this transition region is not critical. For lunar range communications a single antenna appears to be the most economical, whereas at interplanetary ranges aperture equivalents of around 400 feet are required and achieved by arraying eight 142 foot antennas.

Analysis of the Range and Range Rate Tracking System

The "range and range rate"' (r(sub i) + r(sub i)) system in its very simplest form is described. In particular, the errors in position and velocity are treated using pessimistic values of the measured quantities r(sub i) and r(sub i). Thus, a realistic evaluation of tracking qualities can be made for different orbits over certain tracking stations. The range and range rate system briefly described in this paper is a high-precision tracking system. Knowledge of the uncertainty in position δ(sub xi) is important, but knowledge of the uncertainty of the velocity vector δ(sub xi) is of the utmost importance. Thus the use of coherent Doppler measurements to determine the velocity has a great advantage over any pulsed system and, in addition, permits extremely narrow frequency bandwidths (in the order of 10 to 100 cps) to be employed, reducing the power requirements considerably. The basis for using range r(sub i) and range rate r(sub i) only is the fact that r(sub i) and r(sub i) can be measured to very high precision, thus furnishing r and r with low errors. The nature of these errors is discussed.

Optical superheterodyne receiver uses laser for local oscillator

Optical superheterodyne receiver uses a laser coupled to a frequency translator to supply both the incident signal and local oscillator signal and thus permit reception of amplitude modulated video bandwidth signals through the atmosphere. This receiver is useful in scientific propagation experiments, tracking experiments, and communication experiments.

Classification and Evaluation of Coherent Synchronous Sampled-Data Telemetry Systems

This paper analyzes the various types of continuous wave and pulse modulation for the transmission of sampled data over channels perturbed by white gaussian noise. Optimal coherent synchronous detection schemes for all the different modulation methods are shown to belong to one of two general classes: linear synchronous detection and correlation detection. The figures of merit, mean-square signal-to-error ratio and bandwidth occupancy, are determined for each system and compared.

Field effect transistors improve buffer amplifier

Unity gain buffer amplifier with a Field Effect Transistor /FET/ differential input stage responds much faster than bipolar transistors when operated at low current levels. The circuit uses a dual FET in a unity gain buffer amplifier having extremely high input impedance, low bias current requirements, and wide bandwidth.

Concept for automatic Doppler compensation in two-way communication systems

Automatic Frequency Control system compensates for Doppler shift in two-way communication systems where one or both stations are moving. This automatic correction can be applied to the reply link to elimate frequency search for the reply or an excessive bandwidth to accommodate the Doppler.

A high power travelling wave tube for satellite communications

This paper describes the CW travelling wave tube used by the Genera Post Office in their ground transmitter for Project Telstar. It operatcs in the 6000 Mc/s band with a maximum power output of about 5 kw and a bandwidth of great than 100 Mc/s. The factors influencing the design of the valve and its performance are discussed in some detail.
