Multi-channel chopper system for a total ozone mapping spectrometer

A multi-channel chopper system designed and built to stringent specifications is providing an excellent performance for a total ozone mapping spectrometer (TOMS). State of the art machining technology, suitable material selection, and a way to hold and position the slit plate resulted in the instrument's better than expected performance. A shutter method used for internal calibration allows compensation for the occurrence of an unlikely wavelength shift during testing, launch, or during the orbiting life of the instrument. The TOMS is part of a payload on Nimbus 7 launched on October 24, 1978.

Cerenkov x total energy telescopes for the study of the mass composition of cosmic rays

The mass resolution attainable with cosmic ray telescopes employing Cerenkov counters for velocity measurement was examined. It is shown that in most cases, the limiting mass resolution is determined by the resolution of the Cerenkov counter. The resolution achieved in the UNH telescope flown on a balloon in 1977 is studied as a function of charge and energy. This telescope determines the mass using the Cerenkov x total energy technique. It is shown that the mass resolution for heavier nuclei can be accurately predicted using the response of the Cerenkov counter to sea level mu-mesons. The actual in flight resolution for heavier nuclei, including broadening effects, may be predicted using the beta = 1 Cerenkov distributions, and independently by studying the distribution function of the differences of the two banks of photomultipliers employed on each Cerenkov counter.

Lu-Hf total-rock isochron for the eucrite meteorites

The isotope Lu-176 (2.6% of natural lutetium) decays by beta(-) to Hf-176, with a long half life. The first Lu-Hf isochron is presented. The eucrite meteorites, a suite of planetary igneous rocks of known age, 4,550 Myr, define a 10-point total-rock isochron with a slope of 0.0934 + or - 40, leading to a value of 3.53 + or - 0.14 x 10 to the 10th yr for the beta(-) decay half life of Lu-176. The isochron intercept of 0.27973 + or - 12 gives the initial Hf-176/Hf-177 for the inner solar system at the time of accretion.

Spatial and temporal variations of monthly mean total columnar ozone derived from 7 years of BUV data

Ninth-degree spherical harmonic models are used to represent monthly mean total columnar ozone fields, with spatial spectra defined in terms of simple analytic expressions representing the rms value of each spherical harmonic coefficient. The spectra are combined with estimation theory techniques to develop a realistic error analysis accounting for errors due to nonglobal coverage. Amplitude and phase variations for longitudinal waves one, two and three are presented, and it is shown that these waves reinforce in space and time in the period of high poleward ozone transport in the northern hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere, the wave two and three components are much smaller, with wave one maximum amplitude occurring in September and October.

A general method for computing the total solar radiation force on complex spacecraft structures

The method circumvents many of the existing difficulties in computational logic presently encountered in the direct analytical or numerical evaluation of the appropriate surface integral. It may be applied to complex spacecraft structures for computing the total force arising from either specular or diffuse reflection or even from non-Lambertian reflection and re-radiation.

Total plankton respiration in the Chesapeake Bay plume

Total plankton respiration (TPR) was measured at 17 stations within the Chesapeake Bay plume off the Virginia coast during March, June, and October 1980. Elevated rates of TPR, as well as higher concentrations of chlorophyll a and phaeopigment a, were found to be associated with the Bay plume during each survey. The TPR rates within the Bay plume were close to those found associated with the Hudson River plume for comparable times of the year. The data examined indicate that the Chesapeake Bay plume stimulates biological activity and is a source of organic loading to the contiguous shelf ecosystem.

Submillimeter observations of solar limb-brightening in the total solar eclipse of 31 July 1981

Eight flights of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) were devoted to solar observation. The successful observation of a total solar eclipse was accomplished. The observations were made simultaneously at 30, 50, 100, and 200 microns. The successful adaptation of the KAO for solar observations thus provided the most detailed data to date in this spectral band. The results from a preliminary analysis of the KAO data are summarized: (1) the 200 micron limb is extended about 3 arc sec above the 30 micron limb, indicating the prescence of cool dense material up to the altitudes of spicules; (2) strong radial darkening of the quiet sun intensity profile appeared at 200 microns, probably an indication that hot material in the low chromosphere is recessed into vertical magnetic flux tubes embedded in a cooler nonmagnetic substrate, which obscures the heated material approaching the limb; (3) active regions were observed to undergo a strong increase in contrast above the quiet sun background at wave lengths of 100 microns and longer; and (4) the moon was mapped for use as a photometric standard for determining the absolute intensity of the sun in all four wavelength bands.

Tribological characteristics of a composite total-surface hip replacement

Continuous fiber, woven E glass composite femoral shells having the same elastic properties as bone were fabricated. The shells were then encrusted with filled epoxy wear resistant coatings and run dry against ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene acetabular cups in 42,000 and 250,000 cycle wear tests on a total hip simulator. The tribological characteristics of these continuous fiber particulate composite femoral shells articulating with ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene acetabular cups were comparable to those of a vitallium ball articulating with an ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene acetabular cup.

Total-dose radiation effects data for semiconductor devices, volume 2

Total ionizing dose radiation test data on integrated circuits are analyzed. Tests were performed with the electron accelerator (Dynamitron) that provides a steady state 2.5 MeV electron beam. Some radiation exposures were made with a Cobalt-60 gamma ray source. The results obtained with the Cobalt-60 source are considered an approximate measure of the radiation damage that would be incurred by an equivalent dose of electrons.

Satellite Power System total proof of concept program

Requirements for a solar power satellite (SPS) orbital demonstration for providing a system proof of concept within the decade of the 1980s are outlined. Maximum use of the anticipated results of the ground based exploratory development program (GBED) results and Earth launching via the space shuttle are assumed. System demonstration requirements are listed. It was determined that total proof of concept can be demonstrated with a satellite at low Earth orbit, and that orbital construction of a full scale microwave antenna structure is feasible, as is demonstration of power collection by a transportable rectanna farm with an area of approximately one half acre.

Measurement of total electron content of midlatitude ionosphere and protonosphere via Faraday rotation and group relay techniques using transmission from geostationary satellites ATS-3 and ATS-6

Measurement of integrated columnar electron content and total electron content for the local ionosphere and the overlying protonosphere via Faraday rotation and group delay techniques has proven very useful. A field station was established having the geographic location of 31.5 deg N latitude and 91.06 deg W longitude to accomplish these objectives. A polarimeter receiving system was set up in the beginning to measure the Faraday rotation of 137.35 MHz radio signal from geostationary satellite ATS 3 to yield the integrated columnar electron content of the local ionosphere. The measurement was continued regularly, and the analysis of the data thus collected provided a synopsis of the statistical variation of the ionosphere along with the transient variations that occurred during the periods of geomagnetic and other disturbances.

Develop and test fuel cell powered on-site integrated total energy systems: Phase 3: Full-scale power plant development

The development of a commercially viable and cost-effective phospheric acid fuel cell powered on-site integrated energy system (OS/IES) is described. The fuel cell offers energy efficients in the range of 35-40% of the higher heating value of available fuels in the form of electrical energy. In addition, by utilizing the thermal energy generated for heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC), a fuel cell OS/IES could provide total energy efficiencies in the neighborhood of 80%. Also, the Engelhard fuel cell OS/IES offers the important incentive of replacing imported oil with domestically produced methanol, including coal-derived methanol.

Total nitrogen content of deep sea basalts

An estimate of the total nitrogen content of the earth's mantle, aimed at furnishing a further constraint for earth atmosphere origin and evolution models, was attempted through thermal neutron activation analysis via N-14(n,p)C-14 for the case of deep sea basalt glasses from the East Pacific Rise, the Mid-Atlantic Rift, and the Juan de Fuca Ridge. The increased nitrogen abundance of matrix material from the same samples as the glasses may be due to the incorporation of chemically-bound nitrogen from sea water, rather than dissolved molecular nitrogen. A discussion is presented of factors affecting observed basalt nitrogen content and its interpretation in terms of mantle nitrogen abundance. A 2 ppm N lower limit is estimated for the mantle.
