ALFA Field Testing of a Dual Sonar System for Detecting Woody Debris

Field testing of a dual sonar system for detecting woody debris in natural settings was conducted at the Tanana River Test Site (TRTS) in Nenana, AK between 8/26 and 9/23, 2015. The TRTS is approximately 65 miles south of Fairbanks and is well suited for testing hydrokinetic energy generation technologies and environmental monitoring technologies such as the dual sonar system used here in realistic settings.

Magnetic Gears for a Marine Hydrokinetic Generator Component Model

The goal of this project is to design, fabricate, and test a hermetically sealed 50 kilowatt (kW) multistage magnetically geared generator (MGG). The Component Content Model provides data submitters with an easy and consistent means of uploading data and associated meta data about a component that is currently under development. The data fields include generic information about the component, technology classifications, current costs and performance, proposed target goals, and the environment that the component is operated in. These data are important to DOE and will be used to develop data products that provide quantitative information to guide and support programmatic decisions. Data will also be used by DOE in general assessments of MHK component readiness, performance, costs, and proposed plans. The ultimate goal is to use these data to perform research and tailor programs to best benefit the industry.

Sub-Scale Stage 1 Magnetic Gear for a Marine Hydrokinetic Generator

The goal of this project is to design, fabricate, and test a hermetically sealed 50 kilowatt (kW) multistage magnetically geared generator (MGG). In order to reduce risk, a sub-scale 5kW multistage MGG was first built. This project will benefit MHK device developers by providing an MHK PTO that overcomes the reliability concerns of the mechanical gears and the sizing constraints of the direct-drive generators. Measurement data for a 9.5:1 gear ratio magnetic gear with a measured peak torque of 227 N-m as well as the dual stage magnetic gear with a 63:1 gear ratio.

Additional Degree of Freedom for WEC Model

'Additional Degree of Freedom for WEC' - WEC-Sim numerical model from RFTS 1 TEAMER project. An increase in wave energy converter (WEC) efficiency requires not only consideration of the nonlinear effects in the WEC dynamics and the power take-off (PTO) mechanisms, but also more integrated treatment of the whole system, i.e., the buoy dynamics, the PTO system, and the control strategy. It results in an optimization formulation that has a nonquadratic and nonstandard cost functional. This model presents the application of real-time nonlinear model predictive controller (NMPC) to two degrees of freedom point absorber type WEC with highly nonlinear PTO characteristics. The nonlinear effects, such as the fluid viscous drag, are also included in the plant dynamics. The controller may be implemented on a real-time target machine, and the WEC device is emulated in real-time using the WECSIM toolbox. Please see the ‘ReadMe’ within the root directory for an explanation of how to set-up and run the model. An article covering the development of this model is attached as "Real-Time Nonlinear Model Predictive Controller for Multiple Degrees of Freedom Wave Energy Converters with Non-Ideal Power Take-Off"

CalWave - TEAMER UMaine 2021 Tank Testing

This is the data submission to the teamer report for RFTS1 during which tank testing at UMaine W2 tank occurred. This submission includes the relevant information and recorded data of CalWave's UMaine wave tank testing conducted under TEAMER Request for Support Round 1. During the testing CalWave assessed an autonomous control approach for changing PTO gain parameters based on "on board" sea state detection. The data submitted includes an overview of normalized PTO gains based on sea state values and for a set of 8 relevant sea states the WEC motion. All data was collected on CalWave's SCADA system and UMaine's motion tracking system. The data submitted suffices the creation of figures as shown in the PDF report submitted alongside the data and the submission includes excel sheets (parameter gains), MATLAB structures (absorber motion), and the mentioned PDF report.

Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) Content Model for Design of High Deflection Foils for MHK Applications

The LCOE Content Model provides data submitters with an easy and consistent means of uploading data that can be used to calculate the levelized cost of energy for MHK devices. These data are important to DOE and will be used to develop data products that provide quantitative information to guide and support programmatic decisions. Data will also be used to evaluate MHK products and determine costs and can help data users compare the combination of capital costs and operations and maintenance over time. The ultimate goal is to use these data to perform research and tailor programs to best benefit the industry.

Triton Field Trials Changes in Habitat 360-degree Underwater Videos

This dataset contains the underwater 360-degree video files recorded with a Boxfish 360 camera in La Jolla, CA, near a gravity base anchor of the CalWave xWave wave energy converter in December 2021 over three days, at dawn, noon, and dusk. It was generated to test the ability of using this type of camera mounted on an aluminum frame as a video lander to monitor the artificial reef effect of marine energy devices and associated seafloor structures. The Boxfish 360 is made of 3 cameras each recording its own set of videos. The videos are MOV files that can be viewed individually with any video reader but need to be stitched together to create the 360-degree footage. This dataset contains all the raw video files collected at dawn, noon and dusk on 11/30/2021, 12/01/2021 and 12/02/2021, for about 1h each time. This dataset is associated with the journal manuscript below (linked in resources): Hemery, L.G.; Mackereth, K.F.; Gunn, C.M.; Pablo, E.B.
