Near-infrared chemical abundances of stars in the Sculptor dwarf galaxy

Owing to the recent identification of major substructures in our Milky Way (MW), the astronomical community has started to reevaluate the importance of dissolved and existing dwarf galaxies. In this work, we investigate up to 13 elements in 43 giant stars of the Sculptor dwarf galaxy (Scl) using high-signal-to-noise-ratio near-infrared (NIR) APOGEE spectra. Thanks to the strong feature lines in the NIR, we were able to determine high-resolution O, Si, and Al abundances for a large group of sample stars for the first time in Scl. By comparing the [α/Fe] (i.e., O, Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti) of the stars in Scl, Sagittarius, and the MW, we confirm the general trend that less massive galaxies tend to show lower [α/Fe]. The low [Al/Fe] (~ - 0.5) in Scl demonstrates the value of this ratio as a discriminator with which to identify stars born in dwarf galaxies (from MW field stars). A chemical-evolution model suggests that Scl has a top-light initial mass function (IMF), with a high-mass IMF power index of ~ - 2.7, and a minimum Type Ia supernovae delay time of ~100 Myr. Furthermore, a linear regression analysis indicates a negative radial metallicity gradient and positive radial gradients for [Mg/Fe] and [Ca/Fe], in qualitative agreement with the outside-in formation scenario.

SIT 45: An interacting, compact, and star-forming isolated galaxy triplet

The underlying scenario of the formation and evolution of galaxy triplets is still uncertain. Mergers of galaxies in isolated triplets give us the opportunity to study the already complex merging process, with minimal contamination of other environmental effects that potentially allow and accelerate galaxy transitions from active star-forming to passive galaxies. The merging system SIT 45 (UGC 12589) is one of 315 systems in the SDSS-based catalogue of Isolated Triplets (SIT); it is an unusual isolated galaxy triplet, consisting of three merging late-type galaxies. The main aims of this work are to study the dynamical evolution and star formation history (SFH) of SIT 45, as well as its dependence on its local and large-scale environment. Methods. To study its dynamics, parameters such as the velocity dispersion (σ v ), the harmonic radius (R H ), the crossing time (H 0 t c ), and the virial mass (M vir ), along with the compactness of the triplet (S) were considered. To investigate the possible dependence of these dynamical parameters on the environment, the tidal force Q parameters (both local and large-scale) and the projected local density (η k ) were used. To constrain the SFH, we used CIGALE to fit its observed spectral energy distribution using multiwavelength data from the ultraviolet to the infrared. SIT 45 is one of the most compact triplets in the SIT, and it is also more compact than triplets in other samples. According to its SFH, SIT 45 presents star formation, where the galaxies also present recent (~200 Myr) star formation increase, indicating that this activity may have been triggered by the interaction. Its dynamical configuration suggests that the system is highly evolved in comparison to the SIT. However, this is not expected for systems composed of star-forming late-type galaxies, based on observations in compact groups. We conclude that SIT 45 is a system of three interacting galaxies that are evolving within the same dark matter halo; its compact configuration is a consequence of the ongoing interaction rather than being due to a long-term evolution (as suggested from its H 0 t c value). We consider two scenarios for the present configuration of the triplet, one where one of the members is a tidal galaxy, and another where this galaxy arrives to the system after the interaction. Both scenarios need further exploration. The isolated triplet SIT 45 is therefore an ideal system to study short timescale mechanisms (~10 8 yr), such as starbursts triggered by interactions which are more frequent at higher redshift.

High critical current STAR ® wires with REBCO tapes by advanced MOCVD

RE–Ba–Cu–O (REBCO, RE = rare earth) symmetric tape round (STAR ® ) wires of 1.5–2.5 mm diameter have been fabricated with 4–12 strands of symmetric REBCO tape made by advanced metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). 1.5 mm diameter STAR ® wires made with just four advanced MOCVD tape strands are able to sustain nearly the same critical current (I c ) as 2.5 mm diameter wires made with 12 commercial-grade tape strands. An I c of 1070 A, corresponding to an engineering current density (J e ) of 597 A mm –2 , has been demonstrated at 4.2 K, 30 T in 1.5 mm diameter, four-strand wire at a bend radius of 15 mm. This I c value exactly matches the Ic expected from the lift factor of the tape strands used in the wire. The 2.5 mm diameter STAR ® wires made with 12 advanced MOCVD tape strands exhibit an I c of 1075 A at 77 K, self-field and sustained currents of 2500–2750 A at 4.2 K, 30 T before burnout, corresponding to a J e greater than 500 A mm –2 . Finally, these results show that the cost of STAR ® wires can be substantially reduced using fewer tape strands of high-performance advanced MOCVD tapes and that the superior bend performance of STAR ® wires can be maintained, even using 12 strands of advanced MOCVD tapes with 4 μm thick REBCO films.

Deducing neutron star equation of state from telescope spectra with machine-learning-derived likelihoods

The interiors of neutron stars reach densities and temperatures beyond the limits of terrestrial experiments, providing vital laboratories for probing nuclear physics. While the star's interior is not directly observable, its pressure and density determine the star's macroscopic structure which affects the spectra observed in telescopes. The relationship between the observations and the internal state is complex and partially intractable, presenting difficulties for inference. Previous work has focused on the regression from stellar spectra of parameters describing the internal state. We demonstrate a calculation of the full likelihood of the internal state parameters given observations, accomplished by replacing intractable elements with machine learning models trained on samples of simulated stars. Our machine-learning-derived likelihood allows us to perform maximum a posteriori estimation of the parameters of interest, as well as full scans. We demonstrate the technique by inferring stellar mass and radius from an individual stellar spectrum, as well as equation of state parameters from a set of spectra. Our results are more precise than pure regression models, reducing the width of the parameter residuals by 11.8% in the most realistic scenario. The neural networks will be released as a tool for fast simulation of neutron star properties and observed spectra.

Neural simulation-based inference of the neutron star equation of state directly from telescope spectra

Neutron stars provide a unique opportunity to study strongly interacting matter under extreme density conditions. The intricacies of matter inside neutron stars and their equation of state are not directly visible, but determine bulk properties, such as mass and radius, which affect the star's thermal X-ray emissions. However, the telescope spectra of these emissions are also affected by the stellar distance, hydrogen column, and effective surface temperature, which are not always well-constrained. Uncertainties on these nuisance parameters must be accounted for when making a robust estimation of the equation of state. In this study, we develop a novel methodology that, for the first time, can infer the full posterior distribution of both the equation of state and nuisance parameters directly from telescope observations. This method relies on the use of neural likelihood estimation, in which normalizing flows use samples of simulated telescope data to learn the likelihood of the neutron star spectra as a function of these parameters, coupled with Hamiltonian Monte Carlo methods to efficiently sample from the corresponding posterior distribution. Our approach surpasses the accuracy of previous methods, improves the interpretability of the results by providing access to the full posterior distribution, and naturally scales to a growing number of neutron star observations expected in the coming years.

A study of outer disc stellar populations of face-on star-forming galaxies in SDSS-IV MaNGA: causes of H α deficiency

ABSTRACT Integral field unit spectra of face-on star-forming galaxies from the MaNGA survey are stacked in radial bins so as to reach an S/N high enough to measure emission lines and Lick indices out to 2.5–3Re. Two-thirds of galaxies have stellar populations in the outer discs that are older, more metal poor, and less dusty than in the inner discs. Recent bursts of star formation have occurred more frequently in the outer disc, but extinction-corrected H α equivalent widths are significantly lower at fixed Dn(4000) in these regions. I examine the properties of a subset of galaxies with the most H α-deficient outer discs. These regions contain young stellar populations that must have formed within the last 0.5 Gyr, but have extinction-corrected H α values well below the values predicted for a standard Kroupa initial mass function. The H α-deficient galaxies have flat Dn(4000) and H δA profiles with little radial fluctuation, indicating that star formation has occurred extremely uniformly across the entire disc. The H α line profiles indicate that the ionized gas kinematics is also very regular across the disc. The main clue to the origin of the H α deficiency is that it sets in at the same radius where the dust extinction abruptly decreases, suggesting a mode of star formation deficient in massive stars in quiescent, H i-dominated gas. Finally, I have carried out a search for galaxies with signatures of unusual H α kinematics and find that 15 per cent of the sample exhibits evidence for significant ionized gas that is displaced from the systemic velocity of the disc.

Star-forming S0 galaxies in the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey

ABSTRACT To investigate star-forming activities in early-type galaxies, we select a sample of 52 star-forming S0 galaxies (SFS0s) from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. We find that SFS0s have smaller stellar masses compared to normal S0s in MaNGA. After matching the stellar mass to select the control sample, we find that the mean Sérsic index of SFS0 bulges (1.76 ± 0.21) is significantly smaller than that of the control sample (2.57 ± 0.20), suggesting the existence of pseudo-bulges in SFS0s. After introducing the environmental information, SFS0s show smaller spin parameters in the field than in groups, while the control sample has no obvious difference in different environments, which may suggest different dynamical processes in SFS0s. Furthermore, with derived N/O and O/H abundance ratios, SFS0s in the field show nitrogen enrichment, providing evidence for the accretion of metal-poor gas in the field environment. To study the star-formation relation, we show that the slope of the spatially resolved star-formation main sequence is nearly 1.0 with MaNGA integral field unit data, confirming the self-regulation of star-formation activity on kpc scales.

Observing correlations between dark matter accretion and galaxy growth: II. testing the impact of galaxy mass, star formation indicator, and neighbour colours

A crucial question in galaxy formation is what role new accretion has in star formation. Theoretical models have predicted a wide range of correlation strengths between halo accretion and galaxy star formation. Previously, we presented a technique to observationally constrain this correlation strength for isolated Milky Way mass galaxies at z ~ 0.12, based on the correlation between halo accretion and the density profile of neighbouring galaxies. By applying this technique to both observational data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and simulation data from the UNIVERSEMACHINE , where we can test different correlation strengths, we ruled out positive correlations between dark matter accretion and recent star formation activity. In this work, we expand our analysis by (1) applying our technique separately to red and blue neighbouring galaxies, which trace different infall populations, (2) correlating dark matter accretion rates with D n 4000 measurements as a longer-term quiescence indicator than instantaneous star-formation rates, and (3) analysing higher-mass isolated central galaxies with 10 11.0 < M * /M ⊙ < 10 11.5 out to z ~ 0.18. Finally, in all cases, our results are consistent with non-positive correlation strengths with ≳ 85 percent confidence, which is most consistent with models where processes such as gas recycling dominate star formation in massive z = 0 galaxies.

On the quenching of star formation in observed and simulated central galaxies: evidence for the role of integrated AGN feedback

ABSTRACT In this paper, we investigate how massive central galaxies cease their star formation by comparing theoretical predictions from cosmological simulations: EAGLE, Illustris, and IllustrisTNG with observations of the local Universe from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our machine learning (ML) classification reveals supermassive black hole mass (MBH) as the most predictive parameter in determining whether a galaxy is star forming or quenched at redshift z = 0 in all three simulations. This predicted consequence of active galactic nucleus (AGN) quenching is reflected in the observations, where it is true for a range of indirect estimates of MBH via proxies as well as its dynamical measurements. Our partial correlation analysis shows that other galactic parameters lose their strong association with quiescence, once their correlations with MBH are accounted for. In simulations, we demonstrate that it is the integrated power output of the AGN, rather than its instantaneous activity, which causes galaxies to quench. Finally, we analyse the change in molecular gas content of galaxies from star-forming to passive populations. We find that both gas fractions (fgas) and star formation efficiencies (SFEs) decrease upon transition to quiescence in the observations but SFE is more predictive than fgas in the ML passive/star-forming classification. These trends in the SDSS are most closely recovered in IllustrisTNG and are in direct contrast with the predictions made by Illustris. We conclude that a viable AGN feedback prescription can be achieved by a combination of preventative feedback and turbulence injection which together quench star formation in central galaxies.

Electrical conductivity of a warm neutron star crust in magnetic fields: Neutron-drip regime

We compute the anisotropic electrical conductivity tensor of the inner crust of a compact star at nonzero temperature by extending a previous work on the conductivity of the outer crust. The physical scenarios, where such crust is formed, involve protoneutron stars born in supernova explosions, binary neutron star mergers, and accreting neutron stars. The temperature-density range studied covers the transition from a semidegenerate to a highly degenerate electron gas and assumes that the nuclei form a liquid, i.e., the temperature is above the melting temperature of the lattice of nuclei. The electronic transition probabilities include (i) the screening of electron-ion interaction in the hard-thermal-loop approximation for the QED plasma, (ii) the correlations of the ionic component in a one-component plasma, and (iii) finite nuclear size effects. The conductivity tensor is obtained from the Boltzmann kinetic equation in relaxation time approximation accounting for the anisotropy introduced by a magnetic field. The sensitivity of the results towards the matter composition of the inner crust is explored by using several compositions of the inner crust, which were obtained using different nuclear interactions and methods of solving the many-body problem. The standard deviations of relaxation time and components of the conductivity tensor from the average are below ≤25% except close to crust-core transition, where nonspherical nuclear structures are expected. Finally, our results can be used in dissipative magnetohydrodynamics simulations of warm compact stars.

Extreme matter meets extreme gravity: Ultraheavy neutron stars with phase transitions

The speed of sound of the matter within neutron stars may contain nonsmooth structure related to first- or higher-order phase transitions. Here we investigate what are the observable consequences of structure in the speed of sound, such as bumps, spikes, step functions, plateaus, and kinks. One of the main consequences is the possibility of ultraheavy neutron stars (with masses larger than 2.5 solar masses), mass twins in heavy (with masses larger than 2 solar masses) and ultraheavy neutron stars. These stars pass all observational and theoretical constraints, including those imposed by recent LIGO/Virgo gravitational-wave observations and NICER x-ray observations. Here we thoroughly investigate other consequences of this structure in the speed of sound to develop an understanding of how nonsmooth features affect astrophysical observables, such as stellar radii, tidal deformability, moment of inertia, and Love number. Our results have important implications for future gravitational wave and x-ray observations of neutron stars and their impact in nuclear astrophysics.

Dynamical ejecta from binary neutron star mergers: Impact of a small residual eccentricity and of the equation of state implementation

Predicting the properties of the matter ejected during and after a neutron star merger is crucial to our ability to use electromagnetic observations of these mergers to constrain the masses of the neutron stars, the equation of state of dense matter, and the role of neutron star mergers in the enrichment of the Universe in heavy elements. Furthermore, our ability to reliably provide such predictions is however limited by a broad range of factors, including the finite resolution of numerical simulations, their treatment of magnetic fields, neutrinos, and neutrino-matter interactions, and the approximate modeling of the equation of state of dense matter. In this manuscript, we study specifically the role that a small residual eccentricity and different implementations of the same equation of state have on the matter ejected during the merger of a 1.3M ⊙ –1.4M ⊙ binary neutron star system. We find that a residual eccentricity e ~ 0.01, as measured ~ 4–6 orbits before merger, causes O(25%–30%) changes in the amount of ejected mass, mainly due to changes in the amount of matter ejected as a result of core bounces during merger. We note that O(1%) residual eccentricities have regularly been used in binary neutron star merger simulations as proxy for circular binaries, potentially creating an additional source of error in predictions for the mass of the dynamical ejecta.

Supernova Axions Convert to Gamma Rays in Magnetic Fields of Progenitor Stars

It has long been established that axions could have been produced within the nascent proto-neutron star formed following the type II supernova SN1987A, escaped the star due to their weak interactions, and then converted to gamma rays in the Galactic magnetic fields; the nonobservation of a gamma-ray flash coincident with the neutrino burst leads to strong constraints on the axion-photon coupling for axion masses m a ≲10 –10 eV. In this Letter, we use SN1987A to constrain higher mass axions, all the way to m a ~10 –3 eV, by accounting for axion production from the Primakoff process, nucleon bremsstrahlung, and pion conversion along with axion-photon conversion on the still-intact magnetic fields of the progenitor star. Moreover, we show that gamma-ray observations of the next Galactic supernova, leveraging the magnetic fields of the progenitor star, could detect quantum chromodynamics axions for masses above roughly 50 μ⁢eV, depending on the supernova. We propose a new full-sky gamma-ray satellite constellation that we call the GALactic AXion Instrument for Supernova (GALAXIS) to search for such future signals along with related signals from extragalactic neutron star mergers.

Binary Stars in Upper Scorpius

To address the statistics of binary stars in the 8 Myr old Upper Scorpius (USco) star formation region, we conducted a speckle interferometric survey of 614 association members more massive than 0.4 M{sub ⊙} (spectral types earlier than M3V) based on the list of Luhman et al. (2018). We resolved 187 pairs, 55 of which are new discoveries. Also using the published data and the Gaia DR2, a catalog of 250 physical binaries was produced. We carefully estimated detection limits for each target and studied binary statistics in the separation range from 0.″06 to 20″ (9–2800 au), as well as clustering at larger separations. The frequency of companions with mass ratios q > 0.3 in this separation range is 0.33 ± 0.04 and 0.35 ± 0.04 for early M- and solar-type stars, respectively, larger by 1.62 ± 0.22 and 1.39 ± 0.18 times compared to field stars of similar masses. The excess is produced mostly by pairs closer than 100 au. At separations from 100 to 10{sup 4} au, the separation distribution and companion fraction resemble those of solar-type stars in the field. However, unlike in the field, we see a relative deficit of equal-mass binaries at separations of ∼500 au, compared to smaller and larger separations. The distribution of q depends on the separation, with a preference of larger q and a larger fraction of twins with q > 0.95 at smaller separations. The binary population of USco differs from binaries in the field in several ways and suggests that binary statistics is not universal.

Optical Linear Polarization toward the Open Star Cluster Casado Alessi 1

We present B-, V-, R-, and I-band linear polarimetric observations of 73 stars in the direction of open star cluster Casado Alessi 1 (hereafter Alessi 1). We aim to use polarimetry as a tool to investigate the properties and distribution of dust grains toward the direction of the cluster. The polarimetric observations were carried out using the ARIES IMaging POLarimeter mounted at the 104 cm telescope of ARIES, Nainital (India). Using the Gaia photometric data the age and distance of the cluster are estimated to be 0.8 ± 0.1 Gyr and 673 ± 98 pc, respectively. A total of 66 stars with a 26′ radius from the cluster are identified as members of the cluster using the astrometric approach. Out of these 66 members, 15 stars were observed polarimetrically and found to have the same value of polarization. The majority of the stars in the region follow the general law of polarization for the interstellar medium, indicating that polarization toward the cluster Alessi 1 is dominated by foreground dust grains. The average values of the maximum polarization (P {sub max}) and the wavelength corresponding to the maximum polarization (λ {sub max}) toward the cluster are found to be 0.83 ± 0.03% and 0.59 ± 0.04 μm, respectively. Also, dust grains toward the cluster appear to be aligned, possibly due to the galactic magnetic field.

Further Investigation on Chromospheric and Prominence Activity of the RS Canum Venaticorum Star SZ Piscium

To continue our study on chromospheric activity and detection for possible prominence events of the very active RS Canum Venaticorum star SZ Piscium (SZ Psc), long-term high-resolution spectroscopic observations were obtained during several observing runs from 2014 to 2018. Based on the spectral subtraction technique, the chromospheric emission of the Ca ii IRT (λ8662, λ8542, and λ8498), H{sub α}, Na i D{sub 1}, D{sub 2} doublet, H{sub β}, and Ca ii H & K lines is mainly associated with the K1 IV primary star of the SZ Psc system, in good agreement with the previous studies, and the F8 V secondary star also shows some chromospheric emission, implying its active chromosphere. Moreover, an optical flare characterized by the He i D{sub 3} line emission together with stronger emission in the other indicators was detected. Furthermore, two chromospheric active longitudes around the two quadratures of the system were identified for most of the time, and the chromospheric activity shows significant changes during a few orbital cycles. The chromospheric activity level seems to show a long-term variation during our observations. There were some excess absorption features in the subtracted H{sub α} line and the other activity indicators, which would be caused by prominence-like materials associated with the K1 IV primary star of the system. Prominence materials could absorb the chromospheric emission and continuum from the K1 IV primary star and even the F8 V secondary one.

Revisiting MOA 2013-BLG-220L: A Solar-type Star with a Cold Super-Jupiter Companion

We present the analysis of high-resolution images of MOA-2013-BLG-220, taken with the Keck adaptive optics system six years after the initial observation, identifying the lens as a solar-type star hosting a super-Jupiter-mass planet. The masses of planets and host stars discovered by microlensing are often not determined from light-curve data, while the star–planet mass ratio and projected separation in units of Einstein ring radius are well measured. High-resolution follow-up observations after the lensing event is complete can resolve the source and lens. This allows direct measurements of flux, and the amplitude and direction of proper motion, giving strong constraints on the system parameters. Due to the high relative proper motion, μ{sub rel,Geo}=12.62±0.11 mas yr{sup −1}, the source and lens were resolved in 2019, with a separation of 77.1 ± 0.5 mas. Thus, we constrain the lens flux to K{sub Keck,lens}=17.92±0.02. By combining constraints from the model and Keck flux, we find the lens mass to be M{sub L}=0.88±0.05 M{sub ⊙} at D{sub L}=6.72±0.59 kpc. With a mass ratio of q=(3.00±0.03)×10{sup −3} the planet’s mass is determined to be M{sub P}=2.74±0.17 M{sub J} at a separation of r{sub ⊥}=3.03±0.27 au. The lens mass is much higher than the prediction made by Bayesian analysis that assumes all stars have an equal probability to host a planet of the measured mass ratio, and suggests that planets with mass ratios of a few times 10{sup −3} are more common orbiting massive stars. This demonstrates the importance of high-resolution follow-up observations for testing theories like these.

Flare Statistics for Young Stars from a Convolutional Neural Network Analysis of TESS Data

All-sky photometric time-series missions have allowed for the monitoring of thousands of young (t age < 800 Myr) stars in order to understand the evolution of stellar activity. In this work, we developed a convolutional neural network (CNN), stella, specifically trained to find flares in Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) short-cadence data. We applied the network to 3200 young stars in order to evaluate flare rates as a function of age and spectral type. The CNN takes a few seconds to identify flares on a single light curve. We also measured rotation periods for 1500 of our targets and find that flares of all amplitudes are present across all spot phases, suggesting high spot coverage across the entire surface. Additionally, flare rates and amplitudes decrease for stars t age > 50 Myr across all temperatures T eff ≥ 4000 K, while stars from 2300 ≤ T eff < 4000 K show no evolution across 800 Myr. Stars of T eff ≤ 4000 K also show higher flare rates and amplitudes across all ages. We investigate the effects of high flare rates on photoevaporative atmospheric mass loss for young planets. In the presence of flares, planets lose 4%–7% more atmosphere over the first 1 Gyr. stella is an open-source Python toolkit hosted on GitHub and PyPI.
