Benchmark Specification of Advanced Burner Test Reactor

As an effort to assess the Argonne Reactor Computation (ARC) suite of fast reactor analysis codes, a numerical benchmark problem was developed using the reference 250 MWt Advanced Burner Test Reactor (ABTR) metallic core fueled with beginning of equilibrium cycle compositions (Chang et al., 2006). Material thermal expansion at operating condition was modeled by adjusting the hexagonal pitch, axial meshes, and the fuel and structure material densities appropriately. Irradiation swelling of metal fuel was considered, and the bond sodium was displaced into the lower part of fission gas plenum.

Specification Document for OC6 Phase II: Verification of an Advanced Soil-Structure Interaction Model for Offshore Wind Turbines

The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) has developed a new macro-element model that accounts for the soil-structure interaction in offshore wind turbines. This development was done as part of the REDWIN (REDucing cost of offshore WINd by integrated structural and geotechnical design) project. The focus of Phase II of the OC6 project was to integrate REDWIN’s new soil-structure modeling capability into the coupled modeling tools that are used to design fixed-bottom offshore wind systems. The integration was then verified through a series of load cases using an example monopile-based offshore wind system examined within the WAS-XL project. This document provides the details needed to model the system examined in OC6 Phase II, using the new REDWIN modeling approach, as well as other standard modeling approaches, including apparent fixity, distributed springs, and coupled springs.

UPC++ v1.0 Specification, Revision 2021.9.0

UPC++ is a C++ library providing classes and functions that support Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) programming. The key communication facilities in UPC++ are one-sided Remote Memory Access (RMA) and Remote Procedure Call (RPC). All communication operations are syntactically explicit and default to non-blocking; asynchrony is managed through the use of futures, promises and continuation callbacks, enabling the programmer to construct a graph of operations to execute asynchronously as high-latency dependencies are satisfied. A global pointer abstraction provides system-wide addressability of shared memory, including host and accelerator memories. The parallelism model is primarily process-based, but the interface is thread-safe and designed to allow efficient and expressive use in multi-threaded applications. The interface is designed for extreme scalability throughout, and deliberately avoids design features that could inhibit scalability.

A-SST Initial Specification

The U.S. Army Research Office (ARO), in partnership with IARPA, are investigating innovative, efficient, and scalable computer architectures that are capable of executing next-generation large scale data-analytic applications. These applications are increasingly sparse, unstructured, non-local, and heterogeneous. Under the Advanced Graphic Intelligence Logical computing Environment (AGILE) program, Performer teams will be asked to design computer architectures to meet the future needs of the DoD and the Intelligence Community (IC). This design effort will require flexible, scalable, and detailed simulation to assess the performance, efficiency, and validity of their designs. To support AGILE, Sandia National Labs will be providing the AGILE-enhanced Structural Simulation Toolkit (A-SST). This toolkit is a computer architecture simulation framework designed to support fast, parallel, and multi-scale simulation of novel architectures. This document describes the A-SST framework, some of its library of simulation models, and how it may be used by AGILE Performers.

System Modeling Frameworks for Wind Turbines and Plants: Review and Requirements Specifications

System modeling frameworks for wind turbines and plants are used by research groups and industry to design wind energy systems that take into account key trade-offs across performance, cost, and reliability at both the turbine and plant level. The frameworks are exercised using a variety of multi-disciplinary design, analysis and optimization (MDAO) methods. To improve inter-operability and foster collaboration, this report proposes a classification system for the frameworks along dimensions of model fidelity and scope. The classification system is first motivated with reviews the state-of-the-art in the development of software frameworks for integrated wind turbine and plant simulation. Within each major wind turbine and power plant subsystem, a matrix is developed for the disciplines used and the fidelity levels with which each discipline can be modeled. The existing frameworks are then classified according to the matrix. Next, an ontology is proposed that will allow for standardizing how data is transferred between the most common discipline-fidelity combinations used in the frameworks. A common representation of data creates the ability to 1) share system descriptions and analysis results, supporting more transparent benchmarks and comparison, and 2) integrate models together into workflows within and across organizations for improving the efficiency and performance of wind turbine and power plant design processes. Ultimately, this integration leads to better overall wind energy system designs with high performance and low costs.

Mechanisms Underlying Plastocyanin-Cytochrome f Electron Transfer Investigated via Site-Specific Linear and Two-dimensional Infrared Spectroscopy

The goal of this research is to further our understanding of biological electron transfer in photosynthesis through the development and application of new methods for studying proteins with high spatial and temporal detail. Biological electron transfer occurs between metal sites imbedded in proteins where the environment and its motions can be very different from those of normal bulk liquids. Moreover, electron transfer between two proteins typically involves short-lived binding interactions within a highly mobile complex. We have directed our studies at photosynthetic electron transfer proteins plastocyanin and cytochrome f. We have labeled two key ligands to the copper ion of plastocyanin with carbon deuterium probe vibrations that enable their selective analysis by infrared spectroscopy. This analysis has shown that association of plastocyanin with cytochrome f leads to large changes in the bonding between the copper ion and ligands. In addition, the probes have been used to assess the contribution of the protein scaffold of plastocyanin in dictating the copper coordination geometry. We also have made progress to extend our experiments from equilibrium to non-equilibrium studies. The studies help to illuminate how proteins are tuned to control biological electron transfer. A better understanding of electron transfer reactions in natural photosynthesis will bolster efforts to develop artificial systems for energy production.

Guidelines and Specifications for Enhanced Durability Evaluation of Insulating Glass and Vacuum Insulating Glass Units

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has conducted research into durability of advanced fenestration technologies for almost thirty years. NREL has recently begun to research potential methods to enhance durability evaluation of present market insulating glass units (IGU). This document outlines a proposed process flow for adoption of these methods by interested parties. The proposed evaluation process flow described below is still a topic of active research at NREL as well as with industry partners. NREL will periodically update this document based on research results, both internal and external to NREL that may inform development of improved durability evaluation. This document is also meant to serve as a guideline for interested parties who may wish to engage in enhanced durability evaluation of IGU's both internally or with external testing laboratories. NREL will work to support adoption of the suggestions in this guideline by interested partners in the hope that these practices are more broadly adopted by the industry. Further research into this area will continue to inform both adaptations of this guideline as well as development of improved durability evaluation standards.
