PR100: Puerto Rico Grid Resilience and Transition to 100% Renewable Energy: Preventing and Responding to Extreme Events

This presentation discusses the aftermath of Hurricane Maria's landfall in Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017. Maria incapacitated Puerto Rico's power systems, leaving the entire island without electricity and access to fresh water. Some parts are still recovering years later. A resilient electric grid is vital to Puerto Rico's security, economy, and way of life.

CO2U Example Report: NETL CO2 to Renewable Diesel and Co-products via Algal Production

This report represents an example of a completed project for the CO2 Utilization program. The LCA for this example corresponds to the example product systems in the NETL openLCA Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) database. This example LCA represents a fictional microalgae-to-biofuel, hereafter called algae-to-biofuel, technology pathway.

Generating Sequential PV Deployment Scenarios for High Renewable Distribution Grid Planning: Preprint

This paper introduces a novel approach for generating solar photovoltaic (PV) plant deployment scenarios for grid integration planning. The approach guarantees consistency among scenarios of the same deployment by ensuring that higher penetration scenarios contain PV units deployed in lower penetration scenarios. It also constrains the size and spatial distribution of the PV plants and considers three placement types. A case study on a real-world distribution system proves that the precepts of scenario consistency, deployment diversity, and placement are met. The study further investigates the impact of the resulting scenarios via a stochastic hosting capacity analysis. Results indicate that the ratio between PV and load sizes, referred to as the nodal PV penetration factor (NPPF), is a key driver of the grid integration impact. By reducing the NPPF from 5 to 2, the maximum hosting capacity increased by at least 112%. The study also reveals that scenarios under random placement can lead to higher hosting capacity values.

Renewable-Storage Hybrids in a Decarbonized Electricity Supply

We explore the potential impacts of growing industry interest in hybrid systems comprising PV and battery technologies on the results and findings of the Solar Futures Study (2021). Through comparison of Solar Futures Study scenarios with and without PV-battery hybrid configurations enabled (in the same grid planning model), we find that the highest net-value hybrid configuration depends strongly on power sector carbon policy, which increases the value of more forward-looking designs. While the availability of PV-battery hybrid configurations primarily displaces standalone PV and battery capacity, we find that it (a) increases solar's share of total capacity and generation and (b) reduces required transmission expansion and associated costs under scenarios that combine aggressive cost reductions and power sector decarbonization policy. Results will also be presented for the complementarity and economic value of wind-PV hybrids with varying amounts of energy storage.

BETO 2021 Peer Review - 1.3.5.270 - Rewiring Algal Carbon Energetics for Renewables (RACER)

Critically needed improvements in biomass and biofuel intermediate productivity can be made by addressing fundamental inefficiencies in algal carbon conversion efficiency (CCE) to biofuel intermediates. Algae photosynthesis is, at best, able to convert 5-7% of incident light energy to biomass, while conversion to fuel intermediates falls 15-25% short of its maximum potential due to inefficiencies along the pathways. Recent progress in the Rewiring Algal Carbon Energetics (RACER) project consortium focused on a means to address the above inefficiencies in a pathway from algal biomass to a trifecta of fuel intermediates, ethanol, 2,3-butane diol, lipids and green biocrude. This project engineered a production-relevant algal species Desmodesmus armatus (SE 00107), to demonstrate biomass productivity improvements, with a doubling of the fuel intermediate yields. The new algae biorefinery paradigm embodied in RACER opens opportunities for algae engineering beyond efforts typically targeted solely at lipid content or improved light harvesting efficiency. Parallel approaches showed improved CCE through elimination of wasted energy during photosynthesis and increased carbon flux to transitory carbohydrate storage in the cells. Outdoor operation and nutrient management strategies with improvements in pretreatment, fermentation and extraction in a Combined Algal Processing approach showed a 40% reduction in MFSP, with a combined biofuel productivity of > 3700 gal/acre.

CSP Optical Facilities at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory

The concentrating Solar Power (CSP) Optical Facilities at NREL comprise unique optical tools and facilities for testing and characterizing concentrating solar optical components. These facilities are maintained to aid researchers and industry efforts to reduce market barriers, improve the performance, reduce the cost, and improve the lifetime and reliability of CSP materials, components, subsystems, and integrated concepts, where accurate and timely characterization methods are needed. To reach this goal, NREL is committed to collaborating in ongoing and projected research needs for industry, academia, and government entities, in the development and characterization of low-cost, high-performance reflector and absorber materials in addition to their components-a key element in the conversion of concentrated sunlight into energy. To accomplish this mission, the core laboratory includes the Advanced Optical Materials Laboratory, indoor and outdoor accelerated weather testing tools, "Distant Observer" for parabolic troughs, the High Flux Solar Furnace, and the ultra-accelerated weather testing tools. This equipment enables to rapidly respond to new challenges with novel solutions that align with the goals of the Solar Energy Technology Office (SETO) at the U.S. Department of Energy. The goal of this paper is to present the state-of art-optical facilities available at NREL that can help support the research needs of the CSP community. Therefore, we review here the different components of the CSP Optical Facilities at NREL and highlight their characteristics and importance for the CSP community.

Urban Combined Heat and Power with Integrated Renewables and Energy Storage

District energy systems efficiently provide thermal energy to multiple buildings and facilities through a network of shared infrastructure. Frequently, district energy systems are centered around combined heat and power (CHP) plants that generate electricity as well as heating and cooling to the local buildings. By providing both electricity and thermal energy from a single fuel source and central location, these systems use less fuel, decrease energy and operational costs, and reduce the need for heating and cooling equipment in individual buildings.
