Small Stirling dynamic isotope power system for multihundred-watt robotic missions

Free Piston Stirling Engine (FPSE) and linear alternator (LA) technology is combined with radioisotope heat sources to produce a compact dynamic isotope power system (DIPS) suitable for multihundred watt space application which appears competitive with advance radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs). The small Stirling DIPS is scalable to multihundred watt power levels or lower. The FPSE/LA is a high efficiency convertor in sizes ranging from tens of kilowatts down to only a few watts. At multihundred watt unit size, the FPSE can be directly integrated with the General Purpose Heat Source (GPHS) via radiative coupling; the resulting dynamic isotope power system has a size and weight that compares favorably with the advanced modular (Mod) RTG, but requires less than a third the amount of isotope fuel. Thus the FPSE extends the high efficiency advantage of dynamic systems into a power range never previously considered competitive for DIPS. This results in lower fuel cost and reduced radiological hazard per delivered electrical watt.

How Improved Forecasting Can Increase the Bulk Power System Value of Price-Responsive Electric Vehicle Managed Charging

Personal light-duty vehicle (LDV) electric vehicle managed charging (EVMC) can reduce power system costs by better aligning electric vehicle (EV) charging with locations and times of low energy cost or infrastructure use. The need to coordinate charging demand across thousands to millions of vehicles while preserving mobility service is a barrier to realizing the value of EVMC. Price-responsive dispatch mechanisms like time-of-use rates (TOU) and hourly real-time prices (RTP) are attractive compared to direct load control (DLC) because they only require one-way communications and local controls. However, increasing participation in price responsive mechanisms can induce costly-to-serve spikes in load and otherwise increase, rather than decrease, production costs. We quantify the ability of improved EVMC forecasting to sustain savings from price responsive mechanisms beyond the limit of 14% of LDVs actively participating observed in previous work. Perfect forecasting of price-responsive EV load makes TOU and RTP value-competitive with a low-error DLC formulation with up to 27% (within-week flexibility) to 45% or more (within-session flexibility) of LDVs participating in EVMC in an envisioned New England power system with 84% clean energy. Additional costs of implementing DLC should be no more than tens of dollars per vehicle-year if DLC is to be value-competitive with accurately forecast price-responsive EVMC for double-digit percentage shares of LDVs participating.

Algorithm development for a spacecraft autonomous power system

Two algorithms were developed to demonstrate the implementation of autonomous functions in an existing spacecraft power system. The functions selected for autonomous operation include a typical performance monitoring function, battery state of charge, and a fault detection and response function represented by a battery state of charge below a preselected limit. The constraints imposed by the existing power system configuration are the available data in the telemetry stream and the existing commands and command structure. The areas requiring future development are the degree of battery characterization, the effects of hardware/software faults, and the verification of faults.

AC power system breadboard

The object of this program was to design, build, test, and deliver a high-frequency (20-kHz) Power System Breadboard which would electrically approximate a pair of dual redundant power channels of an IOC Space Station. This report describes that program, including the technical background, and discusses the results, showing that the major assumptions about the characteristics of this class of hardware (size, mass, efficiency, control, etc.) were substantially correct. This testbed equipment has been completed and delivered to LeRC, where it is operating as a part of the Space Station Power System Test Facility.

Physics-informed graphical neural network for power system state estimation

State estimation is highly critical for accurately observing the dynamic behavior of the power grids and minimizing risks from cyber threats. However, existing state estimation methods encounter challenges in accurately capturing power system dynamics, primarily because of limitations in encoding the grid topology and sparse measurements. Here, this paper proposes a physics-informed graphical learning state estimation method to address these limitations by leveraging both domain physical knowledge and a graph neural network (GNN). We employ a GNN architecture that can handle the graph-structured data of power systems more effectively than traditional data-driven methods. The physics-based knowledge is constructed from the branch current formulation, making the approach adaptable to both transmission and distribution systems. The validation results of three IEEE test systems show that the proposed method can achieve lower mean square error more than 20% than the conventional methods.

Advanced Modular Power System Electronics Enclosure Thermal Testing

An analysis was set up to model the temperature of the advanced modular power system (AMPS) power distribution cards when installed within the electronics enclosure case. The analysis was used to determine the steady-state temperature distribution of the cards within the case. To verify the analysis, an experiment was set up and conducted to simulate the operation of the cards within the enclosure. Four tests were conducted. The tests varied the position of the cold plate and evaluated the use of a thermal compound to reduce the contact resistance between the joints within the thermal path between the cards and the cold plate. Three of the four cases examined showed very good agreement between the analysis and the experiment with a less than 1-percent variation in the predicated temperatures determined through the analysis and the experimentally derived temperatures. In the remaining case, the difference between the analysis and experiment was approximately 12 percent. Both the experiment and analysis showed that the modular power conditioning cards can be maintained within their desired maximum operating temperature range of 40 to 45 °C through thermal conduction to a cold plate when operating with their estimated maximum heat output of 16 W per card.

Cost study of solar cell space power systems

Historical costs for solar cell space power systems were evaluated. The study covered thirteen missions that represented a broad cross section of flight projects over the past decade. Fully burdened costs in terms of 1971 dollars are presented for the system and the solar array. The costs correlate reasonably well with array area and do not increase in proportion to array area. The trends for array costs support the contention that solar cell and module standardization reduce costs.

New options for satellite power systems /SPS/

The operation of a satellite power system (SPS) involves the conversion of solar energy into electrical energy with the aid of facilities carried by a geosynchronous satellite, the transmission of the obtained energy to earth in the form of microwave radio frequency energy, and the conversion of the energy received on earth into dc current for distribution into the network. Attention is given to questions concerning suitable microwave radiation density, details of space transportation for the construction of the SPS, and suitable approaches for the transformation of the solar energy into electric energy. It appears that a Rankine cycle using cesium as the main working fluid and a steam bottoming cycle might have advantages over a Brayton cycle concept considered earlier. In the area of solar photovoltaic concepts GaAlAs cells have advantages over silicon cells related to lighter weight, efficiency, and resistance to space radiation. The required amount of gallium seems to become available.

Control algorithms and computer simulation of a stand-alone photovoltaic village power system

At Stand-Alone Photovoltaic (SAPV) power systems increase in size and load diversity, the design and simulation of control subsystems takes on added importance. These SAPV systems represent 'mini utilities' with commensurate controls requirements, albeit with the added complexity of the energy source (sunlight received) being an uncontrollable variable. This paper briefly describes a stand-alone photovoltaic power/load system computerized simulation model. The model was tested against operational data from the Schuchuli stand-alone village photovoltaic system and has achieved acceptable levels of simulation accuracy. The model can be used to simulate system designs although with probable battery modification.

International Space Power System Interoperability Standards (ISPSIS)

This International Space Power System Interoperability Standards(ISPSIS) is the result of collaborations within the International Space Station (ISS) and Gateway memberships to establish interoperable interfaces, terminology, and techniques, to facilitate collaborative endeavors of space exploration in cislunar and deep space environments. These standards are available for international and commercial partnerships. Standards that are established and internationally recognized have been selected where possible to enable a variety of providers. Increasing hardware commonality among providers while decreasing unique configurations has the potential to reduce the traditional barriers in space exploration: overall mass and volume required to execute a mission. Standardizing interfaces reduces the scope of the development effort. The information within this document represents a set of parameters, which if accommodated in the system architecture support greater efficiencies, promote cost savings, and increase the probability of mission success. These standards are not intended to specify system details needed for implementation nor do they dictate design features behind the interface; specific requirements will be defined in unique documents.
