Tantalum/stainless steel mercury boilers for SNAP 8, evaluating performance
Split nut with internal taper to hold specially formed specimen composed of filaments of refractory material provides means for holding at high temperature and under tension so that performance evaluations may be made.
System for detecting incipient failure in ball bearings is described. Ultrasonic equipment detects bearing system resonance and provides warning signal through electronic circuitry. Detector can be used to evaluate performance of newly installed bearings. Schematic diagram is provided to show components.
The problem of ameliorating the discomfort of passengers on a large air transport subject to flight disturbances is examined. The longitudinal dynamics of the aircraft, including effects of body flexing, are developed in terms of linear, constant coefficient differential equations in state variables. A cost functional, penalizing the rigid body displacements and flexure accelerations over the surface of the aircraft is formulated as a quadratic form. The resulting control problem, to minimize the cost subject to the state equation constraints, is of a class whose solutions are well known. The feedback gains for the optimal controller are calculated digitally, and the resulting autopilot is simulated on an analog computer and its performance evaluated.
The ground tracks and S190 swaths are presented of selected revolutions over areas containing earth resources experiment package (EREP) sites. The following eight EREP disciplines are shown: sensor performance evaluation, forestry, geology, hydrology, land use mapping, oceanography, pollution, and weather. Most of the data reported consists of passes over the continental United States.
The Weld Quality Monitor has provided online control through the application of linear transducers. The electronic systems must be upgraded to increase confidence level required in production. The Weld Quality Monitor has been used with a recent model solid state power supply to evaluate ability to differentiate between sound and defective weld joints. The Weld Quality Monitor has been evaluated on Dumet and Kovar to interconnect materials Nickel and Alloy 180 in weld joints used on microelectronic module fabrication. Distinct separation was achieved between low strength welds and sound welds by the Quality Monitor. Evaluation performed indicates a drift level at less than 2 percent on a series of 50 consecutive welds. Operation under shop conditions identified need for controlled electrode impact. This was achieved with pneumatic actuation.
