Relaxation of the accelerating-gas boundary layer to the test-gas boundary layer on a flat plate in an expansion tube

An analytic investigation of the relaxation of the accelerating-gas boundary layer to the test-gas boundary layer over a flat plate mounted in an expansion tube has been conducted. In this treatment, nitrogen has been considered as the test gas and helium as the accelerating gas. The problem is analyzed in two conically similar limits: (1) when the time lag between the arrival of the shock and the interface at the leading edge of the plate is very large, and (2) when this time lag is negligible. The transient laminar boundary-layer equations of a perfect binary-gas mixture are taken as the flow governing equations. These coupled equations have been solved numerically by Gauss-Seidel line-relaxation method. The results predict the transient behavior as well as the time required for an all-helium accelerating-gas boundary layer to relax to an all-nitrogen boundary layer.

On the breakup of tectonic plates by polar wandering

The equations for the stresses in a homogeneous shell of uniform thickness caused by a shift of the axis of rotation are derived. The magnitude of these stresses reaches a maximum value of the order of 10 to the 9th power dyn/sq cm, which is sufficient for explaining a tectonic breakup. In order to deduce the fracture pattern according to which the breakup of tectonic plates can be expected the theory of plastic deformation of shells is applied. The analysis of this pattern gives an explanation of the existing boundary systems of the major tectonic plates as described by Morgan (1968), LePichon (1968) and Isacks et al. (1968).

Vibration analysis of a completely free elliptical plate

The Ritz method is applied to the variation analysis of a completely free elliptical plate as an efficient alternative to a procedure using a truncated series of regular and modified Mathieu functions. It is shown that a solution as accurate as desired can be obtained with the Ritz method in solving thin plate vibration problems with difficult geometries.

Dynamic analysis of an elastic plate on a thin, elastic foundation

A review, correction, and extension of Vlasov and Leont'ev's (1966) analysis of beams, plates, and shells on elastic foundations is presented, and an improved theory for the motion of an elastic foundation is developed. The interaction of two or more plates resting on a common foundation is included. A simplified model is derived which appears useful for some applications.

Fracture of composite plates containing periodic buffer strips

Fracture of a composite plate which consists of perfectly bonded parallel load carrying laminates and buffer strips is considered. Fatigue cracks appear and spread in main laminates or in buffer strips or in both perpendicular to the interfaces. The external load is applied to the plate parallel to the strips and away from the crack region. The problem is solved for fully imbedded cracks and for broken laminates or strips. Corresponding stress intensity factors are calculated.

Growth defects in thick ion-plated coatings

Industrial ion plating conditions were selected to deposit metallic coatings such as copper, gold, and chromium 2 micrometer thick on metal and glass substrates. The surface finishes of 304 stainless steel, copper, and brass were utilized with mechanically and electrolytically polished surfaces. Nodular growth occurred in these coatings during ion plating as revealed by scanning electron microscopy. Surface irregularities such as scratches, steps, ledges, and so forth are responsible for outward growth, the typical cone type, whereas surface contaminants and loosely settled foreign particles are responsible for lateral growth; namely, the extreme localized surface outgrowths. These defect crystallographic features create porosity in the coatings when subjected to stresses and strains.

Comparison under a simulated sun of two black-nickel-coated flat-plate solar collectors with a nonselective black-paint-coated collector

A performance evaluation was made of two, black nickel coated, flat plate solar collectors. Collector performance was determined under a simulated sun for a wide range of inlet temperatures, including the temperature required for solar powered absorption air conditioning. For a basis of comparison a performance test was made on a traditional, two glass, nonselective, black paint coated, flat plate collector. Performance curves and performance parameters are presented to point out the importance of the design variables which determine an efficient collector. A black nickel coated collector was found to be a good performer at the conditions expected for solar powered absorption air conditioning. This collector attained a thermal efficiency of 50 percent at an inlet temperature of 366 K (200 F) and an incident flux of 946 watts/sq m (300 Btu/hr-sq ft).

Vibration of skewed cantilever plates and helicoidal shells

Theoretical vibration frequencies and mode shapes are obtained for skewed plates and helicoidal shells with a cantilever boundary. Using Hamilton's law of varying action, a power series solution is developed to obtain converged numerical results for the five lowest frequencies. Effects of geometrical variables such as aspect ratio, sweep angle and shell radius to thickness ratio are investigated. Accuracy of the solution method is substantiated by comparison with existing skewed plate spherical cap, and conical shell results.

Finite-element analysis of vibration and flutter of cantilever anisotropic plates

The hybrid stress finite element method is used to study the effects of filament angle and orthotropicity parameter on the vibration and flutter characteristics of cantilevered anisotropic plates. The results indicate a generally strong lack of monotonic dependence on filament angle. Also, the natural frequency in certain cases involving the first few modes, can become relatively insensitive to both filament angle and orthotropicity parameter for a range of filament angle beyond 70 deg. Values of critical dynamic pressure are obtained by a modal approach, in which the mode shapes are obtained by the hybrid stress method. Convergence of the modal method is rather rapid for the configurations analyzed, and a comparison of the method with an exact solution for the case of an isotropic simply supported plate shows that use of six modes gives excellent agreement.

Ultraviolet spectrograph using microchannel plates

An ultraviolet spectrograph was constructed using double microchannel plates as detectors at the focal plane. The photoelectron pulses were located one at a time by measuring the charge division to the ends of a resistor strip behind the microchannel plates. The system worked to 20,000 counts/sec and gave resolution exceeding 100 elements.

Fracture of plates which consist of periodic dissimilar strips

In this paper the fracture problem of a composite plate which consists of perfectly bonded parallel load carrying laminates and buffer strips is considered. It is assumed that the fatigue cracks may appear and spread in main laminates or in buffer strips or in both perpendicular to the interfaces. The external load is applied to the plate parallel to the strips and away from the crack region. The problem is solved for fully imbedded cracks and for broken laminates or strips and the corresponding stress intensity factors are calculated.

Composite propellant combustion modeling with a porous plate burner

A burner is designed to model on a large scale (millimeters) the complex vapor phase processes that take place on awkwardly small scales (about a hundred microns) in the combustion of practical AP/ composite propellants at conventional pressures. Binder vapor evolution is modeled with gaseous fuel (ethane in the experiments reported) flow through a porous plate and oxidizer vapor with the flow of a gaseous oxidizer (air and enriched air in the experiments reported) through discrete holes in the porous plate. Measured flame standoff distance and surface temperature variations are consistent with theoretical predictions at atmospheric pressure. Data obtained at several atmospheres are discussed in the light of the current theories of propellant burning that place varying emphasis on the roles of chemical kinetics and fluid dynamic diffusion/mixing in the vapor phase of a burning composite propellant. The potential and proposed future applications of the burner are indicated.

The new applications of sputtering and ion plating

The potential industrial applications of sputtering and ion plating are strictly governed by the unique features these methods possess. The outstanding features of each method, the resultant coating characteristics and the various sputtering modes and configurations are discussed. New, more complex coatings and deposits can be developed such as graded composition structures (metal-ceramic seals), laminated and dispersion strengthened composites which improve the mechanical properties and high temperature stability. Specific industrial areas where future effort of sputtering and ion plating will concentrate to develop intricate alloy or compound coatings and solve difficult problem areas are discussed.

Symbolic manipulation techniques for vibration analysis of laminated elliptic plates

A computational scheme is presented for the free vibration analysis of laminated composite elliptic plates. The scheme is based on Hamilton's principle, the Rayleigh-Ritz technique and symmetry considerations and is implemented with the aid of the MACSYMA symbolic manipulation system. The MACYSMA system, through differentiation, integration, and simplification of analytic expressions, produces highly-efficient FORTRAN code for the evaluation of the stiffness and mass coefficients. Multiple use is made of this code to obtain not only the frequencies and mode shapes of the plate, but also the derivatives of the frequencies with respect to various material and geometric parameters.

Small deflection of a class of clamped thin plates using collocation

Equations are given for the optimization of a class of two-and three-dimensional structures. The application of existing analytical techniques to the response of thin clamped plates is described. The ratios of deflections to plate thickness are given for uniform transverse loads as well as for uniform plus linearly varying transverse loads. Deflections are presented at angular increments of 5 degrees and at radial increments of 0.1 of the radius.
