Light element ($$Z=1,2$$) production from spontaneous ternary fission of $$^{252}$$Cf

Abstract The yields of light elements ( $$Z=1,2$$ Z = 1 , 2 ) obtained from spontaneous ternary fission of $$^{252}$$ 252 Cf are treated within a nonequilibrium approach, and the contribution of unstable nuclei and excited bound states is taken into account. These light cluster yields may be used to probe dense matter, and to infer in-medium corrections such as Pauli blocking which is determined by the nucleon density. Continuum correlations are calculated from scattering phase shifts using the Beth-Uhlenbeck formula, and the effect of medium modification is estimated. The relevant distribution is reconstructed from the measured yields of isotopes. This describes the state of the nucleon system at scission and cluster formation, using only three Lagrange parameters which are the nonequilibrium counterparts of the temperature and chemical potentials, as defined in thermodynamic equilibrium. We concluded that a simple nuclear statistical equilibrium model neglecting continuum correlations and medium effects is not able to describe the measured distribution of H and He isotopes. Moreover, the freeze-out concept may serve as an important ingredient to the nonequilibrium approach using the relevant statistical operator concept.

Quasi-free scattering in inverse kinematics as a tool to unveil the structure of nuclei: A tribute to Mahir S. Hussein

Abstract Quasi-free scattering of electrons and protons has been extensively utilized in the past to study the single-particle structure of nuclei, clustering in light nuclei, and short-range correlated nucleon–nucleon pairs in nuclei. Recently, this approach has been applied in inverse kinematics using hydrogen targets. The characteristic features of this reaction and the experimental challenges and advantages of inverse-kinematics experiments are summarized. The applicability to radioactive beams opens a large research potential to study a variety of properties of neutron-to-proton asymmetric nuclei. Applications of quasi-free scattering in inverse kinematics and its potential are reviewed based on recent and ongoing research programs at different accelerator facilities worldwide.

In-medium $\Delta (1232)$ potential, pion production in heavy-ion collisions and the symmetry energy

Using the dcQMD transport model, the isoscalar and isovector in-medium potentials of the Δ (1232) baryon are studied and information regarding their effective strength is obtained from a comparison to experimental pion production data in heavy-ion collisions below 800 MeV/nucleon impact energy. The best description is achieved for an isoscalar potential moderately more attractive than the nucleon optical potential and a rather small isoscalar relative effective mass $m$$^{*}_{Δ}$ ≈ 0.45. For the isovector component only a constraint between the potential’s strength at saturation and the isovector effective mass difference can be extracted, which depends on quantities such as the slope of the symmetry energy and the neutron-proton effective mass difference. These results are incompatible with the usual assumption, in transport models, that the Δ (1232) and nucleon potentials are equal. The density dependence of symmetry energy can be studied using the high transverse momentum tail of pion multiplicity ratio spectra. Results are however correlated with the value of neutron-proton effective mass difference. Furthermore, this region of spectra is shown to be affected by uncertain model ingredients such as the pion potential or in-medium correction to inelastic scattering cross-sections at levels smaller than 10%. Extraction of precise constraints for the density dependence of symmetry energy above saturation will require experimental data for pion production in heavy-ion collisions below 800 MeV/nucleon impact energy and experimental values for the high transverse momentum tail of pion multiplicity ratio spectra accurate to better than 5%.

Impact of symmetry energy on sound speed and spinodal decomposition in dense neutron-rich matter

Using a meta model for nuclear Equation of State (EOS) with its parameters constrained by astrophysical observations and terrestrial nuclear experiments, we examine effects of nuclear EOS especially its symmetry energy $E$ sym ($ρ$) term on the speed of sound squared $C$ $^2_s$($ρ$) and the critical density ρt where $C$ $^2_s$($ρ_t$) vanishes (indicating the onset of spinodal decomposition) in both dense neutron-rich nucleonic matter relevant for relativistic heavy-ion collisions and the cold $n$ + $p$ + $e$ + $μ$ matter in neutron stars at $β$- equilibrium. Unlike in nucleonic matter with fixed values of the isospin asymmetry $δ$, in neutron stars with a density dependent isospin profile $δ$($ρ$) determined consistently by the $β$-equilibrium and charge neutrality conditions, the $C$ $^2_s$($ρ$) almost always show a peak and then vanishes at $ρ_t$. Furthermore, the latter strongly depends on the high-density behavior of $E$ sym ($ρ$) if the skewness parameter $J$ 0 characterizing the stiffness of high-density symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) EOS is not too far above its currently known most probable value of about -190 MeV inferred from recent Bayesian analyses of neutron star observables. Moreover, in the case of having a super-soft $E$ sym ($ρ$) that is decreasing with increasing density above about twice the saturation density of nuclear matter, the $ρ$ $t$ is significantly lower than the density where the $E$ sym ($ρ$) vanishes (indicating the onset of isospin-separation instability and pure neutron matter formation) in neutron star cores.

Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov mass models on a 3D mesh: III. From atomic nuclei to neutron stars

Here, we present BSkG3, the latest entry in the Brussels-Skyrme-on-a-grid series of large-scale models of nuclear structure based on an energy density functional. Compared to its predecessors, the new model offers a more realistic description of nucleonic matter at the extreme densities relevant to neutron stars. This achievement is made possible by incorporating a constraint on the infinite nuclear matter properties at high densities in the parameter adjustment, ensuring in this way that the predictions of BSkG3 for the nuclear Equation of State are compatible with the observational evidence for heavy pulsars with M > 2M ⊙ . Instead of the usual phenomenological pairing terms, we also employ a more microscopically founded treatment of nucleon pairing, resulting in extrapolations to high densities that are in line with the predictions of advanced many-body methods and are hence more suited to the study of superfluidity in neutron stars. By adopting an extended form of the Skyrme functional, we are able to reconcile the description of matter at high densities and at saturation density: the new model further refines the description of atomic nuclei offered by its predecessors. A qualitative improvement is our inclusion of ground state reflection asymmetry, in addition to the spontaneous breaking of rotational, axial, and time-reversal symmetry. Quantitatively, the model offers lowered root-mean-square deviations on 2457 masses (0.631 MeV), 810 charge radii (0.0237 fm) and an unmatched accuracy with respect to 45 primary fission barriers of actinide nuclei (0.33 MeV). Reconciling the complexity of neutron stars with those of atomic nuclei establishes BSkG3 as a tool of choice for applications to nuclear structure, the nuclear equation of state and nuclear astrophysics in general.

Tagged deep inelastic scattering measurement on deuterium with the LAD experiment

Here, the origin of the modification of the quark structure of nucleons in the nuclear medium can be tested with tagged recoil nucleon measurements from deep inelastic scattering off electrons on deuterium. The LAD experiment at the Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory (JLab) will measure the modification of the neutron structure function for high-momentum, highly-virtual neutrons by measuring the spectator recoil protons in coincidence with the scattered electron. An update on the experimental setup and projected results is presented. The experiment will collect data in Fall 2024.

Impact of the nuclear equation of state on the formation of twin stars

Twin stars-two stable neutron stars (NSs) with the same mass but different radii have long been proposed to appear as a consequence of a possible first-order phase transition in NS matter. Within a meta-model for the EOS of hybrid stars, we revisit the viability of twin stars and its dependence on numerous parameters characterizing the EOS of nuclear matter, quark matter, and the phase transition between them. While essentially no experimental constraint exists for the last two, parameters characterizing the EOS of neutron-rich nucleonic matter have been constrained within various ranges by terrestrial experiments and astrophysical observations. Within these ranges, the impact of nuclear EOS and crust-core transition density on the formation of twin stars is studied. Here, it is found that the symmetry energy of neutron-rich nucleonic matter notably influences the formation of twin stars, particularly through its slope L and curvature K sym . Conversely, varying the EOS of symmetric nuclear matter within their currently known uncertainty ranges shows minimal influence on the formation of twin stars.

Investigating the p--π ± and p--p--π ± dynamics with femtoscopy in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The interaction between pions and nucleons plays a crucial role in hadron physics. It represents a fundamental building block of the low-energy QCD dynamics and is subject to several resonance excitations. This work studies the p--π ± dynamics using femtoscopic correlations in high-multiplicity pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV measured by ALICE at the LHC. As the final-state interaction between protons and pions is well constrained by scattering experiments and the study of pionic hydrogen, the results give access to information on the particle-emitting source in pp collisions using the femtoscopy methods. The scaling of the source size of primordial protons and pions against their pair transverse mass is extracted. The results are compared with the source sizes studied with p–p, p--K + , and π ± –π ± pairs by ALICE in the same collision system and are found to be in agreement for the different particle pairs. This reinforces recent findings by ALICE of a common emission source for all hadron-pairs in pp collisions at LHC energies. Furthermore, the p--p--π ± systems are studied using three-particle femtoscopy in pp collisions at TeV. The presence of three-body effects is analyzed utilizing the cumulant expansion method. In this formalism, the known two-body interactions are subtracted in order to isolate the three-body effects. For both, p--p--π + and p--p--π – , a non-zero cumulant is found, indicating effects beyond pairwise interactions. These results give information on the coupling of the pion to multiple nucleons.

Electro- and photoproduction of muon pairs with $$\mu $$CLAS12: double deeply virtual compton scattering, timelike compton scattering, and $$J/\psi $$ production

The CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer for operation at 12 GeV (CLAS12) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility has played a central role in advancing the understanding of nucleon and nuclear structure. As increasingly precise data become available, new physics opportunities emerge that extend beyond the current capabilities of CLAS12. In this article, a program to explore the quark and gluon structure of the nucleon through di-muon electro- and photoproduction is presented. Its primary focus is the measurement of beam-spin asymmetries in Double Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering, . By independently varying the incoming and outgoing photon virtualities and momentum transfer, the DDVCS measurement provides access to the Generalized Parton Distributions over their full three-dimensional phase space, extending beyond the kinematic constraints of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and Timelike Compton Scattering. In addition, the large acceptance and high luminosity of the CLAS12 experiment will enable precision measurements of near-threshold production and high-statistics studies of Timelike Compton Scattering.

FLAG Review 2019: Flavour Lattice Averaging Group (FLAG)

Abstract We review lattice results related to pion, kaon, D -meson, B -meson, and nucleon physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the nuclear and particle physics communities. More specifically, we report on the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor $$f_+(0)$$ f + ( 0 ) arising in the semileptonic $$K \rightarrow \pi $$ K → π transition at zero momentum transfer, as well as the decay constant ratio $$f_K/f_\pi $$ f K / f π and its consequences for the CKM matrix elements $$V_{us}$$ V us and $$V_{ud}$$ V ud . Furthermore, we describe the results obtained on the lattice for some of the low-energy constants of $$SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$$ S U ( 2 ) L × S U ( 2 ) R and $$SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R$$ S U ( 3 ) L × S U ( 3 ) R Chiral Perturbation Theory. We review the determination of the $$B_K$$ B K parameter of neutral kaon mixing as well as the additional four B parameters that arise in theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. For the heavy-quark sector, we provide results for $$m_c$$ m c and $$m_b$$ m b as well as those for D - and B -meson decay constants, form factors, and mixing parameters. These are the heavy-quark quantities most relevant for the determination of CKM matrix elements and the global CKM unitarity-triangle fit. We review the status of lattice determinations of the strong coupling constant $$\alpha _s$$ α s . Finally, in this review we have added a new section reviewing results for nucleon matrix elements of the axial, scalar and tensor bilinears, both isovector and flavor diagonal.

Deciphering the mechanism of near-threshold $$J/\psi $$ photoproduction

Abstract The photoproduction of the $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ off the proton is believed to deepen our understanding of various physics issues. On the one hand, it is proposed to provide access to the origin of the proton mass, based on the QCD multipole expansion. On the other hand, it can be employed in a study of pentaquark states. The process is usually assumed to proceed through vector-meson dominance, that is the photon couples to a $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ which rescatters with the proton to give the $$J/\psi p$$ J / ψ p final state. In this paper, we provide a compelling hint for and propose measurements necessary to confirm a novel production mechanism via the $$\varLambda _c \bar{D}^{(*)}$$ Λ c D ¯ ( ∗ ) intermediate states. In particular, there must be cusp structures at the $$\varLambda _c \bar{D}^{(*)}$$ Λ c D ¯ ( ∗ ) thresholds in the energy dependence of the $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ photoproduction cross section. The same mechanism also implies the $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ -nucleon scattering lengths of order 1 mfm. Given this, one expects only a minor contribution of charm quarks to the nucleon mass.

Two-particle correlations in azimuthal angle and pseudorapidity in central $^7\hbox {Be}+{}^9\hbox {Be}$ collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron

A measurement of charged hadron pair correlations in two-dimensional $\Delta \eta \Delta \phi $ space is presented. The analysis is based on total 30 million central Be + Be collisions observed in the NA61/SHINE detector at the CERN SPS for incident beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A, and 150A $\text {Ge} \text {V}/c$. Measurements were carried out for unlike-sign and like-sign charge hadron pairs independently. The $C(\Delta \eta ,\Delta \phi )$ correlation functions were compared with results from a similar analysis on p + p interactions at similar beam momenta per nucleon. General trends of the back-to-back correlations are similar in central Be + Be collisions and p + p interactions, but are suppressed in magnitude due to the increased combinatorial background. Predictions from the Epos and UrQMD models are compared to the measurements. Evolution of an enhancement around $(\Delta \eta ,\Delta \phi ) = (0,0)$ with incident energy is observed in central Be + Be collisions. It is not predicted by both models and almost non-existing in proton–proton collisions at the same momentum per nucleon.

Mixed higher-order anisotropic flow and nonlinear response coefficients of charged particles in $\mathrm {PbPb}$ collisions at $\sqrt{\smash [b]{s_{_{\mathrm {NN}}}}} = 2.76$ and 5.02$\,\text {TeV}$

Anisotropies in the initial energy density distribution of the quark-gluon plasma created in high energy heavy ion collisions lead to anisotropies in the azimuthal distributions of the final-state particles known as collective anisotropic flow. Fourier harmonic decomposition is used to quantify these anisotropies. The higher-order harmonics can be induced by the same order anisotropies (linear response) or by the combined influence of several lower order anisotropies (nonlinear response) in the initial state. The mixed higher-order anisotropic flow and nonlinear response coefficients of charged particles are measured as functions of transverse momentum and centrality in $\mathrm {PbPb}$ collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{\smash [b]{s_{_{\mathrm {NN}}}}} = 2.76$ and 5.02$\,\text {TeV}$ with the CMS detector. The results are compared with viscous hydrodynamic calculations using several different initial conditions, as well as microscopic transport model calculations. None of the models provides a simultaneous description of the mixed higher-order flow harmonics and nonlinear response coefficients.

Evidence of Mass Ordering of Charm and Bottom Quark Energy Loss in Au+Au Collisions at RHIC

Abstract Partons traversing the strongly interacting medium produced in heavy-ion collisions are expected to lose energy depending on their color charge and mass. We measure the nuclear modification factors for charm- and bottom-decay electrons, defined as the ratio of yields, divided by the number of binary nucleon–nucleon collisions, in $$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}=200$$ s NN = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions to p + p collisions ( $$R_{\textrm{AA}}$$ R AA ), or in central to peripheral Au+Au collisions ( $$R_{\textrm{CP}}$$ R CP ). We find the bottom-decay electron $$R_{\textrm{AA}}$$ R AA and $$R_{\textrm{CP}}$$ R CP to be significantly higher than those of charm-decay electrons. Model calculations including mass-dependent parton energy loss in a strongly coupled medium are consistent with the measured data. These observations provide evidence of mass ordering of charm and bottom quark energy loss when traversing through the strongly coupled medium created in heavy-ion collisions.

Multiplicity and rapidity dependence of $\textrm{K}^{*}(\mathrm {{\textbf {892}}})^{0}$ and $\mathrm {\phi ({\textbf {1020}})}$ production in p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} =$ 5.02 TeV

The transverse-momentum (p T ) spectra of K*(892) 0 and Φ(1020) measured with the ALICE detector up to p T = 16 GeV/c in the rapidity range -1.2 < y < 0.3, in p–Pb collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV are presented as a function of charged particle multiplicity and rapidity. The measured p T distributions show a dependence on both multiplicity and rapidity at low p T whereas no significant dependence is observed at high p T . A rapidity dependence is observed in the p T -integrated yield (dN/dy), whereas the mean transverse momentum ($\langle$p T $\rangle$) shows a flat behavior as a function of rapidity. The rapidity asymmetry (Y asym ) at low p T (< 5 GeV/c) is more significant for higher multiplicity classes. At high p T , no significant rapidity asymmetry is observed in any of the multiplicity classes. Both K*(892) 0 and Φ(1020) show similar Y asym . The nuclear modification factor (Q CP ) as a function of p T shows a Cronin-like enhancement at intermediate p T , which is more prominent at higher rapidities (Pb-going direction) and in higher multiplicity classes. At high p T (> 5 GeV/c), the Q CP values are greater than unity and no significant rapidity dependence is observed.

Jet-like correlations with respect to $\textrm{K}^{0}_\mathrm{{S}}$ and $\Lambda $ ($\overline{\Lambda }$) in pp and central Pb–Pb collisions at $\mathbf {\sqrt{s_\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV

Two-particle correlations with $\textrm{K}^{0}_\mathrm{{S}}$, $\Lambda $ /$\overline{\Lambda }$, and charged hadrons as trigger particles in the transverse momentum range 8 < p T,trig < 16 GeV/c , and associated charged particles within 1 < p T,assoc < 8 GeV/c , are studied at midrapidity in pp and central Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision $\mathbf {\sqrt{s_\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. After subtracting the contributions of the flow background, the per-trigger yields are extracted on both the near and away sides, and the ratio in Pb–Pb collisions with respect to pp collisions (I AA ) is computed. The per-trigger yield in Pb–Pb collisions on the away side is strongly suppressed to the level of I AA ≈0.6 for p T,assoc > 3 GeV/c as expected from strong in-medium energy loss, while an enhancement develops at low p T,assoc on both the near and away sides, reaching I AA ≈1.8 and 2.7 respectively. These findings are in good agreement with previous ALICE measurements from two-particle correlations triggered by neutral pions (π 0 –h) and charged hadrons (h–h) in Pb–Pb collisions at $\mathbf {\sqrt{s_\textrm{NN}}} = 2.76$ TeV. Moreover, the correlations with $\textrm{K}^{0}_\mathrm{{S}}$ mesons and $\Lambda $ /$\overline{\Lambda }$ baryons as trigger particles are compared to those of inclusive charged hadrons. The results are compared with the predictions of Monte Carlo models.

Open charm production and asymmetry in p Ne collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle {\textrm{NN}}}}$ = 68.5 GeV

A measurement of D 0 meson production by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target configuration is presented. The production of D 0 mesons is studied with a beam of 2.5 TeV protons colliding on a gaseous neon target at rest, corresponding to a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 68.5 GeV. The sum of the D 0 and $\overline{D}$ 0 production cross-section in pNe collisions in the centre-of-mass rapidity range y* ϵ [-2.29,0] is found to be $σ^{y* ϵ [-2.29,0]}_{D^0}$ = 48.2 ± 0.3 ± 4.5 μb/nucleon where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The D 0 and $\overline{D}$ 0 production asymmetry is also evaluated and suggests a trend towards negative values at large negative y*. The considered models do not account precisely for all the features observed in the LHCb data, but theoretical predictions including 1% intrinsic charm and 10% recombination contributions better describe the data than the other models considered.
