Extension of three-dimensional computer-graphics studies of orientation-dependent forces to multiple reflection behavior in dipole-dipole collisions. The collision pairs DCl-DCl and HCl-HCl are studied for rotational temperatures of 25, 77, and 300 K and translational temperatures of 77 and 300 K. The probability of a multiple reflection collision is a very sensitive inverse function of hard-core reflection distance for fixed temperatures. A brief comparison of the results is made with two-dimensional results of Clarke and Smith (1970) for CHF3-CHF3.

Knowledge of the total gamma ray production rate per H atom from the decay of pion(0) produced in interstellar cosmic ray interactions is essential for determining the possible amount of interstellar H2. This production rate is recalculated using the latest accelerator data on pion(0) production in pp interactions up to approximately 300 GeV. A simple but accurate approximation resolves the past disagreement over the magnitude of this rate. An upper limit is obtained of (1.51 + or - 0.23) x 10 to the minus 25th power/sec. consistent with the observed upper limit of 1.6 x 10 to the minus 25th power/sec.
Data obtained with the quadrupole mass spectrometer aboard the OGO 6 satellite show the effects of significant surface interaction processes, including nearly complete recombination of incoming atomic oxygen on the walls of the instrument antechamber plus absorption and desorption of oxygen and carbon monoxide. The observed data are fit by solving the time-dependent continuity equations accounting for production and loss of atomic oxygen, molecular oxygen, and (in the case of mass 28) carbon monoxide. The surface parameters that best fit the data are selected and applied to the determination of ambient densities and their estimated errors.
The architectural and man-machine aspects of a shuttle orbiter crew compartment were examined. All phases of the Orbiter's flight mode from launch through zero gravity, reentry, and ferry flight are considered. The data provides an initial design criteria that treats the crew compartment as a total system and provides data that has a direct contribution to the development of flight hardware. Primary interest was centered on the design of the galley, hygiene facility, passenger couches, airlock, work station, and flight deck access. The man-machine interface emphasis was placed on identifying and developing solutions for problems in mobility/restraint, ingress/egress, accessibility, and volume utilization.

A review is given of the quiet time couplings which exist between the magnetosphere and the thermosphere. Joule heating arising from aurorae and the combination of Joule heating and ion drag arising from magnetospheric convection normally provide as much energy to the thermosphere as solar ultraviolet radiation. Ion drag is especially important for establishing wind systems in the thermosphere. Using the qualitative ideas of convective electric fields, a description of a possible model of the global wind system is given. It is pointed out that the existence of a convectively driven wind source at high latitudes consistent with magnetospheric convection leads to the possibility of a mean easterly wind, i.e., super-rotation.

Several interesting phenomena relating to the equatorial ionosphere have been observed in the data from the OGO-6 mass spectrometer. The diurnal variations during equinox at an altitude of 450 km show the N2 and O densities peaking near 1500 hr while He peaks near 1000 hr. The latitudinal variation in N2 during the day is very similar to the F-region electron density exhibiting the well known features of the ionospheric anomaly. During periods of intense geomagnetic disturbance (e.g. the large storm of 8 March 1970), the low latitude thermospheric temperature increases on the order of 50-150 K, while at mid latitudes, increases of more than 1000 K are observed.

Particular attention is given to models of the upper atmosphere that deal with the diurnal variation and the latitudinal density dependence. The upper atmosphere is considered as essentially an ideal gas, or rather a weakly ionized plasma, where physical and chemical processes of considerable complexity take place. The final goal for the theoretical models of the upper atmosphere is to derive the time and space dependence of the physical quantities density, composition, temperature, pressure, and state of motion by theoretical considerations from basic physical assumptions. Questions of the dynamics of the upper atmosphere are discussed together with one- and two-dimensional models of the upper atmosphere, three-dimensional models, the geomagnetic effect, and the semiannual density variation.
