First-order antiferromagnetic transitions of SrMn 2 P 2 and CaMn 2 P 2 single crystals containing corrugated-honeycomb Mn sublattices

Significance With rare exceptions, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition in zero magnetic field is thermodynamically of second order where the thermal-average magnetic moments of the magnetic atoms (ordered moments) vary continuously on cooling through the AFM ordering temperature T N with no latent heat at the transition. Such materials include the AFM pnictides CaMn 2 As 2 , SrMn 2 As 2 , CaMn 2 Sb 2 , SrMn 2 Sb 2 , and CaMn 2 Bi 2 . Here we demonstrate that the closely related SrMn 2 P 2 and CaMn 2 P 2 insulators instead exhibit first-order AFM transitions at T N = 53 and 70 K, respectively, where the heat capacity exhibits a latent heat at T N . The mechanism causing these first-order transitions remains to be explained, but its understanding may lead to the development of novel magnetic materials of technological interest.

Formation of Complex Spin Textures in Thermally Demagnetized La 0.7 Sr 0.3 Mn O 3 Artificial-Spin-Ice Structures

Artificial spin ices (ASIs) have traditionally been designed such that each nanomagnet possesses a single-domain magnetic configuration that is assumed to be minimally perturbed by interisland dipolar interactions. Using x-ray photoemission electron microscopy to perform magnetic domain imaging, we study thermally demagnetized La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 -based brickwork ASI arrays and showed that complex spin textures (CSTs) can be stabilized through an appropriate selection of nanoisland width and interisland spacing. While the width dependence can be explained through the dominance of shape anisotropy in isolated nanoislands, the ASIs we investigate demonstrate a complex dependence on both the nanoisland width and interisland spacing. Micromagnetic simulations reveal that interisland dipolar interactions play a role in the formation of CSTs, which are composed of single- and double-vortex states. Furthermore, energy analysis of the simulations provides an understanding of the system energetics that arises from a delicate balance between intraisland effects (i.e., shape anisotropy and exchange energy) and interisland effects (i.e., dipolar interactions between nearest-neighbor nanoislands).

Realizing gapped surface states in the magnetic topological insulator Mn Bi 2 - x Sb x Te 4

The interplay between magnetism and nontrivial topology in magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) is expected to give rise to exotic topological quantum phenomena like the quantum anomalous Hall effect and the topological axion states. A key to assessing these novel properties is to realize gapped topological surface sates. MnBi 2 Te 4 possesses nontrivial band topology with an intrinsic antiferromagnetic state. However, the highly electron-doped nature of the MnBi 2 Te 4 crystals obstructs the exhibition of the surface band gap. Here, we tailor the material through Sb substitution to reveal the gapped surface states in MnBi 2-x Sb x Te 4 . By shifting the Fermi level into the bulk band gap, we access the surface states and show a band gap of 50 meV at the Dirac point from quasiparticle interference measured by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Surface-dominant conduction is confirmed through transport spectroscopy measured by multiprobe STM below the Néel temperature. The surface band gap is robust against the out-of-plane magnetic field despite the promotion of field-induced ferromagnetism. Finally, the realization of bulk-insulating MTIs with the large exchange gap offers a promising platform for exploring emergent topological phenomena.

Electron correlations in the cubic paramagnetic perovskite Sr ( V , Mn ) O 3 : Results from fully self-consistent self-energy embedding calculations

In this study, we use the thermodynamically consistent and conserving self-energy embedding theory (SEET) to study the spectra of the prototypical undistorted cubic perovskites SrVO 3 and SrMnO 3 . In the strongly correlated metallic SrVO 3 we find that the usual attribution of the satellite peaks at –1.8 eV to Hund or Hubbard physics in the t 2 g orbitals is inconsistent with our calculations. In the strongly correlated insulator SrMnO 3 we recover insulating behavior due to a feedback effect between the strongly correlated orbitals and the weakly correlated environment. Our calculation shows a systematic convergence of spectral features as the space of strongly correlated orbitals is enlarged, paving the way to a systematic parameter-free study of correlated perovskites.

Magnetism and magnetotransport in the kagome antiferromagnet Mn 3 Ge

We perform classical Monte Carlo and stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert simulations to study the temperature-dependent magnetism of the kagome antiferromagnet Weyl metal Mn3Ge, and we find that a long-range chiral order sets in at a transition temperature well below the Neel temperature (T N ). Based on the crystalline symmetries imposed by the chiral magnetic order, we argue for the presence of multiple isoenergetic Weyl nodes (nodes that are at the same energy and with a congruent Fermi surface around them) near the chemical potential. Using the semiclassical Boltzmann equations, we show that the combined contribution to the net longitudinal magnetoconductance (LMC) and the planar Hall conductance (PHC) from tilted Weyl nodes can lead to signatures that are qualitatively distinct from that of a single pair of Weyl nodes. In particular, we show that magnetic orders with different chiralities can give rise to different periods in LMC and PHC as a function of the in-plane magnetic field direction. As a result, this is ultimately related to differences in the symmetry-imposed constraints on the Weyl nodes.

Rare Earth Engineering in R Mn 6 Sn 6 ( R = Gd–Tm, Lu) Topological Kagome Magnets

Exploration of the topological quantum materials with electron correlation is at the frontier of physics, as the strong interaction may give rise to new topological phases and transitions. Here we report that a family of kagome magnets RMn 6 Sn 6 manifest the quantum transport properties analogical to those in the quantum-limit Chern magnet TbMn 6 Sn 6 . The topological transport in the family, including quantum oscillations with nontrivial Berry phase and large anomalous Hall effect arising from Berry curvature field, points to the existence of Chern gapped Dirac fermions. Furthermore, our observation demonstrates a close relationship between rare-earth magnetism and topological electron structure, indicating the rare-earth elements can effectively engineer the Chern quantum phase in kagome magnets.
