Comparison of thermionic filament and carbon nanotube field emitter-based electron ionization sources in cycloidal coded aperture mass analyzers

This report compares the coded aperture imaging performance of thermionic filament and carbon nanotube (CNT) field emitter-based electron sources in cycloidal-coded aperture mass spectrometers. The use of spatially coded apertures in mass spectrometry enables miniaturization by improving throughput without sacrificing resolution. CNT-based electron ionization sources for mass spectrometers provide several potential benefits over conventional thermionic emitters, including low voltage and low power consumption, room temperature operation, long lifetime, and ability to emit electrons in a pulsed mode. However, spatiotemporal variation in electron emission from CNTs is a major disadvantage. In this study, electron emission stability and spatiotemporal stability of the coded aperture image were compared for coded aperture cycloidal mass analyzers with either a CNT-based ion source or a thermionic filament-based ion source. We found that the thermionic filament-based ion source produced a significantly more stable coded aperture image than the CNT based ion source. The aperture image fluctuations in the CNT-based source are likely a result of adsorption and desorption of molecules on the CNT surface that cause local work function changes and induce spatiotemporal variation in electron emission and subsequent ion generation.

Measurement of partial vapor pressures of salt mixtures via combined horizontal transpiration and thermogravimetric analysis

A method combining thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and horizontal transpiration with elemental analysis via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry or ion chromatography enabled calculation of partial pressures of individual salts in molten mixtures. TGA quantified total mass loss, while transpiration identified vapor-phase composition. Furthermore, two chloride (NaCl-MgCl 2 , NaCl-MgCl 2 + UCl 3 ) salts and one mixed halide (LiCl-LiF + Li 2 O) salt were analyzed at 750 °C and 550 °C, respectively. NaCl and MgCl 2 vapor pressures were 2.19–2.61 × 10 -4 atm and 2.47–2.48 × 10 -5 atm (dependent upon the identity of the invesitgated mixture); UCl 3 was 1.42 × 10 -7 atm. LiCl and LiF vapor pressures at 550 °C were 1.53 × 10 -6 and 6.32 × 10 -6 atm, respectively. Additionally, the TGA method was validated against values from the literature for unary LiCl and LiF.

Durability of Highly Active PGM Catalyst MEA Tested Via Nitrogen and Air AST Cycling Under HDV Condition

PEMFCs are widely considered as the most promising power sources, particularly for heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs). Unfortunately, the degradation of MEAs under HDV condition remains insufficiently studied. In this work, we systematically investigated two MEAs with catalysts of Pt nanoparticles (NPs) supported over high surface area carbon black. These MEAs were tested for durability under HDV condition in nitrogen using a DOE AST protocol for 180,000 cycles, which is equivalent to 30,000 hours or 1 million miles of operation. The commercial Catalyst MEA also underwent 6,000 AST cycles in air under M2FCT condition. We comprehensively investigated the degradation of catalysts. Our results indicate that both MEAs undergo continuous performance degradation in H 2 /air and H 2 /O 2 during the AST cycling in nitrogen, where analysis employing scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) reveal significant degradation behavior for Pt catalysts. The MEA exhibits more significant degradation, especially within mass transfer region, during the AST process in air. In conclusion, this study describes the long-term degradation behavior and mechanism with AST cycling in nitrogen or air governing highly efficient and durable PGM-catalyst MEA design under HDV conditions.

Investigation of pyruvic acid photolysis at the air-liquid interface as a source of aqueous secondary organic aerosols

Pyruvic acid (PA) is a ubiquitous 2-oxocarboxylic acid in the atmosphere. Its photochemical process at the air-liquid (a-l) interface has been suggested as an important source of aqueous secondary organic aerosols. Here, we investigated the photochemical reaction pathways of PA at the a-l interface using synchrotron-based vacuum ultraviolet single-photon ionization mass spectrometry (VUV SPI-MS) coupled with the System for Analysis at the Liquid Vacuum Interface (SALVI) microreactor. Results from mass spectral analysis and the determination of appearance energies (AEs) indicate that photolysis of PA can generate radicals, then they recombine with carboxylic acids and simple molecular oligomers. Furthermore, the preliminary products could form larger oligomers via radical reaction or esterification in the presence of hydroxyl and carboxyl functional groups. Mass spectral comparison shows that most photochemical reactions would complete within 4 h. The expanded photochemistry-driven reaction flowchart of PA is proposed based on the newly discovered products. Our results reveal that the interfacial PA photochemical reactions have different mechanisms from the bulk liquid due to the interfacial properties, such as molecular density, composition, and ion concentration. Our findings show that in situ mass spectral analysis with bright photon ionization is useful to elucidate the contribution of a-l interfacial reactions leading to aqSOA formation.

LANL-UW Collaboration on LC-QTOF Datasets (Annual Report)

Prior to the application of non-targeted chemometric techniques (i.e., Fisher ratio analysis), pre-processing steps must be carried out on the data collected using liquid chromatography-quadrupole time of flight (LC-QTOF) mass spectrometry. Data compression is the most important pre-processing step due to the vast number of high-resolution mass channels (m/z; 0.0001 Da) collected. Our first approach was to bin the mass spectral dimension to 0.01 Da; however, this approach was computationally expensive and did not preserve the high-resolution data.

Melting LHC detectors: a novel search for stopped long-lived particles

Particles at the TeV scale with lifetimes of a year or longer could have been abundantly produced at the LHC yet escaped detection because of backgrounds, and could still be trapped within detector materials. With gluinos in split-supersymmetry as a working example, we show that these trapped particles can be recovered from detector materials once prepared in liquid form, for example, by melting silicon detectors, extracting liquid argon from the electromagnetic calorimeter, or constructing a large water pool near ATLAS or CMS. These liquid samples can then be processed using iterative centrifugation followed by mass spectrometry, enabling single-particle sensitivity in macroscopic samples. This method can potentially discover gluinos up to 3 TeV in mass at the HL-LHC. It can also improve upon existing limits for other long-lived particles. For example, it can discover the stop up to 2 TeV, and will also be sensitive to integer-charged particles in the TeV range.

Ion Mobility Spectrometry Characterization of the Intermediate Hydrogen-Containing Gold Cluster Au7(PPh3)7H52+

We employ ion mobility spectrometry and density functional theory to determine the structure of Au7(PPh3)7H52+ (PPh3 = triphenylphosphine) which was recently identified by high mass resolution mass spectrometry. Experimental ion-neutral collision cross sections represent the momentum transfer between the ionic clusters and gas molecules averaged over the relative thermal velocities of the colliding pair, thereby providing structural insights. Theoretical calculations indicate the geometry of Au7(PPh3)7H52+ is similar to Au7(PPh3)7+, with three hydrogen atoms bridging two gold atoms and two hydrogen atoms forming single Au–H bonds. Collision induced dissociation products observed during IMS experiments reveal that smaller hydrogen containing clusters may be produced through fragmentation of Au7(PPh3)7H52+. Our findings indicate that hydrogen containing species like Au7(PPh3)7H52+ act as intermediates in the formation of larger phosphine ligated gold clusters. These results advance the understanding and ability to control the mechanisms of size selective cluster formation which is necessary for scalable synthesis of clusters with tailored properties. Uranium Processing Signatures for Nuclear Forensics (NA22 End of FY23 Report)

A vacuum induction melting (VIM) furnace was used to produce an ~120 kg depleted uranium (DU) rod in November 2021 from well characterized feedstock to investigate the separation of thorium (Th) and protactinium (Pa) from uranium (U) during U metal casting and quantify the behavior of the 230 Th/ 234 U and 231 Pa/ 235 U radiochronometry systems. This work suggested that while 234 Th, measured by gamma spectrometry, appears to segregate to the top and surface of the rod, the concentration of 230 Th determined by isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) in drill turnings from multiple locations in the rod, including the hot top, is relatively consistent. To evaluate whether Th is potentially enriched at only the very outer surface of the cast DU rod relative to the bulk material in the cast rod, thin surface samples were collected from the cast DU rod. Locations sampled included the inner diameter (ID) and outer diameter (OD) of the bottom of the casting and the ID, OD, and top face of the hot top (very top of the casting). The locations are shown in Figure 1. Four samples were taken from each location at different depths in the cast material. Each cut took approximately 0.03 – 0.05” off of the casting.

Correlation of optical properties with particle size, morphology, and polymorph of fine- and nano-particle formulations of titanium dioxide powders

Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) particulates are known to exhibit different visible and infrared optical properties compared to the bulk material, showing strong dependence on particle size, crystal structure, and morphology. In this study, the optical properties, sizes, and morphologies of TiO 2 particles from two different sources (nano and fine powders) having a) nominally different particle sizes and b) various crystal polymorph mixture fractions are compared using a combination of single particle mass spectrometry, optical spectroscopies, and aerosol characterization methods. The nano sample was found to be largely particles of the anatase polymorph (88% by mass), while the fine sample was found to consist largely of rutile particles (95% by mass). Two distinct particle morphologies (fractal and compact) were found in each powder sample and could be identified and separated in-situ based on particle aerodynamic properties. The attenuation of near-infrared, visible and ultraviolet light by TiO 2 particles shows strong dependence on particle morphology. Furthermore, while the fine particles were found to have larger near-infrared (675–800 nm) extinction coefficients by mass than the nanoparticles, the reverse was true in the ultraviolet and visible regions (370–675 nm). However, for polydisperse particles with different sizes and shapes, the optical behaviors are not straightforward to directly correlate to a combination of physical parameters.

Historic climate, cosmogenic 10Be, denudation-rate, and geospatial datasets from the Pikes Peak region, Colorado, USA

This data package contains geographic information system (GIS) layers and tabular datasets associated with the study of elevation-dependent denudation rates on Pikes Peak in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado, USA. The package includes GIS layers used to produce the study-area map, including sample locations, sample watershed boundaries, the Pikes Peak batholith, Pleistocene glacier extent, weather station locations, and elevation and hillshade rasters, together with comma-separated value (CSV) tables and matching CSV data dictionaries. These mapped layers provide the geographic framework for interpreting denudation patterns across the Pikes Peak region and for relating sample locations to watershed geometry, bedrock setting, glacial history, and nearby climate stations. The first group of tables reports climate and geospatial context for the study area. These files include station-based temperature and precipitation data used to characterize elevational gradients in mean annual climate and monthly climate seasonality, sample locations, denudation-rate and topographic metrics, fixed frost-cracking model parameters, frost-cracking intensity and precipitation-frequency metrics, and stream-power inversion results. Together, these data provide the basis for evaluating how denudation varies with elevation, climate, and landscape form across sampled catchments on Pikes Peak. The second group of tables reports cosmogenic nuclide and erosion-model results used in the denudation analysis. Included files contain accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) measurements for in situ-produced cosmogenic beryllium-10 (10Be), including sample identifiers, measured 10Be:9Be ratios, analytical uncertainties, carrier mass, quartz mass, blank corrections, blank-group statistics, and calculated 10Be concentrations and uncertainties. Additional tables summarize stream-power-law inversion results for sampled catchments, including optimized model parameters, predicted erosion rates, residual metrics, channel-pixel counts, and convergence status, as well as regression equations and summary statistics used to evaluate relationships among elevation, climate, frost cracking, precipitation forcing, and denudation rate. The package contains GIS files, comma-separated value files (.csv), Microsoft Excel files (.xlsx), CSV data dictionaries, a file-level metadata table, and a readme text file.

Modular multi-interface nanocrystals for enhanced ethanol oxidation electrocatalysis

Electrochemical processes that utilize biomass-derived ethanol as a source of electrons and protons offer a sustainable energy strategy, yet their practical implementation is limited by sluggish ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) kinetics and catalyst poisoning. Here, in this study, we report a modular multi-interface nanocrystal catalyst comprising core/shell Co 2 P/Pd and Pd-Au heterostructured interfaces that exhibit complementary functions for the enhanced EOR catalysis. The Co 2 P/Pd interface boosts Pd atom utilization and lowers the kinetic barriers for ethanol-to-acetate conversion, while the Pd-Au interface effectively alleviates CO poisoning caused by C–C bond cleavage of ethanol. In-depth analyses using in situ attenuated total reflectance-surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy, differential electrochemical mass spectrometry, and density functional theory calculations elucidate the mechanistic roles of these interfaces. The optimized Co 2 P/Pd-Au 0.08 nanorods achieve an excellent mass activity, underscoring the potential of modular, multi-interface nanocrystals for advancing EOR catalysis and offering a generalizable strategy for broader catalytic innovations.

Heterologous synthesis of a simplified nitrogenase analog in Escherichia coli

The heterologous synthesis of a nitrogen-fixing system in a non-diazotrophic organism is a long-sought-after goal because of the crucial importance of nitrogenase for agronomy, energy, and the environment. Here, we report the heterologous synthesis of a two-component nitrogenase analog fromAzotobacter vinelandii, which consists of the reductase component (NifH) and the cofactor maturase (NifEN), inEscherichia coli. Metal, electron paramagnetic resonance, and activity analyses verify the cluster composition and functional competence of the heterologously expressed NifH and NifEN. Nuclear magnetic resonance, nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry, and growth experiments further illustrate the ability of the NifH/NifEN system to reduce N 2 and incorporate the reduced N into the cellular mass. These results establish NifEN/NifH as a simplified nitrogenase analog that could be optimized and engineered to facilitate transgenic expression and biotechnological adaptations of this important metalloenzyme.

Toward Revealing Microcystin Distribution in Mouse Liver Tissue Using MALDI-MS Imaging

Cyanotoxins can be found in water and air during cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs) in lakes and rivers. Therefore, it is very important to monitor their potential uptake by animals and humans as well as their health effects and distribution in affected organs. Herein, the distribution of hepatotoxic peptide microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is investigated in liver tissues of mice gavaged with this most common MC congener. Preliminary matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) imaging experiments performed using a non-automated MALDI matrix deposition device and a MALDI-time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer yielded ambiguous results in terms of MC-LR distribution in liver samples obtained from MC-LR-gavaged mice. The tissue preparation for MALDI-MS imaging was improved by using an automated sprayer for matrix deposition, and liver sections were imaged using an Nd:YAG MALDI laser coupled to a 15 Tesla Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR)-mass spectrometer. MALDI-FT-ICR-MS imaging provided unambiguous detection of protonated MC-LR (calculated m/z 995.5560, z = +1) and the sodium adduct of MC-LR (m/z 1017.5380, z = +1) in liver sections from gavaged mice with great mass accuracy and ultra-high mass resolution. Since both covalently bound and free MC-LR can be found in liver of mice exposed to this toxin, the present results indicate that the distribution of free microcystins in tissue sections from affected organs, such as liver, can be monitored with high-resolution MALDI-MS imaging.

First Application of Mass Measurements with the Rare-RI Ring Reveals the Solar r -Process Abundance Trend at A = 122 and A = 123

The Rare-RI Ring (R3) is a recently commissioned cyclotronlike storage ring mass spectrometer dedicated to mass measurements of exotic nuclei far from stability at Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) in RIKEN. The first application of mass measurement using the R3 mass spectrometer at RIBF is reported. Rare isotopes produced at RIBF— 127 Sn, 126 In, 125 Cd, 124 Ag, 123 Pd—were injected in R3. Masses of 126 In, 125 Cd, and 123 Pd were measured whereby the mass uncertainty of 123 Pd was improved. This is the first reported measurement with a new storage ring mass spectrometry technique realized at a heavy-ion cyclotron and employing individual injection of the preidentified rare nuclei. The latter is essential for the future mass measurements of the rarest isotopes produced at RIBF. The impact of the new 123 Pd result on the solar r-process abundances in a neutron star merger event is investigated by performing reaction network calculations of 20 trajectories with varying electron fraction Y e . It is found that the neutron capture cross section on 123 Pd increases by a factor of 2.2 and β-delayed neutron emission probability, P 1n , of 123 Rh increases by 14%. The neutron capture cross section on 122 Pd decreases by a factor of 2.6 leading to pileup of material at A = 122, thus reproducing the trend of the solar r-process abundances. The trend of the two-neutron separation energies (S 2n ) was investigated for the Pd isotopic chain. The new mass measurement with improved uncertainty excludes large changes of the S 2n value at N = 77. Finally, such large increase of the S 2n values before N = 82 was proposed as an alternative to the quenching of the N = 82 shell gap to reproduce r-process abundances in the mass region of A = 112 – 124.

Multi-modal chemical characterization of highly viscous submicrometer organic particles

Distinguishing highly viscous organic particles within complex mixtures of atmospheric aerosol and accurate descriptions of their composition, size distributions, and mixing states are challenges at the forefront of aerosol measurement science and technology. Here, we present results obtained from complementary single-particle measurement techniques employed for the in-depth characterization of highly viscous particles. In this study, we demonstrate advantages and synergy of this multi-modal particle characterization approach based on the analysis of individual viscous particles formed in the air-discharged waste produced by a common sewer pipe rehabilitation technology. Using oil immersion flow microscopy, we investigate particle size distributions and morphology of colloidal components present in field-collected aqueous waste condensates. We compare these results with corresponding measurements of viscous particles formed in drying droplets of the aerosolized discharged waste. The colloidal components and viscous particles were found to be approximately 10 µm and 0.5 µm, respectively. The aerosolized viscous particles exhibited a spherical morphology, while the colloidal particles appeared noticeably fractal, resembling fragments of a cured composite material. Chemical imaging of the viscous particles collected on substrates was performed using scanning electron microscopy and soft X-ray spectro-microscopy techniques. Through these methods, comprehensive description of these particles emerged, confirming their high solid-like viscosity, wide-ranging sizes, diverse carbon speciation with high degrees of oxygenation, and high organic volume fractions. The aerosolized viscous particles were further characterized using high-throughput single particle mass spectrometry. This technique provides real-time measurements of composition, size, and morphological metrics for large numbers of individual particles, enabling the identification of their distinct mass spectrometric signatures.

Fragmentation Dynamics of Fluorene Explored Using Ultrafast XUV-Vis Pump-Probe Spectroscopy

We report on the use of extreme ultraviolet (XUV, 30.3 nm) radiation from the Free-electron LASer in Hamburg (FLASH) and visible (Vis, 405 nm) photons from an optical laser to investigate the relaxation and fragmentation dynamics of fluorene ions. The ultrashort laser pulses allow to resolve the molecular processes occurring on the femtosecond timescales. Fluorene is a prototypical small polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH). Through their infrared emission signature, PAHs have been shown to be ubiquitous in the universe, and they are assumed to play an important role in the chemistry of the interstellar medium. Our experiments track the ionization and dissociative ionization products of fluorene through time-of-flight mass spectrometry and velocity-map imaging. Multiple processes involved in the formation of each of the fragment ions are disentangled through analysis of the ion images. The relaxation lifetimes of the excited fluorene monocation and dication obtained through the fragment formation channels are reported to be in the range of a few tens of femtoseconds to a few picoseconds.

Large-Scale Interlaboratory DI-FT-ICR MS Comparability Study Employing Various Systems

We report ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry (UHR-MS) coupled with direct infusion (DI) electrospray ionization offers a fast solution for accurate untargeted profiling. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometers have been shown to produce a wealth of insights into complex chemical systems because they enable unambiguous molecular formula assignment even if the vast majority of signals is of unknown identity. Inter-laboratory comparisons are required to apply this type of instrumentation in quality control (for food industry or pharmaceutics), large-scale environmental studies or clinical diagnostics. Extended comparisons employing different FT-ICR MS instruments with qualitative direct infusion analysis are scarce since the majority of detected compounds cannot be quantified. The extent to which observations can be reproduced by different laboratories remains unknown. We set up a preliminary study which encompassed a set of seventeen laboratories around the globe, diverse in instrumental characteristics and applications, to analyze the same sets of extracts from commercially available standard human blood plasma and Standard Reference Material (SRM) for blood plasma (SRM1950), which were delivered at different dilutions or spiked with different concentrations of pesticides. The aim of this study was to assess the extent to which the outputs of differently tuned FTICR mass spectrometers, with different technical specifications, are comparable for setting the frames of a future DI-FT-ICR MS ring trial. We concluded that a cluster of five laboratories, with diverse instrumental characteristics showed comparable and representative performance across all experiments, setting a reference to be used in a future ring trial on blood plasma.
