LAW Glass Formulation to Support Melter Runs with Simulants

The major objective of this work was to prepare and characterize glass formulations in order to develop and select formulations that are compliant with contractual and processing requirements to support melter tests with each of the LAW Sub-Envelopes. Glasses that cover composition ranges of interest were prepared and characterized to ensure that selected glass compositions can tolerate expected composition variations resulting from process errors without adversely affecting processing characteristics or product quality. Glass compositions that are expected to result during transitions from one waste stream to another were also prepared and characterized. Other objectives of the work included preparation and characterization of glasses with respect to the properties of interest, optimization of sulfate loading in the glasses, evaluation of ability to achieve waste loading limits, testing to demonstrate compatibility of glass melts with melter materials of construction, and identification of glass formulation issues with respect to contract specifications and processing requirements.

Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations of biaxial-strain-tuned superconductors in pulsed magnetic field up to 60 T

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have gained increasing prominence not only in fundamental research but also in daily applications. However, to fully harness their potential, it is crucial to optimize their properties with an external parameter and track the electronic structure simultaneously. Magnetotransport over a wide magnetic field range is a powerful method to probe the electronic structure and, for metallic 2D materials, quantum oscillations superimposed on the transport signals encode Fermi surface parameters. In this manuscript, we utilize biaxial strain as an external tuning parameter and investigate the effects of strain on the electronic properties of two quasi-2D superconductors, MoTe 2 and RbV 3 Sb 5 , by measuring their magnetoresistance in pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T. With a careful selection of insulating substrates, we demonstrate the possibility of both the compressive and tensile biaxial strains imposed on MoTe 2 and RbV 3 Sb 5 , respectively. For both systems, the applied strain has led to superconducting critical temperature enhancement compared to their free-standing counterparts, proving the effectiveness of this biaxial strain method at cryogenic temperatures. Clear quantum oscillations in the magnetoresistance—the Shubnikov–de Haas (SdH) effect—are obtained in both samples. In strained MoTe 2 , the magnetoresistance exhibits a nearly quadratic dependence on the magnetic field and remains non-saturating even at the highest field, whereas in strained RbV 3 Sb 5 , two SdH frequencies showed a substantial enhancement in effective mass values, hinting at a possible enhancement of charge fluctuations. Our results demonstrate that combining biaxial strain and pulsed magnetic field paves the way for studying 2D materials under unprecedented conditions.

DuraMelter 100 Sub-Envelope Changeover Testing Using LAW SubEnvelopes A1 and C1 Feeds in Support of the LAW Pilot Melter (Final Report)

The primary goal of the testing described in this report was to develop and recommend a compliant HLW glass formulation to support the actual waste testing of AZ-101 Envelope D waste (blended with actual pretreatment products including Cs- and Tc-eluates from pretreatment of AP-101 and AZ-101 LAW). Testing of actual waste will be performed at Battelle, Pacific Northwest Division. The test objective was met by the development and recommendation of the glass formulation HLW98-95; the formulation has been transmitted to the WTP to support vitrification of HLW AZ-101 actual waste.

Understanding Decision-Relevant Regional Data Products: Workshop Report

A broad community of climate adaptation practitioners, stakeholders and policymakers rely on historical reconstructions and future projections of local to regional climate. To be of value to these users, climate data must be credible, salient, and authoritative (Cash et al. 2002). Namely, data must be consistent with our physical understanding of the global Earth system, must be relevant for informing the decision-making process, and must be backed by expert judgment. As more and more data products have become available, multiple challenges have emerged around the production, evaluation, selection, and use of these data products. Consequently, to ensure crucial decisions leverage the best possible historical and future physical climate data, there is a pressing need to develop a coordinated national climate data strategy that is inclusive of all relevant communities of practice.

3 He Separation from US Liquid Natural Gas-Derived 4 He (Final Report)

This final report summarizes the technical and economic feasibility study conducted by Interlune, Lisbon Group, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory on separating 3 He from 4 He derived from liquid natural gas (LNG) using magnetocaloric liquefaction (MCL), superleak heat-flush, and fractional distillation techniques. The project aims to address the growing shortage of 3 He, a critical resource for quantum computing and national security, by exploring a new domestic source, the bulk helium supply.

Efficient learning of t -doped stabilizer states with single-copy measurements

One of the primary objectives in the field of quantum state learning is to develop algorithms that are time-efficient for learning states generated from quantum circuits. Earlier investigations have demonstrated time-efficient algorithms for states generated from Clifford circuits with at most log ⁡ ( n ) non-Clifford gates. However, these algorithms necessitate multi-copy measurements, posing implementation challenges in the near term due to the requisite quantum memory. On the contrary, using solely single-qubit measurements in the computational basis is insufficient in learning even the output distribution of a Clifford circuit with one additional T gate under reasonable post-quantum cryptographic assumptions. In this work, we introduce an efficient quantum algorithm that employs only nonadaptive single-copy measurement to learn states produced by Clifford circuits with a maximum of O ( log ⁡ n ) non-Clifford gates, filling a gap between the previous positive and negative results.

TARP Identifying Critical Thresholds for Acute Response of Plants and Ecosystems to Water Stress at Walker Branch Watershed, 2002-2005

This dataset contains data from a manipulative field study aimed at identifying critical thresholds for acute response of plants and ecosystems to water stress (TARP) that took place at Walker Branch Watershed in Oak Ridge, Tennessee from 2002-2005 (2002-06-20 to 2005-12-16). The study used understory tents for the removal of 100% of the growing-season throughfall and stem flow, to provide data on the impact of acute drought on mechanisms responsible for growth and mortality of deciduous forest canopy trees representative of common plant functional types (Liriodendron and Quercus). Through three years of manipulation (2003, 2004 and 2005; pretreatment measurements in 2002) various measures of tree response to surface moisture deficits were recorded including root and leaf traits, plant nonstructural carbohydrates status, hourly sapflow, basal area, and periodic observations of foliar photosynthesis and conductance. Additionally, environmental data such as air and soil temperature, soil water content, and soil matric potential were recorded. This dataset contains data 16 files in comma-separate (*.csv) format. Additional metadata are provided: 16 data dictionaries and a file-level metadata file in comma separate (*.csv) format and a user guide in PDF (*.pdf) format.
