The solar spectrum from 1173 to 1324 A

We present some of the results of a rocket flight which obtained a high-resolution stigmatic spectrum of the sun in the region 1173-1324 A. A list of 179 lines observed in this region is presented, with intensities, widths, and approximate excitation classes for each line. A reproduction and finding chart of the spectrum is included, along with discussion of some individual lines of special interest.

FOS spectroscopy of resolved structure in the nucleus of NGC 1068

The results of FOS spectroscopy of the continuum peak of NGC 1068 in the wavelength range 2200-7000 A are reported. Detailed analysis reveals the emission lines to be complex in shape and to consist of a number of different velocity components. Both the Balmer lines and the strong forbidden lines have a contribution from a component with full width at half-maximum on the order of 2200 km/s. However, the broad H-beta emission observed in polarized light is not detected. This implies that the continuum peak is not the mirror which reflects light from the hidden Seyfert I nucleus. It could possibly contribute some of the reflected light, but the equivalent width of the H-beta BLR line, if present at all, is much weaker than expected from the ground-based nuclear polarized-flux spectrum.

Plasma environment effects on K lines of astrophysical interest IV. IPs, K thresholds, radiative rates, and Auger widths in Fe ii–Fe viii

Aims. Within the framework of compact-object accretion disks, we calculate plasma environment e ects on the atomic structure and decay parameters used in the modeling of K lines in lowly charged iron ions, namely Fe ii–Fe viii. Methods. For this study, we used the fully relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac–Fock method approximating the plasma electron–nucleus and electron-electron screenings with a time-averaged Debye-Hückel potential. Results. We report modified ionization potentials, K-threshold energies, wavelengths, radiative emission rates, and Auger widths for plasmas characterized by electron temperatures and densities in the ranges 10(exp 5)-10(exp 7) K and 10(exp 18)-10(exp 22) per cu.cm. In addition, we propose two universal fitting formulae to predict the IP and K-threshold lowerings in any elemental ion. Conclusions. We conclude that the high-resolution X-ray spectrometers onboard the future XRISM and ATHENA space missions will be able to detect the lowering of the K edges of these Fe ions due to the extreme plasma conditions occurring in the accretion disks around compact objects.

Formation of the 0.511 MeV line in solar flares

The slowing down and annihilation of positrons and the formation of positronium in a solar flare plasma are investigated to determine how the width of the 0.511-MeV line and its strength relative to the three-photon continuum from positronium decay depend on the temperature and density of the medium in which the positron comes to rest. The calculations are limited to the cases of annihilation in a completely ionized plasma, in a partially ionized plasma with an electron/neutron density ratio of 1.0 or 0.1, and in an atomic gas with a very small ion density. Thermally averaged rate coefficients are obtained for the free annihilation of positrons and for positronium formation through radiative recombination in the fully ionized plasma. Positronium formation rates and the resultant energy distributions of the positronium atoms in the partially ionized medium are determined by numerically solving the Fokker-Planck equation in a medium where the ambient free electrons have a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution of finite temperature but the density of the medium is sufficiently low that positronium atoms decay without further collisions following their formation. A Monte Carlo calculation is performed for the positron energy loss, positronium formation through charge exchange, and positronium breakup in the weakly ionized medium. The energy distributions of decaying positronium atoms and the relative number of triplet to singlet positronium decays are evaluated for ion concentrations and densities characteristic of the solar photosphere.

Stark broadening of high-principal-quantum-number n-alpha lines of hydrogen.

High n-alpha lines (transitions n + 1 to n) with quantum numbers n between 50 and 250 have been observed emanating from galactic H II regions where the electron density and temperature are about 1000/cu cm and 1 eV, respectively. High n-alpha lines have not previously been seen in the laboratory where fairly homogeneous plasmas may be produced and relatively precise measurements of electron densities and temperatures can be made. The present work describes experiments where the first members of the hydrogen line series with lower states n = 10, 11, 12, and 13 have been detected in a laboratory plasma. The width of the 12-alpha line at 88.7 microns could be measured and was consistent with calculated broadening from elastic electron collisions and quasi-static ion effects.

Spectroscopic CCD surveys for quasars at large redshift. II - A Pfuei transit survey

A CCD transit survey has been carried out with the 200 in. telescope of a strip of sky 5 arcmin wide and 9 hr long. Direct images and slitless spectra of over 43,000 objects were obtained on two successive nights. An automatic search for emission lines of given minimum equivalent width and signal-to-noise ratio yielded 52 candidate sources. Slit spectra revealed that 24 were emission-line galaxies with z less than 0.4 and eight were quasars with 2 between 1.00 and 2.76. The number of quasars detect agrees with that predicted from luminosity function models for z less than 2.9. The models also indicate that between 30 and 62 quasars with z less than 2.9 should have been found in this survey, but none were detected. This result reconfirms that there is a redshift cutoff near or below redshift three. The apparent conflict of this measurement with the known existence of dozens of quasars with redshifts larger than three is discussed.

Evidence for coronal turbulence in a quiescent active region

The first evidence for nonthermal broadening of X-ray lines in a quiescent active region was based on a single observation of a limb active region by the Flat Crystal Spectrometer (FCS) on the SMM satellite, reported by Acton et al. (1981). With the renewal of SMM operations, the FCS has been used to further investigate this phenomenon. On April 28, 1984 a map of Mg XI resonance line profiles was made for a bright area in NOAA Active Region 4474 during a nonflaring period. The narrowest line profiles are consistent with the nominal instrumental width plus a thermal width equivalent to about 3 million K, the temperature derived from line ratios of O VIII, Ne IX, and Mg XI. The broadest line profiles are consistent with the instrumental width plus a thermal width equivalent to about 7 million K, but a substantial amount of plasma at this temperature would result in much greater flux in the FCS higher-temperature channels than was seen. If the excess width is attributed solely to plasma turbulence, the corresponding velocity would be about 40 + or - 10 km/s.

Ageing and quenching through the ageing diagram: predictions from simulations and observational constraints

We study recent changes on the star-formation history (SFH) of galaxies by means of the ageing diagram (AD), tracing the fraction of stars formed during the last ∼20 Myr through the equivalent width of the Hα line and ∼1−3 Gyr through the dust-corrected optical colour ( g − r ) 0 or the Balmer break. We provide a physical characterization by using Pipe3Destimates of the SFH of Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area and Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory galaxies, in combination with the predictions from IllustrisTNG-100. Our results show that the AD may be divided into four domains that correlate with the stellar mass fractions formed in the last 20 Myr and 3 Gyr: ageing systems, whose star formation rate changes on scales of several Gyr, account for 70-80 per cent of the galaxy population. Objects whose SFH was abruptly truncated in the last ∼1 Gyr arrange along a detached quenched sequence that represents ∼5 - 10 per cent by (volume-corrected) number for 10 9 < M * /M ⊙ < 10 12 . Undetermined systems represent an intermediate population between the ageing and quenched regimes. Finally, Retired galaxies, dominated by old stellar populations, are located at the region in the AD where the ageing and quenched sequences converge. Defining different star formation activity levels in terms of the birth rate parameter $b\equiv \frac{SFR}{\langle SFR \rangle }$, we find that galaxies transit from the ageing to quenched sequences on scales ∼500 Myr. We conclude that the AD provides a useful tool to discern recently quenched galaxies from the dominant ageing population.

The spectra of IceCube Neutrino (SIN) candidate sources – III. Optical spectroscopy and source characterization of the full sample

A correlation between astrophysical high-energy neutrinos and blazars has been suggested by various authors. In particular, a likely association between IceCube events and intermediate- and high-energy peaked BL Lac objects has led to a sample of 47 objects having a high probability of being neutrino sources. In the first paper of this series we reported optical spectroscopy of 17 objects, which together with data taken from the literature covered 80 per cent of the sample. Here, we present spectroscopy obtained at large aperture telescopes of a further 17 objects (plus four additional targets), which completes the sample coverage. For 12 objects we are able to determine the redshift (0.07 < z < 1.6), while for the others we set a lower limit on it, based on either the robust detection of intervening absorption systems or on an estimation derived from the absence of spectral signatures of the host galaxy. With these new data we expand and reinforce the main results of our previous papers, namely the fact that in terms of their broad-band properties our sources appear to be indistinguishable from the rest of the blazar population and the relatively large (>34 per cent and possibly as high as 80 per cent) fraction of masquerading BL Lac objects, for which the low equivalent width of the emission lines is due to the brightness of the boosted continuum, rather than being an intrinsic property, in our sample.

Thermal and kinematic properties of ejecta in SN1987A revealed by XRISM

We present an analysis of high-resolution spectra from the shock-heated plasmas in SN 1987A, based on an observation using the Resolve instrument onboard the X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM). The 1.7–10 keV Resolve spectra are accurately represented by a single-component, plane-parallel shock plasma model, with a temperature of $2.84_{-0.08}^{+0.09}$ keV and an ionization parameter of $2.64_{-0.45}^{+0.58}$ × $10^{11}\,\,{\rm s\,\, cm}^{-3}$. The Resolve spectra are also well reproduced by the 3D magneto-hydrodynamic simulation presented by Orlando et al. (2020, A&A, 636, A22) suggesting substantial contribution from the ejecta. The metal abundances obtained with Resolve align with the Large Magellanic Cloud value, indicating that the X-rays in 2024 originate from “non-metal-rich” shock-heated ejecta and the reverse shock has not reached the inner metal-rich region of ejecta. Doppler widths of the atomic lines from Si, S, and Fe correspond to velocities of 1500–1700 km s$^{-1}$, where the thermal broadening effects in this non-metal-rich plasma are negligible. Therefore, the line broadening seen in Resolve spectra is determined by the large bulk motion of ejecta. For reference, we determined a $90\%$ upper limit on non-thermal emission from a pulsar wind nebula at $4.3 \times 10^{-13}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the 2–10 keV range, aligning with NuSTAR findings by Greco et al. (2022, ApJ, 931, 132). Additionally, we searched for the $^{44}$Sc K line feature and found a $1\sigma$ upper limit of $1.0 \times 10^{-6}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, which translates to an initial $^{44}$Ti mass of approximately $2 \times 10^{-4}\, M_{\odot }$, consistent with previous X-ray to soft gamma-ray observations (Boggs et al. 2015, Science, 348, 670; Grebenev et al. 2012, Nature, 490, 373; Leising 2006, ApJ, 651, 1019).

From pole parameters to line shapes and branching ratios

Abstract Resonances are uniquely characterized by their complex pole locations and the corresponding residues. In practice, however, resonances are typically identified experimentally as structures in invariant mass distributions, with branching fractions of resonances determined as ratios of count rates. To make contact between these quantities it is necessary to connect line shapes and resonance parameters. In this work we propose such a connection and illustrate the formalism with detailed studies of the $$\rho (770)$$ ρ ( 770 ) and $$f_0(500)$$ f 0 ( 500 ) resonances. Based on the line shapes inferred from the resonance parameters along these lines, expressions for partial widths and branching ratios are derived and compared to other approaches in the literature.

The Population of H ii Regions in NGC 7020

The galaxy NGC 7020 displays an exotic hexagonal ringlike central structure with conspicuous ansae located at two opposite vertices and a tenuous external ring populated by H ii regions. Inside and around the hexagonal structure, Hα emission is also present at the inner disk. To characterize the population of the H ii regions, as well as their ionizing clusters, we imaged NGC 7020 with narrowband Hα and nearby continuum filters attached to GMOS-S installed on the Gemini South telescope. We found 202 H ii regions or complexes of H ii regions evenly distributed between the outer ring and the central disk The nucleus and ansae also present Hα emission. The equivalent width of the Hα line (W {sub Hα}) is systematically greater at the regions of the outer ring relative to those of the inner disk. We discuss the influence of the metallicity gradient of the disk and the upper limit of the masses of the initial mass function on W {sub Hα}, and we conclude that the data are still consistent with the occurrence of a younger burst of H ii region formation in the outer ring. The central regions present more massive clusters, M ≥ 10{sup 6} M {sub ⊙}, than those of the outer ring (M ≤ 10{sup 6} M {sub ⊙}). Three clusters within 5″ of the nucleus present masses higher than 10{sup 8} M {sub ⊙}. The presence of diffuse Hα emission in the inner 5″ suggests gas flows in the nuclear region.

CLASSY IV. Exploring UV Diagnostics of the Interstellar Medium in Local High- z Analogs at the Dawn of the JWST Era

The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) Legacy Archive Spectroscopic SurveY (CLASSY) provides the first high resolution spectral catalog of 45 local high-z analogs in the ultraviolet (UV; 1200–2000 Å) to investigate their stellar and gas properties. Here we present a toolkit of UV interstellar medium (ISM) diagnostics, analyzing the main emission lines of CLASSY spectra (N IV] λλ1483,87, C IV λλ1548,51, He IIλ1640, O III]λλ1661,6, Si III] λλ1883,92, C III] λ1907,9). Specifically, our aim is to provide accurate diagnostics for the reddening E(B - V), electron density n e , electron temperature T e , metallicity 12+log(O/H), and ionization parameter log(U), taking the different ISM ionization zones into account. We calibrate our UV toolkit using well-known optical diagnostics, analyzing archival optical spectra for all CLASSY targets. We find that UV density diagnostics estimate n e values that are ~1–2 dex higher (e.g., n e (C III] λλ1907,9) ~ 10 4 cm -3 ) than those inferred from their optical counterparts (e.g., n e ([S II]λλ6717,31) ~ 10 2 cm -3 ; n e ([Ar IV]λλ4714,41) ~ 10 3 cm -3 ). T e derived from the hybrid ratio [O III] λ1666/λ5007 proves to be reliable, implying differences in determining 12+log(O/H) compared to the optical counterpart O III] λ4363/[O III] λ5007 within ~ ±0.3 dex. We also investigate the relation between the stellar and gas E(B - V), finding consistent values at high specific star formation rates (sSFRs; log sSFR ≳ -8 yr -1 ), while at low sSFRs we confirmed an excess of dust attenuation in the gas. Finally, we investigate UV line ratios and equivalent widths to provide correlations with 12+log (O/H) and log(U), but note that there are degeneracies between the two. With this suite of UV-based diagnostics, we illustrate the pivotal role CLASSY plays in understanding the chemical and physical properties of high-z systems that JWST can observe in the rest-frame UV.
