ELM-Wet: Inclusion of a wetland landunit with sub-grid representation of eco-hydrological patches and hydrological forcing in E3SM Land Model (ELM)

Wetlands emit the most biogenic methane (CH4) and present the greatest uncertainty in the global CH4 budget. Modeling these emissions is challenging due to the temporal and spatial variability in wetland structure and CH4 flux rates, along with complex interactions among hydrological, ecological, meteorological, and microbial processes that govern CH4 dynamics. To address these issues, we aim to enhance the accuracy of wetland representation in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) Land Model, ELM. This effort led to the development of ELM-Wet, which incorporates a dedicated wetland landunit with subgrid representation of eco-hydrological patch types. We implement wetland-specific hydrology by imposing site-specific constraints on surface water levels, thereby allowing different patches to sustain varying depths of inundation. Additionally, we refined the calculation of aerenchyma transport diffusivity based on observed conductance across different vegetation types. We validated these enhancements through site-specific simulations of a coastal freshwater wetland, the Salvador WMA Freshwater Marsh (Ameriflux, site ID US-LA2), located in the coast of Louisiana (29.85N,90.29W) at an elevation of 0 m. The site was simulated with ELM-Wet and the default version ELMv1. We use Bayesian Optimization to parameterize CO2 and CH4 fluxes. Eddy covariance observations of CO2 and CH4 fluxes from 2012-2013 were used to train the model and data from 2021 were used for validation. In this repository, we include all the output of all the simulations performed using different versions of ELMv1 and ELM-Wet, all input required to the model, and the Matlab scripts we used to processed the output data. ELM-Wet_flmd.csv includes a detailed description of the datasets files.

Forcing data (CESM2/CMIP6) for projection of drought impacts (2015-2100) at the K34 site in Manaus, Brazil

Historical and projected output data variables extracted and derived from Community Earth System Model 2 (CESM2) runs from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) archive. CESM2 is a fully coupled Earth system model used in simulations of Earth's past, present, and future climates (Danabasoglu et al., 2020). Variables in this dataset are in six-hourly resolution, and include air temperature (both in K and ℃), specific humidity (kg kg-1), air pressure (Pa), relative humidity (%), and vapor pressure deficit (kPa). CESM2 was the only CMIP6 model that provided VPD at the high temporal resolution required for this analysis. Data are included in .csv files, and the text file CESM2-CMIP6_forcing_K34-Manaus_headers.txt provides descriptions of data file headers.

News and Notes: SSA Task Force on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Toward a Changing, Inclusive Future in Earthquake Science

In the United States, a wide variety of studies show that the geoscience community does not reflect the broader societal makeup (e.g., Velasco and Jaurrieta de Velasco, 2010; Dutt, 2020; Howley, 2020). In fact, only about 10% of all Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) Ph.D. degrees are awarded to people of color, although they represent more than a third of the population (Dutt, 2020). These numbers have changed little over the past 40 years (e.g., Bernard and Cooperdock, 2018; Dutt, 2020). Recent events in the United States have again raised awareness of this discrepancy in many fields; similar divergences may be present throughout the world. How this discrepancy represents a tremendous loss of talent and contributes to ongoing bias and racism is discussed.

AI for Extreme Volcanic Climate Forcing and Feedback Forecasting in the 21st century

Our paradigm-shifting framework will apply machine learning and perform physical analysis of contemporary volcanoes to develop sound forecasts of extreme eruptions in the 21stcentury and their abrupt drying and cooling impacts on the warming climate. We will also bridge climate data driven regression models and earth system model output to trace teleconnections that exacerbate regional impacts such as Arctic amplification and western US droughts.

Task Force Report: ESR Linear Lattice Design

A new layout and optics for the Electron Storage Ring (ESR) have been produced with revised spin rotators in IRs 6 and 8, a redesign of IR10, and a new geometric layout for the ring. In this report, the efforts to produce this lattice are documented, including the motivation for design decisions. This new lattice, version 5.5, will be used as the baseline for future studies.

Computing of Fluidic Forces in Rotating Cylinders with Application to Active Magnetic Bearing Control

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has been engaged to develop molten salt technologies. Molten salts are chemically aggressive liquids that operate at high temperatures. As part of this activity, ORNL designed a molten salt pump for molten salt that has no seals and that operates immersed in the salt. To minimize wear on rotating components, the pump uses active magnetic bearings (AMBs) to support the shaft and rotor. The pump is centrifugal and is oriented horizontally (A. Melin, 2013).

Climate Forcing & Feedbacks by Fires, Forests, Fossil Energy & Food Production: Observations are Key to Predictions [Slides]

Human emitted GHGs (long lived, cumulative) that trap more heat (IR) and aerosols (short lived, steady) that reflect sunlight (Vis) have altered Earth’s radiation budget and warmed our climate measurably and predictably. Our complex dynamic climate system has trapped 400 ZettaJ (10 21 ) and has many positive feedbacks. Regions are changing at unprecedented rates and crossing thresholds as BAU will lock us into 8.5 W m -2 in 2100.
