System safety education focused on system management

System safety is defined and characteristics of the system are outlined. Some of the principle characteristics include role of humans in hazard analysis, clear language for input and output, system interdependence, self containment, and parallel analysis of elements.

A focusing collector for long wavelength X-ray astronomy.

Rocket studies of the low-energy X-ray sky conducted so far suffer from serious experimental problems. Therefore, an apparatus was design ed to overcome the outstanding experimental problems. The instrument developed was successfully flown in an Aerobee-170 rocket. The new device utilizes a grazing incidence paraboloid as an energy concentrator and low-pass filter. The effective bandpass of the instrument from 100 to 280 eV is determined by the combination of the counter window transmission and the mirror reflectivity.

A magnetically focused image tube employing an opaque photocathode

Image converter has been developed which uses opaque photocathode for improved efficiency. Device is easier to fabricate than previous semi-transparent photocathode converters and uses compounds from Groups 3-5 that are responsive to wave-lengths between ultraviolet (approximately 100 nm) and near infrared region (approximately 1000 nm).

A comparison of a coaxial focused laser Doppler system in atmospheric measurements

Measurements of atmospheric velocities and turbulence with the laser Doppler system were obtained, and the results compared with cup anemometer and hot-wire measurements in the same wind field. The laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) is described along with the test procedures. It was found that mean values determined from the LDV data are within 5% of other anemometer data for long time periods, and the LDV measures higher velocities.

The Origin of Intermediate and Deep Focus Earthquakes

An elastic plate model is used to describe the origin of intermediate and deep earthquakes. It is shown that the earth is covered by about eight tectonic plates that have relative motions; along plate boundary lines, one plate thrusting under the other, causes deflection and buckling of the elastic plate structure in regions of maximum curvature that may trigger earthquakes.

Studies of shock focusing and nonlinear resonance in shock tubes

Some current problems in noise pollution which involve the dynamics of weak shock waves can be succesfully investigated using shock tubes and shock-tube techniques. Two examples presently under study are discussed; in one case the experiments are carried out in a large, conventional shock tube originally designed for studies of rarefied gasdynamics, while in the other case the experimental facility is a less conventional 'repeating' shock tube.

Distortion in a full-scale bicone inlet with internal focused compression and 45 percent internal contraction

The distortion characteristics were investigated at the subsonic diffuser exit of a full-scale, Mach 2.5, axisymmetric, mixed compression inlet. Performance and steady-state distortion characteristics were obtained at zero and maximum angle of attack and during an inlet unstart-restart sequence. For the configuration with no cowl bleed, steady-state distortion P(max)P(min)P(bar) ranged from 0.10 for critical inlet operation at 0 deg angle-of-attack to 0.306 for supercritical inlet operation at 6.84 deg angle-of-attack. Vortex generators provided a 50 percent reduction in steady-state distortion for critical operation. Bleed has a smaller effect on steady-stated distortion.

Multiplate focusing collimator

An appartus is described for scanning relatively small near sources of penetrating radiation to obtain the energy distribution thereof, wherein a collimator assembly is interposed between a radiation source and a radiation detector. The collimator assembly has a plurality of plates aligned in parallel planes with respect to a common axis normal to their centers. All the plates have similar random distribution of apertures. All apertures on each plate are the same size. The size of respective plates, the size of the apertures of said respective plates, and the spacing between said respective plates vary precisely according to a predetermined ratio to produce radiation channels which converge to a focal point. The radiation incident to the radiation detector is maximized when the focal point and the radiation source are co-incident.

Ion acceleration in a plasma focus

The electric and magnetic fields associated with anomalous diffusion to the axis of a linear plasma discharge are used to compute representative ion trajectories. Substantial axial acceleration of the ions is demonstrated.

One-dimensional focusing X-ray telescope for stellar X-ray astronomy

A one-dimensional X-ray telescope of the Kirkpatrick-Baez design is described. The instrument consists of a grazing-incidence X-ray telescope and a multiwire proportional counter. The optics were provided with a gold reflecting surface to yield an energy response from below 0.25 to above 4.0 keV. The angular resolution of the system is 6 min by 9.5 deg over a 1.1 deg by 9.5 deg field of view.

Double-focusing mass spectrometer

Device uses lighter, easily alined, magnet assembly to provide field required to interact with ion beam. It has no separate duct; instead, evacuated duct is formed by pole pieces which support vacuum pump. Magnetic gap and magnet assembly are reduced from 4.64 to 2.54 mm and from 2.4 to 1.5 kg, respectively.
