A 20-kW DC Oak Ridge Converter with Integrated AC & DC Sources for Grid Services and Energy Storage Systems

This paper proposes a wireless power transfer (WPT) platform with integrated energy conversion that has the capability for 1) recharging the energy storage systems (ESSs) from the grid systems, including renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, etc., 2) off grid systems recharging the ESSs from dc grid systems, 3) grid recharging of electric vehicles (EVs), and 4) off grid recharging of EVs from ESSs. The unique aspect of the method is the use of multi-interface power electronic converter for the grid and ESSs and EVs that can support a range of applications with ac / dc and dc / dc energy conversion ability in a single converter system. The key enabling technology to achieve these functionalities is Oak Ridge Converter (ORC) with polyphase coupler coil system both developed at ORNL. This new technology enables higher power density WPT systems while allowing the coils to interface from ac grid at 60 Hz frequency or dc source directly merging with 85 kHz operating frequency of switching component. The experimental results of the proposed system are presented for 20 kW output power with the system overall efficiency around 95.4% from dc source and 93% overall efficiency from ac grid achieving 9-10% current total harmonic distortion (THD) and 0.98-0.99 power factor (PF).

Optimal Power Management for Large-Scale Battery Energy Storage Systems via Bayesian Inference

Large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) have found ever-increasing use across industry and society to accelerate clean energy transition and improve energy supply reliability and resilience. However, their optimal power management poses significant challenges: the underlying high-dimensional nonlinear nonconvex optimization lacks computational tractability in real-world implementation, and the uncertainty of the exogenous power demand makes exact optimization difficult. This paper presents a new solution framework to address these bottlenecks. The solution pivots on introducing power-sharing ratios to specify each cell’s power quota from the output power demand. To find the optimal power-sharing ratios, we formulate a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) problem to achieve power-loss-minimizing BESS operation while complying with safety, cell balancing, and power supply-demand constraints. We then propose a parameterized control policy for the power-sharing ratios, which utilizes only three parameters, to reduce the computational demand in solving the NMPC problem. This policy parameterization allows us to translate the NMPC problem into a Bayesian inference problem for the sake of 1) computational tractability, and 2) overcoming the nonconvexity of the optimization problem. We leverage the ensemble Kalman inversion technique to solve the parameter estimation problem. Concurrently, a low-level control loop is developed to seamlessly integrate our proposed approach with the BESS to ensure practical implementation. This low-level controller receives the optimal power-sharing ratios, generates output power references for the cells, and maintains a balance between power supply and demand despite uncertainty in output power. We conduct extensive simulations and experiments on a 20-cell prototype to validate the proposed approach.

Flow dynamics and heat transfer in simplified battery energy storage systems with heated battery modules

Large-scale energy storage systems (ESSs) composed of batteries show promise in addressing current energy challenges, but dissipation of generated heat is important. Here, this paper focuses on buoyant convective flows in simplified ESS battery racks. Natural convection is not generally the primary cooling strategy but can be important in abnormal scenarios where there is module overheat or potentially thermal runaway. We use computational fluid dynamics to investigate the flow dynamics and heat transfer mechanisms in a simplified parameterized rack design. Despite its simplicity, this configuration produces many of the relevant features expected in real ESSs without details of module geometry or hardware, allowing broad conclusions independent of manufacture-specific designs. We start by providing visualizations of the flowfield and measurements of entrainment, heat flux, and pressure. To characterize the dependence on the system parameters, we develop an integral-scale analysis of the average temperature equation to highlight the dominant source terms. We use results from this analysis to derive a steady network model composed of simple algebraic expressions to provide first-order predictions of entrainment through the rack. The network model leads to a linear scaling of the Reynolds number based on convective mass flux with respect to the Grashof number based on the heat source. We deduce empirical relationships that relate the heat exchanged between modules using a surface-averaged Nusselt number as a function of the local Reynolds and Rayleigh numbers. Lastly, we investigate how space between the modules and rack in the spanwise direction creates flow bypass, resulting in different flow pathways.

A Hydrokinetic Energy Conversion System using Underwater LLC-type Resonant Converter

The hydrokinetic energy of river and ocean currents is a valuable renewable energy resource. Conventional systems for harvesting hydrokinetic energy usually have bulky passive components, lengthy cables connecting the underwater turbine/generator with onshore power converters, and limited control over power generation. This paper presents a new hydrokinetic energy harvesting system using an LLC-type resonant converter that is placed underwater in close proximity to the generator. By using SiC devices and the soft switching characteristic of LLC resonant converter, the converter operates in 10s of kHz, significantly reducing the passive components. In addition, the LLC converter provides flexible power regulation of the system. Furthermore, the underwater placement of the power converter takes advantage of the cooling provided by the water and simplifies the system by reducing its connecting cable length.

Flow Matching Results of an MHD Energy Bypass System on a Supersonic Turbojet Engine Using the Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS) Environment

Flow matching has been successfully achieved for an MHD energy bypass system on a supersonic turbojet engine. The Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS) environment helped perform a thermodynamic cycle analysis to properly match the flows from an inlet employing a MHD energy bypass system (consisting of an MHD generator and MHD accelerator) on a supersonic turbojet engine. Working with various operating conditions (such as the applied magnetic field, MHD generator length and flow conductivity), interfacing studies were conducted between the MHD generator, the turbojet engine, and the MHD accelerator. This paper briefly describes the NPSS environment used in this analysis. This paper further describes the analysis of a supersonic turbojet engine with an MHD generator/accelerator energy bypass system. Results from this study have shown that using MHD energy bypass in the flow path of a supersonic turbojet engine increases the useful Mach number operating range from 0 to 3.0 Mach (not using MHD) to a range of 0 to 7.0 Mach with specific net thrust range of 740 N-s/kg (at ambient Mach = 3.25) to 70 N-s/kg (at ambient Mach = 7). These results were achieved with an applied magnetic field of 2.5 Tesla and conductivity levels in a range from 2 mhos/m (ambient Mach = 7) to 5.5 mhos/m (ambient Mach = 3.5) for an MHD generator length of 3 m.

Resilient and Cost-Effective Hybrid Li-Ion Battery Energy Storage System for Sites with Solar Generation and Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging (CRADA Final Report, CRD-19-00799)

The batteries of an energy storage system designed for multiple use-cases are traditionally selected to withstand the highest rate at which a battery is discharged relative to its maximum capacity (C-rate) and cycling requirements of the most intense use-case. However, this is not cost-effective given that the price of the batteries is strongly correlated to C-rate and cyclability. We propose to establish design guidelines for a hybrid energy storage system and test an edge controller that uses high-power and high-energy batteries for high- cyclability use cases such as frequency regulation and electric vehicle (EV) charging and low-cost batteries for low-power and low-cyclability use cases such as summer peak loads. The three main objectives of this proposal are (i) establishing sizing guidelines for such a hybrid storage system, (ii) installing a hybrid storage system in the Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) sized based on those guidelines, and (iii) testing an edge controller specific for the system through hardware tests.

Estimating Energy Market Schedules using Historical Price Data

The global climate crisis is expected to reshape the energy generation landscape in the coming decades. Increasing integration of non-dispatchable renewable energy resources into energy infrastructures and markets creates uncertainty as well as new opportunities for flexible energy systems. To conduct proper economic evaluation of flexible energy systems, such as integrated energy systems (IES), advancements in modelling of market interactions, such as bidding, is crucial. This work presents a shortcut algorithm which uses two mixed integer linear programs to compute dispatch schedules (e.g., hourly power production targets) that are constrained by the resource's bid information and characteristics (e.g., minimum up and down times) based on historical locational marginal price (LMP) data. The proposed algorithm is approximately 100 times faster and uses orders of magnitude less data than a full production cost model (PCM). We find the shortcut simulator recapitulates generator dispatch signals for the Prescient PCM with approximately 4% error for the RTS-GMLC test system.

Magnetically Levitated and Constrained Flywheel Energy Storage System

The concept of using linear induction motors to lift, constrain, accelerate, and decelerate a large-scale flywheel is proposed, and some of the advantages are investigated. Calculations for a Magnetically Levitated Energy Storage System (MLES) are performed that compare a single large scale MLES with a current state of the art flywheel energy storage system in order to show the relative differences and advantages of such a system. The system that is used for comparison is a typical Beacon Power flywheel energy system. This is currently one of the state-of-the-art flywheel energy storage systems and so it can be used to provide a basic data set to compare to an MLES system.

Updating Nuclear Energy Cost Estimates for Net Zero World Initiative

Energy modeling of decarbonized scenarios in integrated energy systems requires nuclear energy parameters that are critical for forecasting, modeling and cost structure analysis. Using updated real-world data has always been a challenge to estimate current nuclear reactors costs and deployment scenarios. Given this, an updated set of parameters for overnight capital costs and operation and maintenance costs are estimated for the Net Zero World initiative using recent reports that provided a vast set of open sources data inputs. This paper follows the methodology developed in the Net Zero World report and applies the new ranges estimated in the Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear report that address many of the current challenges in obtaining accurate cost data for advanced nuclear concepts. The final goal is to provide new estimates of the overnight capital costs and operational costs for different countries. The present paper improves the earlier capital cost estimations, building on recent literature that aims to obtain accurate data for modeling and simulation to enhance energy system evaluations and support decision-making in areas like de-carbonization and capacity expansion. Finally, the paper compares the new cost estimates with the old cost results.
