Aerospace Regenerative Fuel Cell Fluidic Component Design Challenges

A discrete regenerative fuel cell (RFC) system is currently under development at the NASA Glenn Research Center and Johnson Space Center. The objective of this activity is to produce an energy storage system with a higher specific energy (W·hr/kg) than the state-of-the-art battery technologies then test that system within an environment simulating the temperatures and pressures expected over a full lunar day cycle on the lunar surface. The system is designed to be as flight-like as possible given resource and commercially available technology limitations. The RFC system is comprised of a fuel cell power system, a high pressure electrolysis system, fluidic and electronic balance of plant systems, avionics, power management and distribution system, and software. This technical memorandum discusses components and subsystems that present challenges in developing flight ready RFCs. To remedy identified issues, functional application test plans are presented for components and subsystems primarily constructed with commercially available options due to the budget and schedule constraints of this ground technology demonstration project.

Multiphysics Modeling of Electrode Dissolution under Hydrodynamic Conditions in Low Conductivity Water

Efficient plug-flow electrochemical reactors are characterized by their ability to effectively convert species with significant ionic strength and/or with the assistance of a well-behaved electrolyte. Because of the classic electroconductivity requirement, electrochemical reactors are not particularly attractive options for applications with low-conductivity conditions, especially for low-pressure feeds. However, these reactors can still find application in dedicated processes such as ultra-clean water conditioning and biological-coupled separation systems. Consequently, a multi-physics model was developed using COMSOL Multiphysics to characterize different reactor-design conditions based on the Tertiary Current Distribution which accounts for the effects of expected variations in electrolyte composition and ionic strength on the electrochemical process, as well as solution resistance and electrode kinetics. The modelling framework presented here employs single-phase laminar fluid flow, the Nernst-Planck equation, the water-based electroneutrality condition, and concentration-dependent overpotentials. This investigation particularly explores the electrolysis process of “anodic dissolution,” in which elemental species dissociate from the solid matrix of the electrode and enter the liquid phase of the electrolyte as soluble ions. The reactor configuration of interest has a rectangular parallel-electrode design and is operated galvanostatically. A series of parametric studies are carried out to inspect the response of the system when hydrodynamic, kinetic, and geometric conditions are changed. The parametric sweep resulted in variable effluent concentrations and system voltage, which reveal underlaying optimization patterns for electrode dissolution in low conductivity water.

Interconnection and Interoperability Requirements of Hydrogen Assets to Enable Grid Integration

Traditionally, the inverters used for distributed energy resources (DERs) including solar, energy storage and hydrogen fuel cells are grid following assets. Grid following assets track real power and reactive power setpoints decided by either a local autonomous controller or a remote controller like a microgrid controller. In the past five years, multiple challenges have increased the need for grid forming inverters that can interface to a wide variety of energy resources. These grid forming inverters are becoming critical assets for power systems to enable the replacement of existing rotational machines and provide grid services such as grid resiliency services and black-start. Hydrogen assets (fuel cells) have the potential to successfully replace rotating machines and act as voltage and frequency master by leveraging the long-duration and seasonal energy storage capabilities of hydrogen technologies. This poster presents the progress made in budget period 1 of the proposed work. We will leverage an existing ARIES platform experimental setup to run power-hardware-in-the-loop and controller-hardware-in-the-loop experiments with grid forming fuel cell inverters to develop and document the standardization requirements.
