Supported X-ray horn for controlling e-beams

A magnetic apparatus and a method of operating the magnetic apparatus can include a scanning electromagnet that redirects a beam of charged particles, a vacuum chamber that prevents the atmosphere from interfering with the charged particles, and, a parallelizing permanent magnet array for parallelizing the beam of charged particles. The parallelizing permanent magnet array can be located proximate to a target comprising a Bremsstrahlung target or an object that is being irradiated. The magnetic field of the scanning electromagnet can be variable to produce all angles necessary to sweep the beam of charged particles across the target and the parallelizing permanent magnet array can be configured from a magnetic material that does not require an electric current.

Avancando na Transicao Energetica: Desafios e Estrategias para a Implantacao Sustentavel de FV

As the world embarks on an ambitious journey towards global decarbonization, the spotlight turns to photovoltaic (PV) technology as a cornerstone for sustainable energy solutions. This talk delves into the current status and projections of PV for the World, US and Brasil, and the necessary considerations to do this increase in manufacturing and deployment sustainably. With the projected scale of deployment, the industry faces significant challenges related to material demand and the management of PV modules at their end of life. The principles of the Circular Economy (CE) and its associated R-Actions - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, among others - present a promising framework to address these challenges by mitigating end-of-life management and material sourcing concerns. However, traditional CE metrics, often focused solely on mass, fall short by excluding vital energy flow considerations. In this talk, we will highlight how various metrics are needed to understand sustainable PV solutions, how continuing the search for increased efficiency can significantly reduce material demands and enhance energy metrics, while strategies around material circularity and module lifetime and reliability improvements will offer substantial reductions in both material and energy demands.

Search for low-energy neutrinos from astrophysical sources with Borexino

We report on searches for neutrinos and antineutrinos from astrophysical sources performed with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. Electron antineutrinos ( $\bar{ν}_e$ ) are detected in an organic liquid scintillator through the inverse β -decay reaction. In the present work we set model-independent upper limits in the energy range 1.8-16.8 MeV on neutrino fluxes from unknown sources that improve our previous results, on average, by a factor 2.5. Using the same data set, we first obtain experimental constraints on the diffuse supernova $\bar{ν}_e$ fluxes in the previously unexplored region below 8 MeV. A search for $\bar{ν}_e$ in the solar neutrino flux is also presented: the presence of $\bar{ν}_e$ would be a manifestation of a non-zero anomalous magnetic moment of the neutrino, making possible its conversion to antineutrinos in the strong magnetic field of the Sun. We obtain a limit for a solar $\bar{ν}_e$ flux of 384 cm -2 s -1 (90% C.L.), assuming an undistorted solar 8 B neutrinos energy spectrum, that corresponds to a transition probability pνe→$\bar{ν}_e$< 7.2 ×10-5 (90% C.L.) for E $\bar{ν}_e$ > 1.8 MeV.At lower energies, by investigating the spectral shape of elastic scattering events, we obtain a new limit on solar 7 Be- ν e conversion into $\bar{ν}_e$ of pνe→$\bar{ν}_e$< 0.14 (90% C.L.) at 0.862 MeV. Last, we investigate solar flares as possible neutrino sources and obtain the strongest up-to-date limits on the fluence of neutrinos of all flavor neutrino below 3–7 MeV. Assuming the neutrino flux to be proportional to the flare’s intensity, we exclude an intense solar flare as the cause of the observed excess of events in run 117 of the Cl-Ar Homestake experiment.

Epidemiological investigation of coccidiosis and associated risk factors in broiler chickens immunized with live anticoccidial vaccines in China

Coccidiosis is a costly intestinal disease of chickens caused by Eimeria species. This infection is associated with high mortality, reduced feed efficiency, and slowed body weight gain. The diagnosis and control of coccidiosis becomes challenging due to the fact that chickens can be infected by seven different Eimeria species and often occur mixed-species co-infections. Grasping the epidemiology of Eimeria species is crucial to estimate the efficiency of poultry management. This study aimed to explore the distribution of Eimeria species in broiler chickens in China after administering live anticoccidial vaccines. A total of 634 samples were obtained, and the survey results showed that the prevalence of Eimeria was 86.12% (546/634), and the most common species were E. acervulina (65.62%), E. necatrix (50.95%), E. mitis (50.79%), E. tenella (48.42%), and E. praecox (41.80%). Most samples indicated mixed-species infections (an average of 3.29 species per positive sample). Notably, 63.98% of samples contain 3 to 5 Eimeria species within a single fecal sample. The most prevalent combinations were E. acervulina – E. tenella (38.96%) and E. acervulina – E. necatrix (37.22%). Statistical analysis showed that flocks vaccinated with trivalent vaccines were significantly positive for E. necatrix in grower chickens (OR = 3.30, p < 0.05) compared with starter chickens, and tetravalent vaccinated flocks showed that starter chickens demonstrated a higher susceptibility to E. tenella – E. brunetti (OR = 2.03, p < 0.05) and E. acervulina – E. maxima (OR = 2.05, p < 0.05) compared with adult chickens. Geographically, in the case of tetravalent vaccine-immunized flocks, a substantial positive association was observed between E. necatrix infection rates and flocks from eastern (OR = 3.88, p < 0.001), central (OR = 2.65, p = 0.001), and southern China (OR = 3.17, p < 0.001) compared with southwestern China. This study also found a positive association between E. necatrix (OR = 1.64, p < 0.05), E. acervulina (OR = 1.59, p < 0.05), and E. praecox (OR = 1.81, p < 0.05) infection and coccidiosis occurrence compared with non-infected flocks in tetravalent vaccinated flocks. This molecular epidemiological investigation showed a high prevalence of Eimeria species in the field. The emergent species, E. brunetti and E. praecox , might be incorporated into the widely-used live vaccines in the future. These insights could be useful in refining coccidiosis control strategies in the poultry industry.

A conformational equilibrium in the nitrogenase MoFe protein with an α-V70I amino acid substitution illuminates the mechanism of H 2 formation

Study of α-V70I-substituted nitrogenase MoFe protein identified Fe6 of FeMo-cofactor (Fe 7 S 9 MoC-homocitrate) as a critical N 2 binding/reduction site. Freeze-trapping this enzyme during Ar turnover captured the key catalytic intermediate in high occupancy, denoted E 4 (4H), which has accumulated 4[e — /H + ] as two bridging hydrides, Fe2–H–Fe6 and Fe3–H–Fe7, and protons bound to two sulfurs. E 4 (4H) is poised to bind/reduce N 2 as driven by mechanistically-coupled H 2 reductive-elimination of the hydrides. This process must compete with ongoing hydride protonation (HP), which releases H 2 as the enzyme relaxes to state E 2 (2H), containing 2[e — /H + ] as a hydride and sulfur-bound proton; accumulation of E 4 (4H) in α-V70I is enhanced by HP suppression. EPR and 95 Mo ENDOR spectroscopies now show that resting-state α-V70I enzyme exists in two conformational states, both in solution and as crystallized, one with wild type (WT)-like FeMo-co and one with perturbed FeMo-co. These reflect two conformations of the Ile residue, as visualized in a reanalysis of the X-ray diffraction data of α-V70I and confirmed by computations. EPR measurements show delivery of 2[e — /H + ] to the E 0 state of the WT MoFe protein and to both α-V70I conformations generating E 2 (2H) that contains the Fe3–H–Fe7 bridging hydride; accumulation of another 2[e — /H + ] generates E 4 (4H) with Fe2–H–Fe6 as the second hydride. E 4 (4H) in WT enzyme and a minority α-V70I E 4 (4H) conformation as visualized by QM/MM computations relax to resting-state through two HP steps that reverse the formation process: HP of Fe2–H–Fe6 followed by slower HP of Fe3–H–Fe7, which leads to transient accumulation of E 2 (2H) containing Fe3–H–Fe7. In the dominant α-V70I E 4 (4H) conformation, HP of Fe2–H–Fe6 is passively suppressed by the positioning of the Ile sidechain; slow HP of Fe3–H–Fe7 occurs first and the resulting E 2 (2H) contains Fe2–H–Fe6. Importantly, it is this HP suppression in E 4 (4H) that enables α-V70I MoFe to accumulate E 4 (4H) in high occupancy. In addition, HP suppression in α-V70I E 4 (4H) kinetically unmasks hydride reductive-elimination without N 2 -binding, a process that is precluded in WT enzyme.

Experimental study of high-k turbulence during an energy confinement degradation phase in EAST ohmic plasmas

In this paper, we present experimental studies of both high-k(r) ( cm(-1), and , respectively; ) and high- ( cm(-1), and , respectively; ) turbulence behavior during an ohmic energy confinement degradation phase in experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST). High-k(r) turbulence from density fluctuation at and high- turbulence from density fluctuation at -0.97 were measured by tangential and poloidal CO2 laser collective scattering diagnostics, respectively. Note that k(r), , and are radial wavenumber, poloidal wavenumber, perpendicular wavenumber and ion gyroradius at electron temperature, respectively. Both high-k(r)/ turbulence power and energy confinement time are found to be temporally correlated to line-averaged electron density n(e) in the plasma current flat-top phase (I-p = 0.4 MA): when the n(e) shows continuous increase/decrease, the high-k(r)/ turbulence power increases/decreases correspondingly and the shows corresponding decrease/increase; the stable n(e) is related to stable both and high-k(r)/ turbulence power. Statistical results of high-k(r)/ turbulence power versus further imply that high-k(r)/ turbulence shows a strong correlation with plasma energy confinement degradation in high line-averaged n(e) condition, but high-k(r) and high- turbulence have relatively weak and no dependence on the transition between linear range in low-n(e) condition and energy confinement degradation in the high-n(e) condition, respectively. Moreover, profiles of electron temperature T-e and n(e) as well as their normalized gradients in a part of high- density fluctuation measurement region also have been given to qualitatively explain the enhancement of turbulence power with the increase of line-averaged n(e).

Nonlinear modeling of the scaling law for the m/n = 3/2 error field penetration threshold

The scaling law for the m/n=3/2 error field (EF) penetration threshold is predicted numerically based on nonlinear single-fluid and two-fluid modeling using the TM1 code. The simulated penetration threshold of radial magnetic field b r at the plasma edge is scaled to the electron density n e , temperature T e , viscous time τ μ , toroidal field B t and the natural frequency ω in the form of b r /B t ∝n e αn T e αT τ μ αμ B t αB ω αω by scanning these parameters separately. Here, α n , α T , α μ , α B and α ω are the scaling coefficients on n e , T e , τ μ , B t and ω, respectively. Single-fluid modeling shows that the 3/2 EF threshold scales as b r /B t ∝n e 0.56 T e 0.6 τ μ -0.59 B t -1.15 ω, which is similar with the analytical scaling law in both the Rutherford and visco-resistive regimes. Yet, two-fluid modeling shows that the scaling law differs significantly in particular regarding the dependence on plasma rotation. In detail, the scaling coefficient α n on density decreases from 0.67 to 0.56 and α T on temperature decreases from 0.67 to 0.32, while α μ on viscous time is around -0.45 and α B on toroidal field decreases slightly from -1.15 to -1, when the ratio |ω E /ω *e | between plasma rotation frequency ω E and diamagnetic drift frequency ω *e varies from 0 to 10. Scans of the plasma rotation reveals that the penetration threshold linearly depends on the perpendicular rotation frequency (or natural frequency) ω ⊥e =ω E +ω *e , and there is a minimum in the required field amplitude when ω ⊥e 0. In addition, the enduring mystery of non-zero penetration threshold at zero plasma natural frequency in EF experiments is resolved by two-fluid simulations. We report that the very small island and smooth bifurcation in EF penetration near zero frequency is hard to detect in the experiment, leading to a finite penetration threshold within the capability of the experimental measurements.

Investigating the role of edge neutrals in exciting tearing mode activity and achieving flat temperature profiles in LTX-β

Abstract We present observations, numerical simulations, and analysis from experiments in the Lithium Tokamak Experiment-Beta (LTX- β ) in which the electron temperature profile ( T e ( r )) shifts from flat to peaked and a tearing mode is also destabilized when the average density ( n e ave ) exceeds ∼10 19 m −3 . Flat T e ( r ) is obtained routinely in LTX- β , with a lithium coated, low-recycling first wall, once the external fueling is stopped and density decays [Boyle et al 2023 Nucl. Fusion 63 056020]. In the present experiment, flat T e profiles can be sustained while maintaining constant n e ave below a line averaged density threshold ( n e ave th ) of ∼10 19 m −3 . Above n e ave th , T e ( r ) shifts from flat to peaked and a tearing mode is destabilized. Due to low recycling, the achieved n e ave can be controlled precisely by external fueling and hence, a certain threshold of the edge neutral inventory from the external fueling is experimentally manifested through n e ave th . The goal of the present work is to investigate the role of edge neutrals in determining T e ( r ) and MHD stability in the unique low-recycling regime of LTX- β . Our hypothesis is that the peaking of T e ( r ) beyond n e ave th is due ultimately to the edge cooling by the cold neutrals beyond a critical fueling flux. At lower fueling flux, flat T e ( r ) results in broader pressure profile and lower resistivity, which in turn stabilizes the tearing mode. This hypothesis is supported by edge neutral density estimation by DEGAS 2 code. Mode analysis by singular value decomposition confirms the tearing mode structure to be m / n = 2/1 ( m and n being the poloidal and toroidal mode numbers). Linear tearing stability analysis with M3D-C1 predicts that plasmas with n e ave > 10 19 are highly susceptible to a n = 1 tearing mode. ORBIT simulations, however, confirmed that the tearing modes do not contribute to the loss of fast ions from neutral beam injection. This study shows for the first time that the neutral inventory at the edge could be one of the deciding factors for the achievability of the unique operation regime of flat T e ( r ) and the excitation of tearing activity that could be disruptive for the plasmas.
