Thermal Neutron Scattering Research at ORNL – ENDF File Validation [Slides]

ENDF File Validation is a process developed to simulate VISION experiments. This method showed significant differences in inelastic spectra compared to experimental measurements. Differential data should be incorporated into thermal neutron scattering evaluation process to ensure accurate TSL files. The Polyethylene Discrepancy Issue has been found and corrected. The resulting ENDF manual change has been submitted and is currently under review.

Horizontal Split Table Conceptual Design for Validation of Nuclear Data used in Advanced Reactors [Slides]

A methodology to create conceptual designs of benchmark critical experiments for advanced reactors nuclear data testing and validation was developed. A first concept was explored, pebble-bed high-temperature gas cooled reactor, based on the HTR-10 reactor. The very high correlation is a proof of concept that the design is similar to the application, and performing such critical experiments would help nuclear data testing and validation. This proof-of-concept was included in the IER-539 CED-1:Preliminary Design of a New Horizontal Split Table report. Other concepts could be explored if needed, such as Molten-salt reactor, Sodium-cooled fast reactor or Heat pipe reactors/Microreactor.

Isotope Effects in Thermal Neutron Scattering [Slides]

AMPX links Thermal Scattering Law (TSL) libraries to isotopes in the resolved resonance region. No guidance is given in the TSL files or the ENDF format if this is acceptable or advised, which can lead to several issues. This presentation discusses these issues and provides suggested solutions.

Expanded Validation of Uranium Systems with the KENO Monte Carlo Codes and SCALE 6.2.4 [Slides]

There is likely a trend in bias for uranium-fueled systems as a function of spectrum, but probably not as a function of enrichment. Some enrichment trends appear, but are potentially the result of outlier experimental results; further investigation is needed where possible. There are good examples in this data of markedly different biases from different systems. Future work includes review and vetting for inclusion in the VALID library and analysis with TSUNAMI.

Updates to the n+ 63,65 Cu Evaluations: RRR and Angular Distributions [Slides]

This work updates the evaluation of n+ 63,65 Cu for neutron energies in the resolved resonance region (RRR) and slightly higher energies. The updates strive to improve the statistical properties of the resonance parameters and the continuity of the evaluation between the RRR and the high-energy region while preserving or improving critical assembly benchmark performance. We will review our work on the resonance parameters and present the current status of our angular distribution analysis.

181 Ta Evaluation in the Unresolved Resonance Range [Slides]

181 Ta is a refractory metal with several nuclear applications including neutron production targets, reactors, and tools for molten actinides. An updated evaluation of 181 Ta includes new measured data, RRR extended up to 2.5 keV (ENDF/B-8.0 upper range is 330 eV), URR extended to 100 keV (ENDF/B-8.0 upper range is 5 keV), and the consistent merging of URR with fast neutron region (Herman).

Compare $\overline{ν}$ parameterizations for 235 U(n,f) with fitted fission barriers

In this document, we compare observables computed with CGMF to some available data for 235 U(n,f), to investigate the multi-chance fission probabilities (fission barriers from CoH were refit) and two TKE parametrization. The four parametrizations include i) default CGMF multi-chance fission probabilities with bends in TKE for all fission chances, ii) default CGMF multi-chance fission probabilities with a TKE bend in only first-chance fission iii) refitted multi-chance fission probabilities with bends in TKE for all fission chances, and iv) refitted multi-chance fission probabilities with a bend in TKE for only first-chance fission. In all figures where the four parametrizations are on the same plot, the ones with bends in TKE for all chance fission are in black, with only first-chance bend in red, the default multi-chance fission probabilities are dashed and the new multi-chance fission probabilities are the solid lines.

Digitizing Curves from LA-10860 to be Used in CritView

This report documents the digitization of figures from LA-10860-MS in order to import the data into the CritView software application. The original figures were created by Los Alamos National Laboratory and the latest revision was released in 1986. All figures were digitized using Engauge Digitizer (ver. 12.1) .
