A comparative study of the fatty acid composition of prochloron lipids

The chemical analysis of lipids of Prochloron isolated from several hosts is discussed. The object was to determine whether differences in lipid composition could be used to characterize organisms from different sources. Major lipid components are given. An analysis of fatty acid composition of individual lipids slowed a distinctive disstribution of fatty acids. While present results do not justify the use of fatty acid content in the taxonomy of Prochlon, the variations found in the lipids of cells from the same host harvested from different areas, or at different times in the same area, suggest that a study of the effects of temperature and light intensity on lipid composition would be rewarding.

A comparative review of bow shocks and magnetopauses

Bow shock and magnetopauses formation is discussed. Plasma and magnetic field environments of all the planets from Mercury to Saturn were measured. It was found that all the planets have bow shocks and almost all have a magnetopause. Venus is the only planet with no measurable intrinsic magnetic field and the solar wind interacts directly with Venus' ionosphere. The bow shock characteristics depend on the changing solar wind conditions. The shape of a magnetopause or any obstacle to flow depends on the three dimensional pressure profile that it presents to the solar wind. Jupiter is unusual because of the considerable amount of plasma which is contained in its magnetosphere. Magnetopause boundaries in ecliptic plane projection are modelled by segments of ellipses, matched to straight lines for the magnetotool boundaries or parabolas. Specific properties of known planetary bow shocks and magnetopauses are reviewed.

A comparative study on synthetic aperture radar and optical imagery of ocean waves

The ocean imaging capability of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is examined in terms of an intercomparison between simultaneous, spatially collocated images of a coastal ocean scene, as recorded by aerial photography and aircraft-borne SAR. Based on a detailed study of these images, this paper examines various local features of oceanographic interest as they are imaged by the two methods. This provides information not available in the usual comparisons of normalized SAR and single point buoy spectra. In addition, aspects of the intensity wavenumber spectra of the two images are examined and discussed. An interesting and surprising conclusion arising from the comparison study is the ability of the SAR to image accurately non-uniform (possibly nonlinear) wave features which are imaged by the aerial photography. This result should have important implications on the development of SAR imaging models and the interpretation of the effect of ocean surface motion on the SAR images.

A comparative review of radiation aerosol models

Aerosol characteristics to be introduced into a set of models within a framework of a Standard Radiation Atmosphere (SRA) are reviewed, and a reconciliation of the Toon and Pollack (TP) global model with the SRA models is attempted. Among the topics discussed are physical and radiative characteristics, radiation aerosol models, albedo for single scattering, and phase function and spectral variation of extinction. Size distribution models are also covered, inclusive the Junge power law, and the modified gamma-, log normal-, and zold-distribution. Recommendations include modifying the SRA profile VI to resemble the Elterman profile modified in the TP model, improving discontinuity at the tropopause level for all SRA models, and retaining the same log-normal size distribution for all SRA components.

Optimizing and comparing laser anemometers

Comparisons can be made only if some single valued measure of the quality of each system can be defined. This concept is illustrated here by specifying the quality variable to be the measurement uncertainty in the mean velocity of a turbulent flow in the presence of a large background noise. The Fisher number is used as a figure of merit for some parts of the system. It is noted that in many cases of practical interest, the reciprocal Fisher number gives the actual variance of an estimator. Its principal advantage here is that it can be computed without detailed assumptions about the statistics of the estimated quantities. The concept of a Fisher number is related to the concept of information gain in a measurement. The variance of the measured mean velocity is expressed in terms of the uncertainty for the individual measurements, the measurement rate, and the velocity correlation time. Conditions are given under which the fringe and the two-spot anemometer are optimized.

Comparative ionospheres. I - The inner planets. II - The outer planets

A description is given first of the fundamental physical and chemical processes controlling the thermospheres and ionospheres of the inner planets, Venus and Mars. A comparison is made between the neutral composition and temperature structure of Venus and Mars and those of the earth. Consideration is then given to the chemical and diffusion processes in the ionosphere. After a brief treatment of the ionospheric energetics and heat sources, the mechanisms underlying the maintenance of the nightside ionosphere of Venus are reviewed. A description is then given of the upper atmospheres and ionospheres of the major planets, Jupiter and Saturn. The treatment of the temperature structure and composition of the thermospheres of the major planets includes a description of the physical and chemical processes controlling the hydrocarbons and atomic hydrogen. A comparison is then made between the ionospheres of the major planets and those of the inner planets. It is noted that Io and Titan also have atmospheres and ionospheres, and these are treated briefly. Even though comets cannot be classed as planets, they have atmospheres and ionospheres that are not gravitationally confined.

Radial gradient of cosmic ray intensity from a comparative study of data from Voyager 1 and 2 and IMP 8

The IMP 8 satellite and Voyager 1 and 2 space probes obtained cosmic ray measurements during the late 1977 to mid-1982 period. Comparisons of 27-day averages of the data show that a positive radial intensity gradient existed on the average during this period, and that the cosmic ray intensity decrease toward solar maximum in 1980-1981 proceeds in a stepwise fashion. The cosmic ray minimum reached in late 1980/early 1981 appears almost simultaneously at 1 AU and at 10 AU, with and without propagation time delay effects, between IMP 8 and the Voyager spacecraft. These data are generally consistent with a heliolatitudinal gradient of 0 + or - 1 percent/deg. Attention is given to the implications of these results in the overall context of cosmic ray modulation theory.

A comparative study of aerosol extinction measurements made by the SAM II and SAGE satellite experiments

SAM II and SAGE are two satellite experiments designed to measure stratospheric aerosol extinction using the technique of solar occultation or limb extinction. Although each sensor is mounted aboard a different satellite, there are occasions when their measurement locations are nearly coincident, thereby providing opportunities for a measurement comparison. In this paper, the aerosol extinction profiles and daily contour plots for some of these events in 1979 are reported. The comparisons shown in this paper demonstrate that SAM II and SAGE are producing similar aerosol extinction profiles within their measurement errors and that since SAM II has been previously validated, these results show the validity of the SAGE aerosol measurements.

Rapid diagnostic methods for influenza virus in clinical specimens - A comparative study

A comparison of five rapid viral diagnostic techniques for identifying influenza virus in nasopharyngeal aspirates has been made on patients with influenza-like illnesses. Initial results with immune electron microscopy were positive in only one of 11 specimens from which virus was isolated and further work abandoned. Four other rapid tests were carried out on 39 specimens from which influenza virus had been isolated in tissue culture in 28. Of these 28 specimens yielding virus, 24 (85.7 percent) were positive by an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) on nasopharyngeal cells, 18 (64.3 percent) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), 19 (67.8 percent) by enzyme-linked fluorescent assay (ELFA), and 26 (92.8 percent) by a rapid tissue culture amplification method (TCA) in a continuous Rhesus monkey kidney line (LLC-MK2) with identification of virus by fluorescent antibody. In terms of sensitivity, simplicity, and rapidity, a combination of the IFAT and TCA methods seems to be very useful.

A comparative study of the nonuniqueness problem of the potential equation

The nonuniqueness problem occurring at transonic speeds with the conservative potential equation is investigated numerically. The study indicates that the problem is not an inviscid phenomenon, but results from approximate treatment of shock waves inherent in the conservative potential model. A new bound on the limit of validity of the conservative potential model is proposed.

Comparative analysis of operational forecasts versus actual weather conditions in airline flight planning, volume 4

The impact of more timely and accurate weather data on airline flight planning with the emphasis on fuel savings is studied. This volume of the report discusses the results of Task 4 of the four major tasks included in the study. Task 4 uses flight plan segment wind and temperature differences as indicators of dates and geographic areas for which significant forecast errors may have occurred. An in-depth analysis is then conducted for the days identified. The analysis show that significant errors occur in the operational forecast on 15 of the 33 arbitrarily selected days included in the study. Wind speeds in an area of maximum winds are underestimated by at least 20 to 25 kts. on 14 of these days. The analysis also show that there is a tendency to repeat the same forecast errors from prog to prog. Also, some perceived forecast errors from the flight plan comparisons could not be verified by visual inspection of the corresponding National Meteorological Center forecast and analyses charts, and it is likely that they are the result of weather data interpolation techniques or some other data processing procedure in the airlines' flight planning systems.

Comparing attitude control effectiveness for actuators on two bodies of a six body model of a flexible spacecraft with that for actuators restricted to a single body

A ten rigid body model of a prototype flexible space platform was approximated by a six body model to facilitate comparison of attitude control effectiveness for actuators on two bodies with control effectiveness for actuators restricted to a single body of the same model. Actuators and sensors were found to be required on two of the six bodies for effective attitude control.
