Vacancy Mediated Electrooxidation of 5‐Hydroxymethyl Furfuryl Using Defect Engineered Layered Double Hydroxide Electrocatalysts

Abstract Electrochemical biomass oxidation coupled with hydrogen evolution offers a promising route to generate value‐added chemicals and clean energy. The complex adsorption behavior of 5‐hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) and hydroxyl ions (OH − ) on the electrocatalyst surface during HMF electrooxidation reaction (HMFOR) necessitates an in‐depth understanding of active sites available for adsorption. Herein, oxygen vacancy (V O ) defects are introduced in NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) using Ce dopants to manipulate electronic structure. Synchrotron‐based HE‐XRD and XAS indicate negligible V O in La‐doped NiFe while Ce doping leads to V O defects due to flexible Ce redox (Ce 3+ ↔ Ce 4+ ). The V O ‐rich Ce‐NiFe exhibits higher Faradic efficiency of ≈90% to produce 2,5‐furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA), far greater than ≈60% for NiFe V O in Ce‐NiFe act as alternative active sites for OH − adsorption, hence reducing adsorption competition for the same metal sites. DFT calculation results corroborate experimental findings by showcasing that the presence of V O in Ce‐NiFe manipulates the adsorption energies and facilitates the chemical adsorption OH − in V O to improve HMFOR. In situ HE‐XRD derived pair distribution function coupled to RMC simulations confirm OH − trapping in V O and HMF adsorption on metal centers as evident by interlayer distance evolution. Taken together, this work showcases routes for dual‐site electrocatalyst design for improved biomass electrooxidation.

Plutonium and Cerium Perrhenate/Pertechnetate Coordination Polymers and Frameworks

Spent nuclear fuel (SNF) contains transuranic and lanthanide species, which are sometimes recovered and repurposed. One particularly problematic fission product, 99 TcO 4 – , hampers this recovery via coextraction with high valence metals, perhaps by complexation during aqueous reprocessing of SNF. There is limited molecular-level knowledge concerning the coordination chemistry between TcO 4 – or its well-known surrogate ReO 4 – and transuranic/lanthanide species. In the current study, we investigated the coordination of ReO 4 – /TcO 4 – with plutonium and cerium cations by structural and chemical characterization of a series of isolated extended solids. In this study, Ce represents both trivalent lanthanides and is considered a surrogate for Pu, respectively, in its common trivalent and tetravalent oxidation states. The structural elucidation of the seven isolated crystalline solids revealed that ReO 4 – /TcO 4 – directly connects to Pu IV , Pu VI O 2 2 + , Ce III , and Ce IV in the terminal and bridging coordination modes, leading to 1-, 2-, and 3-dimensional frameworks. For example, ReO 4 – coordination to Pu(IV) formed a 1D chain or 2D framework, isostructural with previously isolated Th(IV) compounds. However, Pu VI O 2 2 + alternating with ReO 4 – led to a unique 1D chain, different from the prior-reported U(VI)/Np(VI)-ReO 4 – /TcO 4 – structures. Coordination of ReO 4 – /TcO 4 – with Ce(III) promotes the assembly of 3D frameworks. Finally, attempted synthesis of a Ce(IV)-ReO 4 – compound resulted in a 2D framework with a mixed-valence Ce III/IV . The highly acidic reaction conditions supported the reduction of both Ce IV and Tc VII , challenging isolation of compounds featuring these species. Only one TcO 4 -containing structure was obtained in this study (Ce III –TcO 4 3D framework), vs the six total Ce/Pu-ReO 4 compounds. Furthermore, our three Pu-ReO 4 crystal structures are the first reported and translated to atomic-level information about Pu-TcO 4 coordination in nuclear fuel reprocessing scenarios, in addition to broadening our knowledge of bonding trends in the early, high-valence actinides.

High-Temperature-Performance Cyanate Ester Composites with Carboranes

Cyanate ester (CE) is an important class of materials among high-temperature performance thermosets. It is used in aerospace launch vehicles, heat sinks, booms, and trusses of satellites etc. due to its high glass transition temperatures (>220°C), excellent thermal stability, and low flammability. Current approaches to improve the thermal stability of CE include incorporation of siloxanes or phosphorus- based flame retardants (PFRs). In this work, we have explored boron-based hydroxy (PD) and epoxy (EP) functionalized carborane additives to improve the thermal properties of CE. Carborane fillers were solvent blended at various mass loadings in the resin and cured to study their effect on thermal properties. PD and EP carboranes react with CE to form iminocarbonate and oxazolidinone linkages respectively. Cure kinetics studies at different wt% loadings explained that carboranes catalyze the curing reaction by reducing curing activation energy by about 54% and 26% for 10 wt% loadings of PD and EP carboranes respectively. In addition, carborane-filled cyanate ester (CE) nanocomposites demonstrate an exceptionally high thermal stability as compared to the pristine resin in air and inert environment. Our thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) experiments show that the ultimate char yield of the resin can be increased from 0% to as high as 76% and 82% with 30 wt% PD and EP carborane loading respectively at 1000 °C in air. The initial degradation temperature T d;5 of the composites decreased with increasing carborane loadings in both air and argon. For instance, T d;5 for CE was 465 and 471.6 °C in argon and air while that for P20 was 437.4 and 452.1 °C. Modulated TGA studies gave evidence of the effect of carboranes on degradation kinetics and the mechanism of the resin in air and inert environment. The effect of bonding between carboranes and CE at various loadings on the thermal expansion of the matrix was also studied using Thermomechanical Analyzer (TMA). PD carborane reduced the T g for P20 to about 225 °C while CE had T g >350 °C.
