High spectral resolution observations of the coronal X-ray emission from the RS CVn binary Sigma Corona Borealis

The results of high-resolution observations of the RS CVn binary star Rho Cr B are reported. The observations were carried out using the Focal Plane Crystal Spectrometer (FPCS) onboard the Einstein Observatory satellite. A spectral scan in the interval 800-840 eV shows clear evidence of an X-ray emission line at 826 eV identified with 1S(0)-1P(1) transition of Fe XVII. A prominent peak at 1007 eV in the scan band 986-1014 eV was attributed to a blend of lines produced by highly ionized iron. On the basis of the observed fluxes of the lines and the theoretical calculations of Raymond and Smith (1977), best-fit values of corona temperature and volume emission measures of 6.92 (+0.84 or -0.75) x 10 to the 6th K, and 1.74 (+0.55 or -0.69) x 10 to the 35th are derived, respectively. Some implications of the results are briefly discussed.

Optical studies of a binary miscibility gap system

Model transparent fluids are being studied to develop a better understanding of phase separation processes in binary miscibility-gap metal alloys. The model selected for the reported work is diethylene glycol-ethyl salicylate. This system is well characterized with respect to its phase diagram, density, surface and interfacial tensions, viscosity, and other pertinent physical properties. Minority phase growth, coalescence, and droplet motions are observed using holographic microscopy which is capable of recording particle densities up to 10 to the 7th particles/cu cm and is able to resolve particles as small as 2 to 3 microns in diameter throughout the entire volume of the test cell. Sequential holograms allow determination of droplet size distribution changes throughout the total volume with respect to time and temperature. This allows a direct method for testing various theories of droplet growth and ripening phenomena.

Pulsar magnetospheres in binary systems

The criterion for stability of a tangential discontinuity interface in a magnetized, perfectly conducting inviscid plasma is investigated by deriving the dispersion equation including the effects of both gravitational and centrifugal acceleration. The results are applied to neutron star magnetospheres in X-ray binaries. The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability appears to be important in determining whether MHD waves of large amplitude generated by instability may intermix the plasma effectively, resulting in accretion onto the whole star as suggested by Arons and Lea and leading to no X-ray pulsar behavior.

The apsidal motion of the eccentric eclipsing binary DI Herculis - An apparent discrepancy with general relativity

The apsidal motion of the eccentric eclipsing binary DI Herculis (HD 175227) is determined from an analysis of the available observations and eclipse timings from 1959 to 1984. Least squares solutions to the primary and secondary minima extending over an 84-yr interval yielded a small advance of periastron omega dot of 0.65 deg/100 yr + or - 0.18/100 yr. The observed advance of the periastron is about one seventh of the theoretical value of 4.27 deg/100 yr that is expected from the combined relativistic and classical effects. The discrepancy is about -3.62 deg/100 yr, or a magnitude of about 20 sigma. Classical mechanisms which explain the discrepancy are discussed, together with the possibility that there may be problems with general relativity itself.

High-resolution X-ray observations of nearby binary systems Flaring and evidence for unseen companions

The high-resolution imager (HRI) of the Einstein Observatory has the resolution necessary to resolve components of some nearby binaries. From an analysis of four systems that are within 10 pc of the sun and that contain one or more dM stars, the occurrence of X-ray flares with time scales of tens of minutes is reported. One of the stars has an extended X-ray image which is interpreted as evidence for the existence of an unseen companion.

LSS 2018 - A double-lined spectroscopic binary central star with an extremely large reflection effect

LSS 2018, the central star of the planetary nebulae DS1, was found to be a double-lined spectroscopic binary with a period of 8.571 hours. Light variations with the same period were observed in U, B, and V; in the wavelength regions defined by the two IUE cameras; and in the strength of the CIII 4647 emission line. The light variations can be accurately predicted by a simple reflection effect, and an analysis of the light curves yields the angular diameter and effective temperature of the primary, the radii of the two stars in terms of their separation, and the inclination of the system. Analysis of the radial velocities then yields the masses of the two stars, their separation, the distance of the system, the absolute magnitude of the primary, and the size of the nebula.

Binary collision rates of relativistic thermal plasmas. I Theoretical framework

Binary collision rates for arbitrary scattering cross sections are derived in the case of a beam of particles interacting with a Maxwell-Boltzmann (MB) plasma, or in the case of two MB plasmas interacting at generally different temperatures. The expressions are valid for all beam energies and plasma temperatures, from the nonrelativistic to the extreme relativistic limits. The calculated quantities include the reaction rate, the energy exchange rate, and the average rate of change of the squared transverse momentum component of a monoenergetic particle beam as a result of scatterings with particles of a MB plasma. Results are specialized to elastic scattering processes, two-temperature reaction rates, or the cold plasma limit, reproducing previous work.

Low-mass X-ray binaries

A review is given of current understanding of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), which are luminous X-ray sources composed of a late-type optical companion (mass less than about 1 solar mass) and a neutron star (or possibly a black hole). Thirty-two LMXBs have been identified with optical counterparts in the Galaxy and one in the Large Magellanic Cloud (Brad and McClintock, 1983). It is unlikely that there are more than about 100 active LMXBs in the Galaxy, compared with about 200,000 cataclysmic variables. Topics covered in the review are: typical X-ray and optical properties; orbital periods; the nature of the compact source; accretion disks; formation; mass transfer mechanisms; and globular clusters and bright bulge X-ray sources.

Is 1220 Crocus a precessing, binary asteroid?

Photoelectric data of the asteroid 1220 Crocus over a 13 night period in 1984 revealed the presence of two separate periods. The light curves were indicative of a precessing body, but not one in free precession due to motions induced by a collision. Closer examinations revealed periods of 30.7 and 7.9 hr with amplitudes of 0.87 and 0.15 mag, respectively. An analysis of the source of an external torque which could be causing a forced precession led to the hypothesis that 1220 Crocus has a satellite. Verification of the binary asteroid configuration will depend on more detailed light curves, the possible modulation of the shorter period by the longer, and possible use of the Space Telescope.

Dendritic solidification in a binary alloy melt: Steady-state versus morphological stability theories

A model for dendritic growth in a binary alloy melt, in the presence of a positive temperature gradient in the liquid, is presented. The model describes satisfactorily the transition from a dendritic interface to a planar interface at very low and very large growth rates. A dendrite tip stability parameter is derived, strictly from steady state considerations, without resorting to a perturbation analysis. The estimates of the parameter agree with those obtained by models based on perturbation analyses.

Periodic binary sequences with very good autocorrelation properties

Computer searches were performed using both an 8086 microprocessor and a Cyber 750 mainframe to find repeated binary phase coded waveforms with very good matched and mismatched autocorrelation properties. The best results for every period up to 64 are given. Sequences with optimal peak sidelobes were discovered for each of these periods. These sequences have extensive applications in radar and communications, particularly in situations when there are very unfavorable signal-to-noise ratios. The best sequence of period 64 when processed using a mismatched filter giving no sidelobes has a reduction in the main lobe of less than 0.23 dB.

A binary sequence of period 60 with better autocorrelation properties than the Barker sequence of period 13

A binary sequence of period 60 has been discovered which in some respects has better autocorrelation properties than the Barker sequence of period 13. When both sequences are processed using appropriate sidelobe-eliminating mismatched filters, the Barker sequence's main lobe is reduced by a factor of 1.040 or 0.17 dB, while the new sequence's main lobe is reduced by a factor of only 1.035 or 0.15 dB. This sequence is the first counterexample known to the authors of the hypothesis that the autocorrelation properties of all sequences of periods greater than 13 are inferior to those of the Barker period-13 sequences. Sequences of this type are very useful in radar and deep space communications, especially in situations where there is an adverse signal to noise ratio.

An exact solution for the solidification of a liquid slab of binary mixture

The time dependent temperature and concentration profiles of a one dimensional finite slab of a binary liquid alloy is investigated during solidification. The governing equations are reduced to a set of coupled, nonlinear initial value problems using the method outlined by Meyer. Two methods will be used to solve these equations. The first method uses a Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg integrator to solve the equations numerically. The second method comprises of finding closed form solutions of the equations.

Slow plastic strain rate compressive flow in binary CoAl intermetallics

Constant-velocity elevated temperature compression tests have been conducted on a series of binary CoAl intermetallics produced by hot extrusion of blended prealloyed powders. The as-extruded materials were polycrystalline, and they retained their nominal 10-micron grain size after being tested between 1100 and 1400 K at strain rates ranging from 2 x 10 to the -4th to 2 x 10 to the -7th per sec. Significant plastic flow was obtained in all cases; while cracking was observed, much of this could be due to failure at matrix-oxide interfaces along extrusion stringers rather than to solely intergranular fracture. A maximum in flow strength occurs at an aluminum-to-cobalt ratio of 0.975, and the stress exponent appears to be constant for aluminum-to-cobalt ratios of 0.85 or more. It is likely that very aluminum-deficient materials deform by a different mechanism than do other compositions.

Statistical mechanics of light elements at high pressure. VIII - Thomas-Fermi-Dirac theory for binary mixtures of H with He, C, and O

We present three-dimensional Thomas-Fermi-Dirac calculations of lattice mixing energies of hydrogen with carbon and oxygen atoms, respectively. The results are used to derive effective interatomic potentials for use in liquid-state mixture calculations. We then use the potentials to derive analytic expressions for binary mixture-free energies and to map out the phase diagrams of mixtures of hydrogen with, respectively, helium, carbon, and oxygen, over a pressure range of about 5 to about 10 to the 3rd Mbar. Within this pressure range, all three of the latter elements are found to have unlimited solubility in metallic hydrogen over a temperature range which lies above their pure-element melting temperatures, and which includes likely interior temperatures in the Jovian planets.

Soft X-ray production by photon scattering in pulsating binary neutron star sources

A new mechanism is proposed as a source of soft (less than 1 keV) radiation in binary pulsating X-ray sources, in the form of photon scattering which leaves the electron in an excited Landau level. In a plasma with parameters typical of such sources, the low-energy X-ray emissivity of this mechanism far exceeds that of bremsstrahlung. This copious source of soft photons is quite adequate to provide the seed photons needed to explain the power-law hard X-ray spectrum by inverse Comptonization on the hot electrons at the base of the accretion column.
