Effects of supply conditions on film thickness in lubricated Hertzian contacts

A generalization of the hydrodynamic expression for Hertzian contacts is described and various methods for calculating the thickness of the oil film winter steady-state, isothermal conditions are given. This is important for engineering applications such as gears and bearings because these results are closer to real operating conditions. Theories of lubrication are discussed, and the mathematics involved are presented using approximately 30 equations and 13 figures. For lubricated, linear, elliptical or point Hertzian contacts it is demonstrated how to calculate the thickness of the oil film at the center of the contact for steady-state isothermal conditions.

Specifying capacitors for performance and reliability in switching power supplies

The three most commonly used switching circuits are the full bridge converter, the half bridge converter, and the forward converter. All three circuits use the same pulse width concept for regulation with the major difference being how many transistors are used for power handling. The full bridge uses four transistors, the half bridge uses two, and the forward converter uses one. In practical design, forward converters are used at 300 watts and below, half bridges at 300 to 600 watts, and full bridges above 600 watts. Regulation is achieved by alternately saturating diagonal pairs of transistors in the full bridge, alternately saturating transistors in the half bridge, and simply pulse modulating one transistor in the forward converter.

Mercury - Magnetospheric processes and the atmospheric supply and loss rates

It is pointed out that the solar wind is an important contributor to the H and He components of the atmosphere of Mercury. For this reason, and because significant differences exist between the magnetospheres of Mercury and the earth, an investigation was conducted of the magnetospheric processes at Mercury to determine how these processes affect the precipitation of solar wind plasma onto the planetary surface. Attention is given to a review of estimates of the Hermaean magnetic moment, the direct impact of the solar wind on the planetary surface, precipitation along closed dayside magnetic field lines, precipitation along open dayside magnetic field lines, particles precipitating on closed field lines from the plasma sheet, radiogenic and other atmospheric sources, atmospheric loss rates, surface interaction mechanisms, and subsurface residence times and chemical reactions.

The supply of lunar oxygen to low earth orbit

Since oxygen makes up 86% of the total mass of propellants which would normally have been brought up from the earth to LEO, considerable savings are available if this oxygen can be obtained from the moon for little Delta-V penalty. This paper presents a scenario in which 400 T/yr of LOX is delivered to LEO, with the ability for upgrading to 5000 T/yr. In this scenario, cylindrical tanks of liquid oxygen with a mass of 500 kg are launched from the lunar surface by a mass driver and rendezvous with a collection station in a 100-km lunar orbit. The oxygen is removed from each tank and placed into a tanker OTV which later will transfer from low lunar orbit to LEO with an aerobraking maneuver. Launch requirements for aerobraked chemical OTVs using earth oxygen are compared to those using lunar oxygen.

Battery-Operated High-Voltage Power Supply

Circuitry allows large multiplication of voltage. Filament voltage is -80kV. Potential difference between terminals P3 and P4 adjusted to make grid 80 to 150 volts more negative than filament enabling grid to focus electrons from filament into stream impinging on anode, which then emits x-rays. Circuitry provides independently adjustable voltages in kilovolt range for x-ray tubes and other instruments.

Long life communication satellites: Electric power supply during the eclipse period

The electric batteries, essentially nickel-cadmium for French satellites such as D1 A, D1 C, D1 D, D2 B, D5 A, D5 B, etc. and the batteries for such satellites as Symphonie, ANS, INTASAT, ESRO 4, and COS-B are discussed. The experience obtained led to the development of long lifetime batteries for communication satellites. Real simulation tests showed a lifetime of four years and accelerated lifetime tests of twelve years. These batteries will be applied in OTS, METEOSAT, and Marots. At the same time, new batteries are being developed, based on nickel-hydrogen or on silver-hydrogen, which should provide longer lifetime and better reliability.

Remotely-Adjustable Solid-State High-Voltage Supply

Pulsed or steady outputs up to 20 kV produced by commercial components. Circuit produces adjustable high-voltage output in response to low-voltage input. Output voltage changes approximately linearly up to 20 kilovolts as input voltage varied from 0 to 5 volts. Output steady, or sine wave varied at rates up to 100 pulses per second. Output current about 100 microamperes. Reduction in output-filter capacitance confers additional benefit by reducing pulse rise time.

Alternative Food Preservation Techniques, New Technology in Food Preparation and Appropriateness of Food Supply for the Permanently Manned Space Station

Alternative food preservation techniques are defined as unique processes and combinations of currently used processes for food preservation. Food preservation is the extension of the useful shelf-life of normally perishable foods (from harvest to final consumption) by controlling micro-organisms, enzymes, chemical changes, changes in sensory characteristics and the prevention of subsequent recontamination. The resulting products must comply with all applicable food manufacturing practice regulations and be safe. Most of the foods currently used in both space and military feeding are stabilized either by dehydration or the use of a terminal sterilization process. Other available options would be formulation to reduce water activity, the refrigeration and freezing of perishable foods, chemical addition, and physical treatment (ionizing or nonionizing radiation or mechanical action). These alternatives are considered and proposals made.

A siphon mechanism for supplying prominence mass

A siphonlike mechanism for moving mass from the chromosphere to a gravitational well at the top of a magnetic loop to form a prominence is examined. The calculations assume no a priori flow velocity at the loop base. Instead, heating in the loop legs drives the flow. The prominence formation process requires two steps. First, the background heating rate must be reduced to on the order of 1 percent of the initial heating rate required to maintain the coronal loop. This forms an initial condensation at the top of the loop. Second, the heating must take place only in the loop legs in order to produce a pressure differential which drives mass up into the well at the top of the loop. The heating rate in the loop must be increased once the prominence has begun to form, or full prominence densities cannot be achieved in a reasonable time. It is concluded that this heating driven siphonlike mechanism is feasible for producing and maintaining prominences.
