CIEPAT for Photovoltaic System Resilience

The Cyber-Informed Engineering Photovoltaic Analysis Tool (CIEPAT) was developed in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER). This tool is an energy source subcomponent integrated into the CIEMAT ecosystem and is developed to enhance the security and resilience of Photovoltaic installations by incorporating Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE) principles into the deployment of PV systems.

Strategic Pathways for Indigenous Resilient and Innovative Transportation

This presentation details the results of the project, titled Strategic Pathways for Indigenous Resilient and Innovative Transportation. The project culminated in a guidebook for Tribes interested in pursuing public EV charging infrastructure. The guidebook is designed to serve Tribal planners, Tribal departments of transportation, environmental offices, Tribal enterprises, Tribal utility authorities, Tribal leadership, and any other interested parties. The conference presentation will provide details on the engagement conducted during the project to inform the project publications. The presentation will also discuss Tribal sovereignty-related considerations for EV charging infrastructure topics including O&M and working with the electric utility.

Analysis and design of a cantilever-mounted resilient-pad gas-lubricated thrust bearing

A thrust bearing consisting of pads mounted on resilient, metallic, cantilever beams is described and analyzed. Compliance and stiffness of the bearing assembly are discussed, and the effects of bearing design parameters on performance are shown. After the general analysis, a design example is presented for a flat sector-shaped gas bearing. A special case where zero axial movement of the runner can be obtained is pointed out.

Resilient thermal barrier for high temperatures

Abrasion-resistant thermal barrier, consisting of two layers of woven fabric or braided sleeving with bulk insulation sandwiched between, shows excellent resilience even after compression at temperatures above 980C.

Experimental evaluation of foil-supported resilient-pad gas-lubricated thrust bearing

A new type of resilient-pad gas thrust bearing was tested to determine the feasibility of the design. The bearing consists of carbon graphite pads mounted asymmetrically on foil beams. Two bearing configurations were tested at thrust loads from 27 to 80 newtons at speeds to 9000 rpm. The outside diameter of the bearing was 8.9 centimeters.

Operating characteristics of a cantilever-mounted resilient-pad gas-lubricated thrust bearing

A resilient-pad gas thrust bearing consisting of pads mounted on cantilever beams was tested to determine its operating characteristic. The bearing was run at a thrust load of 74 newtons to a speed of 17000 rpm. The pad film thickness and bearing friction torque were measured and compared with theory. The measured film thickness was less than that predicted by theory. The bearing friction torque was greater than that predicted by theory.

Summary of past experience in natural laminar flow and experimental program for resilient leading edge

The potential of natural laminar flow for significant drag reduction and improved efficiency for aircraft is assessed. Past experience with natural laminar flow as reported in published and unpublished data and personal observations of various researchers is summarized. Aspects discussed include surface contour, waviness, and smoothness requirements; noise and vibration effects on boundary layer transition, boundary layer stability criteria; flight experience with natural laminar flow and suction stabilized boundary layers; and propeller slipstream, rain, frost, ice and insect contamination effects on boundary layer transition. The resilient leading edge appears to be a very promising method to prevent leading edge insect contamination.

Abrasive drill for resilient materials

Resilient materials normally present problem in obtaining accurate and uniform hole size and position. Tool is fabricated from stiff metal rod such as tungsten or carbon steel that has diameter slightly smaller than required hole. Piercing/centering point is ground on one end of rod. Rod is then plasma-sprayed (flame-sprayed) with suitable hard abrasive coating. High-speed, slow-feed operation of tool is necessary for accurate holes, and this can be done with drill press, hard drill, or similar machines.

Design and performance of compliant thrust bearing with spiral-groove membranes on resilient supports

Novel thrust bearings with spiral-groove flexible membranes mounted on resilient supports were designed and their performance demonstrated. Advantages of surface compliance were combined with the superior load-capacity of the spiral-groove geometry. Loads of 127-150N were supported on an area 42 sq cm, at speeds of 43,000-45,000 rpm and mean clearances of 15-20 microns. Support-worthiness was proved when tested in conjunction with foil journal-bearings and a 19N rotor, excited in a pitching mode by a total unbalance of 43 micron-N.

Resilient seal ring assembly with spring means applying force to wedge member

A ring seal adapted for installation in an annular recess between a housing and a rotating or reciprocating shaft is described. The seal consists of a resilient ring cup member having a ring wedge member inserted in the center recess of the cup member to wedge the opposing lips of the cup member outwardly into a sealing relationship. A spring maintains the force against the wedge member.

Evaluation of the resiliency characteristics of several candidate Solid Rocket Booster O-ring materials

Resiliency tests have been conducted in order to evaluate O-ring sealing response in the revised Space Shuttle SRBs, giving attention to the effects of temperature and gap-opening rates. Additional testing was conducted to ascertain O-ring responses to simulated SRB field-joint deflections. All tests employed a face-seal fixture mounted on a servohydraulic apparatus. The Viton candidate O-ring material tracked the gap-opening rate better at higher temperatures and lower gap-opening rates; it was also the only material inert to the calcium grease employed. Heaters must be used to maintain the 70 F minimum temperature at which the Viton O-ring will track the required gap opening rate.

A Byzantine resilient processor with an encoded fault-tolerant shared memory

The memory requirements for ultra-reliable computers are expected to increase due to future increases in mission functionality and operating-system requirements. This increase will have a negative effect on the reliability and cost of the system. Increased memory size will also reduce the ability to reintegrate a channel after a transient fault, since the time required to reintegrate a channel in a conventional fault-tolerant processor is dominated by memory realignment time. A Byzantine Resilient Fault-Tolerant Processor with Fault-Tolerant Shared Memory (FTP/FTSM) is presented as a solution to these problems. The FTSM uses an encoded memory system, which reduces the memory requirement by one-half compared to a conventional quad-FTP design. This increases the reliability and decreases the cost of the system. The realignment problem is also addressed by the FTSM. Because any single error is corrected upon a read from the FTSM, a faulty channel's corrupted memory does not need realignment before reintegration of the faulty channel. A combination of correct-on-access and background scrubbing is proposed to prevent the accumulation of transient errors in the memory. With a hardware-implemented scrubber, the scrubbing cycle time, and therefore the memory fault latency, can be upper-bounded at a small value. This technique increases the reliability of the memory system and facilitates validation of its reliability model.

Physically separating printed circuit boards with a resilient, conductive contact

A multi-board module provides high density electronic packaging in which multiple printed circuit boards are stacked. Electrical power, or signals, are conducted between the boards through a resilient contact. One end of the contact is located at a via in the lower circuit board and soldered to a pad near the via. The top surface of the contact rests against a via of the facing printed circuit board.
