High pressure oxygen utilization by NASA

Although NASA is not one of the country's major oxygen consumers, it uses oxygen under severe conditions including very high flow rates and pressure. Materials for such applications must be carefully selected for compatibility, because susceptibility to ignition increases as operating pressure is raised. Much work is needed, however to define the selection criteria. Some of the work in this area that is being performed under sponsorship of NASA's Aerospace Safety Research and Data Institute (ASRDI) is described.

Research on ignition and combustion in oxygen systems

The work on ignition and combustion research in oxygen systems under the sponsorship of NASA's Aerospace Safety Research and Data Institute is described. Preliminary results of ignition of nonmetallic materials by electric arc and mechanical impact are presented. Ignition by a resonant process involving repeated shock waves has been demonstrated and some of the results included. In addition, results of studies concerned with ignition due to the rapid rupture of metal films and diaphragms are reviewed. Burning rate studies of three nonmetallic materials in oxygen enriched environments were completed and the results presented. A brief description of these combustion studies under zero gravity is also included. These results are compared to combustion under one gravity.

ERTS-A data as a teaching and research tool in the Department of Geology

The author has identified the following significant results. The ERTS-1 materials continue to be used in a number of courses including Geology of Alaska, Economic Geology, and Structural Geology. In addition, specific talks about the ERTS-1 material were given at a seminar at the Geophysical Institute, to the Geology Department, to numerous individuals, and were extensively used in a popularized talk on the Geology of Alaska to the local Historical Society.

Thesaurus of terms for information on mechanics of structural failure

A Thesaurus of approximately 700 subject terms used to describe the six problem areas in the mechanics of structural failure is presented. The initial criteria for the selection of terms are their significance and frequency of use in the literature describing the mechanics of structural failure. The purpose of the Thesaurus is to provide the Aerospace Safety Research and Data Institute a list of key works and identifiers that afford effective retrieval of information regarding failure modes and mechanisms for aerospace structures. The Thesaurus includes both a conventional listing of subject terms and a Key Words In Context (KWIC) listing.

ERTS-1 data as a teaching and research tool in the Department of Geology

The author has identified the following significant results. During the sixth bi-monthly period, a mosaic was constructed in MSS band 6 of the southeastern one-half of Alaska. A mosaic of the whole state awaits additional coverage to fill in some gaps. In addition, new material is being monitored as it arrived at the Geophysical Institute and from the NASA Indices for inclusion into the departmental collections. No geology courses are being taught during the summer.

Research needs in ocean color data analysis

The success of the effort to extract several subsurface oceanographic parameters from remotely sensed ocean color data will depend to a great extent upon the existence of adequate theoretical models relating the desired oceanographic parameters to the upwelling radiances to be observed. In order to guide the development of these models, and to check their accuracies, a considerable amount of experimental work must be performed. The theoretical and experimental work needed to develop techniques for the quantitative analysis of satellite ocean color data is described.

Unsteady aerodynamic loads on slender cones at free-stream Mach numbers from 0 to 22.

Results of an experimental study to determine the flow-induced unsteady aerodynamic loads on slender cones at very high Mach numbers. Experiments on 8-deg half-angle-cone/flat-base configurations were conducted at free-stream Mach numbers of 6 and 15 and Reynolds numbers corresponding to shuttle reentry conditions. The flow facilities used were the H-3 Hypersonic Facility (Mach 6) and the Longshot Free Piston Tunnel (Mach 15) of the Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics in Rhode-St.-Genese, Belgium. With these test results and pertinent results from other research efforts, data were available at free-stream Mach numbers of 0.67, 2.5, 3, 4, 6, 15, and 22, so that empirical expressions could be developed for the Mach number dependence (1) of the overall fluctuating pressure under an attached turbulence boundary layer and (2) of the overall fluctuating base pressure.

Development of a high Reynolds number quiet tunnel for transition research

High noise levels in conventional supersonic and hypersonic wind tunnels prevent further advances in transition research. Recent data confirm previous results that transition is dominated by tunnel noise when the rms pressure intensities exceed about 1%. High facility noise levels also dominate fluctuating pressure loads under fully turbulent boundary layers. Recent data on the power spectra of surface pressures indicate that the basic structure of turbulent boundary layers may be modified by high facility noise levels. Experimental data for current techniques to control and reduce noise levels in supersonic and hypersonic wind tunnels by laminarization of nozzle wall boundary layers and by noise radiation shields are presented. These results and possible effects of Taylor-Gortler vortices observed in a nozzle wall boundary layer are used to predict the limits of quiet performance for a proposed 20-in. quiet tunnel.

A study of turbulent flow between parallel plates by a statistical method

Turbulent Couette flow between parallel plates was studied from a statistical mechanics approach utilizing a model equation, similar to the Boltzmann equation of kinetic theory, which was proposed by Lundgren from the velocity distribution of fluid elements. Solutions to this equation are obtained numerically, employing the discrete ordinate method and finite differences. Two types of boundary conditions on the distribution function are considered, and the results of the calculations are compared to available experimental data. The research establishes that Lundgren's equation provides a very good description of turbulence for the flow situation considered and that it offers an analytical tool for further study of more complex turbulent flows. The present work also indicates that modelling of the boundary conditions is an area where further study is required.
