Research on pressure sensors for biomedical instruments

The development of a piezo-resistive pressure transducer is discussed suitable for recording pressures typically encountered in biomedical applications. The pressure transducer consists of a thin silicon diaphragm containing four strain-sensitive resistors, and is fabricated using silicon monolithic integrated-circuit technology. The pressure transducers can be as small as 0.7 mm outer diameter, and are, as a result, suitable for mounting at the tip of a catheter. Pressure-induced stress in the diaphragm is sensed by the resistors, which are interconnected to form a Wheatstone bridge.

Failure analysis of electronic parts: Laboratory methods

Failure analysis test methods are presented for use in analyzing candidate electronic parts and in improving future design reliability. Each test is classified as nondestructive, semidestructive, or destructive. The effects upon applicable part types (i.e. integrated circuit, transitor) are discussed. Methodology is given for performing the following: immersion tests, radio graphic tests, dewpoint tests, gas ambient analysis, cross sectioning, and ultraviolet examination.

Quasi-perfect FIFO: Synchronous or asynchronous with application in controller design for the UNICON laser memory

The first-in-first-out memory buffer (FIFO), is an elastic digital memory whose main application is in data buffering between devices operating at different rates. Data written into the top is moved autonomously down toward the bottom of the FIFO to the lowest unoccupied location, and data read from the bottom of the FIFO will cause data from the top to move autonomously down toward the bottom. The FIFO is available in MOS LSI asynchronous form with data rate in the 1 MHz region. The FIFO described yields a simple high-speed iterative implementation, either synchronous of asynchronous. Because of this simple iterative structure, the FIFO is expandable in both number of words and bits per word, and it is attractive from the viewpoint of integrated-circuit production. For the synchronous FIFO, a model was built and successfully used in the controller for the UNICON laser memory. For the asynchronous FIFO, a model was built and also successfully used in a high-performance magnetic tape controller.

Float zone processing in a weightless environment

Results are given for investigations into: (1) the physical limits which set the maximum practical diameters of Si crystals that can be processed by the float-zone method in a near weightless environment, and (2) the economic impact of large, space-produced Si crystals on the electronics industry. The stability of the melt is evaluated. Heat transfer and fluid flow within the melt as dependent on the crystal size and the degree and type of rotation imparted to the melt are studied. Methods of utilizing the weightless environment for the production of large, stress-free Si crystals of uniform composition are proposed. The economic effect of large size Si crystals, their potential applications, likely utilization and cost advantages in LSI, integrated circuits, and power devices are also evaluated. Foreseeable advantages of larger diameter wafers of good characteristics and the possibilities seen for greater perfection resulting from stress-free growth are discussed.

Battery peak charge voltage monitor for dual air density satellite

A battery peak charge voltage monitor was developed for use on the dual air density satellite (DADS). This device retains a reading of the maximum voltage reached by the spacecraft battery during periods of charging, and makes it available during periods of data transmission. The monitor is connected across the battery and operates solely from the battery; it is powered continuously with quiescent input current of only 3 milliamperes. Standard integrated circuits and a thin-film resistor network are utilized. The monitor occupies approximately 40 square centimeters of a printed-circuit board within a larger electronic package.

SEM evaluation of metallization on semiconductors

A test method for the evaluation of metallization on semiconductors is presented and discussed. The method has been prepared in MIL-STD format for submittal as a proposed addition to MIL-STD-883. It is applicable to discrete devices and to integrated circuits and specifically addresses batch-process oriented defects. Quantitative accept/reject criteria are given for contact windows, other oxide steps, and general interconnecting metallization. Figures are provided that illustrate typical types of defects. Apparatus specifications, sampling plans, and specimen preparation and examination requirements are described. Procedures for glassivated devices and for multi-metal interconnection systems are included.

A multichannel biotelemetry transmitter utilizing a PCM subcarrier

Making use of the currently available integrated circuits, a miniature PCM telemetry system operating from one miniature 9-volt battery and drawing less than 5 milliamps has been constructed. The use of this PCM telemetry signal not only provides accurate data transmission, but requires a minimum of RF bandwidth. The serial format that results from multiplexing the input data allows the use of a single channel recorder with its cost savings over a multichannel tape recorder. An additional benefit of the PCM encoding is that the data is in digital format and is directly suitable for computer use.

A multichannel implantable telemetry system for flow, pressure, and ECG measurements

The design, principles of operation, and performance of an implantable miniaturized (48 cu cm in volume) multiplex telemetry system for simultaneous measurement of up to eight physiological parameters (including cardiovascular data) are described. Integrated circuits are used to reduce the size, complexity, and cost of fabrication. Power consumption is reduced using recently developed complementary MOS devices. PWM technique is selected as it is relatively easy to implement, lends itself to ICs, and provides an accurate means of transmitting data. The system is totally implantable within the chest of a test animal, with no wire penetrating through the skin. It is shown that the described system permits repeated measurement of the physiological effects of a variety of interventions in awake unanesthetized animals.

Engineering studies of vectorcardiographs in blood pressure measuring systems, appendix 1

A small, portable, relatively inexpensive computer system was developed for on-line use in clinical or laboratory situations. The system features an integrated hardware-software package that permits use of all peripherals, such as analog-to-digital converter, oscilloscope, plotter, digital bus, with an interpreter constructed around the BASIC programming language. The system is conceptually similar to the LINC system developed in 1962, but is more compact and powerful due to intervening advances in integrated circuit technology. A description of the hardware of the system was given. A reference manual, user manual, and programming guides were also presented. Finally, a stereo display system for vectorcardiograms was described.
