A hazard analysis has been requested from Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) regarding the identification of normal and credible abnormal conditions relative to machining activities performed at NMCA location UMPETY in Room SQUAT of SHANGRALA.
Bayesian Monte Carlo is a tool to address imperfect data & models, non-linear models, non-normal PDFs, and integration of differential and integral data. Simple propagation to criticality shows effects of new $\mathcal{L}$($β|z,γ$).
This presentation discusses several recent issues have been raised over the past few years regarding inconsistent definitions for the number of scattering atoms between incoherent elastic and inelastic (MT2 and MT4 files, respectively) in the same MF7 file and isotopic distribution of primary scattering atom. It also discusses how processing codes handle these potential issues in different ways. Additionally, it discusses how the preferred solution would be automation in order to reduce possibility of user error and a proposed solution in the form of a MF7/MT1 file is examined with preliminary examples. The presentation concludes with a question-and-answer discussion.

Star-CCM+, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software was used to conduct modeling and simulation of the thermal performance of a dry storage configuration consisting of Department of Energy Standardized Canisters (DOESCs) loaded with aluminum-clad spent nuclear fuel (ASNF.) The configuration includes nine DOESCs loaded with Advanced Test Reactor ASNF contained within a stainless steel overcanister centered in a ventilated, concrete overpack. The simulations were used to estimate the maximum temperatures reached by backfill gases inside the overcanister and DOESCs.
The challenge of reconstructing spatial fields that change over time from limited sensor data has been a focal point for many research studies. Various machine learning methods have been used in attempts to address this complex issue, including convolutional neural networks. All of the proposed methods share a common requirement that the user needs to manually determine the sensor positions. This requirement remains a limiting factor in the ongoing quest for efficient learning and accurate field reconstruction. This study aims to present a method that enables a model to optimize sensor positions via backpropagation, thereby facilitating the model’s exploration of the spatial domain and enhancing sensor positioning effectively. Indexing naturally incorporates discrete decisions. This operation is nondifferentiable which is a requirement for the application of gradient-based optimization methods. We showcased its effectiveness by training an attention-based neural network, which achieved top-tier performance on two separate datasets. To our knowledge, this represents the first fully end-to-end differentiable workflow for enhancing sensor placement within a neural network model.
Work was performed to investigate the thermal behavior of a sealed aluminum-clad spent nuclear fuel (ASNF) dry storage configuration under hypothetical accident conditions during long-term storage. The considered system consists of a concrete dry storage overpack; a welded over canister, backfilled with argon; and nine Department of Energy (DOE) standardized canisters (DOESCs) loaded with ASNF, backfilled with helium gas. One technical concern associated with the long-term storage of ASNF includes radiolytic hydrogen generation. The yield of large quantities of hydrogen could lead to DOESC over pressurization or a flammable internal atmosphere. While flammability concerns can be resolved by preventing the ingress of oxygen, the canister pressure is partially controlled by the atmosphere temperature. This memorandum summarizes the results of modeling and simulation (M&S) work completed with Star CCM+ (a computational fluid dynamics [CFD] software) considering the thermal effects of a fully engulfing flame and another scenario with the vent ports of the concrete dry storage overpack completely blocked. The goal was to determine the bounding maximum temperature of the DOESC internal atmosphere to evaluate a worst-case pressure scenario, as well as the critical vent port blockage durations.
