The Investigation of 6mu Biaxially Oriented Polyethylene 2, 6, -Naphthalate As a Possible Dielectric For Pulse Power Capacitors

The introduction of polythylene -2, 6-Naphthalate (PEN) semicrystalline film with thicknesses of 0.9mu, 1.5mu, 4.0Mu and community. Its unique chemical and high temparterure stability, as well as superior thermo-mechanical properties allow ultra thin ( 2mu) PEN film to be processed into miniature multilayer chip capacitors for surface mount technology (SMT) application that can be used with standard soldering techniques.

The Impact of Dielectric Constant Model and Surface Reference on Differences Between SMOS and Aquarius Sea Surface Salinity

Two ongoing space missions share the scientific objective of mapping the global Sea Surface Salinity (SSS), yet their observations show significant discrepancies. ESA's Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and NASA's Aquarius use L-band (1.4 GHz) radiometers to measure emission from the sea surface and retrieve SSS. Significant differences in SSS retrieved by both sensors are observed, with SMOS SSS being generally lower than Aquarius SSS, except for very cold waters where SMOS SSS is the highest overall. Figure 1 is an example of the difference between the SSS retrieved by SMOS and Aquarius averaged over one month and 1 degree in longitude and latitude. Differences are mostly between -1 psu and +1 psu (psu, practical salinity unit), with a significant regional and latitudinal dependence. We investigate the impact of the vicarious calibration and retrieval algorithm used by both mission on these differences.

All-Dielectric Meta-Optics for High-Efficiency Independent Amplitude and Phase Manipulation

Optical metasurfaces, composed of subwavelength scattering elements, demonstrate remarkable control over the transmitted amplitude, phase, and polarization of light. However, manipulating the amplitude upon transmission, without the use of surface waves, requires loss if a single metasurface is used. Herein, high-efficiency independent manipulation of the amplitude and phase of a beam is described using two lossless phase-only metasurfaces separated by a distance. With this configuration, optical components such as combined beam-forming and splitting devices are experimentally demonstrated, as well as those for forming complex-valued, 3D holograms. The compound meta-optic platform provides a promising approach for achieving high-performance holographic displays and compact optical components, while exhibiting a high overall efficiency.

Optically Induced Picosecond Lattice Compression in the Dielectric Component of a Strongly Coupled Ferroelectric/Dielectric Superlattice

Above-bandgap femtosecond optical excitation of a ferroelectric/dielectric BaTiO 3 /CaTiO 3 superlattice leads to structural responses that are a consequence of the screening of the strong electrostatic coupling between the component layers. Time-resolved X-ray free-electron laser diffraction shows that the structural response to optical excitation includes a net lattice expansion of the superlattice consistent with depolarization-field screening driven by the photoexcited charge carriers. The depolarization-field-screening-driven expansion is separate from a photoacoustic pulse launched from the bottom electrode on which the superlattice is epitaxially grown. The distribution of diffracted intensity of superlattice X-ray reflections indicates that the depolarization-field-screening-induced strain includes a photoinduced expansion in the ferroelectric BaTiO 3 and a contraction in CaTiO 3 . The magnitude of expansion in BaTiO 3 layers is larger than the contraction in CaTiO 3 . The difference in the magnitude of depolarization-field-screening-driven strain in the BaTiO 3 and CaTiO 3 components can arise from the contribution of the oxygen octahedral rotation patterns at the BaTiO 3 /CaTiO 3 interfaces to the polarization of CaTiO 3 . The depolarization-field-screening-driven polarization reduction in the CaTiO 3 layers points to a new direction for the manipulation of polarization in the component layers of a strongly coupled ferroelectric/dielectric superlattice.

Depyrogenation using plasmas: A novel approach for endotoxin deactivation using a dielectric barrier discharge at atmospheric pressure

Developing a low-cost depyrogenation process is vital in extending the medical applicability of polymers that can be used in medicine. We present an overview of the plasma-based depyrogenation literature and address the need to develop a nonthermal plasma-based depyrogenation process for delicate materials such as chitosan. We present a low-cost plasma apparatus to treat chitosan powder in hermetically sealed bags. We decouple the experiments into two parts: depyrogenation experiments for dried standard endotoxin on glass slides and analysis of chitosan modifications through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. We demonstrate depyrogenation efficacy with up to a 4-log reduction in endotoxin levels and discuss minor changes observed in plasma-treated chitosan.
