COPTRAN - A method of optimum communication systems design

Single set of mathematical expressions describes system cost and probability of error of data transmission in terms of four basic parameters in the link equation. A Lagrange multiplier sets up equations whose solutions yield the optimum values for system design considerations and weight and cost values.

Summary of spin technology as related to light general-aviation airplanes

A summary was made of all NASA (and NACA) research and experience related to the spin and recovery characteristics of light personal-owner-type general-aviation airplanes. Very little of the research deals with light general-aviation airplanes as such, but many of the airplanes and models tested before and during World War II were similar to present-day light general-aviation airplanes with regard to the factors that are important in spinning. The material is based mainly on the results of spin-tunnel tests of free-spinning dynamically scaled models of about 100 different airplane designs and, whenever possible, includes correlation with full-scale spin tests. The research results are discussed in terms of airplane design considerations and the proper use of controls for recovery.

Low nutation-rate dampers

Mission requirements plus spacecraft weight and power constraints often reduce the excitation frequency of a nutation damper below 1 cpm. Since attitude stability is determined by damper performance, maximum effectiveness at low rates is demanded. Presented are design considerations that low-frequency dampers require, along with descriptions of two low-frequency systems: the Direct Measurement Explorer 1 and the Small Astronomy Satellite A (SAS-A).

The requirements for a new full scale subsonic wind tunnel

Justification and requirements are presented for a large subsonic wind tunnel capable of testing full scale aircraft, rotor systems, and advanced V/STOL propulsion systems. The design considerations and constraints for such a facility are reviewed, and the trades between facility test capability and costs are discussed.

Shutter mechanism for spacecraft spectrophotometer

A shutter mechanism is described for the backscatter ultraviolet spectrophotometer experiment on the Nimbus D satellite. The purpose of the experiment is to determine spatial distribution of atmospheric ozone from measurements of ultraviolet radiation backscattered by the earth's atmosphere. The system consists of two independent, rotary cylinder shutters, controlled by a dual star Geneva mechanism, and driven by a single stepper motor. A single driver controls a combination of two independently driven Geneva stars. Design considerations involved the use of low friction, nonmetallic materials.

Atmosphere revitalization in the space station prototype.

The atmosphere revitalization group (ARG) for the space station prototype (SSP) environmental/thermal control and life support system (ETC/LSS) has been designed to meet a comprehensive set of requirements and constraints for a flight type mission. Design definition is for a modular vehicle temperature and humidity control subsystem, contaminant control equipment, a hydrogen depolarized cell CO2 concentrator, a water electrolysis oxygen generation subsystem, CO2 reduction equipment, and a pressure and composition control subsystem. Performance requirements are for support of a crew of six. Realistic leakage rates and metabolic activity cycles, cabin temperature selectability, and controlled cabin relative humidities are specified for the design. Operational aspects of the subsystem are discussed with emphasis given to the influence of a 180-day, maintainable requirement on system design. Consideration of flight vehicle type packaging, in flight maintenance, data management systems interface and fault detection capability, and electrical supply constraints is covered.

Scanning mirror for infrared sensors

A high resolution, long life angle-encoded scanning mirror, built for application in an infrared attitude sensor, is described. The mirror uses a Moire' fringe type optical encoder and unique torsion bar suspension together with a magnetic drive to meet stringent operational and environmental requirements at a minimum weight and with minimum power consumption. Details of the specifications, design, and construction are presented with an analysis of the mirror suspension that allows accurate prediction of performance. The emphasis is on mechanical design considerations, and brief discussions are included on the encoder and magnetic drive to provide a complete view of the mirror system and its capabilities.
