A coupled DEM-IMB-LBM model for simulating methane hydrate exploitation involving particle dissolution

The coupled discrete element and lattice Boltzmann method using an immersed moving boundary scheme was extended to simulate methane hydrate exploitation involving mass transport and particle dissolution. In this coupled DEM-IMB-LBM model, a new Dirichlet-type thermal boundary condition is extended to simulate moving curved boundaries with constant concentration. A novel periodic boundary including an efficient searching algorithm for particle contact is proposed to reduce the computational cost and boundary effect. So, this model is validated by two numerical examples: a circular particle with concentration convection-diffusion moving in a horizontal channel and mass transport from a cylinder particle in a simple shear flow. The numerical results obtained from the proposed model agree well with previous studies. To further demonstrate the capacity of the proposed model, simulations of methane hydrate exploitation including two formations in marine sediments are carried out. The numerical results indicate that the coupled DEM-IMB-LBM is not only capable of simulating the dissolution of hydrate particles at the grain level, but also recover the sand erosion and migration process in a fundamental perspective during the methane hydrate exploitation process.

A Thermo‐Flow‐Mechanics‐Fracture Model Coupling a Phase‐Field Interface Approach and Thermo‐Fluid‐Structure Interaction

This work proposes a novel approach for coupling non-isothermal fluid dynamics with fracture mechanics to capture thermal effects within fluid-filled fractures accurately. This method addresses critical aspects of calculating fracture width in enhanced geothermal systems, where the temperature effects of fractures are crucial. The proposed algorithm features an iterative coupling between an interface-capturing phase-field fracture method and interface-tracking thermo-fluid-structure interaction using arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian coordinates. We use a phase-field approach to represent fractures and reconstruct the geometry to frame a thermo-fluid-structure interaction problem, resulting in pressure and temperature fields that drive fracture propagation. We developed a novel phase-field interface model accounting for thermal effects, enabling the coupling of quantities specific to the fluid-filled fracture with the phase-field model through the interface between the fracture and the intact solid domain. We provide several numerical examples to demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed algorithm. In particular, we analyze mesh convergence of our phase-field interface model, investigate the effects of temperature on crack width and volume in a static regime, and highlight the method's potential for modeling slowly propagating fractures.

Orbital Hybridization and Magnetic Coupling at Cuprate–Manganite Interfaces Driven by Manganite Doping

Fundamental understanding of interface mechanisms that generate unexpected physical properties in the cuprate/manganite heterostructures is essential for possible applications as spintronic devices. In this study, CaCuO 2 /La 1–x Sr x MnO 3 (CCO/LSMO) superlattices are investigated, where the infinite-layer cuprate CCO does not have apical oxygen for Cu in the Ca-plane so that the Mn–O–Cu superexchange coupling can be only present at the MnO 2 –(La,Sr)O–CuO 2 interface. Two different doping states for the manganites are studied, namely x = 0.1 and x = 0.3, corresponding to the ferromagnetic insulating and ferromagnetic metallic states, respectively, in the manganite phase diagram. Linear and circular dichroism in X-ray absorption by synchrotron radiation at Cu and Mn L-edges clearly demonstrate that in the absence of apical oxygen in the cuprate block, the magnetic coupling between the LSMO and CCO is weakly ferromagnetic when LSMO is metallic, while it is antiferromagnetic when LSMO is insulating, along with an increased Cu 3d(3z 2 –r 2 ) and Mn 3d(3z 2 –r 2 ) orbital occupation. It is proposed that the Mn 3d valence band upward shift driven by the enhancement of Mn 3+ content in the underdoped sample enhances the orbital hybridization. The stronger hybridization at the interface MnO 2 –(La,Sr)O–CuO 2 gives rise to the antiferromagnetic coupling between cuprate and underdoped manganite.

One‐Pot Synthesis of Xanthone by Carbonylative Suzuki Coupling Reaction

Abstract Xanthone derivatives have a dibenzo‐y‐pyrone scaffold which has gained great interest in Medicinal Chemistry due to their diverse biological activities. Usually, its synthesis requires multi‐step synthetic routes using harsh conditions and high catalyst loadings. In this communication, we report for the first time a one‐pot synthesis of the xanthone scaffold based on a carbonylative Suzuki coupling. Iodophenol and (2‐methoxyphenyl)boronic acid were coupled under carbon monoxide, generated from a carbon monoxide surrogate. An experimental data‐based model was built to guide the reaction optimization. The optimized conditions were 1 mol% of a pincer complex as palladium catalyst, 5 equivalents of K 2 CO 3 as base, and DMF:water (7 : 3) as solvent. The robustness of the synthetic method, namely in terms of the reactants scope, was also evaluated. This approach provided the xanthone scaffold in high yields and provided a deep insight into the carbonylative Suzuki couplings.

Nonlinear Nano‐Imaging of Interlayer Coupling in 2D Graphene‐Semiconductor Heterostructures

The emergent electronic, spin, and other quantum properties of 2D heterostructures of graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides are controlled by the underlying interlayer coupling and associated charge and energy transfer dynamics. However, these processes are sensitive to interlayer distance and crystallographic orientation, which are in turn affected by defects, grain boundaries, or other nanoscale heterogeneities. This obfuscates the distinction between interlayer charge and energy transfer. Here, nanoscale imaging in coherent four‐wave mixing (FWM) and incoherent two‐photon photoluminescence (2PPL) is combined with a tip distance‐dependent coupled rate equation model to resolve the underlying intra‐ and inter‐layer dynamics while avoiding the influence of structural heterogeneities in mono‐ to multi‐layer graphene/WSe 2 heterostructures. With selective insertion of hBN spacer layers, it is shown that energy, as opposed to charge transfer, dominates the interlayer‐coupled optical response. From the distinct nano‐FWM and ‐2PPL tip‐sample distance‐dependent modification of interlayer and intralayer relaxation by tip‐induced enhancement and quenching, an interlayer energy transfer time of τ ET ≈ ( 0 . 35 − 0.15 + 0.65 ) $\tau _{\rm ET} \approx (0.35^{+0.65}_{-0.15})$ ps consistent with recent reports is derived. As a local probe technique, this approach highlights the ability to determine intrinsic sample properties even in the presence of large sample heterogeneity.

A new coupling of a GPU-resident large-eddy simulation code with a multiphysics wind turbine simulation tool

The development of new wind farm control strategies can benefit from combined analysis of flow dynamics in the farm and the behavior of individual turbines within one simulation environment. In this work, we present such an environment by developing a new coupling between the large-eddy simulation (LES) code GRASP and the multiphysics wind turbine simulation tool OpenFAST via an actuator line model (ALM). In addition, the implementation of the recently proposed filtered actuator line model (FALM) within the coupling is described. The new ALM implementation is cross-verified with results from four other commonly used research LES codes. The results for the blade loads and the near wake obtained with the new coupling are consistent with the other codes. Deviations are observed in the far wake. The results further indicate that the FALM is able to reduce the lift and power overprediction from which the traditional ALM suffers on coarse LES grids. This new simulation environment paves the way for future wind farm simulations under realistic weather conditions by leveraging GRASP's ability to impose data from large-scale meteorological models as boundary conditions.

Rescuing a black hole in the large- q coupled SYK model

In this paper, we develop a general effective theory for two copies of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with a time-dependent bilinear coupling. For a quantum quench problem with an initial state of the thermofield double state, we show how the evolution of the system is described by a complex reparametrization field with a classical Hamiltonian. We study correlation functions in this system and compare the large-q theory with the bulk low energy effective theory. In particular, we study the special case of a “rescued black hole”, which describes how a time-evolved thermofield double state can evolve to the ground state of a coupled SYK model by a carefully tuned time-dependent coupling. In the low energy region, there is a holographic dual interpretation, which is a geometry that crosses over from an eternal black hole to a global AdS2 vacuum. This family of geometries allow us to access the bulk region that would be the black hole interior without the rescue process. By comparing the large-q and low energy theory, we find that even in the low energy region the deviation from the low energy theory cannot be neglected if the rescue process starts late. This provides evidence that the low energy effective theory of the bulk fails near the inner horizon of the black hole. We note the possibility of a connection to a two-dimensional analog of the higher-dimensional black hole singularity.

Axion periodicity and coupling quantization in the presence of mixing

Mixing of axion fields is widely used to generate EFTs with phenomenologically advantageous features, such as hierarchies between axion couplings to different gauge fields and/or large effective field ranges. While these features are strongly constrained by periodicity for models with only a single axion, mixing has been used in the literature (sometimes incorrectly) to try to evade some of these constraints. In this paper, we ask whether it is possible to use axion mixing to generate an EFT of axions that evades these constraints by flowing to a theory of a non-compact scalar in the IR. We conclude that as long as the light axion is exactly massless, it will inherit the periodicity and associated constraints of the UV theory. However, by giving the light axion a mass, we can relax these constraints with effects proportional to the axion mass squared, including non-quantized couplings and the realignment of monodromy to a light axion with a larger field range. To show this, we consider various examples of axions mixing with other axions or with non-compact scalar fields, and work in a basis where coupling quantization is manifest. This basis makes it clear that in the case where an axion is eaten through the Higgs or Stückelberg mechanism, the light axion does not have a large effective field range, in contrast to some recent claims in the literature. Additionally, we relate our results about axion EFTs to a well-known fact about gauge theory: that QFTs with compact gauge groups in the UV flow to QFTs with compact gauge groups in the IR, and make this correspondence precise in the 2+1 dimensional case.

The coupled SYK model at finite temperature

Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, which describes N randomly interacting Majorana fermions in 0+1 dimension, is found to be an solvable UV-complete toy model for holographic duality in nearly AdS 2 dilaton gravity. Ref. [1] proposed a modified model by coupling two identical SYK models, which at low-energy limit is dual to a global AdS 2 geometry. This geometry is an “eternal wormhole" because the two boundaries are causally connected. Increasing the temperature drives a Hawking-Page like transition from the eternal wormhole geometry to two disconnected black holes with coupled matter field. To gain more understanding of the coupled SYK model, in this work, we study the finite temperature spectral function of this system by numerical solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation in real-time. We find in the low-temperature phase the system is well described by weakly interacting fermions with renormalized single-particle gap, while in the high temperature phase the system is strongly interacting and the single-particle peaks merge. We also study the q dependence of the spectral function.

Scalar field couplings to quadratic curvature and decay into gravitons

Any field, even if it lives in a completely hidden sector, interacts with the visible sector at least via the gravitational interaction. In this paper, we show that a scalar field in such a hidden sector generically couples to the quadratic curvature via dimension five operators, i.e., ΦR 2 , ΦR μν R μν , ΦR μνρσ R μνρσ , ΦR μνρσ R~ μνρσ , because they can emerge if there exist particles heavier than it. We derive these scalar couplings to the quadratic curvature by integrating out heavy particles in a systematic manner. Such couplings are of phenomenological interest since some of them induce the scalar decay into the graviton pair. We point out that the decay of a scalar field can produce a substantial amount of the stochastic cosmic graviton background at high frequency since the suppression scale of these operators is given by the mass of heavy particles not by the Planck scale. The resultant graviton spectrum is computed in some concrete models.

Search for a third-generation leptoquark coupled to a τ lepton and a b quark through single, pair, and nonresonant production in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for a third-generation leptoquark (LQ) coupled exclusively to a τ lepton and a b quark. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded with the CMS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. Events with τ leptons and a varying number of jets originating from b quarks are considered, targeting the single and pair production of LQs, as well as nonresonant t-channel LQ exchange. An excess is observed in the data with respect to the background expectation in the combined analysis of all search regions. For a benchmark LQ mass of 2 TeV and an LQ-b-τ coupling strength of 2.5, the excess reaches a local significance of up to 2.8 standard deviations. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are placed on the LQ production cross section in the LQ mass range 0.5–2.3 TeV, and up to 3 TeV for t-channel LQ exchange. Leptoquarks are excluded below masses of 1.22–1.88 TeV for different LQ models and varying coupling strengths up to 2.5. The study of nonresonant ττ production through t-channel LQ exchange allows lower limits on the LQ mass of up to 2.3 TeV to be obtained.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Replica wormhole and information retrieval in the SYK model coupled to Majorana chains

Motivated by recent studies of the information paradox in (1+1)-D anti-de Sitter spacetime with a bath described by a (1+1)-D conformal field theory, we study the dynamics of second Ŕenyi entropy of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model (χ) coupled to a Majorana chain bath (ψ). The system is prepared in the thermofield double (TFD) state and then evolved by HL + HR. For small system-bath coupling, we find that the second Rényi entropy $S^(2)_{χL,χR}$ of the SYK model undergoes a first order transition during the evolution. In the sense of holographic duality, the long-time solution corresponds to a “replica wormhole”. The transition time corresponds to the Page time of a black hole coupled to a thermal bath. We further study the information scrambling and retrieval by introducing a classical control bit, which controls whether or not we add a perturbation in the SYK system. The mutual information between the bath and the control bit shows a positive jump at the Page time, indicating that the entanglement wedge of the bath includes an island in the holographic bulk.

Chromoelectric field correlator for quarkonium transport in the strongly coupled $ \mathcal{N}$ = 4 Yang-Mills plasma from AdS/CFT

Previous studies have shown that a gauge-invariant correlation function of two chromoelectric fields connected by a straight timelike adjoint Wilson line encodes crucial information about quark-gluon plasma (QGP) that determines the dynamics of small-sized quarkonium in the medium. Motivated by the successes of holographic calculations to describe strongly coupled QGP, we calculate the analog gauge-invariant correlation function in strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at finite temperature by using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Our results indicate that the transition processes between bound and unbound quarkonium states are suppressed in strongly coupled plasmas, and moreover, the leading contributions to these transition processes vanish in both the quantum Brownian motion and quantum optical limits of open quantum system approaches to quarkonia

Structure constants in $ \mathcal{N} $ = 4 SYM at finite coupling as worldsheet g-function

We develop a novel nonperturbative approach to a class of three-point functions in planar $ \mathcal{N} $ N = 4 SYM based on Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA). More specifically, we study three-point functions of a non-BPS single-trace operator and two determinant operators dual to maximal Giant Graviton D-branes in AdS 5 × S 5 . They correspond to disk one-point functions on the worldsheet and admit a simpler and more powerful integrability description than the standard single-trace three-point functions. We first introduce two new methods to efficiently compute such correlators at weak coupling; one based on large N collective fields, which provides an example of open-closed-open duality discussed by Gopakumar, and the other based on combinatorics. The results so obtained exhibit a simple determinant structure and indicate that the correlator can be interpreted as a generalization of g -functions in 2d QFT; an overlap between an integrable boundary state and a state corresponding to the single-trace operator. We then determine the boundary state at finite coupling using the symmetry, the crossing equation and the boundary Yang-Baxter equation. With the resulting boundary state, we derive the ground-state g -function based on TBA and conjecture its generalization to other states. This is the first fully nonperturbative proposal for the structure constants of operators of finite length. The results are tested extensively at weak and strong couplings. Finally, we point out that determinant operators can provide better probes of sub-AdS locality than single-trace operators and discuss possible applications.

Matter couplings and equivalence principles for soft scalars

Scalar effective field theories with enhanced soft limits behave in many ways like gauge theories and gravity. In particular, symmetries fix the structure of interactions and the tree-level S-matrix in both types of theories. We explore how this analogy persists in the presence of matter by considering theories with additional fields coupled to the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) scalar or the special galileon in a way that is consistent with their symmetries. Using purely on-shell arguments, we show that these theories obey analogues of the S-matrix equivalence principle whereby all matter fields must couple to the DBI scalar or the special galileon through a particular quartic vertex with a universal coupling. These equivalence principles imply the universality of the leading double soft theorems in these theories, which are scalar analogues of Weinberg’s gravitational soft theorem, and can be used to rule out interactions with massless higher-spin fields when combined with analogues of the generalized Weinberg-Witten theorem. We verify in several examples that amplitudes with external matter fields nontrivially exhibit enhanced single soft limits and we show that such amplitudes can be constructed using soft recursion relations when they have sufficiently many external DBI or special galileon legs, including amplitudes with massive higher-spin fields. As part of our analysis we construct a recently conjectured special galileon-vector effective field theory.

BPS Wilson loop in $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 superconformal SU(N) “orientifold” gauge theory and weak-strong coupling interpolation

We consider the expectation value \( \left\langle \mathcal{W}\right\rangle \) of the circular BPS Wilson loop in \( \mathcal{N} \) = 2 superconformal SU( N ) gauge theory containing a vector multiplet coupled to two hypermultiplets in rank-2 symmetric and antisymmetric representations. This theory admits a regular large N expansion, is planar-equivalent to \( \mathcal{N} \) = 4 SYM theory and is expected to be dual to a certain orbifold/orientifold projection of AdS 5 × S 5 superstring theory. On the string theory side \( \left\langle \mathcal{W}\right\rangle \) is represented by the path integral expanded near the same AdS 2 minimal surface as in the maximally supersymmetric case. Following the string theory argument in [5], we suggest that as in the \( \mathcal{N} \) = 4 SYM case and in the \( \mathcal{N} \) = 2 SU( N ) × SU( N ) superconformal quiver theory discussed in [19], the coefficient of the leading non-planar 1/ N 2 correction in \( \left\langle \mathcal{W}\right\rangle \) should have the universal λ 3/2 scaling at large ’t Hooft coupling. We confirm this prediction by starting with the localization matrix model representation for \( \left\langle \mathcal{W}\right\rangle \) . We complement the analytic derivation of the λ 3/2 scaling by a numerical high-precision resummation and extrapolation of the weak-coupling expansion using conformal mapping improved Padé analysis.

Dynamics of heavy quarks in strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM plasma

We calculate the probability distribution P(k) for a heavy quark with velocity v propagating through strongly coupled N = 4 SYM plasma in the ’t Hooft limit (N c → ∞, λ = g 2 N c → ∞) at a temperature T to acquire a momentum k due to interactions with the plasma. This distribution encodes the well-known drag coefficient η D and the transverse and longitudinal momentum diffusion coefficients κ T and κ L . The jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$ can be extracted from P(k) for v = 1. Going beyond these known Gaussian characteristics of P(k), our calculation determines all of the higher order and mixed moments to leading order in 1/$\sqrt{λ}$ for the first time. These non-Gaussian features of P(k) include qualitatively novel correlations between longitudinal energy loss and transverse momentum broadening at nonzero v. We show that all higher moments scale characteristically with an effective temperature of the boosted plasma in the heavy quark rest frame, and we demonstrate that these non-Gaussian characteristics can be sizable in magnitude and even dominant in physically relevant situations. We use these results to derive a Kolmogorov equation for the evolution of the probability distribution for the total momentum of a heavy quark that propagates through strongly coupled plasma. This evolution equation accounts for all higher order correlations between transverse momentum broadening and longitudinal energy loss, which we have calculated from first principles. It reduces to a Fokker-Planck equation when truncated to only include the effects of η D , κ T and κ L . Remarkably, while heavy quarks do not reach kinetic equilibrium with the plasma if evolved with this Fokker-Planck equation, by showing that the Boltzmann distribution is a static solution of the all-order Kolmogorov equation that we have derived we demonstrate that heavy quarks do reach kinetic equilibrium if evolved with this equation. Our results thus provide a dynamically complete framework for understanding the thermalization of a heavy quark that may be initially far from equilibrium in the strongly coupled N = 4 SYM plasma — as well as new insight into heavy quark transport and equilibration in quark-gluon plasma.

Precision test of the muon-Higgs coupling at a high-energy muon collider

We explore the sensitivity of directly testing the muon-Higgs coupling at a high-energy muon collider. This is strongly motivated if there exists new physics that is not aligned with the Standard Model Yukawa interactions which are responsible for the fermion mass generation. We illustrate a few such examples for physics beyond the Standard Model. With the accidentally small value of the muon Yukawa coupling and its subtle role in the high-energy production of multiple (vector and Higgs) bosons, we show that it is possible to measure the muon-Higgs coupling to an accuracy of ten percent for a 10 TeV muon collider and a few percent for a 30 TeV machine by utilizing the three boson production, potentially sensitive to a new physics scale about Λ ~ 30 - 100 TeV.
